I have pcos and i need to lose about 120, but i would be happy if i lost 65. I only recently found out about pcos. My ob brought it up but my pcp is treating me for it. The ob would only let me have metformin and i didnt want that, i wanted byetta. Pcp gave me byetta and i love it. I think IR and pcos are probably something that is very under diagnosed.

I have PCOS too, diagnosed 20 years ago when the only treatment available was for the infertility aspect and you were told to lose weight for everything else!. I'm on Metformin 2000mg a day. I have lost 64lbs but have 50/60/70 to go - I'll know when I get there!

Hi
I am 34, have pcos and hypo thyroid. Having either one makes it hard to loose weight - but having both makes it a killer. Why do you ask though !!

I am at 190 and want to get to 140. am taking baby steps towards 170 to start with.

I read that a couple of you were taking metformin and byetta, What are those medications for - cz my doc has not put me on anything just asked me to loose weight. :?:

justmemk-That is a bummer the doc did nothing to treat your pcos. Is it your OB that said "just lose weight"? That is kind of like someone with hypothyroid being told, "just eat less and exercise more", it doesnt address that there is an issue with the thyroid gland, just like "just lose weight"...doesnt address the issue with yours ovaries. In my opinion, "just lose weight" doesnt help the condition of PCOS. From what i understand, the weight gain is just a symptom of PCOS. I think your doc has it backwards. PCOS causes weight gain, not weight gain causing PCOS. I would check around, ask a few other docs you see or flat out see a new one.

Oh, and the Byetta i take is for my insulin resistance, that is related to PCOS. Something about the insulin causing the cysts on the ovaries or something. I just know that MOST people are put on a "pre-diabetic" medication as treatment for pcos, because pcos causes insulin problems and it just becomes vicious cycle.

You might want to do some research and see where you stand and see if you agree with your doctor's "Just lose weight" treatment after you get some information on it. Good luck.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in march 06 , and have been ttc for 2 years in october and had a m/c in july 05 and am currently not ovulating. I currently am not on any medication as my gp told me she cannot prescribe it and the fertility dr has failed to give me anything but i have a follow up appointment in November so i will know more then. I was told to lose weight so here i am , i have set myself a mini goal of 2 stones /28lbs/13kg's but i am aiming to lose about 130 ish in the next year.

ONESTAR : I was diagnosed by blood , they look for the progesterone number and the amounts of adrogens(male hormones) and female sex hormones you produce , my adrogens are high at like 16.2 which is why i dont ovualte as i have to many male hormones counter acting the female ones. The dr will explaion it to you in detail if u ask them to cut it down into chunks for you so u can understand the results.

Fellow Cyster here. ;)

Diagnosed in 01. Have about 100 + lbs to lose. Been on a TTC "Break" going to see my dr Oct. 3rd and probably start TTC again.

Feel free to join us in the Monthly TTC and WL thread! ;)

Oopps forgot to put my meds. I take 500 MG. of Fortamet. I was taking Avandia but it was just not working for me. Gave me chest pains and made me swell up like a balloon. The Fortamet is great, no side effects, that I can see. ;)

When i was at my heaviest, 305 pounds and not on birth control pills i was not ovulating AND was TTC...very frustrating. My periods were 80 days apart with no ovulation. I lost down to 280 pounds and my periods regulated and next thing i know i was pregnant. So i do think weight loss and birth control both helped me. I am on birth control pills and now and everything is regular. My doc was going to put me on Clomid so i would ovulate...i got the prescription filled and never took it because i found out i was pregnant. But maybe clomid could be an idea for some of you ttc.

now that Im perimenopausal, Im every 28 days like clock work. First time in my life! (without meds)

...but before this, yes! Once I started loosing the weight, I dont remember at what point....but I started ovulating a little more regularly than I had been. I was actually ovulating, and not having "false" periods, due to the excess estrogen from all the extra fat.

I have PCOS and was diagnosed about 10 years ago. I'm on 1500mg of Metformin per day and working to lose about 150 pounds total. I started at 303.5. . . now I'm down to 292.5 after 3 weeks.

