Support Groups - "Every-Day" 21-Day Challenge -- Countdown to success!!

Okay, everyone, as is the tradition, I start a new thread when I personally start a new challenge.

Below is a short explanation of how this challenge works so all you newcomers can take a look and decide if you're game or not! I hope you are! Hop aboard and enjoy the ride. We've got a great bunch of supportive people, so I hope you'll give us a try. A lot of people try for a while and then disappear.. I hope some of you will keep trying. There is NO shame in starting over. Remember, it's not over till you give up. And our motto around here is:

NEVER GIVE UP!!...Just start OVER!!


It works like this: you decide you'll do something for 21 days straight, every single day, so keep it doable. Then you count through 21.....and if you flub it, you MUST go back to zero and start over again. Everyone will be on different days. You can start anytime. At the beginning of the challenge you declare what level it is -- Level 1, 2, or 3. Level 1 means you feel it's a relatively easy challenge for you and means you only give yourself ONE pause day (see explanation of pause days below). Level 2 would give you two pause days and so on...
And taking NO pause days is what I'm going to call "aceing a challenge," as in "I'm aiming on aceing this one!" Yowzah!! :cb:

With a pause day you pause in your counting and continue the next day with the number you left off with. Pause days are NOT substitutes for days, i.e. Day 12 -- Day 13 -- Pause Day -- Day 14..... I suggest taking a pause day late in the game (better to go back to Day 1 early on) if you need a break or screw up when you're well into the challenge, meaning, when you're on Day 15 or something like that.

In any case, the trick is to keep going. The momentum builds and it's great incentive to stick to your guns, cause if you don't.........back to START you go. :( And the really great thing about this challenge is that you are forming new habits that will wipe out the old! AND, you get to do it with a great bunch of really supportive people to whom you are accountable! :grouphug:


In the interest of maintaining structure, a sense of solidarity and facilitating support I ask anyone who wishes to join this thread to please strive to follow the following guidelines while participating in this challenge and in posting.

1. Although this is a fabulous support group, the focus is to be on your CHALLENGE/S and/or other people's challenge/s AND weight loss, whether your challenge is about it or not. Please keep the challenge a priority, although we welcome chattiness! :lol: This means tell us what day you're on when you post and it's a good idea to make regular mention of just what your challenge is. This an action-based thread. Our members are ON a challenge, RESTARTING a challenge, or just in between and looking to start up again REAL SOON. ;) We also welcome posts from admirers, encouragers, and old friends!

2. Please refrain from posting food logs or recipes, except where you are really looking for help and advice on your eating. If journaling is your challenge, please keep the journaling off the thread and in a notebook or blog and just tell us if you've done what you set out to do. We have ALL types of dieters here, low-carb, high-carb, low-fat, high-fat, vegetarians, meat-lovers...please use simple mentions if you have something you want to share and then links and/or private messages to do so.

3. Please do NOT go into glowing accounts of any slipups, food indulgences or binges, what we here call "food porn." Simple mentions are fine, but use of smilies :censored: :tape: etc. as substitutes where possible is encouraged.

4. Please keep this a secular thread. Of course, passing references to your beliefs, a bit of introduction about your beliefs, brief faith-related words of encouragement are fine. :angel:

5. Please show support, support, support! This is key. :grouphug: You can waffle on about yourself but please, at least occasionally,come up and look around at others and what they are doing and MENTION it with words of encouragement and/or praise or sympathy. We understand "busy," poor computer connections, and bouts of self-pity and life problems where the focus turns to "me" and dealing with those problems, but these should be temporary, not a habit! ('cept in the computer case.)

In conclusion, let me say, the above are just that, GUIDELINES. Please realize that these guidelines have been added in an attempt to keep this a supportive and beneficial thread, at the LEAST, to those who need it MOST, those for whom weight loss is the hardest and, more often than not, the most crucial as well as for those who still, perhaps despite great success, know all too well that the road they walk will always be a slippery one. :^:

The guidelines are also meant to cultivate an atmosphere of consideration and concern for ALL, not individually, but AS A GROUP.

day 1 - Exercise 30 minutes a day - good - level 3
day 1 - No food within 2 hours of bedtime - good - level 3
day 1 - At least 4 servings of fruit/vegetable per day - good - level 1

Day 1 was a success. Managed to more than 4 servings of fruits and vegies yesterday. I think it helped me to eat less of the other stuff, which of course helps with my calorie total (even though I'm not counting).

Red - I'm so glad you're coming back to us! I hope that means things are getting more managable for you. Good luck with whatever challenges you set for yourself.

SweetPea - Take it easy on that ankle! Make sure you're letting it heal. Congrats on the weight loss though. That's great!

Apple - :bravo: on that water challenge! And great going with the beer! You're almost done with that too. :cp:

Jolly - Hey, you got day 1 under your belt, good job! You can do this!

Good morning all. First off, I have to report a non challenge, non weight loss, success to report. Yes, the human is trainable, because I finally got the timing right this morning, so puppy had no accidents :cb: :cb: It is good to know I can still learn.

Glad to see you Red. Can't wait to see what mega challenge is in store for you.

DJ - I need to tackle the fruits/vegetables thing again too. I think that will be the next layer of my challenge. First, following menu and decreasing the :censored: I can do this.

I must confess to taking a day off all the way around yesterday, but I'm back on the program today. So:

Calories <1500, day 4 with 1 pause taken
Candy <100 calories, day 4 with 1 pause taken
Walking - 8,000 steps, day 4 with 1 pause taken
Logged food, day 4 with 1 pause taken

Sweetpea - sorry to hear your ankle is not improving, but great news on the weight loss.

Red - glad to hear you're coming back - and with megachallenges even!

Jolly - Congrats on day 1 and the puppy success. My daughter has been fostering a dog lately from the humane society, and had a big crying jag recently when she couldn't get the dog to "go" outside for almost two weeks. The dog must have heard my daughter crying, because the dog's been "going" outside ever since.

DJ - glad you found some new challenges that appeal to you. Good luck.

I am happy to report that I've met my first mini-challenge weight of 190. I was one pound short of the mini-goal when I left for vacation, but had a temporary gain while visiting home. It was a real treat to see the scale hit 190 this morning. Next mini-goal is 179.

Hi all. Just combining doing my nails and posting to you all, to try and keep from binging. After months of eating pretty much whatever, whenever (and spending considerable amounts of time with my favorite men Ben and Jerry), it is hard to rein things back in. To top it all off, I am very broke, mainly due to poor spending choices on . . .. you guessed it, FOOD! I am not proud of the backsliding I have done, and I know I need to make changes. It is just difficult to do again. So, I am doing whatever I can to stay in the house, and not go out to buy bad crap. There is only so much damage I can do in house.

So, everyone, hope you are doing better than I am at the moment, but at least I am here, right? I will keep up the good fight.

Last note before bed. Day 2 both challenges met. I did eat after I did my nails. While portion sizes are definitely something I need to address and adjust, I made something healthy and didn't spend money. So that's something, anyway. Good night all!

No, honestly, I AM going to get this butt in gear again....all daylong I contemplated whether to do everything all at once or to split them all up....this was on top of deciding sometime around noon to NOT start at all... ;) but wait till tomorrow....(sigh).

But yes, I am going to start tomorrow. Monday here. Day 1 of whatever I decide in my slumbers.

dj -- Hello there! :wave: Thanks for sticking around and keeping things going. I'm glad to see you're back on new challenges as well. That should add some motivation to mine. I hear you on the hating calorie counting. It's something I just can't stand and believe I wind up paying way too much attention to what I eat and not enjoying the food at all. Did good yesterday, made all challenges. Today, will be my tough one though. Since I have to go back to work Monday morning, I have to make sure I get dinner on the table early today. During the week, my dh works swing shift, so I don't have to cook dinner at all if I so choose. Sunday of course, he's home and I do cook a nice dinner. To make him eat before 5pm is going to hard! I will do my best and see how it goes I guess.

Hey all. Day 3 challenges met, barely. I think I am coming down with something. I have no energy, I am tired all the time, and my taste buds are off. :p I need to get over this.

I finally figured out how to download my pictures from the camera to the computer. Unfortunately, I could not figure out how to get the picture small enough to use as my avatar :?: I have tried to attach two pictures. Hope it works.

hi all

i have no idea where i am with binge free and exercise so i will have to start over as i have lost track of my days. so far i am still binge free so for now i have 3 days under my belt but today isn't over so we'll see

Wow, I actually made it through a Sunday. Had to get a tire on my car fixed yesterday, so I took my car to a place at the mall and walked around and around until my car was done. That got my exercise in. For dinner, I didn't even say anything about eating early, I just made dinner and called them in when it was ready so I was able to eat well before bedtime. Now, I just need to make it a habit!

