The Demise of an old farmhouse
As some of you know, we live in the country, in an old farmhouse. Our neighbors live about a half mile away from us either way, but we have a working farm across the road. It had a beautiful house that was built about the same time as ours over 100 years ago. No one lives in it though.
Last night, about 10:30 R and I smelled wood smoke. Since we are remodeling, he checked the cellar, upstairs and outside. The smoke was coming from across the road!! He called 911 and they called the owner. He came over and tried to get in the house but it was too hot. Within 15 minutes, we had four fire departments here. We had an ambulance and other trucks literally in the front yard here. I phoned my daughter and she came over. The smoke was terrible but we sat on the porch and watched. the owner daughters came over and we comforted her as well as possible. That house had been in her family for generations.
We had all kinds of vehicles all over the place and it took them three and a half hours to put the fire down...or so they thought. At 5:30 this morning, we woke to a repeat proformance of fire, smoke, sirens and people all over the place. I saw fire shooting out of the old house and I knew that wonderful house was gone.
All that's left is burnt out shell and I could just cry.
I suppose I'll get used to the awful smell in awhile. I guess that they will have to bulldoze it down and there goes countless memories for many generations.
