Corn Syrup Swap for Subway's Sweet Oninon Sauce?

OK, here is the copycat recipe for the addicitve sauce that makes my Veggie Delight Sub so amazing:

Subway Sweet Onion Sauce

1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 tablespoon minced white onion
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
2 teaspoons white distilled vinegar
1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon buttermilk powder
1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon poppy seeds
1/8 teaspoon salt
pinch cracked black pepper
pinch garlic powder

Combine all ingredients in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat mixture uncovered in the microwave for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes on high until mixture boils rapidly. Whisk well, cover and cool.

Makes about 2/3 cup. 45 calories per tablespoon.

BUT- is there anything to replace that icky corn syrup with? I can't find a Splenda-like syrup of the same consistancy. Anyone try using the Flavored Syrups like DeVinci's for something like this, or would the consistancy be too weird?

Agave nectar.

Soulbliss, thanks for your reply! I was looking up Agave nectar, and it seems to be TWICE as calorie dense as the corn syrup (60 cal per tbsp vs. 30 cal)! Can this be right? Is it thicker? Can you cut it with water to make it more reasonable calorie-wise without compromising the consistancy? I've never tried it!

you can get SPLENDA simple syrup from Davinci. you would probably have to order it online.

Yeah, like Nessa said, it's very sweet and thick. You certainly could thin it a bit!

I have never seen corn syrup that had 30 calories per tablespoon. According to www.thedailyplate.com, all listed have 60+ per tablespoon.

SoulBliss- you are right! I found an error on CalorieKing- they had a tablespoon of corn syrup as 30 cal in one listing, but 57 in all of the others. Agave Onion Sauce, here I come!

I absolutely LOVE that sauce. I've told them at Subway they need to bottle and sell that stuff. And I spent lots of time and went through lots of sauces to try and find something similar. I never found anything exact, but I did find something pretty close - Ken's Steakhouse Light Vidalia Onion dressing. Fantastic stuff and I use it at home when I make "mock" Subway Veggie Delights, which is one of my favorites from there.