Hello all. Day 4 challenges met. I survived my first day back at work. Missed my pup lots! (can you imagine if I ever had a baby :o) Wasn't too bad being back at work - I even felt more energized than I did last week.

jolly. ah yes with the colouring i thought they would be springer spaniels - english or welsh? i had friends with spaniels and they were pretty hyper. she used to exercise them 2x a day

Ok, BIG news. I completed day 20 of no beer. So if I resist popping a cold one tonight, I will have completed the challenge. :carrot: Incredible! I will celebrate by moving my weight tracker!! I haven't been able to get back on south beach. There are just too many carbs around the house and we've also been out a lot. But I'm trying to keep cals low. I'm in a funny mind set. Every morning I start off thinking I'm back on SB until some temptation comes up and then it's OH NO and I don't eat much after that because I feel guilty. So thats how my cals are staying low and weight is actually coming off. I'm pretty excited.

Good (:?:) morning all. Well, I will have to take a pause for today on my menu challenge. I got called in to a 3rd shift last night with about 1 1/2 hours nap. I had some :censored: and caffeine to stay awake. I may have to pause on the exercise as well, as I don't think I am awake enough to safely do anything now, and will see if I have energy later. I won't have time to sleep until tonight.

Apple, way to go on your challenge. One last day - you are awesome and you can do it.

Sweet Pea, they are English. I really haven't found mine to be hyper (except as puppies). They are very smart, and quickly learn when it is time to play, play, and when it is time to snuggle, snuggle. Belle is my 4th Springer, and all of them have been that way. My first three all were used at work for therapy dogs too.

DJ – all that time at the mall and you spent it walking instead of stopping at the food court! That is terrific!

Jolly – your dogs are beautiful. Springer Spaniels are such great pets. What kind of training is required for a therapy dog?

Apple – congratulations on success with your beer challenge. I look forward to the day I make it to the 21st day of anything! Something always seems to come up when I get close to the end that causes me to totally blow it. You're success is an inspiration! Your modification to SB seems to be working great for you.

Red – hope things are going well with you.

I hope everyone living in the USA gets out to vote today. It is supposed to be pouring rain here all day with flooding expected at high tide, so standing in line outside waiting to get into the school polling location ought to be a lot of fun. I had to wait about 1/2 hour the last time I voted.

Hey all. Very, very quick post. Hope all had a good day. I do have to take a pause day on my exercise goal. I just didn't have it in me. I made it through the day though. Even spent time with my horse. I have been a horrid horsie mommy lately, and I had decided to just give him a treat and leave. He was so thrilled to see me, though, that I found a last bit of energy somewhere, and had a nice ride.

Heh, people, I kind of tripped and stumbled on my challenge start.....ugh. I was doing great on the second day yesterday, but...I'll have to start over. Actually, I haven't even told you all what I was doing... :^: Oh well, I'll try to get in here soon. Too much going on as usual! :dizzy:

Shad!!! Part of all the mess yesterday was because of the Melbourne Cup!! God, the phone started ringing off the hook with all these Aussie radio stations and reporters wanting comments on the reaction in Japan. To be honest, I hadn't been clued in at all...had way too much to do, nothing racing I had to scramble for info and, yeah, wow, it's amazing. I know the trainer and he's a very clever guy and a sweet one too. Always nice when someone like that wins and he sure has been winning abroad, U.S., Dubai, Oz. Then for next deadline, they wanted to change the page 1 lead and I had to do the work because I insisted on having the race on page 1 and the sports guys were off somewhere and then I noticed their ridiculous coverage (lack thereof) and had to get on the guy's case and....I mean!!! how huge is 1-2 in the Melbourne!!!?!?! :eek: oh was a very long night.. full moon, Mercury retro....bring on the loonies..but it was a kind of topsy-turvy Down Under!!! kind of day, eh?!

I have to restart my challenges tomorrow. Last night, for the first time since I brought her home, Belle decided to spend the whole night crying. After only having 1 1/2 hours sleep in the previous 48, I was not doing so good. I ate badly and didn't work out :( Unfortunately, things aren't looking real good for tonight, as I have a pending work situation.

Good morning all. Well, looks like challenges will have to restart TOMORROW, as I am not in much better shape today. Causes of sleeplessness last night were one each - work, pup, and acid reflux. YIKES. I am just too tired to work out, again. I just don't know what to do.

Yes, Sweet Pea, this is the 4th dog I have had as an adult. I do know how to train her, I just wasn't expected the first night of crying to be 1 1/2 weeks AFTER I brought her home. Last night, she only cried once when I put her to bed, and once in the middle of the night. Much better.

Hello all! I finished the no beer challenge!! Hooray!!! Red, I have no idea how I did it...I am already back to my beer swilling ways. The 2 weeks of south beach were really good for me too, and I can't seem to get back on that one. Monday...there's always Monday...I do need to start up a new challenge though, and it will be exercise. 30 min a day.(Level 2) I have been really slacking off in that department. :shrug: These last 2 weeks have been crazy. Next week should be kind of sort of normal so maybe I can get back on a roll. I'd love to get to 149 by Thanksgiving....

Hey all. I plan to restart today. I will do it, yes I will! Things are so crazy with work though. I meant to get back to TOPS last night, and things ran late do to a client issue. It never ends. Ah well.

Yep, had 1 pause yesterday. We had a bit of teenage drama in my house which threw off my evening schedule, so, I ate about an hour late! I kept it small and healthy, but still had to go to bed an hour later. Oh well, I've been doing good up till now.

Jolly - hope you can get that restart off the ground. I know how hard it can be when you're so busy. Good luck!

Red - I'm glad you have not forgotten us! It sounds like you're doing ok even without having the actual challenge. That's ok! It's hard when you have so many other priorities to work on!

Apple - Congrats on the beer challenge! That's great! Now, you did it once, you can do it again. Celebrate with a day by having a couple then get back to it! You can do it!

Restart. Restart. Yeah. We will see when that can happen. I am sorry guys. I need to go back and figure out how I got going last year, and take those same baby steps again. I think for now I will start with two easy ones.

1. Follow my menu and log daily.

2. Exercise daily.

Keep it simple stupid! Let's see how that goes. Wish me luck.

Hello. I went for a walk with the family yesterday, but there was no sweat or heavy breathing involved so I think I'll restart. I really wish my joggong stroller would arrive. I'm beginning to loose patience.....
I know I need to get back on the no beer. I plan on officially starting on Monday, but I just might be able to start today....
Jolly, the hardest part is getting started. I did really well for a couple of weeks and now I'm havig a hard time RE-starting. Something will click eventually. You can do it! I really want a bit more weight gone by Thanksgiving, so I'm trying to focus on that. There's not much time either. Gulp!

Had a good day yesterday. Didn't get a lot of vegies in, but got lots of fruit. Enough to meet, or actually exceed my challenge, so I'm happy.

Yes Jolly, we wish you all the luck! Sometimes, going back to those beginning baby steps can make a huge difference. I've done that a few times myself.

Hi people. I am shamed by jolly's efforts to get restarted and have decided to take her cue and start small. Much as I had planned to strike off on a mega challenge, I realize the difficulty of doing so at this time. Yes, I have been good in general. My weight is still down (after a bit of a gain there) but I want to push it down to another 8 lbs by the end of the year if possible. That would put me at 65 kgs, a weight I have not seen in years and years.

Still, challenge-wise I am going to keep it simple...just the crunches for now.

So, as soon as I get down on the floor and do 'em count this as Day 1! Up and at 'em!!!! :dancer:


dj -- Good to see you doing so well. Your pause the other day was barely one. You kept to good food and little of it. Good for you!!!

Apple -- I had to reread your last post because the sweat and heavy breathing threw me there for a moment....ah...wishful thinking....oh, right! you were talking about walking! ;) Well, I hope you get off on another beer challenge. Yes, I know Thanksgiving and all that is coming up, but it's only ONE day! ;)

jolly -- You CAN do this!!! Good for you for keeping trying! :cp:

I had to go out of town unexpectedly on a business trip for the past few days, so was out of touch. For some reason, I feel compelled to eat and exercise poorly when I travel - probably a combination of habit, boredom and stress. So, I'm going to join the restart club.

Anyway, the new level 3 goals are:
Calories 1500-1700
Candy <100 calories per day
Fruit/vegetables - 4 or more servings per day

Not exactly a 21-day goal, but I'm committed to using no pause days until Thanksgiving.

