For example, a salad w/cheese would be more than one gram unless it's tiny. Lettuce has different amounts of carbs depending on the type. Cheese is generally 1 gram per ounce.
My suggestion is to make a habit of always reading labels. Total carbs minus fiber is what you should count. DO NOT trust the carb count that gets posted on the front of packages. I make a game of going to the grocery store and quizzing myself on carb counts. That way when I'm in a situation where I can't read the label, I can still make some educated estimations of my carb count.
