Hi everyone!
nothing new on my planet.

How'd the casino night go, Aud?
Good job on finishing 2 weeks of induction, Ruby.
Glad your computer is working again Puncezilla.
Did you enjoy your sister time, Sylvia?
Azure - that's some major writing!
JG-how exiting about your partner losing weight and being on the same path as you. I remain hopeful that Mr. W will some day 'see the light'. I keep reading him excerpts from GCBC re: diabetes and cholesterol.

went to the dinner party last night - not great food choices but did my best.

really enjoying reading GCBC by Gary Taubes. Sylvia, weren't you reading it now also? What do you think of it?

Kris, I'm reading that book now too. I'm really enjoying it. I think it's sad and infuriating how scientists, government, and the media can manipulate the facts to fit what they believe and not what the science is telling them. I'm about half way through now. It helps to understand how what we eat can do for us, aside from weight loss. Health is a big motivator.

I had good day today, DH is leaving tomorrow and coming back Friday with his Parents. I hope the week isn't to stressful, having house guests usually is for me. DHs Grandpa and his wife are having a big birthday bash on Saturday so there will be plenty of temptation. (It will be in the Veterans home where he lives). The first thing I think of, if I have to go to something like this is at least there will be good food. But now I can't distract myself with food if it turns into a long and boring evening. I didn't realize how I've often used food for entertainment.

Anyhoo it's way past my bedtime, I better get some sleep. Have a good night.

I agree Puncezilla, about how infuriating it is. It's like these scientists had/have blinders on. I heard Ornish say how Taubes only presented studies that supported his point of view and that's why he didn't put credience in the book (or something to that effect). It just seems like there is too much information re: the role of Insulin and carbs to keep dismissing it.

I baked those Oppsie's today for the first time and was pleasantly surprised at how yummy they are! I just ate them plain, fresh from the oven. I think I'll try Cleo's cauliflower pizza crust next.

Kris, I am thrilled my DBF is doing so well with his way of eating! He was told just before Christmas his cholesterol was high, since then he's lost 35 lbs by changing his diet to mainly fish, chicken, veggies, salads....he does eat an occasional sweet potato and he uses ezekiel bread for lunch & eats cereal or oatmeal for breakfast. He's eliminated white bread, potatoes, rice, pasta & sugar Did I mention I'm very, very proud of him

It’s so quiet around here today.

I weighed in today and was 192, this time I'm not letting anything distract me I want to be in the 180s so bad, hopefully another week and I'll see 189. Then I will change my ticker.

I've been cleaning like crazy trying to get ready for company. My MIL is a very organized and tidy person. I know if she comes and the floor is dirty she'll clean it so I feel the need to make everything as clean as it can be. She is a very nice and helpful person but I feel weird about anyone helping me clean my house.

Sooner or later more people will have to recognize the huge amount of evidence that too many refined carb are unhealthy and stop insisting we all follow low fat diets. I think it’s just too hard for people to admit they might be wrong. I need to find some time to read or I'll have to return the book before I'm done. I think I will buy it anyway, it has so much good information and I'm sure I'll want to reread it.

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend!

JG - I'm sure you are a great support for him! Happy for both of you.

Puncezilla - oh, do I remember the days of MIL's.....my (x-MIL) used to iron underwear and she had specific days of the week when she would clean certain areas of the house. MAJOR issue between X and I when we first got married. Thankfully, that was a lifetime ago!

My weekend started with a 60 minute cardio session. Still at a stand-still with weight loss but am trying not to get crazy about it. Monday will be 5 weeks of no scale movement. Not sure whether to mix things up or to stay the course....I think I'm on my 6th week of OWL and typically at about 30 net carbs per day. I'm keeping cheese and nuts to under 1 ounce per day and dairy to 1/2 cup milk in my cappo. Oh, and I dropped to max of 4 splenda per day. Might wait until Monday and see if I have any weight removal before I try anything else.

Has anyone done any experimenting with coconut oil?

HI Angels --
I am still doing well on induction and now am down 12 pounds -- its very exciting.
But the GOBSMACKING bloke turned out to be a non-starter -- even though his flat was GORGEOUS and he is lovely, and all that. But it turned that he is about 12 years younger than me -- which I didn't get -- and is lost in unrequited love for some lovely young woman, about 12 years younger that he! It was all somewhat embarrassing and I felt like a jerk, when he told me that he isn't interested in me even remotely, romantically, and I felt very very sorry for myself afterwards. But I went out to eat for supper with an old friend of mine -- male -- and ate a big CHOP, rare, and casesar salad. No slipping into the despond of sugar...
But I really need a reality check on myself -- my fantasy life was obviously taking over real life!
I think I need to focus on my writing and my diet and leave the rest to fate.
sadder but wiser, Ruby

awwww, POOP ruby!

Hi Angels!

Lost $10 @ The Casino but had a ball . . . signed up for re-election (I'm a Union Official laid off due to a supplier strike) - THEN attended some election parties & rallies for the strikers . . . so far away for me that I ended up staying with some GF's from work - Had so much fun - stayed an extra night - Think SLUMBER PARTY for gals in their 40's!

Yes, I've been waaaaaaaay OffPlan . . . but no regrets.

Catch up with everyone later . . . Hang in There rube!