I like Jolly, JD, Red's plans for keeping it simple, so I'm going to focus on the food intake and let the exercise go for now. With the time change and work schedule, time for walking has become a challenge. I'm hoping to be able to get back to the gym within the next month or two, but in the meantime will just walk whenever possible and not stress over it.

Everyone - stay strong this week. I know we can do it, just got to stay on the plan!

Hey all. Thanks for the well wishes. My biggest thing right now is stress. i have always been one to medicate my stress with large quantities of food - this is why I am the size I am. I have made progress, but that tendency is still there. Stress triggers eating for me. So, since stress is a fact of life, particularly with my line of work, I have to figure out how to get through the toughest times. I have to figure out some middle ground between eat all and not care, and beat myself up because I am feeling the urges. Does that make any sense?

Anyway, good luck to all of you too. And Apple, I too got distracted by your sweaty heavy breathing :rofl:

Day 1 done and went well. Actually got in 6 miles of walking today, even though I gave up on the walking goal!

Jolly - I can really relate to the stress eating, and alternating between being out of control and then beating yourself up for the behavior. Do you know which days will be the really bad days? If so, can you plan for them somehow? Bring extra healthy food for those days or plan for extra excercise to work out some of the stress?

DJ - you're doing really well. The count of the days is going up rapidly.

Red, Apple - hope you had a good weekend.

Newbie here. Just signed up today. I posted a similar message somewhere out there but after reading this thread thought I should try again. Forums, threads,chats and cute little icons etc are new to me. I'll figure it out soon enough I suppose , just let me know if I step on any toes.

My21 day challenge/goal is:
improving current 45min mile to 20 minute mile by end of challenge by walking each day with intention.

Yep, had a pause on the exercise yesterday. I actually never quit moving all day, but none of that moving got me out of breath or sweating, so I must call it a pause.

Jolly - Yes, you're making sense. At least to all of us who fight the same issues! Stress is one of my biggest triggers too and it's one of the hardest to deal with since it's so hard to control. I just try to find other ways to cope, usually through exercise for me. Hopefully you can find a way to cope that works for you. Good luck!

I KNOW what I need to do. I just can't seem to do it. I was too lazy to make dinner and so we had *food porn* instead. And beer. And today we decided to go down to my in-laws for thanksgiving, so it's no longer just ONE day, it's three. My best hope is to just get on a roll before then. So tomorrow, I MUST BE GOOD. I will not wimp out. On a positive note, I completed day 2 of exercise.

Welcome Skinnydip. I like your goal of improving your walking speed. You'll find lots of support here. It really helps me to stay on target if I have to get on here and log it every day. I must be more competitive than I used to be, because I now think Challenges are great!

Yes, stress is so difficult to deal with. I understand that concept of using exercise as a stress-buster, but it honestly never enters my mind when I'm stressed. It's hard to change from one reflexive action to another, but I know it needs to happen 'cause the stress certainly isn't going to disappear.

Wouldn't it be great if we were wired so "food porn" consisted of overindulging in carrots and apples???

I've been thinking more about this Thanksgiving is just one day thing and even though I'll be going away, I will try to stick to this thing. I am starting no beer and low cal today, but I'll be more lenient and allow 3 pause days. I'll drink wine on thanksgiving! :cheers: The exercise part might turn out to be difficult too, but I think I can I think I can I think I can.....
Low cal will be 1200-1500 a day, I'll be trying to do SB phase 1, but I won't be beating myself up if I decide to eat carbs, or fruit especially, as long as the calories stay with-in the goal range. UGGHH. Here we go.

Good morning all! Wednesday here in Tokyo. I just got down and did the crunches as evenings...I don't know when I'll be home or in any condition to be crunching. ;) So, that's Day 3 in the bag!! Hurrah! :spin:

And!!!! I have gotten back down to a low of 68.2 kg. I thought it was a new low but then I realized that it wasn't. I had hit 68 last month but then my weight went up again...oh, how did it ever do that!?!? :dunno: But, I'm getting it back down again. Oh, I'm glad. I am not eating much, I am too busy and do get some exercise so I was wondering when I could see the scale budge again and there it was this morning...OK, steady now....don't have to put it back on...I am actually starting to look forward to feeling good in clothes and, big be able to tuck in my shirts... :cloud9: but that is still a ways off, I think. I am short and very short-waisted, but built like a Quarterhorse in the hindquarters... ;) and so it's hard to look good when the line is cut at the waist....sigh....maybe some day.

Wow, long hiatus for me. I've been so busy with school this semester it's crazy! But I'm getting back on track...starting now! Another one notched. Don't know why, but the exercise yesterday was so hard! I literally had to force it to happen. All I wanted to do was to just sit down and relax. So far so good. I filled my nalgene bottle with water and LOTS of ice this morning (I can only drink icy cold water), so I'm set for the school day. I just have to watch out when I go home because my mom just bought Code Red Mt. Dew and Root Beer. :( I hate it when she does that...she buys all this junk food, and here I am trying to lose weight. She just says "well, don't eat it then." Ugh! I can't wait until I move out so I can do my own shopping and only get the things I should be will be so much easier!

djstorey - I know what you mean about the exercise. I didn't have class yesterday, so it was a prime opportunity to get a good workout in...but did I do it? No. I sat on my butt all day. The relaxing part was nice, but I felt so lazy by the end of the day! :(

Had a small pause on the calories today. Kept it under 2000, but did still exceed the goal, so I'm taking a pause on it. Today is my birthday, so I'm using that as an excuse.:balloons: It's probably the first birthday in 10 years where my calorie count has been under 3,000, so I'm still counting it as a pretty successful day.

Red - congratulations on getting back down to 68.2 kg. :goodscale: I have to confess to needing to use a kilogram to pound conversion to comprehend the metric system. It's such a great feeling when that scale stops a little lower than the last weighing. I've noticed that European clothes are cut much tighter than clothes in the USA. What is the cut like in Tokyo?

LaBonita - welcome back. Pop reduction is a great goal. Amazing how many empty calories it can add.

DJ - you're really knocking off those days. It is tough to get in the exercise when you're tired. Glad to see you pushed through and got it done.

Apple - to the gym 4 days in a row is awesome. Great job with the goals.

Hey all. Coming on more to complain than anything else. I am still having a series of absolutely horrid days. I can't get to the gym (my day started at 6am when I got called in to work 'cuz someone was sick), and it is still going as I wait for a call to update me on how the client who fell into the basement is! I am eating, and eating, and eating, and absolutely hating my life.

Sorry for being Negative Nelly here. I know I need to find some way out of it, I just don't know how.

Ok. I did get a walk in the other day, but yesterday was a pause day.:( So I'm on day 5 for exercise. Day 2 no beer and I think day 4 for cals. Sounds about right. I'm worried about the exercise. I have a week-end with out my husband which makes it difficult. I have to do the video thing. I HAVE TO...Red! You are totally awesome!!! I am hoping to hit 149 by Tuesday. I was high 150 today. You will be my inspiration! I'll re-read your post tonight to keep myself from melting into the couch.

Good morning, all. Making a little time here to come in and post. Thank you for all the congratulatory messages. I hope I can continue in this way, getting the weight off. i haven't seen this light in a long time. I have lost a LOT of muscle but then I suppose that is inevitable and probably even desirable at this point because I haven't been working out very often or with heavy weights. I HAVE lost fat as well though and am not sitting around not exercising at all, so I think in the long run I can get the body I want, lean and strong and flexible.

On the other hand, things are so hard with work. There is so much stress and worries and that is a huge part of why I am losing weight. It's not all good but it's not all bad either. I don't feel like eating, partly because I'm feeling so down, partly because I'm occupied with other things, both mentally and physically (just don't have time to eat). Then again, to give credit where it's due, I am also forcing myself to get to the gym and to eat good food when I eat and NOT eat junk food except a I guess that counts, eh? :dizzy:

Anyhow, just wanted to talk. Things are very lonely when you're a manager, it seems..... :(

Well, I just knocked out the crunches, so that's Day 4 DONE!! :dancer:

It's bringing new anxieties though, like realizing I have no where to turn my attention and realizing I have to find work. You know, in many ways it's so comforting to have some "problem" hanging over your head, some excuse. Now it's starting to go away and it's kind of scary. Japanese tend to be miniature, built like 10-year-olds, and though I am short, my bones are not like a sparrow's and I don't think I'll ever be able to wear things here. I get my clothes mail-order and it's not easy. Basically, I wore the same thing all the time. Now, with work changing I have to have more clothes and I'm trying to find them. Actually, I was just looking at a German site. I like the European fashions better than the States. I used to live in Germany and I think it's just more me. But I have yet to buy anything, because yes, things are much more cut to show the figure and I haven't had one to show, still don't..... but I'm working on it. :^:

jolly -- How are you doing? Are you days going any better? You poor thing, you're trying so hard. Just keep moving. You'll get out of this dark tunnel. Blue skies wait on the other end! Don't lose heart! I am rooting for you! :hug:

So, I am asking for help. I want to start 2-3 challenges. They need to be good solid steps in the right direction, without expecting "perfection." Any ideas?

