Question What is the slow down

Hello,

New to this group...i cant believe there is a support group that fits me as well as this one.

My question is, i have pcos/ir...does that make it double hard to lose weight? I just dont get it. I used to eat at least 3400 cals a day...looked and felt like a blob. Now i am eating 1200 for a maximum number (thanks to byetta) but i am not losing hardly anything. I get so frustrated so quickly. I have been dieting for 2 weeks, really diligently watching and recording every morsel that goes into my mouth. I lost 2 pounds the first week and 5 the second week...only to weigh this morning and have gained 2 of the 5 back. What the heck? Its not that time of the month...so what gives? With as much as i weigh...i should have easily kept the total 7 pounds off. I didnt cheat or anything over the weekend...infact i weighed less when i went to bed last night than when i woke up...what is that about?

Back when i lost 100 pounds the first time, i became scale obsessed like this and i had to have my son hide the scale in his room and only let me have it on friday...isnt that nuts! but that is all part of my addictive personality...i am always addicted to something...usually food..but once in a while, when i get fat enough, i change that addiction to weight loss.

Ok, back to my point. What does PCOS/ir do to weight loss effects? Anyone?

Thanks for letting me vent.

PCOS does make weight loss a lot more difficult. Some medications can help a bit but it is still hard. Ever since I started taking BC pills, it has helped a little bit. You also have to make sure you exercise. I also wouldn't rely purely on the scale for your weight loss measurement. The scale is so fickle from day to day depending on how much water you are retaining.

I have PCOS and IR. I take Glucophage 850Mg twice a day. I haven't noticed any difference with this med. My specialist had advised me that with these medical conditions that the weight would come off best using a low-carb approach. Now, I can only speak for myself, but it worked. Good luck to you and whatever plan you choose. He did recommend SBD, but I chose Atkins.

Hi Stacy. I do not have PCOS, but was IR for years before recently being diagnosed as a full blown diabetic. I also take Byetta. I have lost about 14 pounds since starting it six weeks ago, so the weight loss is slow, but seems to be somewhat steady. A low glycemic diet is essential for weight loss. You have to do whatever you can to control the amount of insulin you are putting out. Exercise is really important. I would still be just IR if I had taken this seriously. I find NOTHING lowers my blood glucose levels like exercise. Just a stroll for 20 minutes does wonders. If you are NOT exercising, make THAT your addiction. It will help heal your IR, and promote weight loss. I think you should have your son hide the scale again too. Weighing more than once a week is just setting yourself up for frustration. Weight does vary due to water retention for whatever reason, activity level, what you ate the night before, how late you ate, if you drank a glass of water during the night....once a week gives you a better view of how you are REALLY doing.

I know weight loss with IR, and Metabolic Syndrome, and PCOS is HARD. But, it will help all those conditions, so its worth the time and effort you put into it. I started on this journey six years ago. As you can see, I am not wildly successful. I HAVE learned along the way however, and stuck it out. I hope you have an easier road, and can see the success you want.

Thanks guys,

I am feeling better about it today. I woke up and weighed, of course, and I am happy. Lost 2 more pounds. But i do think i will get my son to hide the scales.

I keep forgetting about exercise being so important especially for PCOS/IR folks. Dang, dang, dang i hate it. But i need to realize that i am not just exercising to lose weight. i get obsessed with how many calories that 20 min walk burnt, how many cals that 20 minutes of pilates burnt...then i fixate on it and say, well see...all that 20 minutes worth of hard work did was burn off that peice of cheese from my sandwich earlier...big whoop. Then i get all disappointed again. I need to look at the whole picture...that 20 minutes didnt just burn that peice of cheese, it raised my metabolism AND got my insulin/sugar balanced etc...i have to convince myself it is more than a slice of cheese, ha ha. And i know it did more than burn that peice of cheese...because on the weeks i exercise i can really see a difference than on the weeks i dont.

Thanks so much for your wisdom ladies.

Stacy

Exercise is my struggle also. I know that it can make a huge difference in how I feel and how my body works but yet most of the time I still have issues getting off the couch. Maybe not thinking about the number of calories burned with exercise but how much more you can do today than previously will help.....

If natural changes are going to make your nuts then definately hide the scale. I track my weight on a weekly basis but started out only weighing once a month. Weightloss unfortunatly is not a straight line.

Good luck and let us know how byetta is working for you!

I am loving the Byetta. It makes me feel like a "normal" person's appetite probably does. I am not starving all the time like i used to. I eat 1/3 of what i did to get full. No nausea like some people have trouble with. I would highly recommend anyone with IR or diabetes at least try it.

It's really funny how PCOS works. I was healthy in high school (weighed at 140) & in 1999 I had a chemical pregnancy that only lasted a few weeks. Well after it ended, I started to gain weight really quick (I gained over 60 lbs in a 4 month period...right before my wedding). Nothing had changed for me either...my eating & exercise habits were the same. Now it's so hard to lose the weight. My RE recommend a low calorie or a low glycemic diet ..... my choice. I did try the 1500 calories diet, but I got pregnant in April (just to miscarry again a few weeks later) & gained the 20 I lost back. I was thinking about trying the 1500 calories again but I might see if the low glycemic diet will work. I've also got a thyroid problem & I'm also IR. I don't take Metformin as it makes me so sick that I can't keep anything down.
