General Diet Plans and Questions - Merida # 7-----Is anyone else out there???

07-26-2001, 02:48 PM
Jenny-O sounds like you ae doing very well with your weight loss. I have been checked for thyroid. Since I put on almost all of my excess weight over a three year period that is one of the first things my doc checked. He should have been at my home while I was eating everything in sight. I do agree that people should have their thyroid checked since it can be a souce of weight gain.
However, I do agree with Mrs. Jim (who is always most sensible). Think that you should let your doctor handle it and if needed prescribe the correct medication.

I had my weigh in on Tuesday night (not mandatory) and am now down 62 lbs, which is exactly a 10 lb a month loss. It is a bit quicker than my doctor expected but I have really stepped up the exercise. The 10mg Merida still seems to work for me so I will continue to stick with that.

AmyVictory, you are a young woman, don't worry about your skin sagging. Come into chat and we will all exercise with you.

Hope everyone is doing well. Do check in.

Here's my edit:

Winebrat, sorry I just saw your new thread. I use the name Merida---is anyone else out there??? because a woman " Don't Worry Be Happy" started in and I have not heard from her in ages. Thought I would keep the name in case she ever returned. Skipped right over your new thread. A big congratulations to you. I know you must be so pleased with your weight loss. That's what we have to remember every time we want some goodie.....we have to remember the satisfaction we get from losing the weight.

Hi everyone.
I am having a challenging week - crazy busy with work and the night class I am taking. I am feeling very overwhelmed. Also, haven't been to the gym since I've been so busy and the scale is not budging! I have been stuck at 195 for almost 2 months. I know that it takes wating right and exercising to see success - so I just have to make the time.
Congrats to those of you who are losing! Keep up the good work and hang in there

07-26-2001, 05:51 PM
That's ok, i just a little overly ambitious last night in my fit of insomnia!

Well I guess I need to stop drinking water before my WW meetings, cuz that stupid scale only showed a .2 loss...AHhh well PMS and water will do that!

Ahhh tomorrow's friday!

It's so nice to see everyone doing so well with Meridia. The only people I know are you "online" people that are joining me in this so it is great that we are able to succeed together! I'm so psyched about how great I feel after being on 1500 calories for over 3 months. My mom was convinced that I would get sick, "because I've never been able to eat just 1500 calories for very long before." Well, I'm feeling great and I just keep getting more and more energy. The other day I thought, "it seems so much easier to go up the stairs these days" and then I realized that I've lost as much weight as one of those 5 gallon bottles of water we use on our water dispenser weighs (according to my husband a gallon of water weighs 8 lbs. - I haven't checked but I assume he is right). Anyway, thinking of having to carry around a bottle of water everywhere I go 24-7, no wonder I was tired all of the time! I have another "3 bottles" to go (aka 120 pounds) and I believe I'm gonna get there!

I've recently started doing Jane Fonda's low impact aerobics (yeah, it's old but effective). I like doing the dancing exercises better than the TaeBo so I think I'll be able to stick to this easier!

Good luck to everyone...and keep up the good work!!

Starting weight 308
Current weight 270
Goal weight 150 (or maybe even 135?)

Winebrat, I know it is such a scary time Everytime I hear about a layoff I shudder. It is hard not to eat during times of stress.

Still on the Merida. Now down 65 lbs but lots more to go so I try to stay OP and exercise and drink water

Food is getting much easier to deal with but I have yet to go on vacation so will see how I do with that.

Take care

08-02-2001, 01:43 PM
Yeah...layoffs stink. They're moving EVERYTHING offshore, except sales and finance...eeeeks.

Oh well, I will NOT eat to console myself! :) At least my appetite is down with Meridia. Can't pig out even if I wanted to!

Have weigh in tomorrow...dont' really want to go...but if I haven't gained, then that is a success!

08-05-2001, 03:08 AM
Well, it seems like we are dropping like flies.....whatever that means.

Still on Merida here. Finally hit the 65 lbs lost mark and am very pleased but will be going on vacation and worry thats I will overeat. For me vacation=food. Got to try and change my mindset.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Take care.

Still stuck at 195, I will try to increase the cardio and watch what I put in my mouth this week. Hopefully, I will have a loss to report next time.
Hope everyone is doing well.

08-06-2001, 09:27 PM
Well i've had a lousy couple of weeks...lay offs...relationship issues...
At least i haven't GAINED anything!!!!

I am determined to get back on my horse though.

Hope you are all doing ok!