Red – You are doing so well, especially given all the hours you’re working. It can be very difficult to stay on target for your goals when you’re so busy. I’m in management at my company, and it really can be lonely. You can’t be overly friendly or others will perceive it as favoritism. Wow – purchasing clothes via mail order can be tough. I’ve tried ordering a few things over the past few years, and have returned everything. The clothes either look different in person than they did when ordered, or the fit is off.

Apple – I just noticed that you live in Sacramento. I’ve heard that the city is beautiful. Do you walk just in your neighborhood or do you explore the city?

DJ – I added the 4 servings of fruit/vege goal after reading your challenges. I used to think I was getting lots of servings per day, but now realize that it really varies. While I eat a lot of them some days, other days I have to eat a salad before bed just to get in 4 servings. Are you finding the same thing?

Jolly – “She told me I need to stop giving myself permission to overeat. She's right.” Doesn’t that say it for all of us? I think I should have that stitched, framed and hung beside the kitchen door and at work. 2-3 challenges without “perfection”? How about spreading them over the three areas we all need to work on – food, exercise and water. Can you set 1 achievable goal in each category? And then factor in the non-perfection component by making them level 3.

Miss Fallon – welcome to the 21-day challenge. You have some tough challenges. Good luck as you start tomorrow.

Well, I'm getting there! I'm hoping to do good over the weekend. Monday will be my busiest day (besides Thanksgiving) and don't know how I'll be able to meet all my challenges! I'm not giving in yet, just starting to think of some plan that might work.

Apple - There are really only 2 ways I manage to get my exercise in, either I take my 2 1/2 year old for a walk down to the park or I exercise during his nap. If neither one happens, well, that's usually a pause day. If I exercise during his nap, I use video tapes. I actually like them. My favorite is stepping, but I also like regular aerobics and I do combo tapes that do both strength and aerobics at once. You just have to find some that you find enjoyable. Good luck!

Red - Yes, being in management can be very lonely. I've been there too. However, take some pride in the fact that you've worked your way into that kind of position! You really are doing good, even with all the stress you're under! That's great that you get to the gym and try to eat right. That in itself is quite an accomplishment!

Jolly - I agree with Ashley, try to spread things out and take small steps. Maybe you could try limiting, not eliminating, some of your worst food choices. You could try what Ashley and I are doing by upping your fruit and vegies. Whenever I get stuck on picking a challenge, I try to notice what my weakest areas are and try to improve them. You could also try reading past posts to see what others challenges were and incorporate them. Good luck with whatever you decide! You can do this!

Ashley - Looks like you're doing good. Yes, I do have some days that I have to push vegies or fruit near the end of my day. However, I'm trying really hard to not get into that position.
On most days of the week, I eat cereal with fruit for breakfast. I always use 2 servings of fruit with a small amount of high protien cereal. THat way I'm half done first thing in the morning. If I don't have that particular breakfast, then I have a hard time.
Yesterday I had a different breakfast and did have to make up for it at dinner, but I knew I was having a dinner with lots of vegies in it so that was ok.

Too often in the past, I thought I could do them later and then something came up (like a very late night out) and there was no way I was going to get to them (or I totally forgot.)

Working in the middle is just not for me, I friends, even more bosses! As for mail order, it is difficult, but once you find a place that is reliable with fit and quality it isn't so bad. I have found Land's End and Orvis to be good. Of course, I am just buying classic things, nothing fashionable...

dj -- Thanks for your kind words. I am so down these things at work are so undefined and I feel I have no one to turn to for advice. Higher management seems to have plans for things that will directly affect me and the people I'm supposed to be managing and yet I am not consulted. It's a horrible place really. Yesterday, the riding club had a celebration party for the owner, who won tops in two categories for Japan (dressage). It was nice feeling like I belonged somewhere (even though I don't compete) and being around people who are tops in their fields is the kind of thing I've been missing. When I was writing and reporting it was a common occurrence, but now my world has been reduced to the problems of the office...sigh. Well, I can just carry on and perhaps get out of the ridiculous excuse for a company I work at... :dunno: You, are doing great on your challenges and I really hope you can handle things over the weekend. Day 7 exercise, day 4 no beer, day 6 cals. I went over 1500 cals yesterday, I thought I would balance it out with a low day today. If I can't do that, I'll take a pause.
DJ, ever since my stroller fell apart I haven't been walking/jogging at all. That's my preferred way to get it in too. (my new one is finally due to arrive tomorrow!) Plus I've had really busy days lately where I couldn't anyhow. Or I would have to choose the gym or the walk, no time for both.
I have a video I like but it's really hard to get motivated to do it. Once the kids are asleep I'm pretty much a vegetable. I guess I just have to want it more! My son doesn't nap either. Only in the stroller or in the car.
Ashley, I have lived in Sacramento for 6 years or so. Not a native. I wouldn't call it a beautiful city either, although it has some really nice neighborhoods. My town is actually 20 minutes from down town. I live in a historic neighborhood with beautiful old homes from the late 1800's. Yes, I walk around the neighborhood lots! The best thing about Sac is that its an hour and a half from San Fransisco, which IS the MOST beautiful city in America, except maybe Seattle. And an hour and a half in the other direction and you're in the mountains and Lake Tahoe just beyond. Also beautiful. So it's a nice location. A tad hot in the summer, a tad rainy in the winter.
Red, I hope your work situation improves. If you're unhappy at work it really effects the rest of your life. My husband went through a bad work situation and he was miserable to be around.

I had a great weekend! Belks had a big sale, so I bought some new clothes that actually fit. My old size 18s and some of the 16s had gotten to the point where they were really hanging on me. My dress pants were safety pinned all around the waist to keep them from falling off. So, I bought two pairs of dress pants, three light-weight sweaters, and new underwear. All in smaller sizes. I bought size 14 pants for the first time in at least 10 years. Then, I packaged up all the too-big clothes in my closet and took them to Goodwill. That will stop me from gaining back into them again. Next target is to no longer fit into any of the remaining size 16s.

Red and Apple - happy to see you're both on target over the weekend.

Big week coming up. I intend to take Thanksgiving as a pause day, but let that be the only day this week that is paused. I also intend to make it a moderate pause, meaning I will not take it as permission to binge all day. What will everyone else do to deal with all the food?

Red - do you celebrate Thanksgiving or something similar over in Tokyo?

Apple - I actually kind on envy you for living where you do. I'm not crazy about Sacramento, but I am from Californina and miss it something terrible! I used to live in the foothills a couple hours from Sacramento and still think of it as home.

I'm so angry with myself! I have this challenge going on over at my blog, and you'd think that would give me lots of motivation. But I haven't been eating good, and I haven't exercised. I know it's because i'm stressed about school (6 classes...will never do that again), but I just hate it. I want to lose this weight, and no matter how much I plan, I always fail! :( By the time I get home from school, it's 6:30, and I have homework to do and that takes me all I end up not exercising and eating so many snacks to help ease the stress.

Sorry to be negative. To top it off, I've had pop pretty much every day this week. I really need a kick in the butt! :shrug:

I'm back and trying to figure out exactly where I am on my challenges. It seems that I finished the 4 servings of vegies yesterday. I did have 1 pause the other day but that was it. Exercise was a bust, however, I'm ok with that. This had been one crazy week with appointment after appointment and Thanksgiving on top of it all. I'm definitely starting that one over again. The no food 2 hours before bed, I'm still working on with today being the last day. I did take 1 pause on it on Thanksgiving day.

exercise - start over

no food within 2 hours of bedtime:
day 19, good, 2 pauses left
day 20, pause, 1 pause left
day 20 - good - 1 pause left

day 20 & 21 - At least 4 servings of fruit/vegetable per day FINISHED with 1 pause used!

LaBonita - Sorry to hear you're having a rough time of it. School can be so very stressful. I remember very well the stress of school!

When you're stressed, it can feel almost impossible to make big changes and will just add to your stress. Maybe you can pick 1 or 2 areas that you can work on like reducing the pop, or turning a couple of those non-healthy snacks into something healthier. Little steps like those (or whatever you choose) can help you feel much better about yourself and can make a huge difference in the long run.

We wish you luck and hope that things will get better for you!