I've got PCOS and I'm hypothyroid as well - double bummer:(

I have 77lbs to get to my realistic goal of 150lbs, although at 5'1" I could loose another 20lbs or more. LOL, but at 36 and after 3 kids I will be more than happy at 150lbs (I hope).

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 20's but have only just found a Dr a month or so ago who would prescribe Metformin. Unlike others, Metformin has not been the miracle weight loss cure for me, I am still doing it the HARD way with lots of exercise and a high protein/low GI carb diet.

I found out I had PCOS about 4 years ago when I had problems getting pregnant. Really was never treated for it was just told to lose weight and getting pregnant would be easier. I did get Pg using clomid gained more weight after a misscarriage ....the clomid stopped working for me once I gained more weight. My plan of action is to lose 30 pounds go back and try the clomid again. I have mainly been doing WW and low carbing when I know I've over done the sugar.

I am on metformin 1000 mg/day but everything I've read says it should be at 1500mg/day so I'm going to ask my endo when I go back in December. I have about 90 pounds left to lose. I have PCOS with insulin resistance- I was diagnosed last summer after TTC#2 and once again having problems. After going on Avandia my cycles became regular and I was able to conceive.

I have about 25 pounds to lose. Ideally, I'd like to lose about forty, but 25 would put me in the middle of my weight range & is probably much more realistic, since I haven't weighed that lower weight since high school. I'm really more concerned about my health than my weight # at this point... during both pregnancies I had gestational diabetes, and I really do not want my IR to go into full-blown diabetes if I can help it.

After reading everyone's stories here, the more I want to go into my OB and knock her out. LOL She told me she wouldn't put me on anything until I lost weight. I understand I don't want kids right now with the weight I am carrying because it's not healthy for me or a future baby. I have never been able to get pregnant and the whole reason I am losing the weight is so I can have a child. This metforim stuff you guys are talking about, is that for weight loss? My OB told me there really isn't any meds she could prescribe me that would help me lose weight. GRRR

Hi Candlemaker!

Met is for insulin resistance but it can in some women provide assistance with weightloss. (with healthy eating and exercise of course). I was on it, well a "form" of it, actually I think I was on two kinds of it and they both made me really sick so I couldn't take those but now I'm on Fortamet, which is another form of it, but different and it doesn't make me sick at all. Foramet is also supposed to have a side effect of Ovulation. (in some women at least)

My dr wanted me to lose 30% of my weight, but didn't harp on my weight that much.

Hi! I was diagnosed with PCOS this past summer. My doctor told gave me Metformin, but only 500mg 2x a day. I guess it doesn't work for me because I am not really losing anything. I asked if I could go up to 1000mg, but she said no. I try to eat healthy and be active, but I am always gaining. I also found out that I have severe GERD and possible IBS, so I am now even more careful at what I eat as of lately. I really do wonder if I should be on a higher m.g. for the Met.

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I have PCOS and am trying to lose weight. I'm not sure what a realistic final goal is for me. I'm built like a brick s**t house naturally and I've always weighed more than I looked. So, I'm going to go with mini goals for now and adjust accordingly as I go along.
I'm increasing exercise, improving the quality of food I eat, and just started taking Vitex.

Hiya Ladies!

I'm new to the boards, saw this thread and thought I'd check in. I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18 (*gasp* that is NOT 15 years ago already??!! :faint:) The only treatment I really had was BCP and Provera to regulate my cycles, which was fine with me until now that I'm married and ttc. Not sure what steps to take next, but since I just found out I have diabetes too I'm on 2000 mg/day of Met and 10 mcg/day of Byetta which have brought good ole AF back. I need to lose 100 lbs but am working for 70 right now. Good luck to you all and hopefully we'll get to know each other better.

Many PCOS women experience weightloss when Metformin is combined with daily exercise and a good diet that controls insulin levels, and although Metformin is a diabetes drug, it is very commonly used to treat PCOS (some doctors use it eve in patients that do not show Insulin Resistance).

