Thumbs up Thursday

Diet Coaches/Buddies – Standard walk, CREDIT moi, that followed after a 6:45 am bird walk to see the migrating warblers. The warblers still aren't here yet - except for one Palm Warbler and one Yellow-rumped Warbler. No one ever sees a solitary Yellow-rump because, when they arrive, they arrive by the score. Seems that northerly winds have kept the warblers away, according to the folks who speak with confidence of the reasons for bird behavior. I came to learn a new word this week: bespoke - adjective BRITISH, (of goods, especially clothing) made to order, "a bespoke suit". Feels strange; don't know why it's new to me. Has anybody ever used that word?

Eating on plan, CREDIT moi, included avoiding snack during some afternoon tension, and eating reasonably at an evening potluck. I only ate reasonably (not perfectly) at the potluck since I had the ginger cookies for dessert - no fruit was available. Naturally, I expected to be punished by the scale this morning. Instead, it jittered down a pound. It's messing with my brain to continue to be rewarded on the days that I'm least stellar. Oh, Well.

onebyone – I always underestimate tortilla chips - they're just evil in my book. "DON'T FREAK OUT" is often the better path.

Debbie (Lexxiss) – Sending supportive thoughts as you continue to fight your way through crummy news. Kudos for some good food choices - love reading that you were able to find your way to a blood orange.

nationalparker – Yep, "start over. AGAIN. For freakin' again" - whatever it takes; you're in it for the long run. Kudos for sticking to half of that Cajun dinner. [Nope, haven't seen "Kill the Messenger" movie - I'll watch for it. A friend told me about her hot water heater that lasted 50 years; that's a real difference - although I'd be mighty pleased with your 20 years.]

Karen (karenrn) - Yay for sparkling waters.

p.a. - Kudos for continuing to post even when "laying low."

Um, yes.

It tends to be used of suits rather than dresses. You can also use it, for example, with cabinet-making: 'a bespoke kitchen'. Warning: bespoke is usually code for 'expensive'. I think it conveys a more expensive feel than 'made to measure' and is certainly stratospherically above 'custom'. ETA: it could be used of onebyone's commissions, I'm sure, especially if you're moving some of your work to upmarket prices.

ETA: “When it comes to ancient monuments like this there is no blueprint or plan to follow — instead you have to provide a bespoke restoration solution and that means working together.” Just read this as part of work. Strikes me that we each require a bespoke solution for weight loss, whether we are an ancient monument or someone a bit younger!

Bespoke means that all your lumps, bumps and strange bits will be effortlessly disguised and smoothed away. You or your kitchen will look, as we say over here, 'a million dollars'.

Go for it, Bill!

Good to be drawn back onto the Beck thread once more. I know Bill does this on purpose. Once again, I'm coming full circle to acknowledging the power of CBT and diet. This morning has been too busy, culminating in unexpectedly taking a neighbour to hospital. Having a response ready to use each time I came in (twice) would probably have been useful.

Lunch now. I planned chicken soup and hadn't got beyond that. Salad was a dim thought somewhere in my mind. I think I'll just have a bowlful and save any salad for a mid-afternoon snack.

Good luck with your day, everyone! Special hug for Lexxiss. I'm thinking of you as my path sometimes crosses yours.

Good Morning,

Climbing out of an overeating day on Monday [as in 800 calories and 100 grams of carbs over ]. Yesterday was OP so credit for pulling out of a tailspin the day before. Credit also for staying faithful to my ongoing exercise efforts.

As onebyone said: "I play catchup all week instead of really moving ahead. I need to change it up." Yes and yes.

nationalparker: "For freakin' again." Again, yes. But think where we'd be if we didn't keep trying!

Today is an Intermittent Fast day and I'm on track with the exercise as well.

BBE: Yes. We fountain pen users say "bespoke" a lot since often the hobby leads one to purchase custom, handmade fountain pens whose nibs [tips] have the additional "tuning" done by a specialist who grinds them to suit one's handwriting.

I earned my sticker for reading my Advantages list 5 days in a row. I've decided I'm playing this game too slowly, so I'm going to aim for 3 days in a row with each new skill and see if I can get through the ten Foundation Strategies in the blue book by the end of May.