Hey everyone. I like the idea of the challenges.It's just long enough to get you started on a new habbit yet short enough not to feel overwhelmed. All your posts are inspiring to me and I wanted to start a challenenge. I'm not sure about the whole pause thing, maybe red can explain it better for me. My challenege will be to remember to take a multi vitamin everyday (that counts right?). That and to drink more water, at least 64oz. Wish me luck, I'll need it.

I hope everyone had a nice holiday. I ended up taking two pause days instead of the one I had planned, but I'm back on track today. Everybody left the house around noon to return to their own homes. Before they left, we cleaned out the fridge and threw away all the left-overs that nobody wanted to take home into the trash. It was pretty hard to toss the pumpkin pie, but I wanted everything out of here.

Red - you've been knocking off the days. What a coincidence that Thanksgiving here was Labor day there.

DJ - Great job on the challenges! You're almost done and still have pause days left over.

LaBonita - it can be very difficult to stay motivated when the rest of your life is so stressful. DJ has some good ideas with small challenges. Or maybe you can modify your goal to maintain your current weight until this semester is over, then look at dropping some pounds after some of your stress is reduced.

Bbybear712 - hello and welcome to the challenge thread. In case you didn't start back that far, Red explains the general rules on the very first page in this thread. More water and taking a multi-vitamin are good challenges to start with.

Ok, finished my other challenge of not eating 2 hours before bed. Now, I will start new challenges.

Some sort of purposeful exercise everyday - level 3
No food 2 hours before bedtime - level 3
At least 4 servings of fruits/vegies per day - level 1

I'm changing the exercise challenge from my normal 30 minutes a day to just some sort of exercise everyday because sometimes on the weekends I have a really hard time fitting in a good workout. During the week I usually put in closer to an hour, but weekends with kids and husband around, it can be tough. This way, on the weekends I can do something simple like crunches if need be to meet my challenge.

On Dec 19th, I'm off to Australia - which gives me exactly 3 weeks to get a whole lot of stuff done and thus... that's my new challenge - to get it all done, and to remember to be nice to myself from time to time. It's way too complicated and too much stuff to list here and not very exercise/weight loss relates (rather schoo/life stuff), so I won't be typing it all out here, but probably will in my blog.

Btw, I noticed that I'm the only one who still has the "number of 21-day challenges completed" siggie... :o (not that it's up to date)

Today, I ate three meals, had two snacks, hosted a group of friends to dinner at my house tonight, and still managed to stay at 1600 calories! I've decided the secret to losing weight is less candy and more carrots. Not that it's a secret. Just something I've struggled to remember for years.

I returned to the gym today for the first time in two months. My shoulder has finally improved enough that I could do the eliptical for 20 minutes and then did some very light weights. I'm going to try a low-level aerobics class on Saturday morning to see if I can tolerate that much jarring motion yet. I'm so looking forward to getting back to the level of cardio I was at before surgery.

Bear - good going on your goals. I find level 1 to be much harder than level 3, because there is only 1 pause day allowed. I don't think I'd ever get to 21 with only 1 pause day, and really admire those that can make it.

Red - you must lead an exciting life with the events you cover. I'm really envious. Seems like my job is challenging, but at the same time it's sitting at the conference table or desk for long stretches day in and day out.

DJ - brrrrr. Isn't it amazing how kids can manage to leave their jackets everywhere they go? My kids spent most of their grade school years in Florida, where it warms up significantly as the day goes along. There must be a huge pile of their jackets still lingering somewhere around Tampa.

Still cold here, but we did manage to get all the shoveling done. Shoveling snow at least is a good calorie burner!

Ashley - Yes, kids leave jackets everywhere. Every year we end up going through the lost and found at school at least a couple of times! It's amazing to me though, because it doesn't warm up here much during the day. Yesterday we had a high of 14 and they still leave their jackets laying around.

Ashley -- Good for you on another day notched! :cp: How do you keep your calories down so low?! I don't think I could. Then again, I don't know if I do. I really must start counting....I think I have only lost muscle and not fat and have been gaining again, gaining fat again. The clothes are not as loose as they were....I don't dare weigh myself...ah, it's not something you can just ignore ever, it is? I think this is the hardest part, having to be constantly vigilant. Nah, my life's not exciting. The racing is about the only thing I still do as far as reporting goes. The rest is in the office trying to manage near chaos. :^: Nothing exciting there, just exhausting and frustrating as all get out! :shrug:

dj -- Shoveling snow! Wow! Difficult to imagine. No snow here. It's rare that Tokyo gets it and then only maybe in January or February. Good going on your challenges! :bravo:

Did the company Christmas party last night, and mostly managed to stay away from the food table. I had a light calorie day prior to the party and drank a lot of water before I went. Weighed this morning and find I'm up a pound for the week :mad: Yes, I know it varies, but still I don't like it!

Red - you're in the home stretch now. Hang in there for six more days! keeping the calories down is always a challenge for me. I'm a sweet-aholic, so staying away from the candy and ice cream is critical. If I can break the cycle and stay away from a couple of weeks, it gets much easier. Seems like the minute I stop counting, the calories shoot way up and so does the weight.

DJ - I don't envy your snow shoveling at all. I grew up in an area with snow and ice, and very cold. Don't miss the weather at all.

Jolly - nice to hear from you again. Keep working!

Almost didn't make it on the vegies yesterday, pulled it off with a last minute save for dinner.

Today I should get plenty of exercise in, we're off the the mountains to find a Christmas tree :tree:. That usually involves lots of hiking around since I'm so picky. My husband tends to pick out about 20 trees before I agree on one. Drives him crazy :lol:!

Ashley - Good job on the company party. Those can be so hard! Don't worry about that pound, like you said, weight varies. My weight can vary as much as 5 lb around TOM and a pound or 2 at other times.

Red - Hey, you're almost done! Good going. :carrot:
Personally, I think you're lucky you don't get much snow! Shoveling snow here where I live tends to start in November and won't end until maybe April. We've even had storms dump a few inches into May and people talk about the year we had snow on the 4th of July!

I really don't need it especially now, since it would mean I couldn't ride. I grew up in Pittsburgh and back then we would get lots of snow...of course, nothing like Idaho, I guess. That's amazing that you had snow in July?! :eek: Bizarre!

Ashley -- You're amazing, sticking to that calorie count. The minute I start thinking about NOT overeating, the easier it is for me to do just that! :shrug: Great going with the party. It's the season here as well, not Christmas, but yearend parties, they're called "Forget the Year" parties. Good idea drinking all the water before the party. I wonder if that would help for me? Well, it's only four more days on my crunches left! Yippee! I am a sugarholic too and thus have done many no sugar challenges. Recently though, I just haven't felt up to the challenge.. :^: but really should get back on it. It is sooo easy to pack in the calories when you're eating sweets. Continued good luck! :goodluck:

Yes, we found our tree yesterday and got lots of exercise in while doing it. I can really tell that all the exercise I do now has made a difference. I hiked all over, up and down hills in knee deep snow and it never bothered me. The tree we ended up liking the best was actually a couple hundred yards up a hill that was very steep. My husband wouldn't even go up there to get it. My 2 teens and I climbed up there and cut it down and had to roll it down the hill to where my husband was waiting. Kinda crazy, but it was fun!

Gotta run, it's my husbands birthday today and I promised him a hot breakfast. Have a great day! :wave:

DJ - Amazing what a difference some exercise and the loss of 89 pounds can do for your stamina, isn't it? Just think, you would probably have missed that opportunity with your kids if you weren't working so hard to get in shape. Good for you.

Red - I can't just say no sweets. Just the thought makes me break out in a sweat :crazy: The best I can do is cut way back. I used be able to eat one of those family size packages of candy by myself in one day. Hard to even imagine that now.

Ashley - Yep, I know about those jeans! I've noticed that all the "in" places to shop only carry the low cut ones. I have found the waist high ones, but mainly only online. Kind of have to search around.

Good morning all. I had to restart my challenges yesterday. Friday there was a bad snow storm, and the gym closed. Saturday I was feeling ill, and did not get to the gym. I was back yesterday, and back to the killer circuit class this morning.

I have been so exhausted lately - I have energy for nothing. It is really bad. My friend thinks it is due to the poor eating and sporadic exercise I have done lately. I am working on that, but if nothing improves soon, I am going to get it checked out. I hate feeling like this!

Ashley - The one that I know for sure that gives you a choice with jeans is JC Penny. I usually shop online with them because they have more choices for tall sizes which I need for my long legs! When you go on their site, they give you a choice for; at waist, just below waist and low cut. Make sure you do a search online first though for a coupon code. They often have free shipping codes out there. Can definitely save some money that way! Good luck!