Because IR leads to diabetes, it is so important to get the insulin levels (and weight) under control so that we have the best chance of staying healthy in the future.

If you OB, or Gp is not willing to prescribe it, could you take in some printed research material for him/her to read (have a look at www.soulcysters.com for scientific evidence for teh use of Metformin). If that is not possible, I would really recommend finding another Doctor (or endocrinoligist) who actually specialises in PCOS...unfortunately there are many Doctors today wh still don't know what it is or how to treat it.

Hey Cysters!

I have PCOS as well and desperately need to lose some weight. I'd like to lost a total of 95lbs by this time next year. It sounds like a lot but I think I can do it. I've lost 7lbs in almost 2mths without working out. I just bought a WATP's DVD so I plan on doing that again (it worked awesome while low carbing) when I have free time and the kids are sleeping.

I noticed the PCOS symptoms when I was in my late teens, mostly a bit of facial hair and weight gain.

I lost a great deal of weight in 1993 and became pregnant. After I had my son, the weight piled on and I began to have fewer periods. I was finally diagnosed in 2003.

I moved from VA in July and am still looking for employment. I do not have insurance and can't afford my medications. I have been careful with what I eat and exercise daily. I have type II diabetes, so I am hoping to find a job that is near public transportation or walking distance soon.

From my experiences with doctors in the past, I learned that if one is not helping with diet info, meds and just enough general info on PCOS, find a new doctor. Many said to just diet...no blood tests or anything. I finally had found one that gave more info and meds but still did not offer enough support.

Weight loss has helped with some of the symptoms. I now have regular periods and somewhat less facial hair.

Another cyster here...

I was diagnosed when I was 18. I gained some weight in college and have lost it since I graduated and I'm now back where I started (sigh). I was on glucophage for about 6 months last year but I have irritable bowel syndrome and my GI tract just couldn't handle it so my doc took me off.

I know a lot of people do low carb diets for PCOS/IR, but being vegan and having IBS my diet is naturally carb-high. Has anyone had any luck with non-low carb diets? I've lost weight since I went vegan last spring but not as fast as I'd like.

i cant even really recall when i was diagnosed with pcos....i think i was a freshman in college (26 now) but i never really took it seriously and in fact didnt even know much about it until really recently. ive decided to take charge and do something about my weight before i develop diabetes (or any of the other hundreds of awful things that can come of being obese).

i want to lose a LOT...like over 100lbs a lot. thinking about that depresses me, so i have focus on the next 10lbs to keep myself motivated.

I am 39 and have been battling issues with PCO and insulin resistance since I was 28. I was on Metformin, but my endocrinologist took me off it in Aug. Since then, I have still been losing weight...but slowly. I started working out at Pace Fitness (something like Curves) in Sept. I recently had abdomen surgery (Dec 8) and with Christmas I have gained back 4lbs. I will persevere!

Hi, this is my first post. I was first diagnosed with PCOS when i was 15. the only thing they told me was that i had it and that i may have problems trying for a baby when the time came.

I didnt realy worry about it and got on with life, then after a couple of years i started to get realy bad hair growth on my chin and chest........... it was worring but even after speaking to my doctor, there was no progress. So i went on to wax / use cream and then shave, almost everyday.

I had never known that there was a link to insulin risistance and PCOS, mabe if i had been told, i may of tryed to loose weight sooner. When i was 28 i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I hadnt realised how much more difficult it was to loose weight..........make sure you dont eat too much...................make sure you eat enough to keep your suger levels normal.............i didnt know if i was comming or going.

I started a Low GI, Low fat diet about a month ago and have lost a stone (gained a bit of this over christmas tho) I have found this diet good for me as it keeps my sugerlevel around the recomended amount.

I am 17 and a half stone, hoping to get to 14 and a half for my IVF treatment.