Foundation Strategy 2 is Sit Down, Eat Slowly, and Enjoy Every Bit. I do pretty well with the first two if I'm paying attention at all. I established the Sit Down habit in 2009 and finally conquered Eat Slowly last year. I've never fully accomplished the third, so, now is the time. For the next three days, I'm going add the challenge to eat without distractions for all meals except supper with DH. If I want to read at the table, I'll have a cup of tea after I eat and read then.

WI: NA kg, Exercise: +40 1270/1300 minutes for April, Food: 70% op, Read my Advantages and Responses: yes

karenrn: I've started collecting light-weight jackets and cardigans. All the cutest dresses are sleeveless, it seems, but my arms aren't cute in them at all! Many of them will work under a jacket or cardigan and look more polished that way, anyway. I've noticed that older, classier actresses wear jackets over dresses on the red carpet.

BillBlueEyes: my husband learned bespoke a few years ago and taught it to me. We were in a phase of improving our wardrobes so that we could attend more events. We never went the bespoke route, but were aware of it. I adore silverbirch's application of the word for weight loss -- I'm working on my bespoke weight loss strategy now.

Lexxiss: sending virtual hugs to counter crummy news.

Good morning coaches,

Yesterday was another really good day on the food plan, credit. The sparkling waters are feeling like a treat, so no adult beverages. We had a lot of vegetables with dinner and that was so tasty too. It's so nice to be back doing the shopping and we are kind of doing the cooking together, which we really haven't ever done much. I just got back from a great hilly walk with Hiking Suzanne. Some of it was really hard for me, especially the last 30 minutes (we walked about 90 minutes). But she was really nice about waiting up and we're doing it again tomorrow. I really appreciate it! I've got a long way to go in the next 4 months, but I can do it if I just do it.

My weight is back down to 147 (after it had slipped up a pound or two) and I'm hoping to keep it heading in that direction. I'm actually feeling a little bit hopeful that I can get to where I'd like to be and begin collecting a wardrobe.

Gardenerjoy Yes I think a little sweater or jacket will have to be in order, unless I can find something with sleeves. The problem is that just a dress with sleeves would be so much cooler. It is warm here and will be warm where the wedding is also. I'm going to work on the arms too.

Silverbirch I was hoping to see you respond to "bespoke".

BBE Wow, you are doing great! I wouldn't be able to pass by the ginger cookies either. I love them and molasses cookies, too. You are certainly doing lot of things right.

Lexxiss Thinking good thoughts for you.

Onebyone I hate those "hungry days". I had a string of them recently. When I do, I wonder if they'll ever go away, but luckily they seem to.

Nationalparker I'm probably on day one, take 2080. That's most Monday's since I've been about 20. I've battled my weight almost my entire life. The good news is that the range has narrowed as I've gotten older. I'm hoping that continues and eventually becomes just a 5 pound range. As the others have said and I say to myself all the time, "what if I didn't keep trying?" That would not be a good thing. So good for you, me and all of us for continuing the work necessary to be healthy!

Waving to the rest of you.

Thumbs up Speak and you'll bespoke(n) too -- LOL

Coaches

Well my weight continues to dance with me on my official weigh-in days this month. Today: 276. Up 1.6lbs.

Next week I will see a loss, dang it all!
And HOW will I do it?

Baby steps daily. Here is minimum I will do daily this week.

1. drink 4 glasses of water. minimum.YES
2. eat according my plan daily. Keep dipping into extra allowable points to a minimum. See if I can avoid using them all together for this one week.YES
3. Back-up plan for #2 - if going into extra allowable points, keep it to 7 extras and no moreYES.
4. 5000 steps a day. minimum.
5. track everything.YES
6. check in here.YES
7. plan plan planYES
8. have a plan for when I need to be distractedYES
9. VISUALIZE the BENEFITS of being smaller which are certainly evident to me as I try to shop for summer clothes. With very large upper arms it is a challenge.
10. check in here daily.YES
11. make kale chips this week. I promised my new ww friend I would do this and have not followed through for 2 weeks. Time to do what I say.

billblueeyes I had a vague notion of what bespoke was. I certainly know exactly what it is now and would love a bespoke wardrobe to hide my lumps and bumps as silverbirch described! Your 100 yr old Boston house must have many bespoke solutions holding it together!

gardenerjoy I admit I heaved a heavy sigh as I read:

I just thought man. when does this all end already? so much work.such drudgery. Not very Beckian I'm afraid but quite human. YOU have been amazingly thorough. You have wrenched from the pages of Beck more insight and information than I think I would have ever in a hundred years. I tip my hat to you my friend and look forwqard to what you glean from the new blue book.

karenrn Thank you for this. Such optimism!

