Hi I hope everyone is doing well. My name is Jeni, I am married (5 years on Aug 18) I have two great kids, Makenna is 3 and Tommy is 10 months. My highest weight was 199, before I got pregnant with Maki. I developed Gestational diabetes in both my pregnancies so I watched my weight and didn't gain much (well anything) with either pregnancy. I have been pretty much stuck in the 180's since Tommy was born. On Aug 7th I started a diet and exercise plan which I hope to Lose 50 lbs by Valentines Day.
Start weight: 187
Current weight: 184

08-15-2006, 01:54 PM
Hi Jeni, I think we are in a pretty similar boat. I am 35 and the mom of 1 very adorable 19 month old. I can't blame him for my weight because the day after I delivered him I was at the weight I conceived him. My 187 lbs are all my fault.

have found myself avoiding taking pictures with him because I look so bad. My husband got very angry at me this weekend for erasing a few pics of me and him at the beach. I hated them. I had to. So here I am again looking for someone to help me hold myself accountable. I am not looking for, "it is ok" Iam looking for "get off your *** and make it happen". If you are interested in that kind of brutal truth weight loss buddy. I am the gal for you.

Regarless, Good Luck on your weight loss endevor,

08-15-2006, 02:55 PM
HI Amanda, If you want brutal, I can be, I think the only way to loose the weight is to move more/eat less....I know duh! I know too many people (me included) who want a quick fix, but the only thing that will work is doing it over time so I have a long term overall goal, with smaller weekly goals. For instance last week it was drinking 64-80 oz of water per day. This week it is eating 2 servings of fruit per day + 64-80 oz of water per day. Next week it is eating 2 servings of veggies per day + 2 fruits +64-80 oz of water. My exercise goal is to do something everyday. 5 days a week on my exercise bike. Each week I am adding 2 minutes to my time (last week 15 minutes, this week 17 minutes). Plus I am walking after work with some buddies who want to lose weight also (but they aren't very committed.) If I don't walk then I am getting back on my bike after work. The other 2 days a week (mostly Sat and Sun) I will at least spend 10 minutes stretching and doing Pilate type things. I am trying to stick to a 1300 calorie diet.

The hardest thing for me is I can only work out when Tommy is napping, sometimes he naps for 15 minutes sometimes 2 hours. But as long as I do something everyday I will be happy.

Good luck, I hope we can support each other through our ups and downs.

Morning Jeni,

Good, I am glad you are not one to coodle. I need it sometimes.

Your plan of attack seems very sensible. I need to jump on the water bandwagon. I was so good at it then I became hooked on Diet Coke and it has been hard to fit the water in. I have a 32 oz Nalgene bottle that I try to fill in the am and have it knocked out by lunch and then fill it up again and have it knoced out by the time I make it home. I read once that you need to drink have your weight in oz of water. So I am 187, I need to drink roughly 93 oz a day. I don't think I am coming close to that.

My plan of attack is portion control and sticking to 3 meals and 2 snacks. I love to cook and have a hard time curbing my enthusiam for butter. I have to rejoin FitDay because I forgot my usere name but I have found it is helpful to keep track of my calories.

I am a walking fool. I do love it. Sadly my dog is getting too old to join me on my long trips. I live in the city and have several great routes that I take that are around 3-4 miles. The weather is breaking here so I'll be able to get more of it in in the evenings. I inherited a NordicTrack from my mom but it makes a bit of noise so I am afraid of waking up my son it I uses it late at night. But it is a good work out. I am at my best in the am so I try to fit in walking then. I try to walk to work 3 days a week.

So for today:
Breakfast: Kashi cereal, peaches, skim milk
1 Diet Coke mid morning
1 8oz of water

Being in Washington I am sure your day is just starting, Have a great one,

08-16-2006, 01:32 PM
I have heard about the 1/2 your body weight in water too I was going for that, but then I read for every 25lbs overweight you should add 8 oz to the 64oz you should be drinking. So my goal for each day is to get the extra 16 oz I need. I love Diet coke too, I heard a study that a 12 oz can of any pop a day for a year and you will gain 15lbs!! So I quit cold turkey. I get my caffine from coffee. LOTS and LOTs of coffee.
What is FitDay???

