Default Questions

My husband wants to start a low-carb diet...how do we determine how MANY carbs he needs, etc? How did all of you start?

I'm a calorie counter....so I'm lost!

It would depend on which low carb plan your DH wants to do. My suggestion would be for him to research the plans like Atkins, Protein Power, South Beach (which technically is not low carb) and decide which one is doable for him.
Personally, I'm on Atkins and have been on it 5 1/2 years. Atkins Induction begins at 20 net carbs (total carbs minus dietary fiber) and slowly progresses in 5 carb increments of additional foods according to the carb ladder until you reach your personal carb level for continuing to lose weight or to maintain your loss...whichever the case may be.

I did South beach- which is about eating the right carbs (but does start out low carb) and I just followed the books instructions (got a copy with shipping and everything for $4 on amazon).

Basically I've started with cutting out all carbs I can, no bread, pasta, rice, no fruit. I eat lean meats and veggies with cheese for the most part. You can also eat nuts but in moderation (some are higher carb).

I also suggest researching- I feel South Beach is less strict than Atkins. I know it says only do phase 1 for 2 weeks, but I'm going to keep it up as long as I can.

Can anyone tell me what are some lean meats I can eat? Is turkey ground considered a lean meat?

Ground turkey BREAST is a lean meat, so is chicken without the skin, lean cuts of beef, and all seafood as long as it's not breaded or fried.

Here's a great list for you:

I dont know too much about these book diet plans but I know with me I just kinda took a page from Dr,. Atkins and try to stay at under 20g carbs a day. To be honest, most days I stay under 5g.

I eat meat, low carb cheeses (which aren't hard to find), fish, mayo, and green veggies.
Salads with oil and vinager.
Diet soda.
and TONS of water.

Its pretty much the easiest diet ever. Ive been on it for about two weeks now and have lost almost 10 pounds.