Hi all,

Your posts give me great hope! I just turned 27 and I now weigh 240 pounds. At my heaviest I was at 307 and my lowest, a couple of years ago, I was down to 188. My doctor just prescribed Meridia for me today.

I've been exercising 6x/week for the past few months (aqua aerobics 3x/week, cardio and weights 3x/week), but I've actually gained weight. No, this is not muscle. This is me with the appetite of linebacker. My appetite has been a problem all my life. It never occurs to me to stop eating until I've absolutely stuffed myself sick.

How long does it take for Meridia to take effect? Days? Weeks? Does Meridia help control your appetite? Does it do it as well as Phen-Fen?

I lost about 60 pounds on Phen-Fen. It was the only time in my life when I felt like I had the appetite of a normal person. Has anyone been on Phen-Fen before, and Meridia now?

I'm willing to do the work. I've done it before, and I have the exercise part down. I'm just hoping Meridia will give me the help I need to control my eating.

Any advise/words of wisdom are welcome and appreciated!!!

Jean Marie
!Keep hope alive! :)

Welcome Jean Marie, glad you posted. On the info sheet it says that Merida can take two/three weeks to work. I found that it worked faster than that for me

However, others who have taken Phen Phen, have not been as happy with Merida. From what I know PP was like speed (and therefore dangerous). Merida works on the brain and increases the seritomum level thereby making you feel better.

Someone on this thread said it best. She no longer thought of food all the time and it has worked the same for me. When trying to lose in the past, I would wake up in the a.m. thinking about what I could not have that day, that week, that weekend, my whole life and then I would get depressed and eat. Somehow Merida has taken that away from me. I am no longer obsessed with food. The ads do say as much by pointing out that you are in control with Merida. For me those ads have proven to be right

Again, given you are a former PhenFen user, you may not find it helps as much as you would like. Try it and hang in there. Please post again and let us know how you are doing.

Hey Jean Marie!

Welcome...I wasn't on Phen-Fen, but I was on Redux, which is a derivative of the Fen portion. Redux was similar to Meridia in that it was a Seratonin ReUptake inhibitor which works on the appetite centers of the brain, but it was a different class of drug.
As an ex-Redux user, I find that Meridia is different but I don't think worse / better, whatever.

I'd been struggling for ages on a plateau after losing 20 lbs, and I felt like I was ALWAYS hungry. Meridia helps me get a handle on WHY and WHAT I am eating, so I can make better choices with my body...I still do Weight Watchers though, I think the support is helpful...

Good luck and keep in touch!

~Down another 2 this week, yippee!!~

Hi Nikolas and Winebrat,

Thanks for replying! I did some more research and went to another doctor. This doctor specializes in weight loss and she recommended Bontril. Bontril is similar to the Phentermine part of Phen-Fen (which is somewhat similar to Meridia.)

I started the Bontril yesterday. I went out to dinner last night with my boyfriend, and *I* actually suggested splitting an entree between us. After dinner with my he ordered us dessert (something I would normally do). I only ate a few bites. We actually left with a good portion of dessert uneaten!!!! This NEVER would have happened before.

The bad news is I didn't sleep last night - at all, I mean not even a cat nap. The brochure says sleeplessness is normal for the first few days. So, I'll see how it goes. I'm one who needs a good night sleep, so if the sleeplessness continues, I'll have to have something changed.

Again, thank you both for posting responses! Good luck with your weight loss! I appreciate the support.

Jean Marie:angel:

08-13-2001, 02:28 PM

good luck to you on Bontril! I agree, it's the control that I like about Meridia...

OK so thank GOODNESS i'm down another 2lbs...I was getting a bit annoyed after a few weeks of wavering, but I guess it's true that your body takes time to adjust to weight loss...well, i'm at the 1/3 mark and i'm off to Lake Tahoe for a family vacation. Hmm THAT should be interesting!!!!!!

Have a great week all!

08-14-2001, 10:11 PM
Jean-Marie, yes do let us know how you do on bontril. Are there any adverse common side effects besides the sleeplessness? I guess there are a lot of weight loss meds out there. My doc only offered Merida or Xenical.

I have been away on a mini-vacation. Unfortunately (and I was taking Merida) I had a slip that turned into a slide. For me it takes a lot of energy to think ahead about what I am going to eat. It takes even more energy, strength, whatever to make good food choices when eating out. None the less, I am back on track and don't feel like beating myself up like I would have a year ago. Thanks, I think, to the Merida, I had less trouble getting back into my routine. Was actually thrilled to go food shopping today cause it puts me in control.