Thanks so much for that Aud -- yup, I am just out of the tub, into my beautiful banana republic dress (they just opened their first store in London, ever), which looks a lot better on me this week than last, and am off to a birthday event for a young colleague at the Union Tavern in Clerkenwell, a lovely old part of London. Not going to linger on the UTTER HUMILIATION OF IT ALL, but remember that as we were walking to the tube as he was going off to a dinner at the House of Commons (jeez! I had no idea that he was going to turn out to be so posh) and I was going to meet a friend, he said, "Look at my ears, see how red they are?" and Yes, they were indeed red and very sticky-out sideways from his head, so I said, "yes" and he said touch them, they are very warm", so I swallowed hard and touched the damn things, and he said, 'They are great, they are like my radiators and keep me warm." Now really, is that boyfriend material? I don't think so -- more like a twelve year old nephew. Back to the drawing-board for this broad.

Hi, Angels! I hope everyone had a great week and weekend.

Sorry it didn't work out with the bloke, RubyJ. Focus on you and how beautiful you are and they will come.

I had a really good visit with my sister. We walked 3.1 miles the first day, to the mall and back, and 1.6 the second day, up a trail in the Hollywood hills. Half of the 1.6 miles was going up a fairly steep grade. And I know I always think the coming down is easier but it really isn't. You have to use your legs to keep from sliding. I didn't workout on Firday because Bath & Body works was having a $5 sale. I just couldn't pass up getting some smell-good stuff for me and the kids cheap.

Then my mom called Saturday morning. My grandmother died. The funeral is on my son's birthday. So, I won't even get to spend the day with him because I'll be in the midwest.

I need to make sure that I am conscience of how I am eating because dealing with something like this can cause problems with staying OP. I am hoping that I don't let this cause me to have a setback. So, far yesterday I ate really good. I got enough calories but a little too much protein. We'll see what happens.

Have a great day Angels.

Sylvia -
I am so sorry to hear that your grandmother has died. And such a shame that it will mean missing your son's birthday. You are a good daughter to go home for the funeral.
Staying alive and healthy is what you have to do for your family and your son and yourself. SO stick with the foods you know that please you and fill you up. And the rest of it will be easy.
Have a safe trip to the midwest, Ruby

Thank you RubyJan. That was a really nice thing to say.

I've been thinking about your situation and I must say, I've found myself in that same predicament a few times. The thing is the time when I really wasn't looking for someone was the exact moment when I found a really good person. I was more focus on me and what I needed to change about me to make me a better person. It was this period of self reflection and total self-absorbtion that was attractive. When you have something else on your mind, other than them, that's when they want your attention. It sounds crazy, but it really works.

Good luck.

Good morning ladies, I've been awol.

I haven't been doing Atkins lately, but my weight is staying low because I haven't been eating much. Lately hubby has been cooking so late at night that I wind up falling asleep before dinner and missing it. During the day I haven't been eating much either.

I'm pleased that the scale hasn't climbed. I know I probably have more water weight than I did on Atkins so I think if that were gone I would find my weight even a little lower than it was (when it was naturally low on Atkins).

Hubby still hasn't found work, and to eat at all I have to make use of what we have in the house. So I've been falling back on an old staple I used to use for dieting when I was a kid. One slice of bread with a tablespoon of peanut butter and a tablespoon of jelly. When I was a kid I figured out how many calories that was and it was pretty low, so that has been lunch lately. We've been buying some unusual veggetables and trying a few new things, and that has been interesting (and not too expensive) and too, I read something the other day that I thought was very helpful.

I was cleaning out my old email address from all the spam and I found someone trying to send me a diet book about "enzymes". I was curious as to what those were and whether they would actually help to lose weight or not, so I did some research to find out what an enzyme is and what it does.

I really didn't know. I'm not sure I do now either, because the explanation I was given was pretty scientific, but apparently enzymes are things (bio somethings) that speed up chemical changes in other things without themselves being changed. We have enzymes in our saliva, and these (when we chew our food) help the food to be broken down to be absorbed. The food then drops into our stomach where stomach acid breaks it down further and then it passes into the small intestines where other enzymes break the food down further and cause the nutrients from the food to go into our blood.

But what I was reading is that if you don't chew your food properly and well, you don't start that initial digestion process very well. This can be a cause for acid reflux and various other stomach issues because the acid then has to do a lot of the job of the enzymes in your mouth. The food doesn't get digested properly and you wind up not getting the nutrition out of your food. Also THAT causes you to be more hungry.

So I decided to try an experiment and to chew my food way more thoroughly than I have been. My husband brought me a big plate of spaghetti one night and I made every effort to chew each mouthful very thoroughly before swallowing even one little bit.

It was weird. I found that it was a LOT of work to chew so much, and that I was tired of eating before half the plate of spaghetti was gone and so I wound up leaving most of it on the plate. Hmmm.

Too I learned about enzymes is that food naturally has them in it, but raw foods retain it. If you heat food beyond a certain point it kills the enzymes. So raw food is better.

Anyway I thought it was interesting and maybe a key as to why I have spent most of my life gaining weight rather than being able to maintain naturally what I weigh. Eating more because of eating too fast and not digesting it all well. It made sense. So I've been making a conscious effort to slow down and to chew much more thoroughly and I think it will help as time goes by. I'll let you know.

I've been lucky in the mil department - mine is a dear who I wish I saw more often but both dh's parents are getting on in age & don't travel anymore. I'd welcome ANYONE to come clean this hovel at this point tho'!

Another revelation.

I think I'm resentful that I am the breadwinner & altho' I rationally understand that dh couldn't help becoming disabled - I've been stalling cleaning/organizing like I usually do on time off 'cause I know that when I rtwork it will just all go kaflooey again . . . nevertheless . . . gotta get on it . . . just saw those little spring "sugar" ants scurrying around the backporch & kitchen sill . . . who knows what wildlife will move in here next?

Wishing the temp would drop into the 30's again - these insects (had mosquitoes already!) - would all benefit from a cold zapping rain!
