A is for apple!

There are many types of apples on the market to choose from though some popular varieties seem to be Pippin, Granny Smith, MacIntosh, Gala, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious.

Whatever your choice is apples are delicious eaten raw, cooked or in baking and are thought to help lower bad cholesterol and increase good HDL.

They also make a healthy and filling snack. :)

Buying and Storing:

Choose bright, firm fruits without any bruises or blemishes.

Store apples in a cool place away from direct sunlight.

Cooking suggestions:

Apples can be baked, added to soups, added to salads and are nice when baked with a pork roast.

Baked apples

Apples of your choice (sweet variety recommended)
Brown sugar
Raisins and/or mixed dried fruit

Preheat oven to 350F.

Remove the cores from the apples and then score the skin around the circumferance of the apple to prevent it from bursting open when cooking.

Place the apples bottom side down in a baking dish with a bit of water, just enough to cover the bottom of the dish.

Fill the cavities of the apples with a mixture of the brown sugar and dried fruit.

Top each apple with a dob of butter and bake for about 40 minutes or until the apples are soft.

Makes a light and inexpensive treat! :chef:
