Food Talk And Fabulous Finds - What one food do you eat more than any other?

It just occured to me today, as I was cutting up vidalia onions to put into my pita sammich, than I eat onions more than I eat anything else. I eat them almost every day, I'd say at least 6 days a week. Raw, cooked, it doesn't matter, I'll eat them. And I eat them with just about everything. On sandwiches, in salads, wrapped up in tortillas, in stir-frys - and I even make lowfat baked onion rings. I go through a LOT of onions, I'm constantly having to buy more because I eat so many of them.

So I was curious, is there one food you find yourself eating every day? Or close to it?

Another food I eat regulary is whole wheat pitas. I love stuffing them with yummy things :)

Before I started my current plan (which has pre-set menus), it was definitely peanut butter. I would buy the all-natural kind without sodium (the ONLY ingredient is peanuts), and I would use it in smoothies, banana and peanut butter wraps, sandwiches...

My breakfast cereal (Flax Plus from Trader Joe's). I eat it at least four days a week.

I also put onions in just about everything I cook. Can't eat them raw, though--they give me terrible heartburn.

I eat a green salad with dinner almost every day. In the summer that includes cherry tomatoes and cucumber. And I eat tomatoes in a lot of other dishes as well (sandwiches, pasta, cassoroles, soups).

I have non-fat yogurt with wheat germ for a snack almost every day.

Finally, we eat a lot of chicken. Probably at least twice a week. Sometimes I probably make chicken for dinner 7 nights a week. It's versatile and I prepare it lots and lots of different ways, so we don't get bored with it.

Oh my gosh, yes, tomatoes is another food I eat a lot of. Especially in summer because I grow my own. I've eaten tomatoes just about every day for the last several weeks.

I eat cottage cheese almost everyday. It has lots of nice protein and it goes with almost everything ... fruit, vegetables ... I've even had it on sandwiches.

I like putting cottage cheese on baked potatoes :)

Never been too much into the peanut butter thing, although I do occasionally get a craving for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I eat a LOT of frozen fruit. Peaches, blackberries, strawberries, or mixed berries with yogurt or by themselves are part of my day. I love them because fresh fruit goes bad SO quickly, and these dont. I still eat a lot of fresh fruit as well, like apples, mangoes, kiwis, bananas, etc.

I guess that isnt one food, but its one group of food. :D

Ok how do you make your low fat onion rings?

Here's a copy of my post re: the onion rings to another member who asked me for the recipe :)

I don't have the exact nutrition info, but I got this 'recipe', actually, from someone else here on 3FC. Here is the actual copied recipe. How I calculate calories, basically, is I just count the calories for each ingredient. The whole onion, the 2 tbsp. flour, the bread crumbs, etc. I usually only end up using about 1/4 cup of bread crumbs because bread crumbs are so high in calories. So here it is, as it was posted

I love making these and dipping them in ketchup! I wish I could remember who posted this recipe, but kudos to them because they are wonderful. And it's important to leave them in double rings because if you don't, they'll turn almost 'papery' from the heat of the oven because they'll be too thin.

2 large onions -- 1/4" sliced, leave in double rings

2Tbsp. flour

1/4 tsp. salt

pepper to taste

Mix the onion rings with the above ingredients in a zip-top bag until rings are coated. Then dip rings into 1/4 egg substitute (or whites) and then into 1/2 cup bread crumbs until coated. Arrange on baking sheet. Spray tops on rings with non-stick cooking spray and bake at 400 degrees until golden brown.

These turn out so light and crispy you can hardly tell they are healthy!

Linda - I'm definitely going to have to try those onion rings!

One food I eat almost every day is low fat cottage cheese - usually topped with a small container of Dole Tropical Fruit.

I'd say vegetables in general, now. I tend to have 3-4 vegetable dishes that I make, and I rotate them. Most involve spinach, tomatoes, or garlic.

It used to be pastries.