I need more of that, more of the "of course this will happen if I do it it will work so do it". I so admire your hiking ability and desire. I have very little desire to ambulate anywhere around here. When I was in Key West I walked everywhere for hours, effortlessly. I was in Sedona a few times and the same thing. Can't get me stay still. But here? Dullsville. And very walker unfriendly.
Credit on keeping up with Hiking Suzanne! Bravo!

silverbirch It did my heart good to see you use my work as an example of pricey custom made high end up market goods. I am not a maker who presents themselves that way but for some people in some places you need to do that or you are not taken seriously. I'm half-way there. Very good to see you check in though I know you lurk. Sorry to read you are attending to emergencies. I have been shirking visiting my mother since she is in such a good place right now. I have gone the other way and "should" feel guilty (I feel my sister's disapproval) but I don't. I check in, my mother is happy, she has friends and a full life where she now is. And she is safe. There will come a time when she becomes more ill and I may need to step up once more. I'll be here for that too. I am enjoying my break. I wish you a break as well.

spanky Credit from me to you for pulling yourself out of a tailspin. I am for sure going to try to have a more even relationship with my food this week. I don't want to feel that catch up feeling. I want to jump forward if I can.

nationalparker, Lexxiss, Violette_R, Ceejay, p.a., Cheatin'Vegan, dailypractice, curlyjax, Maryann, and those who read and never post How was your day? How's it going??

Silverbirch what a nice surprise to find you here!

NationalParker Discouraging how often we begin again and again, me, too. Actually some of the habits are truly working, but most of them aren't even on my mind. Instead of waiting till Monday, I begin NOW before supper. Time to read my cards, pray a bit, and think I can do it.

Debbie, prayers flying to you.

Today, DH's tooth ache meant trip to Dentist, antibiotic, but a 7 week wait till they can cut out that back tooth that causes problems. Doesn't hold a cap, (3 different ones tried). Time to just junk it after infection clears.

So grateful for friends who took over for me at meeting today.

Edging closer to the weekend, so I'm exceedingly thankful for that. Work has been incredibly busy and I'm weary in mind and body.

Thanks for the support in my unending restarts! What I just realized is... every time I go down, I seem to pop right back up to 169 or so. No written plan for today but had the outline in my mind and did well. Dinner was large salad with a bit of protein. I felt I needed a volume meal.

Decided to wait a day to prep the lasagna for our neighbors so they have it fresh for the weekend, and accomplished a lot at home this evening so I'll have time tomorrow evening to cook in a super clean kitchen.

Last year my goal was to fit into some zip off hiking pants that I bought on a decent deal at Columbia the year before but then they quickly were too tight. Or I should say I quickly didn't fit into them; the pants didn't shrink. Last year - no issues at all, fit perfectly, but nowhere to wear them Yep, now they're back on the list of what I have that doesn't fit. Goal: Be able to wear them EASILY for our camping trips this summer. (well, one long one and a few weekend ones...)

I need to also create an updated distractions list ... I enjoy baths to relax (but only in the evening so that doesn't work when I'm bored midday), gardening - and have a TON of gardening to tackle, along with reading, a lot of deep cleaning/organizing that I can do, so need to note a few things there as well, exercise bike, walking, ... But the #1 thing on my list needs to be to shut the pantry or fridge door FIRST. Even now I'm fending off the desire to get a leftover 120 calorie maple cream egg that I LOVE. I have a few bought after Easter that I'm doling out one/week, but not tonight.

Hoping to catch a few extra minutes for personals tomorrow - I've been a slacker and I apologize.

Default Friday

As maryann says, just for today, I will always eat sitting down. That's not just meals, it's anything else as well.

To reiterate, today, anything I eat, I eat sitting down.

Have a good Friday, all!
