Walking should be fine (or running if you're fit enough!), but if you're talking about weight training then you need to stick to isolation exercises. These are the ones where only one joint moves (Leg extension, Lex Curl, etc). Unfortunately they burn less calories than Compound exercises (more than one joint moves: squats, lunges, etc)
Of more inportance may be how your program is structured. Many people do the usual 3 sets of 10 reps then wonder why they bulk up.
