Calories for men to lose weight

  • Just curious how many calories the men here eat to lose weight. My husband figured his calories to about 1900 a day (via tdee/bmr calculator and myfitnesspal calculator) and he says he just feels like he is starving.

Is there something that men do to figure this out different than woman?
  • The rule is that the lowest for a woman is 1200 and 1500 for a man. I know women tend to add 300 or more so your husband is actually doing good. Calorie counting is going to make you feel like that sometimes. But it should lessen as days go by.

Though you can go a little bit under that-OR you can go a LOT (talking long term here) IF you have a doctors super vision and approval.

Otherwise you are starving yourself in an unhealthy manner which will cause muscle loss and eventually health problem (And if it gets REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD heart failure-but that's only if you do it for like years).

P.S. No I am not a man lol
  • My fiance just signed up for MFP and it set his calories at 1950. He was eating pretty healthy before he signed up as I've been 'dieting' since November and he cooks for the two of us. So for him that number is actually pretty tough to get to.

I'd recommend that your husband play around with what he eats and try to add more fiber to his diet. I know that really helped me out because I often felt like I was starving when I first started calorie counting.
  • That's close to what my husband eats (he follows WW though but I have translated those to cals for him for most days). But my husband is 5'6" and 170 (trying to lose about 10ish). He's also not active at all (heart problem...can't) so I actually think it's too low. Bump him up 200 (protein) and see if he's still losing. He definitely should not be starving. It's such a selective number...he could have more lean muscle than others so need more calories...who knows...trial and error. Good luck. It's always great to do it together!!!

My husband is 6'7' and lost 100 lbs on what I think was around 1500 a day. I'm pretty sure that's what he shot for.

That's really low for a guy of his height. But I'm glad he was able to stick with it. Just curious, how long did it take him?
