Hiya peeps ...

I have just started using this site ... and wow isnt it amazing how it keeps track of your calories .. definitely helps to keep me on track lol ..

Anyway .. my question is ... does everyone have a high number of Carbos in their daily totals??

Apart from today I have been happy to see my Fat is under 30% each day (need to try to get them a little lower than that I think tho), today I splurged a little and darn if they didnt hit 42%!!!! Not gonna do that again! But mainly I have noticed that my carbos are always the highest percentage .. 0% for the Alcohol tho lol .. although if I have many more weeks like the last few that may go up a little rofl.

Incredible that my carbos are so high tho :dizzy: I only have bread once a day and that is for lunch ... humm .. maybe I need to look for a lower carbo cereal for breakfast??

Any ideas or suggestions or info much appreciated .. always nice to get another perspective on the journey :)

Hi, something I noticed about Fitday is it's better to modify a number of their foods. I don't know specifically about carbs, but my focus was fat and salt.

The "recipes" for a number of normal foods (even cooking plain, fresh veggies) that I would make at home with no salt or no additional fat, they would assume that it had been added. If you click on the food name it shows what goes into their figures.

I would also check their figures against what ever the actual package says. Lots of differences there. I finally had to customize almost every food to get accurate numbers.

Just a thought.

Carbs are in lots of things, like fruit! Most fruit is sugar and sugar is carbs... so, sugar is also carbs...

you didn't say your % carbs, or whether you're looking to limit them. Carbs per se aren't bad for you. Whole grains in particular, and lots of kinds of fruit are good for you. But if you're eating a lot of processed sweets and sugars, those you might want to cut back on. Many people switch from white breads, pastas and rice to the "brown" or whole grain versions...

For me, carbs are also my highest % item, usually at or above 50%.

What types of foods are you eating? "Bread" type products aren't the only foods with carbs. Carbs are in just about anything, even in small amounts. It could be vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, potatoes, etc.), fruit, cereal, pasta, bread, packaged snacks, oatmeal, crackers, dairy (even skim milk has 12g carbs per serving), condiments (salad dressings, ketchup, bbq sauce, etc.)...the list goes on and on.

Having a lot of carbs is NOT a bad thing, as long as they are from good sources (e.g., 100% whole wheat bread, fruits, veggies, and dairy instead if candy, processed snack foods, "white" breads and rice and pastas, etc.). In fact, unless you are trying to build lots of muscle, the typical diet is comprised of mostly carbs since they provide the most energy. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming between 45-65% of your calories from carbohydrates for a well-balanced diet.

One thing about fitday I didn't like so much ( I use the PC version now) is that it does assume you add salt, butter, or other things to a meal when it's prepared.

I try to manually enter most of my regular foods and from the list that's there I only use the plain items like mustard or salsa. It seems to stay more accurate that way.

Perhaps some of your high numbers are coming from the ingredients that the program 'assumes' you add, and maybe you didn't at all.

But to answer your question.. yeah my carbs seem to be a lot higher than my protein and fat numbers.

Wow .. thank you everyone .. I dont know why I was thinking the carbs only came from breads and pastas .. duh! Of course they are in other things .. I just forgot that ... well ... my carbs are in the "recommended" amount if that is the case .. actually a couple of days this week they are a little under, but I am usually hitting between 48-55% so am happy with that :)

The only sweets I now allow myself are my little snack bar of moro gold (sorta like umm .. mars bars?? but the snack ones in the multibags?), marshmallows (which as a treat I toast a few over a candle rofl), and my gelato ice cream (chocolate of course lol). Considering 2.5 months ago my treats were a whole packet of chocolate biscuits or almost a whole block of chocolate at a time .. I think Im doing reallly good rofl. Oh .. I do also suck on sugar free boiled sweets and oddfellows (they are like a hard mint in case you dont have them over there?). But other than that I have switched from white bread to wheat/rye, I dont have pasta at all really (and that is something I used to have almost every day!), and the only fruits I really have are oranges, strawberries, bananas, apples, plums and stone fruit (like peaches, nectarines etc) ... I waiting until the red grapefruit come in the shops .. oooh LOVE it! Oh and I have been getting mandarins now too. I dont eat nuts any more either .... and I dont add salt to anything or cook with fats/margi (thank goodness for the invention of that cooking paper!!)

Its a learning curve for sure :) Thanks for your help ... I will also check the nutrient guide on my foods against what is on the site and adjust it if I need to ... didnt think of doing that either lol ..

Katt -- It is totally a learning curve! Sounds like you've made some great changes and are becoming really aware of what you eat -- wtg!

BTW, I thought Jill's post was excellent. She said what I wanted to say, only much better!

Hi there Geminitx .... I think one of the best ways to control your portions is to prepare in advance! If you dont work 2 days of the week .. have one day relaxing and then the next day in the kitchen ... precook a bunch of meals and snap freeze them. Make a list of your snacks and meals and get the portions set up in advance so that you wont be tempted to go over. You might need to change your portion sizes over time, but its a trial and error thing.

I started on Jenny Craig, this was mainly to help me get back to a regular eating pattern .. as well as working out the sizes of portions. I now count calories .. using www.fitday.com is a good help I have found so far. Another thing I have noticed is that when I dont drink much water hardly any weight comes off .. but when I hit my 2litre or more I lose a lot more lol .. so keep a water bottle on hand all the time .. if you sip at it (and refill it) all day you will find you can fit it all in :)

Good luck and welcome to the journey :)