Jolly - Make sure you get yourself checked out if you don't get to feeling better soon. It could be something like what your friend said or even something like your thyroid. Take care of yourself!

Today was a challenging day. I was incredibly tempted to eat mountains of everything, and there was lots of Christmas junk around the office. Funny how I can go days with little temptation, then hit a day where I practically have to gnaw at my knuckles to keep from shoving cake into my mouth.

Hey all. I'm feeling pretty down. Wondering what I should do for my next challenge...wondering how I'll ever lose weight...if it'll matter. :( (Sigh) I really need a boost-me-upper. All I can think of is food.... :^: Oh, well, I did get to the gym after riding today. But I ate to compensate...well, anyone got any ideas? I just have to get more weight off. What do I do for motivation...blah, blah, blah, don't mind me people..... :kickcan:

hmmmm i thought you were 72kg last time i was around so maybe you have already lost some weight?

my suggestion is to write down all the reasons you want to lose weight/make lifestyle changes and really focus on them and make them big and important. if the reasons aren't important enough then there won't be any change in your behaviour

the other things i would suggest
- make a list of things you enjoy and make sure you do something from that list most days
- think of other things you can do to nurture yourself without food
- maybe try visualisation and other things to lift your self confidence and feel better about yourself???

no exercise
but i did stick to only 1 serving of refined sugar, so day 1 completed for that challenge :)

Yes, you were away a long time and during that time I did manage to get my weight down. I'd gotten down to just under 68 kg and then went through an eating phase that put me back up another 5 lbs again. Now, I've gotten a bit of that off again.
I won't go into details but work is **** and I have no time for myself anymore, very little. I am trying to make the most of that time but really, it's tough. I need down time and yet I'm using the little free time I have to exercise and get out to see my horse. So, I'm pretty frazzled, exhausted and becoming depressed from the overwork, and moreso the fact that the work involves making a lot of people unhappy (managing resisters to change). Anyhow, enough of that...I don't want to talk about work (my entire life practically now).
I liked the part you said about reasons for losing weight etc. and "make them big and important." I have the ability to say absolutely nothing is really ever that important and this is a huge help in not letting things get to me. However, it's in areas such as these where, yeah, it certainly doesn't seem so important to lose more weight where it works against me. Yes, I would love to not have to hide the roll of fat around my middle. Yes, I would love to be able to tuck in my shirts etc etc. At my height, I have to eat like a bird in order not to gain weight. This is the hardest thing for me. I have never been a bird! But, yeah, making those reasons important is a challenge. I guess it's about saying my crazy little dreams are truly important instead of saying I should be happy to be healthy etc. etc. I will ponder this.... :^:

Well, people, I was over perusing the Featherweights forum...god, that name is just NOT right for me! :stress: but it did give me the motivation and disgust at my own complacency to get up and cracking again! :strong: I will be committing to a new challenge today, maybe a couple of them, and I have changed my goal weight to 55 kg (120 lbs) and made a weight tracker. Enough of the moaning. I have thoroughly disgusted myself with it! :mad:

Red – congratulations on finishing your challenge. It really is tough to hang onto the motivation. I think everyone on this site can relate to that struggle. We’re always here to talk it through with you. It sounds like you’re working through it – by reading the featherweights postings! That made me laugh when I read your last post.

DJ – seems like you’re on the run lately. Good job with your challenges.

I'm starting some new challenges. With Christmas coming up, I don’t think there’s any point in even attempting anything too stringent. So, with that in mind, I’m going to do some sort of exercise 30 minutes per day and keep the calories under 2,000; both level 3.

red - i'm glad you're feeling motivated again. truly getting the right reasons that you feel passionate about are the only way to lose weight. if you are doing it because you think you "should" or because you feel bad about your body image then it's hard to make progress

funnily i teach a course in emotional eating ;) so i'm up with all the tricks. i used to be a shocking emotional eater. it was all about instant gratification and self medicating with food. now i am much much better but i still have the impulses sometimes and have to fight them.

when i am feeling balanced then i feel in control of my eating and i am not tempted. but when i am stressed then yes it is much easier to be tempted. i totally relate

ashley - well done on the fruit/vege challenge. i agree the sweet stuff is the hardest to resist. that's why i set myself the goal of only 1 serving per day. these days i am working on moderation :)

Red - Sorry to hear you're having it rough, but glad you found somewhere to get some motivation! Maybe I'll have to head on over the the feather weights myself and find some motivation for me. I may be keeping up on my challenges, but I'm still eating too much. I think that after Christmas, I need to get back to counting those dreaded calories again.

SweetPea - Wow, I should be taking that course on emotional eating! That is one of my problems, that and eating when bored. I'll have to head over and read your blog. I think I checked it out once before, but it seems I never have much time to sit in front of my computer. I'll try to make some time for it.

Ashley - Great job on the challenges! :cp: :woo: I agree with you on the whole Christmas thing. This is a hard time of year with all the temptations and stresses that come with the holidays. Once the holidays are over, we'll all have to re-commit ourselves and get things moving again.

Finished day 1 on exercise and calories. I spent 1 1/2 hours in PT this morning, so counted that as 30 minutes of exercise. They just about killed me with a new weight-lifting routine!

Red - sounds like you're solidly back on track - good for you.

Sweet pea - I was just looking at your blog, which is really cool. How does the Weblog contest work?

DJ - I find it much easier to stay on track if I count calories, even if I don't limit them. Did you count calories when you lost so much weight?

Ashley - Yes, I've been counting calories for close to 2 years now and that's how I lost the weight. I just took a break. I was feeling rather burned out on keeping track of every single calorie, but I'm ready to get back into it, (I think). I know it's going to be hard over the holidays, but I'm scared that if I don't, things might get out of control I guess.

Nope, they just don't arrive, and I'm not sure why. I might try changing to a different email account. This is a long term problem and unfortunately at this time of the year I need reminders LOL:dizzy:

Normally I run everything off my diary and computer reminders but right now I'm so busy I just wait until I get an email message that there have been new posts.

My report - exercise is all fine but I have to go count back and see what day I started the challenge as I have no idea how many days have passed since I started the challenge.

Sugar - yesterday I made a mistake. I had a lemon lime and bitters thinking it would be my one sugar treat but then later I remembered I'd already had an ice cream grrrrr. See, definitely a bit disorganised at the moment. Normally I tell myself at the beginning of the day what my one sugar treat will be and then it's easy to stick with but yday I didn't plan and didn't pay enough attention to what I ate. Lesson learned. I will restart that challenge. I'm early into it so no point taking it as a pause

The exercise one I barely held onto yesterday. Counting calories I guess I should have never started. I've just had way too much to do lately to even think about it. I'm counting that one as a bust. Today we're off to see Santa for my little one, and to try to finish up shopping and baking so I know I'll never get it done again.

Okay, enough out of me. Guess I'm a little frustrated with myself.

You know I'm thinking it was my email address. For some reason the notifications are working with my gmail address, and yes I did have 3FC in my filters as white listed but for some reason they didn't arrive via yahoo. Strange...

DJ relax!!! Just take baby steps, you don't have to conquer the world in 21 days. If you can get the exercise one right, then just do that for 21 days. Then when that is no longer a challenge add the calorie counting. That way you can be more focused

My exercise was fine yday but I still have to count back and see how many days I've done. Gosh it looks like its only 4 days. Hmmm felt like longer LOL.

boy time flies, i can not believe the year is nearly over.
i'm not doing so well at the moment. i won a legal case and the other side appealed. i found out that even if i win the other side will only have to pay $6k-8k of the legal costs which are humungous. i am thinking of selling my car and buying a cheaper model so i don't have to pay interest on the overdraft. this morning it came to a head. tom and the lawyer still hasn't sent me something from 2 weeks ago and kept saying she'd "try" to get it out, which means don't hold your breath. i burst into tears and sobbed my little heart out.

there's other stuff going on too. i am in a state of overwhelm

i pulled myself together enough to go into town and check out cars but i didn't see anything suitable. i resisted buying wine but i still feel pretty down. i want to write a really rude letter to the lawyer about lack of service. if you only knew how much money i spent on them in the last 18 mo. you could feed an african village for a lifetime and still have change left over to buy a few goats with the money i gave the firm. i bet the partners are all putting in new swimming pools this summer.

anyway, whinge over. i'm exhausted, run down and very disinterested in worrying about calories. i managed to keep it together and buy a healthy sandwich for lunch and just 2 little sweet treats. i was ok with breaking my rule about only 1 sweet treat so long as i didn't go overboard. but hmmmm... i don't want to sell my nice car!!! and i don't want to go thru all this legal hassle and trauma. but there is no way out of it. i have to put on a defence so it has to go forward

lawyers haven't even sent me a xmas present. aren't i greedy hehe? but i'm sure i deserve to be sent something magnificent after the amount i spent on them.

anyway i'm going to take a break from my goals for a few days. i still aim to do the exercise but i won't be upset if i only do 20 mins or skip a day!

