I didn't get any comments until I had lost right around 10% of my starting weight. Then one person did say something and I was more public about the fact that I was working on losing weight, and I've also had to attend work functions that involved eating, so gave a little more detail about my plan and what I can and don't eat right now.
Since then, people feel much more free to comment, and I get compliments a lot, both on how I look, and also because I'm very committed to staying on plan and have consistently resisted any of the goodies that we have had a work.
So at least in my experience, once I made it clear that I was affirmatively working on losing weight and was pleased with my progress, people have felt much more comfortable commenting. Those are my closer co-workers in my dept., people I work with but not as closely have not said anything, I think for all the various reasons discussed above, and I'm not in the same sort of work relationship with them where I would bring it up either.

I lost about 70 lbs before anyone other than my mother and husband said anything about it, and they both knew I was working at it. I really do think no one wants to be all "Congrats on the weight loss!" and have the other person say, "Yeah, chemo will do that to you" or something like that. And, unfortunately, the bigger you start out, the longer it takes for other people to notice . Now that I'm in the 140's, if I lost 20 or 30 lbs, it would be very, very noticeable. But when I started? Not really so much.

this doesn't surprise me in the least. I found that it was soo hard to stay motivated at first, barely got any comments the first 60 pounds, now I am down 115 pounds and if I lose even 2 pounds everyone notices. At first it kinda pissed me off, all I could think was wow I dropped 50 and few notice, drop 3 pounds and everyone comments WTH.
Then I realized that as you get smaller even small changes are more noticable. Keep it up you have worked hard to get where you are and you aren't doing it for them anyways. I remember going from a size 22 to a 20 took a 35 pound weight loss but going from size 12 to 10 was only 10 pounds.
Good Luck it is all worth it I feel like a new and free person.

I've lost 45lbs and I can't tell at all and no one has ever said anything-sometimes when we're so big it takes a longer time and a bigger loss for it to be noticeable.

Same here. I looked almost the same at 350 as at 385.

Also has to do with the fact that people notice/care about/judge others' weight less than we think they do

Stay strong! Congratulations on the weight-loss thus far!! And, remember, you're not alone. *hugs!!* I've lost 25+ since earlier this year, and I haven't received a peep from friends and family. I just chalk it up that *I* see and feel a difference, and that's what matters. Also, they don't know what's coming! ;-) We're bringing sexy back!

Keept doin' it!
I can understand your dissappointment. Try not to let it discourage you or give you ANY reason to gain an ounce back. Slow is the WAY to go and you are ROCKING it!
Keep it up!

yeah, the main thing is to work on your own body for your own health and how you want it to look. others will eventually comment, maybe more than you really want to hear. i didnt make an announcement of "i'm going to lose weight now" and apparently people assumed i never would/could, so when they saw it had happened right before their eyes, they freaked out. never mind while i was doing it, bring an apple and almonds for snacks, etc. actually doing healthy things was totally ignored during the process. it was only after significant weight loss that i got the gawks and freak outs.

Frankly what other people see and think about you is irrelevant and won't contribute to the happiness with yourself and your weight loss over the long term..
Compliments are nice, but only surface deep...I want to give you congrats on all the hard work you have done so far, its not easy..
What matters is how YOU feel and think about how you are doing..
keep up the good work, you go girl!

A few years ago, I lost about 40 lbs during the course of a semester. NNo one at school said a word. Then I went on summer break, and when I came back to school in the Fall, I had maintained but not lost anything else. The first day back, at least 10 people commented on how much weight I had lost. One girl said, "What'd you do, run all summer??" I think it goes to show the whole "seeing-you-everyday-and-not-noticing" thing.
Now, I gained all that weight back and a little more. I hate to admit it, but I'm one of those people who doesn't like getting compliments on weight loss from people I'm not close to. I feel uncomfortable, and I don't know how to respond. It's not that I think the complimenter has anything but good intentions, but when they ask, I feel like if I say "Yes, actually, I have lost a few pounds" I'm going to have to answer questions, talk about it, and generally admit awkwardly to someone I don't know "Yes, I have been fat for a long time, I knew I needed to do something about it but was too lazy, and now I'm finally doing what I should've been doing all along. Thanks for noticing."

I am struggling with the same thing. It is true that people who see you everyday will not notice as much as those who only see you occasionally. What I have also found to be true in if you are heavy it takes a long time to drop a clothes size. I was very discouraged by this. It took almost 40lbs to go from a size 26 jeans to a size 24 for me! I have seen other posters say it takes less weight to change sizes after that first drop and I sure hope so. Congrats and your weight loss and keep at it! Hope

Seriously what is the deal with this. Same exact thing here. I mean if it takes 35lbs to drop each size - size 10 would be at 75lbs. Clothing is so strange.

Once I was in a small crafts group with 8 or 9 people we met once a week.
There were 2 wemen there who talked about losing a blund one week and then gaining the same pound week after week. During the 15 weeks I was there I lost down from 18o to about 155 and no one said a word. Then a few
years ago I had been ill for a couple of months and when I got better I promply gained about 20 lbs in a 2 month period then people commented
on how much weight I had LOST ? I have just about given up people always
noticing if I lose weight.