08-16-2006, 01:50 PM
Hi Jeni! We have the same anniversary ... we'll be 27 years!

08-16-2006, 02:35 PM

FitDay is a free online diet diary site. It helps you track you calories and your excersize. It also give you a breakdown of how many carbs, protein, fat that you have eaten durning a day. I like it better than sparkepeople, which I found slow to download.

Do you think that bit includes diet soda? I need to do cold turkey as well but I can only drink coffee with milk and sugar so I think that that is just as bad. I do like seltzer water alot but we go through it so fast.

So for today:
Breakfast: Kashi cereal, peaches, skim milk
1 Diet Coke mid morning
1 8oz of water

Lunch: pasta (1c.) with homemade tomato sauce
1 Diet Coke

08-16-2006, 02:38 PM
Susan, what do you use Whey Protein for and how do you include it into your diet.

08-16-2006, 02:50 PM
Hi OB'sMama ..... I mix it in shakes mostly. The fruit, psyllium, protein and water. I have mixed it into hot cereal too.

08-16-2006, 02:52 PM
Wow Susan 27 years ! congrats!!!
Amanda, the study said the average weight gain I am assuming diet sodas were tested too. HOWEVER I know I am the one who mentioned the study but......I don't know who funded the study or what methods they used to determine the results. I just know I drank a lot of diet coke so it scared me. I would definately try cutting back though.

08-16-2006, 03:06 PM
Susan, is the point to fill you up, keep you regular? Have any recipes to share?

I long for 130.

08-16-2006, 03:27 PM
I had to come up with something for breakfast. I hadn't eaten it much since about 9th grade. Later in the day I would be ravenous and eat anything in sight!
Shakes appealed to me because they're easy. I can even put some in a travel mug and take it to work.
I'm also not very good about fruit so I sneak it in that way.
And the extra protein is a sort of long and convoluted tale ... I'll shorten it up some for you :)
The more I read and learned about slenderness, the more I realised that if you just lose weight at any cost ... you'll lose muscle. But if you want to be attractively slim and be well prepared to stay that way ... you need to protect your muscle and build more. In my reading about weight lifting, I found enough evidence to support increasing my protein intake and powder seemed the easiest way.
A good lean portion of protein at each meal does keep me full longer.
As far as the psyllium fibre goes ... I did find a decrease in regularity as I cut out bready carbs (I don't want one slice ... I want them ALL!) An internist at our little hospital highly recommends that almost everyone should increase their fibre intake. So I toss it in my shake.
Easy is very important to me.

08-16-2006, 03:43 PM
I usually don't eat anything in the morning, I am too busy with the kids/housework so I don't eat until about 12 or 1. Shakes would be a great way to get out of the no breakfast for me. I have been having trouble getting enough calories because I don't eat breakfast.
My normal Diet is :
4 cups of coffee with milk (no sugar)
3 hard boiled eggs
1 small apple
2 pieces of bread
boneless skinless chicken breast
3 oz (about 15) baby carrots
1 cup of grapes.
Night snack

I'm never really hungry on this diet but I am afraid that I'm not getting enough calories.

Thanks for the FitDay address.

I did well yesterday and rounded out the day with 1 piece of pizza and a large salad. So, I am feeling good.

Jeni, I think you should really think about trying to incorporate something for breakfast. Protein Bar or something. Doesn't the coffee tear up your empty stomach.

I missed the bus this mornig by a hair but that just forced me to hoof it down to work. I made it to the campus before the next bus did so I have started off my day right.

I started taking Fish Oil supplements last night to boost my Omega 3. My prenatal had them in them but when Oliver turned 1, I stopped taking them and opted for a cheaper multi-vitamin.

So so far today:
1 scrambled egg
1 hashbrown
1 Diet Coke
20 minutes of walking:running:

Havea great day,

08-17-2006, 12:38 PM
Way to go on the walk to work!! (Even if it was unintentional.) I only have a problem if I drink a triple shot latte, regular coffee doesn't do anything. My Husband and I were talking about me trying to eat breakfast I think I might start with a protein shake or a smoothie. My brother-in-law is big on Spirotein(sp) It is a protein shake from GNC.
I make sure that I take a Multi-vitamin, but I am not good at taking pills for a long period of time.
What type of work do you do? I am a cook in a family owned fastfood restraunt, it isn't glamorous but I stay at home with my kiddos during the day and work 5-10; I am changing my shift though so I can make a little extra $$ for Christmas and so I can join a Gym. It also makes if VERY hard to stay on a diet.

