I've been working on a theory since my trip to the grocery store this morning... (stay with me here:dizzy: )

As I was looking for a parking spot near the door I started thinking about how people say you should park far from the entrance when going to a store so you can get in the extra walking. So I parked far away. When I left the store, I started to put the now empty cart between my car and the car next to me like it seems most people in my area do and then realized that doing so is just as bad as trying to park as close to the door as possible. It's the path of least resistance...a.k.a. LAZINESS! I returned the cart to the store.

So then I was thinking about how often I search out the path of least resistance. Usually I use the excuse that it's more efficient. Like trying to carry all the grocery bags from the car to the kitchen at once so I don't have to make 2-3 trips. Or when I make a pile at the bottom of my stairs of things that belong upstairs so I only have to climb the stairs with a load once. Or asking my friend who is headed to the kitchen to get me a refilll on my water since they're already up. Or keeping the portable phone near the couch so I don't have to cross the room to answer it.

The more I think about it, the more examples I come up with. Think of all the "free" exercise I'm giving up! It's not just about parking a long way from the door. It's about stamping out the instinct that is always looking for a reason not to move.

I challenge us all to find ways to take the path of MOST resistance today!

absolutely excellent post.. and it makes a lot of sense too!

Like keeping the garbage polycart right next to the back door, so i dont have to walk back and forth to the alley each time. Or waiting until im done with all the laundry to put away the clothes!

no path of least resistance for me today!!!! :)

I was just thinking about this today!

I still engage in many of the "least resistance" behaviors you mentioned (especially the one about bringing in as many groceries in one trip as possible!), but have made an effort to do less of in since I started this whole process. The nice thing is, it's EASIER to move now that I'm 75 pounds lighter!

So, instead of calling upstairs to ask hubby a question, I GO.
I have started walking up more stairs rather than the elevator.
etc..

This is great! This is one of my biggest faults. I read somewhere that fit people don't do stuff like ask someone to grab something for them... They get up and do it themselves. I do that to my son alot... Go grab this, go grab that. I'm going to try to choose the path of MOST resistance from now on. My body AND my son will be happy!