Hi, I'm new here. Today is my first day. I have PCOS/insulin resistance and a whole host of other GYN issues that are making it almost impossible to get pregnant. I really haven't paid attention to losing weight because I thought I would get pregnant and just get fat again. As it stands, I won't be getting pregnant anytime soon, so I've gotta lose some weight. I took metformin for a while and couldn't tell a difference so I just gave up on it.

I weigh 200 pounds and am 5'5"; I am at my personal fattest. I'm 36 years old, married, and happy otherwise.

So. Here I am ladies. Consider me a fat chick, too. No offense, but I'd love to be a skinny chick.

Hi! I'm Melissa and I am new to the website and to PCOS. I was diagnosed this past fall after having a second miscarriage this past summer. I was determined to find out why this was happening to me, so I kept bugging the Drs. Well I went in to the hospital to have the D&C and my sugar was 185 fasting. So my OBGYN suggested I see a endocrinologist. He just asked some questions and looked me over. He then diagnosed me with PCOS. I currently take metformin/glucophage and I recently started working out and watching what I eat just as he suggested. It's hard but I'm trying. I am an certified emotional eater. Going through all the divorce stuff has kinda stolen my strength. Everytime we fight or he does something stupid here I go to find something to "make me happy". So I am glad I found this website. I have found great information and support. I am going through alot of changes in life right now so the motivation is much in need.

Thanks in advance for the advice and support.

My current weight is 268, my goal is 215-200, my highest weight was 305.

I was a healthy weight until I hit my mid twenties, but always had to diet, diet, diet and exercise like a maniac. Then I remember one year when I was 25, I got that birth control shot that keeps you from having periods? I gained 100 pounds in one year. It was unreal. I don't know if the two have anything to do with each other, But after that year, my periods became really irrgular, and two years ago, I stopped for nine months, then had a period that went on for seven weeks and I had to have a blood transfusion. My gyn said I have PCOS; she wanted to put me on Yasmin, but I have severe depression when I take hormone pills, so I take medroxyprogesterone once every six weeks for a few days and it starts my cycle for me. I am a complete lunatic for those few days I am on those pills: I have to warn my family! :dizzy: So now you know why I hate taking hormones!
I noticed a long time ago having episodes of my blood sugar dropping and rising, and feeling terribly lethargic and getting bad headaches and dizzy when I didn't eat in 4 hours, which never happened before. My doctor is not as interested in helping, but to be fair, I avoid treatment as much as I can. I hate the big "disappointment" look and head shaking my doctors give me when they say, Oh, you've gained another 10 lbs I see.
I know that is not a good thing, but it is at least honest, and that is what we are here for, right?
I hope 2007 is a new year that being healthy is going to happen for me. I have no support from the junk-food junkies at home, so I came looking here. I don't care how many pounds I lose, I just want to feel like a normal person again, fit in normal size clothes, sit in a folding chair without fear :^: or refuse to have my picture taken, and not have people stare at me or refuse to look at me because I am so heavy.
Thanks for letting me get that out, and I look forward to talking to all of you guys and gals here.

Hi all, I'm sort of new to the list (I've actually been a member for a while but not an active one). I have PCOS, type II diabetes and hypothyroidism. Right now I'm taking 112mcg of levothyroxine and 850mg Metformin 2x/day.

I recently found a new endocrinologist (Dennis Gage) who was recommend on the Soul Cysters board and I feel a new energy towards my health and weight loss program. I don't want to take more medications so my only other option is to get more serious about my diet and exercise program.

I've started keeping a food journal for the first time ever and I've found it really helps a lot. I honestly didn't realize how much I eat on a regular basis. So I'm hoping that hanging around here and connecting with cysters will help me stay on target

Hello to all the new girls on the board!! Welcome and please stay in touch!

Sherry: I have a problem with junk food eaters in the house too. It's been a real process for me to stop eating it too, so I know what you're up against. My husband is a culinary student! Could it be any worse?! lol. My little brother (he lives with us) lives on candy bars and doesn't gain a pound ever! It's hard but once I started seeing results it was a lot easier to say no.