08-17-2006, 03:12 PM
Jeni, I love to cook and bake and fantasize about quiting my job and opening a bakery. You job must be like an alcoholic being a bartender. It must be hard to resistthe food.

I am a research scientist. I work in a lab that studies prostate cancer. I like it but am ready for a change. I have been considering making a move to nursing school. I joke that my name is going to have the whole alphabet behind it when I retire.

It is great you get to stay at home with the kids most of the time. My job is fairly flexible so I come and go as I please and am able to be home by 3:00. Not a bad gig. After I had my son, I realized I loved everything about being pregnant and think I would love to be a labor and delivery room nurse.

I have tried a few Spiroleana (sp) shakes. They would not be something I would want to eat everyday but I think adding protein powder to a smoothy may be the way to go.

So so far today:
1 scrambled egg
1 hashbrown
1 Diet Coke
1 can of tuna
1 tomato
5 whole wheat/flaxseed crackers
1 Diet Coke
20 minutes of walking

08-17-2006, 03:46 PM
I'm debating on going back to school too. I have a BA in cultural Antrhopology, I would like to get a social work or human resources degree but everytime I put in the figures, after paying for day care I would still need to work a second job to make ends meat. Right now we are doing okay, just not enough for the extras.
It is hard to stay away from the food. I normally am there during dinner so I just make something there (And believe me we do not do healthy at all!) All week I have been taking my food with me and I have been doing great.
But one of my goals is to not eat at work. I am working a 10 day stretch right now cause the other cook is on vacation. . .I have resisted 3 days, 7 to go.

18 minutes on my exercise bike
15 minutes Pilates

08-17-2006, 07:12 PM
Hey check out my Avatar!
How is your day going, Amanda? I am just sitting back I had lunch and my snack! Now my Kids are asleep and I am going to do more pilates!

08-18-2006, 12:29 PM
Good Morning Amanda! How is your day going? Mine is just getting started. Have a great day, Keep up the good work!

08-18-2006, 12:47 PM
Morning Jeni, sorry I didn't post earlier. I have been running around trying to get things straight to take an Anatomy class this fall. The university will pay up to 6 credit hours so I am taking advantage of it.

You kids are adorable. Are they both red heads? I need to update Olivers photo. He looks so different.

I am doing well today. I almost slipped off but recovered with a good slap in the face via the internet. Since it is Friday, I splurged and purchased a breakfast sandwich, well while I was eating one half I decided to look up on the company's website to see if they had the nutrition information. I am glad I did. If I would have eaten the whole thing I would have consumed around 600 calories and like 48 grams of fat!!!!!!!!!So, I finished my half and took the other half down the hall to the stapping mail boy.

I am hoping to get off early and go on a walk before I pick up Oliver. Any plans for the weekend? I think we are going to finaly finish painting our living room and maybe go down a state park.

Did you eat breakfast today?

Have a great day,

08-18-2006, 02:43 PM
I had OJ enriched with calcium, vitamins A, D! Not a real breakfast but it is something. I think I am going to get protein shakes if I can find any that are ready made.
Good for you on the Anatomy class! And the Breakfast sandwich.... Convienence comes at a price.
Fridays are bad days for me because my husband likes to bring home Lunch, I might let him bring me home a Subway sandwich or salad, but chances are I will stick to my eggs and toast for lunch.
Makenna's hair is dark red, Tommy's is stawberry blonde. I am partial to red heads, my husband and my best friend both have Red hair.
Have a good day!

08-21-2006, 10:09 AM
Good Monday Morning Jeni,

Sorry, I didn't post over the weekend. I forgot my password. I usually post at work and have it so it remembers my password. Saturday night I was stumped.