Exercise and counting calories are history. Monday, I totally forgot to count any calories and was too busy to make it up later. I did exercise, but Sunday I didn't. Yesterday, my youngest managed to come down with the stomach flu, so as you can imagine, I was rather distracted and got no challenges done. Luckily he's fine today and I'm hoping things will be back to normal.

I think at this point, I'm not going to declare a challenge until next week. The rest of my week will actually be somewhat calm for once, but with Christmas just days away now, I think I'll hold off.

Sweet Pea - Sounds like a break may be good for you right now. I sure hope things get better for you soon.

Red - Glad to hear you're hanging in there!

Ashley - You're probably right about having people in here after New Year's! I know I will be!

I'm slightly over my limit for the day, so today is a pause day on the calories. Had one too many office sweets today.

Sweet Pea - I'm sorry to hear things are not going well with the legal issue. Lawyers always manage to come out ahead no matter how the case turns out. You don't want a Christmas present from the lawyer - he'd just charge you $500 per hour for it! Take some time out to get your life back in order and we hope to see you back here working hard after that.

Red - I like the way you phrased your crunches. Creeping along with crunches....

DJ - Hanging onto two challenges in the face of the Christmas rush, plus a child with the flu, is a monumental feat.

Just want to report Day 3 in the bag on the crunch challenge and so far, so good on the no-sugar challenge. I found two little unmentionables in my locker at work and was about to blow off that challenge for another day, then said, heck, if not now, WHEN?!?!? and put those little things from a small Pennsylvania town back in my locker... ;) Let's see how my resolve holds.....

I had little time at the gym but pat myself on the back for just getting there and doing a bit of weight training. After all, it's a 50-minute walk there and good discipline to have moved the butt, so I'm happy! :yes:

Got another day down on both the crunches and the no-sugar challenges! I am rockin'!! :yes: And tonight (now!) is Christmas Eve and it's the custom to buy an unmentionable edible! :eek: But I am totally immune to such temptation! :strong: It feels good to be off the sugar again, really.
So, Day 5 on crunches is done. Day 3 on sugar.

There is some here but it's not the same....just a work day for me tomorrow, though I have decided NOT to go into the office. Morning everyone.

Merry Christmas Red, hope the New Year coming will bring you a better year than you had last year. And Seansons Greetings to all the others on this thread too.

It's been a bit hectic these last couple of months with relocating to Townsville until April next year and Christmas and whatnot, but I shall be back here with a personal challenge after the 5th January when life as I know it goes back to normal. I haven't exactly done badly since the last challenge but I haven't done brilliantly either so....... a challenge is coming.

I did, went to a yearend party with the racing writers and won a portable DVD player at bingo! Hurrah! That's the first time I ever won anything big. Well, it's off to work today and I'm running late. It was a workday yesterday as well but I just decided I was NOT going to go into that office on Christmas Day! :nono: So, I went out, saw the horse, had a bit of a ride and then to the press meet and party! An actual Christmas-like day after all! It'd be great to have you in here doing a challenge again! Are you really going to? I sure hope so. :yes: Best of all in 2007. I'm back from my holiday. Had a wonderful time at my son's house and seeing old friends again, but now back to reality tomorrow. I'm goin on vacation for a week starting New Year's Eve, so am really expecting this will be more of a 7-day challenge!

Red - sounds like you had a nice Christmas day with your horse. Congratulations on winning the DVD player. What kind of horse do you have?

I've been around this site for years Ashley, I have participated in several personal challenges but because I go to some odd places in my work (the latest one is quite civilised) I don't always get too much chance to go online or to exercise in the spirit of the challenge. I don't get back to Townsville until 5th January, tha's why I am not starting the challenge until then. I'm aiming for a 10% body weight loss this year. That doesn't sound like much (7.7kg)but since it takes forever to lose anything in this body, it will be a challenge.

Okay, better go check out the other threads. See you all. Red, you are keeping some interesting hours I see. Very Japanese.

I had two yearend parties in a row, made the last train home (partway) and had to get a taxi the rest. That's doing far better than often, when I have to take a taxi the whole way! Good luck on your challenge and good for you for starting up so promptly, not giving yourself excuses through New Year's or anything! :) Thank you for recognizing my dedication. I am hanging in there, really feel good to be off the sugar. Still, my dedication cannot be compared to elsewhere, where Christmas is bigger and families come into the picture. Here, it's just me and the cats and the parties are just about least that's how I see them. I am being good with the sugar though, so I guess I'll give myself a little credit. ;)

Hi everyone! Sounds like you are all doing good and had a good holiday. We had a great Christmas ourselves. I am really enjoying my week off of work. I am however, getting things back to normal starting today. Thought about waiting until after New Year's, but, I just can't justify that one, so here goes..

Counting calories (no actual limit right now, just getting back to the habit) - Level 3

Exercise everyday - level 3

THink that's enough for right now. I'm looking forward to getting back into the exercise thing. I asked for, and recieved for Christmas, a stability ball and a new step. The step I'm really excited about. It's one of those high steps that goes up to 14" so I can use it for aerobics at a lower height and strength training at the higher height. Last year I got my first step which only goes up to 6" and it turned out to be my favorite piece of equipment. Now I can push myself a little more.

Red - Congrats on the DVD player! Sounds like you had a better Christmas than you were expecting! Good going on those challenges too! You've kept going even though the rest of us were on break, that's great!

Hey Shad - Glad to hear you'll be back with us! Bet you're looking forward to your life getting back to normal again! Good luck with everything.

Ashley - Glad to hear you had a good Christmas with your son and friends! Good luck with your challenges.

Hi Ladies- Hi Red! My weekly thread died so I'm back to join the 21 day challenge again. I miss my 3fc buddies but I know I will find some new friends here and Red -you are a dear old friend - How are you doing?

My challenge is to move my bb (big butt) every day for 21 days. I am on WW but not doing well - may have to check into one of their threads too. Gained 7 lbs over the holiday :yikes: but I am resolved to get back into shape - I am teaching 2 belly dancing classes this semester.

Finished day 2 with calories and exercise. I've been thinking of New Year's resolutions. I typically put something like "lose 50 pounds" on my list of resolutions, and then I typically scratch it off the list after about two days. This year, I intend to change this approach to something geared more towards an improvement in my lifestyle instead. Maybe parking at the far end of the lot each day, or starting a new activity or hobby that involves exercise of some sort. Still thinking on this. :idea:

DJ - 14" step??? Wow that is impressive :carrot: You'll be able to kick butt doing steps that high.

Shad - let me change that to "welcome back". You must have interesting stories to go with the odd places where you work. One of my sisters travels quite a bit with her job, and her life always sounds so exciting compared with mine, where I rarely leave town.

Red - I grew up riding horses as work animals. We always had a few horses in use for herding cattle. Had a paint once, but I had to look up a picture of the Haflinger. Can't say I ever came to appreciate the horses as a source of anything approaching fun - they were always an instrument of work!

Sweet Pea - fired up is great! Good luck with your challenges.

ashley- you made me laugh. doesn't everyone do that? we all have these really great intentions and a huge wishlist for our new year's resolutions and then life interferes, enthusiasm fades and we go back to our old ways.

I think it's better to set small goals, or if you have a big goal to break it down into smaller goals. Imagine if we could add one new habit each month! In a year our lives would be totally transformed

you know i'm still not getting notifications. I switched to my gmail address and at first the notifications came, but now they've stopped. Weird. I checked my spam folder and there's nothing lurking there!

Boy, oh boy.

It has been slightly more than a year, since I first registered on 3FC.
Back then, I thought of a New Year resolution and decided to get a jump start.
I began my journey on December 1st. Not that I really had it all together, but slowly, especially through multiple trials, I managed to have a few successful challenges.
Time passed, I lost some weight. More time passed and I slipped. I tried twice to make a comeback, but as I see it now I did not have full commitment on the inside.
There have been days, when I would say at night "tomorrow is the day", but in the morning I would forget to even think about the gym once daily activities kicked in.
Recently I switched jobs. My new role is very demanding, busy and with lots of stress. Yet, my manager does not fail to remind me to find "the work life balance". So here I am ready for a new discovery. It is too late to head start for 2007, so I will wait till the 2nd of the month to do it.

