Dr. Geri, I am truly passionate about gardening, never out grew playing in the mud. Mom and Dad grew up on farms, and Mom was also passionate about growing Roses. She was a test gardener for Jackson Perkins's new roses as well as growing roses for florists. She paid dearly for breating the fumes of the pesticides she used.

We grow organically after helping nurse Mom in her last years. We certainly realize what chemicals can destroy on a person.

NEW CHALLENGE:

5,000 STEPS OR MORE FOR 4 DAYS A WEEK for next 4 weeks.

7/22/2015 OVER 6,000 steps today and gym, too.
7/23 Pause day - still close at 4600 steps.
7/24/2015 Well over 7,500 steps before noon. Great walking in cool morning. Walked 1-1/4 mile for the first time in almost 2 years!!!
7/25/15 Pause day, gardened 3 hours in cool morning and am really exhausted. Steps will be far less today, but not really a pause day for my body.
7/26/2015 Day 3 over 5,000 steps, + over 90 minutes gardening. Lost ton of water sweating this evening.

What motivation it is to me to know I can come here to post. Sandy

Fri----Day 13, Journal*

Mag, Thanks for that will power dust, added 50 crunches to Saturday.

Love2, Well gardening is truely in your blood, interesting family history, tfs. Yes, windbreak, yard, garden & farm. It is lovely and can consume all your time. I want to spend my time painting, taking care of myself(& dh) and socializing.

Dr Geri, You can do it, you can see the end and have the redemption clause if you really need it.

pigeon, you've got a good start, keep up the great habit.

Diana Forgot you would love to have time to paint. Definitely enjoy the time with DH, too.

We are making a difference! I've noticed as I journal that some things I struggled with 2 years ago are rarely a problem now. What a relief. Sandy

love2 Thanks for sharing that touching story about your mother. It must have been a very hard time for you. My mother is also a gardener. I wish I could follow after her, but my thing is sewing and knitting. My DD however seems to be picking up with the gardening. She has just started a small flower garden in our back yard. I feel so happy that she is digging in the dirt. I think it's good for the soul.

Mag, Thank goodness you are encouraging your daughter, and agree it is good for her soul!

Sewing took the place of gardening when our 4 children were young. I sewed for the three girls and myself. When our family business moved out of the house and into a building 5 miles away, I gave up sewing - working 60 to 70 hours a week away from home left not time to sew.

Now I have time, I may resume this winter when gardening season is over. Better get the Bernina serviced and ready. Wow, hadn't even had the desire for ages. Thanks Mag for mentioning sewing.

I no longer can do needlepoint that I loved. Arthritis AND developed an allergy to wool, and needlepoint only works well with good old wool. Knitting is too hard for me, doggone it.

love2 Arthritis can be painful, and I'm sorry to hear that you have that cross. If you can sew on your machine, there is so much you can do with that. I used to sew for my kids too when they were younger. I stopped sewing for them when they got into their teens, but just recently my youngest asked me to make her a dress, so I'm having fun with that.

My allergies to the fluffy angora or mohair yarn have gotten worse over the years, but I can still knit cotton, silk, and rayon without too much sneezing. I really like the way a lacy cotton cardigan looks, so pretty, so feminine, so impossible to find in stores.

So many projects, so little time . . .

Anyway it's such a joy to see my daughter working in her garden. Even my DH has jumped in and is helping her a little. It's nice to see a bond being formed between father and daughter.

Day 16--Sunday, July 26: No sweets, no spuds.
Day 17--Monday, July 27: No sweets, no spuds.
Day 18--Tuesday, July 28: No sweets, no spuds. Just three more days to make it through.

I wish very much that I could sew. I would love to alter and create clothes for myself, make costumes, and quilt blankets. I likely never will, for lots of reasons not worth going into. But that just means I can keep the talented tailors, costumers, and quilters in business with my patronage. Now all I need are the piles of money I'd love to spend on said patronage!

Gardener, my heart just squeezed to read the story of your mother. You honor her memory with every hour you spend sweating over the labor and reveling in the beauty of your garden.

Dr Geri Thank you for your statement about Mom. She was such a good mother.

Also, sewing skills mean I can re-sew the seams that come loose on store clothes. I'm shocked at the price of simple clothes that have poor seams, too.

Just 3 more days? You've done very well!

Mag I love lacy cotton cardigan. I used to have a beige one that I wore so often, then went to a party and discovered that is a color that doesn't look very good on me, not as bad as orange that really makes me look sick. Now I have a pretty white lacy cardigan but haven't a clue how to make one.

We are celebrating our Anniversary by going to great Italian Restaurant that has Shrimp with Mediterranean veggies that is absolutely the best.

Their bakery is tops, but I'm NOT choosing any sugar for at least 5 weeks.

I've been really busy the last couple of days running around town going to doctors (just routine) and the DMV and other stuff. But I did manage to get my crunches in every day.

Diana I hope your out of town trip was for fun!

Dr Geri I'm quite sure you have talents that I don't have. I believe we are supposed to rely on one another and that's why we don't all have the same talents. Those tailors, costumers, and quilters definitely appreciate your patronage. It's been three days since I posted. How did you do? Did you make it?

love2 I agree. The quality of clothes in the stores is sometimes pathetic. I'm constantly having to fix something I paid good money for. Happy Anniversary! I hope you enjoyed dinner out. It sounds delicious!

Mag You are really on a roll. Glad the doctor's visits were not for something critical.

DH and I really did enjoy our anniversary dinner. Our youngest daughter joined us. She works near by. We met on a blind date years before she was born. She was born on the same date we had that blind date. Felt she needed to join us. Glad we did!

End of 1st week of challenge, Success

Day 19--Wednesday, July 29: No sweets, no spuds
Day 20--Thursday, July 30: No sweets, no spuds
Day 21--Friday, July 31: VICTORY! This victory is especially meaningful because I failed several challenges in a row before this. I have never succeeded with any diet I ever tried, but somehow this thread--where we take things a manageable 21 days at a time, focus on just one habit change, celebrate good choices instead of obsessing about numbers on a scale, compete with ourselves to make it all the way to the 21st day, and support each other to try again when we don't make it--really resonates with me.

Magistra, keep crushing it on your challenge, you're in the home stretch.
Gardener, happy anniversary!
Hard Working Dog, hope to see you back here when you get home.
Obsidian, Cindy, and all other chicks up for a challenge, go for it!

I cannot commit to a new challenge in the next month, I think I would be setting myself up for failure given what will be happening in my life. I will try to post in other TFC threads to try to keep myself pointed in the right direction. And then when things settle down in Geriopolis in September, I'll be back here ready for my next challenge.

Mon--Day 15,Journal and 50 situps.
Tues- Day 16 Jounal
Weds--Day 17, Journal
Thurs- Day 18, Journal and worked all day.
Fri---Day 19, Journal and worked all day.
Sat- Day 20, Journal, more weeding and came home.
Sun--Day 21---Last day of journal challenge----and day of rest. I plan on a foot soak and painting my nails to end this day.

-------Not sure if I need an exercise challenge or food challenge next, will get back with decision in a day or two.

mag, I can see I'm in good company with your quote "So many projects, so little time". You're doing great on your crunches.

Sandy, Glad you found a habit challenge to fit your lifestyle. Hope your anniversary dinner was fabulous and no sugar for 5 weeks, wow. You are forming great habits all around.

Dr. Geri, on completing your challenge----yeah!!! Understand the busy month ahead. That is why I did the 50 situp last challenge, not a lot of time, still gives a good result. We will miss you, hope your month goes smoothly. Hear from you in August.

pigeon, Cindy and Obsidian, how are you doing?