I had an o.k. weekend but think I went a little heavy on the salt. I feel I retained a bit of fluid and need to flush it out of my system.

I had a good hour mommy only walk on Sunday morning. It was crazy humid here so it was no fun but it did start my week out right.

This weeks goals:
excersize at least 20 minutes a day
drink at minimum 64 oz but goal is 90.

Sunday : 1 hour walk :running:
Monday: 20 minute walk to work :running:

 8 oz water so far today

08-21-2006, 01:14 PM
Good morning, Amanda! I have started drinking protein shakes in the morning. It seems to help me get/stay motivated to do anything. I had a big test this weekend, I worked both days 8 hours. This is such a test of my will power. I didn't eat anything from work I stuck to my guns! I did however celebrate my Anniversary on Friday by drinking Tequila:) This was NOT a part of my diet :) I had a great workout on Sunday, 20 minutes on my bike 20 minutes on my weights and 20 minute pilates! This is not a normal workout for me but it was great!

08-21-2006, 02:25 PM
:carrot: Good for you staying on track at work:carrot:

I didn't know tequila was the official drink for 5 year anniversaries. I personaly hate it even hiden in chilly sweetness. I do like beer and wine occasionaly but if I am looking to go off track I usually head for sweets. We had hamburgers last night and I so wanted to grill marshmellows and make samores afterwards. I didn't because I know I can't eat just one.

What brand of protein shake did you get? I had one a few weeks ago that had Spiroleana (sp?) mixed in and it was bearable but I think I needed to get it colder.

I am thinking about buying a blender at Costco, they had a deal on a nice Hamilton Beach one. I know my husband would be a smoothy making fool if I got it.

Almost 33 oz of water down so far today

08-21-2006, 03:01 PM
i'm right there with you. i weigh a bit more than you so i'd like to get down to what you are--around 180. i just had my baby girl two months ago so i'm 15 pounds lighter than when i first got pregnant. i'm going to try the fitday thing, and also bring out my old weight watchers books and try to get those 60 pounds off. i work for a dr so i can weigh myself here.

08-21-2006, 03:16 PM
Amanda: Tequila is my drink of choice. I dont like beer, and wine is okay but it gives me a headache. I don't drink much anymore (compared to when I was 21-25 years old) But it was a nice end to a night at work. I am taking thurs, fri, sat, sun off this week to celebrate. We usually do a mini vacation but I think this time we are going to stay at home and turn off the phone and just be a family. I got Edge soy protein powder (chocolate) from Wal-mart. I like it. I always hated the blender but now I am using it every day.

Kenziesmom-Congrats on the new baby! I found fitday to be a great tool, I record everything in my diary and I check to make sure I am getting enough vitamins and minerals with my diet. I take a multi-vitamin along with it, yesterday was the first day though that almost all of my recommended nutrients came from my diet!

08-21-2006, 03:37 PM
also great job on the water Amanda!!!:)

08-21-2006, 10:38 PM
Hello and Welcome!!

Good Luck on your weight loss!! You can do it!!

08-22-2006, 12:13 PM
Good Morning!

Not feeling great today and I am not sure why. Last night I don't know what happened. I started getting abdominal cramps and cold chills. I didn't know what was going on. I was also very blotted. This morning the symptoms have gone awy for the most part but I feel as if I was hit in the stomach ot that I did 100 crunches. I usually have cramping around ovulation time but this was ridiculous. I think my neighbors cheap white wine is to blame.

So because of not feeling great I was below my lower limit of calories. I am trying to stay around 1500-1700 a day. If I go below that I am just tired.

I saw some different protein shkes at my grocery store yesterday and was surprised to see that Kashi make one. I love Kashi cereal and I think I may try it if I get a blender.

Welcome Kenzeesmom! Congrats on the little girl. I found the first months post partum the hardest in so many ways. I wouldn't eat enough then I would gorge because I hadn't eated and there never seemed time to excersize or meal plan. I think if I have a second one I'll know what to expect and be much more on the ball. That is kind of why I want to loss the weight now so in a year we can try for #2.

Short 15 minute walk this am but if I get my energy back I think I'll take the babe and the dog for a long stroller walk this afternoon.

Pumping myself with fluids and protein today.

