WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE LOW CARB / ATKINS: I started with weight watchers on line but realized that my problem is carbs. I love them and they are my weakness. I was losing weight on WW and not having trouble with self-control but I now that for maintenance I need to constantly be cautious of my carbs so I might as well start now. I lost approx 70lbs 8 yrs ago, 130 but slipped in maintaining it and my weight went to its highest point ever.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT THIS TIME THAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL: I am going to be as commited to maintance as I am to weight loss. I will continue to journal my food intake forever and I will be more careful with my carb intake on maintance. I will choose exercise programs that can be done indoors (as my staple) so that seasonal changes do not make me give up.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE LOW CARB / ATKINS: Three huge reasons.
1. I hate the way low-fat food tastes.
2. I hate to count calories.
3. And last but definitely not least, I am a carb junkie. I know most of my extra weight comes from a combination of a sedentary lifestyle and 'worthless white carbs', both of which I have gotten rid of. The weight is flying off!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IN WEIGHT LOSS: The daily inner battles. Taking my 5 yr old daughter for ice cream and settling for water while she eats a child-size scoop of chocolate chip. Fixing myself a plate of chicken-ala-suzanne*** while my family eats spaghetti.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT THIS TIME THAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL: I hit my rock bottom (everyone's personal rock bottom is different)...cried for a half hour after I realized I'd been kidding myself for the last 6 years about the weight loss and it was never going to happen until -I- made it happen. No more lies or fibs, to myself or anyone else. No more putting it off, no more weaseling out of gym or thinking 'eating this one thing won't hurt'. I'm determined this time.

***chicken-ala-suzanne is a dish I make myself where I pan-fry boneless/skinless chicken strips in a tiny amount of peanut oil with fresh bell peppers, onion, garlic, mushrooms & tomatoes and serve it on a spread of lettuce instead of pasta.

FAMILY INFO (anything you care to share about your family, children, hubby, etc.): I live at home with my hubby, my sister, and my cats.
HOBBIES/INTERESTS: I am interested in many things, but my weight has held me back. I love all kinds of physical activities, but do not participate in many. I would love swimming, tennis, volleyball, bike riding, jogging. I want to go on a river rafting trip eventually.
I like The Sims 2, I love box turtles and am currently working on building an enclosure in my backyard so I can adopt some who need a home. I love road trips, and I love my hubby and my cats. I love all animals!

WHAT IS DIFFERENT THIS TIME THAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL: I am learning to believe that I CAN DO IT! I don't want to waste my life being miserable and missing out because I don't feel confident enough to do something about my weight and get out there and enjoy life.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I am a very nice person, but extremely shy until I know someone well. I am very sensitive. I have been told that I'm a very compassionate person and am easy to talk to. I like to think of myself as open-minded, but I think I am also close-minded and stubborn in some areas.
I want to go back to school to get my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I don't know if I will ever do it, but I hope I can get my confidence level up and just go for it. Right now I am a high school teacher, and the most rewarding experiences I have had in that job is the one-on-one help I have been able to give to individual students - not academically, but on a personal level. I think I will be able to make a bigger difference as a psychologist than I do as a teacher, and I want to feel productive and that I am making a difference. Unfortunately, I do not feel that way in my current job on a regular basis.
WHAT EXPERIENCES CAN YOU SHARE: The one time that I was successful at losing weight and keeping it off, I was consistent most of the time. Just find something and stick with it, and modify as needed if you are not getting the results you want.
Also, do what you feel is right no matter what anyone else says or thinks. You know in your heart what is right for you and just because ten people might think you are wrong and you are the only one that thinks you are right, keep on going because this is the time when you will probably have a breakthrough and make the biggest change your life. This is just something I have found througout my life in all areas, not just dieting. Just believe in yourself. It's what I struggle with every day, but when I am successful at it is when I accomplish the most!

WHAT EXPERIENCES CAN YOU SHARE: I know Atkins works, because the weight just fell off the first time I tried it. And it was easy to keep it off the first 2 years after reaching goal. I really had to make a determined effort to sabotage myself to start gaining again. However once I started putting it back on, it was impossible to stop.
It is much harder this second time, but I know I HAVE to do it.

ATKINS START DATE: 21 July 08 (tried it for a month in 2004).
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE LOW CARB / ATKINS: I tried it in 2004 and loved it (i'm a big meat eater), but for some reason gave up after a month. I did lose 20lbs in that month. A year and a half ago I went on LA Weight Loss...lost 36lbs in less than 3 months. I went to a restaurant one day and had fries with my meal and I kept eating poorly since. Anyway, I gained back the weight I lost with LAWL and developed medical problems (metabolic diabetes and high cholesterol) so I need to shed some weight. No better time to start Atkins than mid-BBQ season!

WHAT EXPERIENCES CAN YOU SHARE: When I was younger I went immediately to what I thought was the meat of the plan and lost a lot of weight. If I had taken the trouble to read the book in depth I would have prepared myself for the major bumps in the road.
Finally, I have read many postings on different boards and there will always be persons that believe it is one way or the highway. When Atkins wrote about metabolic resistance he mentioned zero carb for a short time to get the cravings stopped. Its better to support each other because it can be a tough road.
