Default Needed: Home gym-esque equipment

Before I moved, I would go to the Y religiously and loved it. We had free memberships with my husband's job. Now we are here with new jobs and I can't afford the Y or other gyms. The ones I can afford are at least 35 min away and in the opposite direction of work and even farther from home....so I do a lot of walking, some jogging and working on the stability ball. However, what else can I do or do I need to be able to get something closer to a health club work out in terms of strength/resistance training ( I miss lifting weights, but always used machines.) and cardio..especially with winter around the corner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

OG

This might be a good time to switch to free weights from machines. I used to be a machinequeen until coming to this forum and learning the added value of a free weight workout, and I have switched. It is much different for me (harder and challenging). It's opened new doors! You can pick up some hand weights at Target in like 5, 8, and 10 fairly cheaply and be all set. They even go on 30% off sales from time to time, watch for them. Virtually anything you did on a machine you can do with f/w. And things like leg work, thigh work, I find to be MUCH harder standing on my own w/weights than I did on a machine.

And for cardio, some in home dvd's might be the thing as well as get you thru the cold winter. The FIRM, so tae-bo, something like that. HTHelps