Jeni, does you little girl like the Wiggles? We are going to the concert on Thursday. Olive loves them and it is the only way for us to get him into his carseat is to promise to put them on.

Have a great day,

08-22-2006, 12:31 PM
Well, if your not up to walking, don't force it you don't want to make yourself worse!! There are so many protein shakes to choose from, my mom is using spirotein(sp). It is a good breakfast for me.
Makenna used to love the Wiggles but now we only catch it on tv from time to time. They entertain Tommy in the morning if we aren't quite ready to wake up yet (although he prefers Blues Clues). Makenna now watches Dora the Explorer or any disney Movie (she LOVES Sleeping Beauty).

08-24-2006, 09:47 AM
Hi Jeni,
I have been so sick the last 2 days. :( Very exhausted and achey all over, fever. It was like the flu and I think if I didn't have an immune system made of steel it may have turned into something like that. I have a lingering headache today but I think it is from the medicine I took.

I am pumping myself with fluids today and fruit to try and flush out any toxins.

Eating wise, I have been doing well. I do think I need to keep my calories more towards the 1700 mark to combat feeling rundown. I don't see how people go on restricted 1200 calorie diets.

I have been very good about my snacking. I have also manged to walk 3 times this week despite feeling like dog poo. My official wiegh in is tomorrow so hopefully I will have moved the ticker.

How is it going for you?

08-24-2006, 12:39 PM
You poor thing! I hate being sick. I think you are doing a good thing by getting plenty of fluids! I can't imagine trying to stay an a low cal diet after being sick. I am doing well exercising, but I have been tempted so much the last two days. I started my Mini-vacation today four days off. I am going to work on potty training my daughter. My husbands grandmother is gave us an aniversary present of babysitting the kids so we can go out. I am not sure which day it will be, but the place we are going to dinner is a steakhouse. I am trying to stay away from red meat, but it is sooooo Good. I may order my primerib and cut it in thirds (the smallest one is HUGE) and eat only a third. The meal comes with a huge serving of veggies so I am going to focus on eating those first. It is going to be hard to stay on my diet this weekend. But, as long as I get in my workouts I will be happy.

08-25-2006, 08:58 AM
It is great having family nearby to babysit. It makes going out so much more doable when you know You will not have to pay for babysitting.

I think cutting it into thirds is a great idea. My weakness would be the baked potato. I love butter and sour cream.

I lost 1 pound this week so I am happy considering how crappy I felt. I swear all I want to to was eat a whole tub of Kozy Shack Chocolate pudding.

Despite feeling like death I went to the Wiggles concert with Oliver last night. It was fun except that Greg was sick and not there. But you barely noticed and I am sure Oliver didn't. What a workout they must get from performing that show. I could not take my eyes off of one of the backup dancers. He appeared to have snorted several lines of coke before the show.

Off to finish up some work and take rest of the day off,

08-25-2006, 02:04 PM
I honestly think Jeff looks a little like he's on something on the tv show.

Good job on the pound lost!!! It is such a great feeling when we weigh ourselves and it goes down, not UP!!!

I didn't get a workout at all yesterday because Tommy would not take a nap! But I know one day off won't Kill me. We are going to go for a walk in a little while as a family! I also overdid the Cranberry juice instead of water yesterday.

Tonight I am going out so I am going to do extra workouts since Will is here. Have a great weekend!

Hi Jeni, and welcome from another Washingtonian! Glad you are here!

You got it with the move more/eat less being the way to do it... except personally I change it to eat RIGHT and move your butt.

08-26-2006, 11:38 AM
Hi Jeni:

Nice to meet you. I've lost 58 lbs (21 to go) following the USDA Food Pyramid and working out with cardio and strength training. I lose approx. 5lbs per month. I finally understand the importance of calories in vs. calories out.

Best of luck to you!

08-26-2006, 01:17 PM
Thanks for the welcome ladies. I am doing well and I am going to stick with it! My short term goal is to look good in my family pics in November, but overall I want to lower my risk for diabetes. I had gestational diabetes with both pregnancies and after 10 months my blood sugar still is borderline. So with the right diet and exercise I should get my blood sugar back into the normal range.
