Beginning Atkins

My weight is out of control - I don't have much to lose exactly (27 pounds would be very nice!), but I have simply been gaining weight like crazy over the past year and a half.

I've dabbled with diets, but never stayed focused. I am committing myself now to Atkins and really intend to do it right.

I am a believer in the low-carb lifestyle, and, in fact, have tried to do the Paleo Diet etc, but I need more guidelines and/or a support network.

So that's what brought me to Atkins. The new book is very good, and the website with their starter pack is helpful (starter pack arrived a while ago and I'm just getting started now!).

So - here I am, and the biggest challenge will be two weeks without a glass (or a bottle!) of red wine and a big plate of mom's home-made spaghetti...

:welcome2:to Atkins!
I've been doing Atkins 8+ years and can tell you its a great plan that works when its done correctly.
I personally am not a fan of the "new" books or of the Atkins website. Sadly, after Dr. Atkins death in 2003, Atkins Nutritionals Inc. took over and used Dr. Atkins name to turn his research & years of hard work into a business:( I always recommend Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 or prior versions) because those are the books Dr. Atkins himself wrote.
From what I've read & understand, the "starter pack" includes Atkins bars. While they are marketed as being "appropriate for all phases of Atkins"....they are not. They are particularly not appropriate for Induction. They contain ingredients like soy, milk & peanuts....all of which you will not find on the acceptable foods list. You may want to read this article for a better understanding of those tricky labels.....http://www.phlaunt.com/lowcarb/19059967.php
Hope this helps!!!
You CAN do this!
All the best to you!:)

Welcome Vin Rouge! You'll find friendly Atkins chicks and lots of good suggestions, recipes and support on the board. Mom can probably make that spaghetti Atkins friendly without a problem; you'll just be eating meatballs and sauce on...a plate! :)

Thanks for the support and information.

I'll keep an eye out at used book stores for the older version of Atkins's book - it does make sense to read the very book written by him and not the corporation.

Meat sauce (which includes spareribs) on a plate would be just fine by me! Somebody said that pasta and bread etc are just vehicles to carry the tasty stuff to our mouths!