I am really glad to see that many of you still are trying, you are GREAT examples for me. I can see how one can have weak moments, yet they come back and never give up. I admire your strength, I salute your courage and persistance. I will try to learn from my mistakes, and your examples.

Congratulations on all of your Achivements. Happy New Year. May 2007 carry the day when you will reach your goal, and celebrate it.

exercise day 3, and i'm not sure if i did the full 30 mins as it was stop start.
i was clambering around the farm with my mother but we stopped so often i lost track. i'm going to add some crunches or something to make sure it adds to the right time.

red i am very impressed - 7 days without sugar!!! are you having diet sweets, or skipping sweet things completely?

djs - it's weird. i didn't get a notification for this post either and there's no logical reason why i shouldn't. if i go into my user cp i am subscribed for instant notification. well done on your challenge!

A good day yesterday. I got to use my new step for the 1st time and wow, 14 inches really gets to you! Today I'm going to try it for aerobics with the 8 inch section and see how I do. I'm used to the 6 inch high step, so I'm sure adding another 2 inches will be a challenge for a while.

Sweet Pea - Yep, it's definitely weird that you don't get the notifications. I just can't think of anything else that might be causing it. Just make sure you get in here once a day to keep up with us and let us know you're there!

Cbeta - Glad to see you back on here! I agree with your manager about finding that work, life balance! That is an absolute must! Looking forward to your new challenge(s) on the 2nd. We'll be here for you!

Sweet pea - I like the concept of one new habit per month. That truly would transform my life over a year's time.

CBETa - welcome back. I constantly talk to people who report to me about work/life balance, but I find it can be easier to preach than to practice.

DJ - I just can't get over the idea of a 14 inch step. You'll have to let us know how the 8 inch goes. I usually use the step with just one platform under it at the gym. I'm guessing it's approx 5 inches. I cannot even imagine 14 inches high.

Mscat - I've seen several ads for belly dancing classes lately. Is it difficult to get started?

Red - hope things are going well for you.

Yesterday, I turned down all sorts of sweets. I don't really know why but I have some sort of resolve power working right now. Let's hope it can continue... :yes:

I'm back! Hey Red, DJ, sweet and everyone else! So I disappeared for a few months... was way overwhelmed with school, work, life... finally back on track and pulling things back on track... including my exercise and diet habits! Alright I'm starting my new challenges tomorrow! ... much like the same ones before, but hey they were effective! Here goes nothing!
Under 2000 calories - level 3
15 minutes of exercise a day - level 3
Fitday logging - level 1
I'm back where I can axcess a gym again and when I go I usually do for an hour but due to my work hours I can only make it there a few days a week so I'm going to put my challenge down to 15 minutes so I can throw in a tape or two at home when I can't make it to the gym!
I'm so glad to be back! Good luck to all!

I felt so bummed out today but dragged myself to the gym and did a bit of weight training. Oh, and I made fresh carrot juice...may become part of a new challenge. Hurrah! Well, I'm getting better at remembering to log those calories and enjoying my new step. Yes, 14" is VERY high, but it's only used for step ups, it's not used for any fast aerobic steps. I did use the 8" step yesterday for my aerobic workout and wow, what a difference. I've used the 6" for a year now and hardly feel it anymore. Adding in those 2" was amazingly difficult. I actually had to modify the workout to make it through and I didn't even do the last 10 minutes of the workout! That's ok though, it gives me something to work towards.

Red - Busy as normal I see, but you're doing great with those challenges! Keep it up!

Pink - Glad to have you back! Sounds like you're ready to get going again. That's great!

Well, it's New Year's Eve and I'm planning on having a quiet one, in bed and all that, no noise, no booze, no temples (that's the Japanese way). It is nice, very quiet and all but the crowds are unreal and the local neighborhood temple alone would just be too depressing. Better to go tomorrow to a big one or something, that's the tradition too, the first few days of the year everyone gets dressed up and makes a visit to the temple to give a quick pray for the new year. Okay, enough of the Japanese lesson. I am proud to say I have notched yet another day in my double challenge, making 12 Days done on crunches and soon to be 10 on no sugar! Now that is something to celebrate!! :dizzy:

I also got to the gym today, ran 3K and did more weights. I plan to go again tomorrow even though both days have meant extra money charged. It is so nice to have the time to work out. AND, I made fresh carrot juice again today and feel revved! I used to make fresh vegetable juice all the time and my skin used to glow. I am going to get back into that and try to take care of myself better. These last days of 2006 have seen me starting to get my act together again on the sugar, but there must be more. I have declared that I WILL once and for all get buff this year like never before! Yowzah! Watch out boys, here I come!! :dancer: So, in the spirit of buffness I am declaring two more challenges and there WILL be more, but until goes, two stealths, no alcohol and fresh vegetable juice every day!! I am completing Day 2 on both! Not bad for an Eve declaration, eh? :encore: I even ordered a fancy juicer from the States today, accepted the free protein bar at the gym (sugar-laden) and stashed it away. I bought lots of fresh vegetables and miso and seaweed and ate that and plan to make it a regular thing. I am stoked. I can see the brightness in my eyes already! And, no, I have not had a drop of alcohol! :nono:

It's 2007 Here!!!!

I am very very hungry but it is after midnight – it’s 2007. OMG!!! Can you believe it? another year gone.

I walked the dogs today so that's day 5 of my exercise challenge.

I was going to go dancing tonight but I piked out. I was really tired so I had a lie down and by the time I woke it was late and I couldn't be bothered going out. Poor excuse isn't it?

Anyway I stayed in. Watched a bit of TV, ate a healthy dinner and not so healthy dessert.

I have been going through my tasks and deleting a lot of them. I have them on Outlook and schedule dates etc. I took dates off some, reduced the frequency of some (e,g do it fortnightly instead of weekly) and deleted a few. I still have a lot of tasks there. I think > 100

Ok just counted 118 – that really is too many. Some of them are ideas e.g. ways to promote my website and that sort of thing. I will have to find a better system. No wonder I feel overwhelmed, and that list doesn’t even include big things like my mother’s accounts, which I confess were on my list this time last year.

I haven't made any new year's resolutions. I make goals regularly but I am thinking of challenging myself to do something totally new like abseiling - my enthusiasm for that may die quickly :D


Red: you are really smokin' - well done on your challenges. I'm really impressed with your motivation.

djs: well done on day 3. It's years since I've done step workouts. They used to kill my quads. These days I do an occasional hill on my walks and that's it. Sometimes I do the tango at dance. That is done in squat position with bended knees and really challenges me to strengthen my quads

Finished day 5.

I'm off to spend a week's vacation in Seattle with some of my family. They eat way too much rich food, so I'm sure my calorie count will suffer; but, on the plus side, they get a lot of exercise. We're planning to go into the mountains for a couple days to play in the snow. My daughter-in-law has only seen snow once before in her life, so she's really excited about the trip.

I'll be back in a week and ready to jump back into the 21-day challenge.

I weighed myself this morning and did all my measurements. Would you believe another pound crept on? And this is despite a light dinner and no PM munching. Things are definitely tracking in the wrong direction, guess it's just one of those fluctuations. I'm not going to let it worry me too much

Lovely and sunny this morning but I had a bad night’s sleep. Didn’t get to sleep until near 3am and then the dogs barked at 430am at some motorbikes that came down the street so not exactly bright eyed and bushy tailed. I am starting the day with my water and lemon juice. After that … we’ll see! And then I should finish mowing lawns. yuck

My goals are pretty simple.
I'm not going to follow a set "diet" but work on making sensible choices.
I am going to try and limit my bread servings as I tend to put fat onto bread.

I am only going to weigh once a week. This is going to be my biggest challenge as I just can't seem to keep away from my scales but i know I have to.
If I lose weight I tend to be more relaxed about food choices and then tend to put on.

I want to try not to eat anything after 7.30 pm at night and if I do have something it will have to be a low cal WW snack.
I'm already exercising 30-40 plus minutes a day so I guess I'll just up the intensity.

I also want to increase my water intake as I've been slack about that and seeing as it's Summer here it's even more important.

Did you read the very first post in the thread where the rules and guidelines of the challenge are explained? Please do if you haven't.
It looks from the sounds of it that you are readying a three-way challenge; no eating after 7:30, more exercise, more water. Are these to be three separate challenges or one mega-one, which means, if you don't accomplish one of the three elements you have to take a pause or restart with your count to 21. Recently, it seems most people are splitting them up. I tried all at once for a while but found it too discouraging.
Also what level are your challenges.
That reminds me, my new juice challenge and no booze are gonna have to be threes. I just am too chicken to say anything more than that. :^:
