100 lb. Club - It's come back to bite me in the butt!

Hi y'all...sorry I haven't been around. I've been going through some health stuff. The sad thing is--all of my problems (or potential ones) could have been avoided had I dropped the weight years ago. Let me explain....

I have always been overweight, but surprisingly healthy. I had excellent blood pressure, no diabetes, no heart problems, just the usual aches and pains that come with being 100+ lbs overweight. Now, at age 41, in one fell swoop, I am being tested for congestive heart failure and diabetes.

I have always had one foot that would swell after being vertical for too long, but recently, it has been happening in both feet, so much that I can't wear certain shoes. My legs also ache a bit. What prompted me to go to the doctor was having difficulty breathing and feeling fatigued. After looking up my symptoms, I went in to see my doctor.

After an EKG, chest x-ray, blood and urine tests, my doctor said I MIGHT be having CHF. I will be seeing a cardiologist tomorrow. I've started a diuretic to help my body get rid of the excess water.

I was able to see my urinalysis results--my glucose was 500. So let's add diabetes testing to the list too.

All of this could have been avoided had I only dropped the weight long ago. I should have known my good health in spite of my size was too good to be true.

The moral of the story: Get the weight off now, while you still can...

Jen, I am very sorry that you are going through these health issues. I went through something similar (albeit not as severe) that was my wake up call two years ago. You can do this, and we will be with you every step of the way.

Jen - I'm also sorry to hear about your health problems! One good thing is that he said it might be "CHF" which leaves the door open for "it's NOT CHF". There are a lot of things that could cause your symptoms and they're not all bad like CHF. I had the feet swelling (I felt like I was walking around on balloons all the time they were so swollen!) and the fatigue and it turned out that I just have Graves Disease. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you don't have the CHF.

Keep us updated!

Oof.. So true, and it just makes me so glad I'm doing what I'm doing. I've also been lucky, but I'm just not willing to continue to play the odds.

Keep going though! You've already lost a lot of weight; I've heard that with weightloss, sometimes these problems just fix themselves! You're in my thoughts, babe!

Sorry to hear of your health scare. I also had been diagnosed with hypertension, CHF and diabetes. With the wt. loss, everything is tremendously better. I'm now totally off the diuretics, My blood sugar has went from 600 to 100 and I now take 1/2 of a blood pressure pill daily instead of the 8 blood pressure pills I was taking. So, it can be done. My feet and hands used to swell horribly and now I have to buy "narrow" shoes and I can't keep my rings from falling off. I thank God everyday for restoring my health and prolonging my life. Before, I wasn't living, I was just waiting to die. It is certainly not to late, for you to become healthy once again. Hugs.

Hi gals--want to give you an update.

I saw the cardiologist yesterday. Mainly the visit was to talk and to do some basic examining. He told me my blood work did not show any problems--liver, kidney and thyroid functions are good. The only thing that may be questionable is my blood sugar. The blood was drawn about 2 hrs after I had breakfast and was 160. My urinalysis showed my glucose to be 500, which is alot of sugar into the urine.

So far the diuretics are working fairly well. I'll be seeing my primary doctor this Tuesday, and back to the cardiologist the following Tuesday for an EKG. I'm hoping I won't have to go through a stress test (they sound really scary!!).

So in summary, nothing has shown in the tests thus far. I'll just keep my appointments and take things a step at a time. The cardiologist did stress the importance of losing some weight to help my overall health. I've seen so much evidence right here on 3FC that it works, even just losing 10% will yield some results.

Thanks to you all for your support and concern.

I really appreciate this post. So many go for so long convincing themselves there are no real problems (focused on the vanity of it all) until its too late. Hopefully you have touched someone who wouldn't have realized otherwise.

I'm so glad that the bloodwork was okay. Are you going to have a fasting blood glucose test done? That's supposed to be a better indicator, I believe.

You can turn your health around, Jen. We know you can do it.

Hi Jen,

I am Jenaya and I don't know if we have met before. Your message resonated with me because I also have had some health scares related to weight. The beauty of all of this is it is not too late - you are already making some positive changes and you CAN do this. You are worth it....worth loving enough to make good and positive choices for your body. This group is so warm and encouraging and everyone is behind you. Take good care of you! The medical tests and consults are scary but they are reality of what the future will hold if we don't take care of ourselves now. You can reverse some of the health problems with your good choices. All the best to you!!

Jenaya

Thank Jenaya and everyone!

I had my blood drawn for my fasting glucose test and got another script for a diuretic. Next step is an ekg next week to see if anything is going on with my heart.

Thanks for all your concern!

Test Results:

Fasting Blood Glucose: 111 (just slightly out of the normal range)

Cholesterol: "Good" cholesterol is a little low, "Bad" is normal.

Course of action: return in 3 months for repeat bloodwork.

In the meanwhile....I will work my butt off to get all of my numbers into the normal range!

Wow, wow that is GREAT news. You must be so relieved!!!!

I don't wanna be preachy, just helpful, so I apologize if this comes out wrong - but it's so true what they say first G-d gives you a little nudge and then a not so little nudge and then a big old rap on the head to kinda wake you up. Me thinks you've just been given a little (not so little?) nudge, and now is the time to nip it in the bud, cause you don't want that big old rap on the head. But this is just great, great news. I'm so very happy for you. And you have opened up so many peoples eyes with telling your story. Good luck in working your butt off!!!! We are definitely here for you!!!!

Oh, Jen! :)

I've been worrying about this since the day you posted about it. I'm so relieved that things are much, much better than originally thought.

Now you can start kickin' butt without worrying quite as much, right?