Tomatos, chicken, yogurt. Between those three, it would be difficult to pick one that I eat more of than the other. Just not together ;)

Peas. Every day. I prefer can, but I eat frozen too. And since it's in season, and I get it from local farmers, I've been eating corn on the cob every day. And I usually eat a grapefruit, apple, or banana every day. I used to eat oranges/tangerines every day, but they are too pricey right now. And it's hard to find good ones.

Oh dear... I really don't vary what I eat that much, (never have) so there are a LOT of foods that I eat a LOT of.

Apples, bananas, pears, yogurt, oatmeal, LOTS of vegetables (carrot, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, red pepper, cabbage, onion)

I pretty much have those foods EVERY day. I add other things, for a bit of variety, but that is the basis of my daily food intake.

I have carrots, cucumber slices and sliced red pepper every day. I take it in a little baggie to work to snack on during the day. I eat skim milk with All-Bran and raspberries pretty much every day for breakfast before hopping in the shower. And I love yogurt, I probably have it nearly every day.

I also put parsley in nearly everything I cook. I can't taste it much, but I always think "Yay, Vitamin K!" when I add it to something.

LOL, penpal. I usually ask for "extra spicy" and the waiters look at me like I'm crazy....I cook Thai food a lot at home too, and when my ex-BF was still living with me he accused me of trying to kill him with chiles.

They say that eating hot chiles will raise your metabolism for up to 3 hours afterwards and I think it must be true, because I never lost as fast before I started eating this stuff. A lot of it has really healthy ingredients, too.

Garlic and whole wheat bread (but not garlic ON whole wheat bread :P). I put garlic in almost EVERYTHING.

I used to eat a lot of low-fat popcorn, but I burned myself out on it. I ate it nearly every day (sometimes twice a day) for around 3 months.

Ooh, I'll second chicken! I sometimes make it myself for dinner, or I often have it in a low-calorie frozen meal for lunch.

Also, ground turkey. I didn't realize until recently how much of it I eat! I eat turkey breakfast sausages, put turkey sausage in my spaghetti sauce, cook ground turkey with salsa, chili powder, onion, and garlic for a Mexican-ish salad or wrap, eat turkey burgers instead of beef...

Oh my gosh, I love those turkey burgers. I buy the Honeysuckle brand (I think that's the one) pre-made turkey burgers and they're soooooo good.

Daggone it, now I want one. I'm having one tomorrow for lunch, lol.

it's not food, but drink - milkshake.
chocolate milkshake
vanilla milkshake
banoffee milkshake
raspberry milkshake

I drink waaaayyyy too much milkshake.

today, for example, I've drank 400ml vanilla milkshake, 200ml chocolate milkshake, and 200ml banoffee milkshake

and I'm still wanting more! that's not even that much. I used to go through 2 litres of chocolate milkshake every day. I've cut back a lot but I'm still drinking way too much. I'm totally addicted. I think honestly it's one of my big weightloss pitfalls.

I eat a TON of nut butters. Well, maybe not a TON LOL
But, I would have to say that it's my biggest source of dietary fat. I'm not afraid of fat-I just have to monitor my intake b/c it's so calorically dense!

DeafinlySmart

Xena do you make your own milkshake? You might be able to reduce the calories/fat that way. Do you like smoothies? (not the fast food kind, those pack calories and carbs).

I was that way about chocolate. I ate it every time I went to any store. I was addicted. I started buying alternatives like 40cal fudgcicle and Russel Stover's sugar free chocolate candies. I'm not even eating those anymore. I can handle a little of chocolate but I'm still at the stage where it is easier to say "No" and not have the craving than to risk eating some and start craving it more. Eventually I want to be able to have chocolate occasionally. Right now if I must, I stick to my alternatives but thankfully in general my cravings have calmed down.

I go through phases... sometimes it will be fat free cottage cheese... sometimes 200-calorie turkey sandwiches, sometimes boca burgers, sometimes specific frozen meals like LC eggroll or stuffed cabbage..
Right now... I probably eat chicken everyday. Also I eat a lot of plums and nectarines. And zucchini.
