Smile Started Induction 10/4/04

Did anybody else start induction yesterday? Just thought I'd start an accountability thread, and also see what other people are doing on induction. I bought the book (NDR) but for some reason I'm still having trouble being exactly sure what's allowed and what's not on induction! So here's yesterday-

Breakfast: 4 eggs, scrambled with 2 slices of ham cut up in it and 1/4 cup Mexican blend cheese and two slices of turkey bacon

Lunch: 14 grilled garlic and herb shrimp (I get these from the schwans man...you can have 14 for 2 carbs)

Dinner: one cheeseburger, no bun, with two slices bacon, lettuce, and mayonnaise and one caesar salad with no croutons.

Snack: 4 monterey jack cheese cubes

96 oz water

I'll guess I'll wait til tomorrow to post today so I make sure to post everything...

So a few questions for anyone still reading this post...hehe....are caesar salads ok? I'm not sure about the dressing...oh, and what about any chinese food? I don't mean chinese recipes, I'm just wondering what I can order at a chinese place besides egg drop soup!

Thanks!
Megan

Hey Megan- welcome.....it can be confusing since in one book he says it's ok to make up 20 grams of induction food using whatever you want ( basically) I think the new version of the book is more specific....watch the calories too- not that you have to do it like on a diet, but I found out the hard way you cant go hog wild (as it were)-chinese is hard since even some of the dishes you'd THINK would be ok, may not be- like brocolli beef since they usually use a sauce to thicken it....roast duck is probably allright....I'd steer clear of restaurants as much as you possibly can during induction.

For chinese, if you MUST go, get steamed ckn or beef w/veggies and no sauce, sorry.

Good luck !!!!

Watch out for dressings, if your not sure, don't eat it. Caesar's come in may forms and shapes. I've had them ranging from 0 carbs - 12 carbs per serving. If you need to go out and eat, bring your own dressing, that way theres no goofing or second guessing. I would think most places buy cheap dressings so beware!!

For questions, ask away, its the only way to learn.

Hugs !!!

Hi Megan. Welcome! I love shopping Schwan's. I buy the California Blend vegetables, take out the carrots and save them for company. I also buy the thick slice bacon, chicken drumsticks and have bought the burger patties. I will try the Garlic Herb Shrimp today. (He comes tonight)...they sound good.

Dressings are tricky. While on induction, I only used oil and vinegar just to play it safe, or used the dressings recipes from: Dr. Atkins' Quick & Easy New Diet Cookbook by Robert C. Atkins, MD, & Veronica Atkins (companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution)

I like Blue Cheese Dressing, but still have to be careful with restraunt and bottled.

There's a Ceaser Dressing in this book, but it uses a hard-boiled egg instead of the usual raw egg for safety. If you'd like the recipe, I'll post it for you.

Also, the somked Salmon Dressing is delicious!

Default Thanks!

You guys are great! I do have some recipes for salad dressings so I think I will do that or just use oil and vinegar to be safe!

So here's yesterday:

Breakfast: two turkey sausage patties with mustard, one deviled egg, one cup decaf coffee with 1 tbsp splenda

Lunch: two ham roll ups (romaine lettuce, one slice ham, and spicy mustard) and two turkey roll ups (romaine lettuce, one slice turkey, and mayo)

Dinner: My husband found a great zero carb flank steak recipe in one of my low carb cookbooks so we had that and I had a salad with blue cheese dressing that ws only 2 carbs for 2 tbsp....but I really hated the dressing so I'll do oil and vinegar tonight. I also had another devilled egg.

For snacks I had 2 of these little pepperoni/beef bites....looks like a slim jim cut up into little pieces, you know? I'm not sure what to call them! And I also had about 6 cheese cubes.

So far I can really tell a difference in the amount of food I'm eating. Yesterday I had also brought about 1/2 cup of tuna for lunch but I didn't even eat it because I wasn't very hungry.

How long does it take to get into ketosis? 3 days? And what kind of meals are you guys eating?

Thanks for the help and encouragement!
Megan

Meg- I start testing at 3 days but sometimes I dont test positive for 4 or 5 ....I eat about like you do...but probably more-lol....

I eat cheddarwurst just about every morning and if you read wed. chat now Im officially a spaghetti squash junkie ( and I hate squash).....lots of eggs ( and all that that implies) and I always have several small servings of flan from the book in my fridge ( but after I cook it I put it in my blender...it makes a kind of cinnamon-y mousse)

Hi everyone,
I started Induction on 9/22 and ended today. The bad news is that I had two big setbacks. One was a "Biker Bash 2004" where I had to wine coolers. Next was my neighbors sons 30th birthday last Sat night, I had "some" jello shots. I know this was dumb, but sometimes I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Anyhow, my stick was purple most of the time....my total loss was only 3.5 pounds. With the two partys I guess I can't complain.....

I do have a question. Let me say here also, that now I am not going to deviate again, I'm done slipping and sipping.....Okay question: When your stick is purple but there is no loss does that mean your eating too many calories or what?

I appreciate you response.......

From doing a google search as well as posing the same question here that was answered by Leenie....I've unfortunately found out that the more purple your strip the more dehydrated you are. I'm thinking that the day after drinking or so your strips were turning very purple???? HTH

Actually, for three days after I didn't do the stick test. Are you telling me that all the stick means is your dehydrated? I thought it met you were burning stored body fat, am I wrong? Oh well, stranger things have happened.

It can mean both Star- think of it this way...ketones are pennies....if you throw 10 pennies into a cup of water...they are pretty concentrated and easy to find right? Throw them into a swimming pool and...not so much. the more purple they turn, the more concentrated the ketones are...and that COULD be related to how much water you drink....drink a cup...more purple...drink a swimming pool- less purple....
I use them everyday...and try not to get TOO caught up in how purple it is....regardless it shows me I'm burning SOMETHING....if nothing else, it's a great mental motivator...if you do get them, get them from the section where the diabetic stuff is...atkins sells them but you get way less of them for way more money....

oops....btw, if the jello shots were made with no carb jello you might be ok...hard alcohol doesnt have carbs the way we think of carbs....the wine coolers are, however, a killer....sugarey much?

hmmm, a thread that tells us we SHOULD drink hard liquor....almost like Brandy is here *wipes a tear*

The jello shots were not sugar free......so they were way bad.
But, my question: If the stick is mauve or purple and I'm not losing weight on the scale, does that mean I'm eating too much and should cut down on intake?
Sorry for all the questions....

Wish i could answer that- Im in the same boat...BUT I read on another thread that the saying "water retention masks weight loss" is something we should all learn well...i think Leenie said that it takes about 5 weeks for your body to figure out its not going to dry up...and then...WHOOSH!