I also just want to feel like myself again....It really has nothing to do with the number on the scale. I think it's a healthy outlook.

Tiffany: You can do this! One pound at a time...

Melissa: Welcome. First off, I'm so sorry to hear about your mc's... I've been fortunate not to have to experience that. It's excellent that you're being assertive with your doctors to find out what's going on with your body!! I wish there was a one size fits all answer for us PCOS girls...sigh...Couldn't be that easy, huh?
I'm an emotional eater too, but I think I'm beating that these days. I have to have a full on conversation with myself when I head to the kitchen without even realizing it. "Now now Vanessa, are you really hungry? Didn't you just eat? Yeah...a glass of water, that's the ticket!" lol

Debbie: Yeah! It's great to see that your feeling more optomistic about your PCOS! It's the only way I've been sticking with it, for sure! I journal too, and just started keeping track of the times that I eat. I'm starting to try to space my meals evenly throughout the day. It sounds elementary but I'm not used to doing anything with myself in mind, so it helps!

Hi all!

New to the boards, can't believe I didn't discover them earlier! I was lucky that I was diagnosed at age 21, and was able to make PCOS live with me and not me live with PCOS. I find I do and feel the best when I'm following the holisitic approach of limiting starches and working out regularly. It should've been a sign when I put on 15 pounds of muscle in a matter of two months, what woman is capable of that?

Dropped down from my highest of somewhere around 200 pounds about 2 years ago. I'm now doing LA Weight Loss and dropped the 10 pound I've been yo-yoing since. Now if I can only drop the last 15 or so to get me down to a toned size 8.

I have had PCOS for a very long time. I have been fortunate to get pregnant w/o any help, but am paying for ignoring my PCOS for so long. I am only 39, but am taking BP pills and if my cholesterol does not come down by the time I am 40, I will be on meds for that as well. I also have a bladder condition that is very painful and interferes with my life.

That gives me a little over 8 months to get it going and lose some of this weight. I would like to lose at least 60 pounds.

Hey Girls,
I'm another PCOSer. Found out I have it when I started TTC. I now have 2 beautiful blessings thanks to clomid + met (our son) and IVF (our daughter). My daughter is now 7 months...I LOST weight while I was pg, same thing happened with my son and now the wacko hormones are well and truly kicking in again. I have been eating really badly and I want to STOP!!
I have about 80lbs to lose - gee it's depressing to say that out loud.
I haven't been taking my met either which doesn't help with cravings etc.

So, I need to get back on track and take my met and stick to a healthy eating plan and exercise. I take 2000mg of met per day.

Hi,

I was diagnosed with PCOS a year and a half ago after losing so much blood that I needed 7 units transfused - the world record heaviest totm!

I'm interested to hear about the drugs you have been prescribed. I haven't been prescribed anything that might specifically address insulin resistance. I suspect that this has been at the root of my overeating for years and I now keep my blood sugar stable by eating complex carbs/ protein/ fat at every meal - this is what I discovered worked for me before I knew that this is recommended for PCOS. I take provera for one week in my cycle and it has lightened and regularised my cycle but it's suspected that I don't ovulate.

I too have been told that weight loss will improve my symptoms. For others who have posted on this - from what I've read it's a bit of a viscious cycle - PCOS can cause weight gain and make it very difficult to lose weight but the fatter you are the more severe the PCOS is (in my case I have excess oestrogen and fat bodies tend to store more oestrogen thus exacerbating the problem) so the only way of easing symptoms is to lose weight. Easier said than done I know!

If it's any consolation I found out I had PCOS after I'd lost 100lbs. I always wondered why I found it so difficult to squeeze off a pound - now I know. I do wonder if medication might help me shift my remaining 75lbs but I suspect it'll continue to come off if I work at it.

EM ~ Welcome!! I am glad that you have found us for support of your PCOS!!

Weight can change some people's PCOS (but then again most everyone can drop a few pounds) but that's not what causes it or the 'fix it all'.

If you ever need anything PM me!!