WineBrat, you are doing well. A Lake Tahoe vacation sounds wonderful.

Take care

Hi everyone.
I am in the middle of cramming for my final exam tonite. After this, I am done my degree once and for all. I am so looking forward to that!
I plan to move into high gear for weight loss and resume my eating at 1500 calories and exercising 5x a week. My goal is to lose 10 more pounds before Oct. 20 (my wedding)
Hope you are doing well. Looking forward to posting more frequently!!:)

Hi Ladies...been tied up at work with lots of projects and no time to post. Sorry to hear about layoffs--they are happening where I work as well. Not the first time either.

I had minimal success (3-4 lbs per month) with 10mg of Meridia, so the doc put me on 15 mg. I had no side effects with the 10mg dosage, but with the larger dosage I see changes in sleeping. I know insomnia is a side effect. I can fall asleep OK, but wake up 1-2 times per night. I've only been on the higher dosage for a few days; hopefully things settle down. If the scale doesn't start to move a bit faster, the doc will likely discontinue it, as it has slightly raised by BP. I've definitely seen a difference in night-time eating, which was the worst for me. Hopefully the scale will begin to budge.

take care

Checking in.

Catmum, why do you think that you have only had minimal sucess? Do you think that the Merida is not curbing your hunger enough? I also find it interesting that everyone who has posted to this board has had some negative side effects from the 15mg. My next doctor's appoinment is at the end of Sept. and I was thinking of I am afraid to.

Got weighted in tonight. I am now at 70lbs lost since the last week in January. The Merida has helped but again it is also the exercise ( I do so almost every day). I did take a mini vacation and gained 5 lbs----it did not take much eating to gain that amount but it took me a week to get rid of it.

Frosty, do tell us a bit about your wedding. How many bridesmaids, where are you getting married etc etc. Love weddings.

WineBrat sounds like you are moving right along. Glad you are having sucess also.

Take care everyone.

Catmum - I hope the 15 mg works out for you as you want it to. I would be cautious of wanting to lose too much too fast - 4 pounds in one month seems like a reasonable amount of weight to lose and more importantly to keep off!

Nikolas - thanks for asking about my wedding. As I mentioned it is in 2 months. We are getting married at a beautiful historical park in Calgary - the setting is absolutely stunning! Our reception will be held in a turn of the century (1900's) style hotel. My fiance is scottish and plays the bagpipes so this will definately be a big part of our day. Originally, we were planning a very small wedding to be held Dec. 29 in Banff (canadian rockies) however, we had to change to a bigger location to accomodate all the friends and family that "couldn't wait for our wedding". Now there are 180 people!
We are having our parents as our attendants (too tough to choose from our group of friends). My dress is a beautiful simple gown in a stunning champagne color. I had a tiara and veil made to match the gown. My flowers are blue curiousa roses ( a stunning mauve color). Most likely, I'll post a picture after the big event.

By the way congrats on losing 70 pounds!!! How much further do you want to go?

08-24-2001, 10:33 PM
Frosty, your wedding arrangements sound absolutely lovely. Think it is a great idea to have your parents as attendants. Nice for them and nice for friends that possibly may have thought they were overlooked if not picked for bridal party. Very thoughtful.

You must post a picture. Are you going anyplace for a honeymoon?

I have 100+ lbs to lose but have not yet set a goal weight. Think I will know by the way my body looks rather than by what the scale says. I am exercising to help that process along but as I have said before, believe I will need surgery on my stomach to make it go away.

Take care

Well, we have either lost all of our weight or are suffering from Merida side effects. Figured I would post quickly and this will go to top of pile.....Hope some of you are still out there.

Hi everyone,

I've been coming to 3fc for a number of months now, mostly to the Calling all Canadians thread. I was on Meridia for a month, and then had to deal with my mother's death and went off it for the summer. I restarted today. I was really pleased to find a Meridia thread!

I'm on 10 mg and it seems to do the trick for me. Even on that dose, sleeping can be a problem (waking up all night long). However, I've been battling post-baby and post car accident weight for about 7 years now, and it's time to do something about it! I should own shares in Weight Watchers by now for all the time's I've re-registered! So I decided to try this route.

I anyone using the resources available at the phone number we're given with the medication? I anything helping anyone else?? I need to get exercising much more regularly and eating better. Looking forward to spending part of this journey with you all!

nice to hear from you julkat. Seems like everyone has gone away. I am still on Merida but have gained some weight on both of my mini vacations. Hope by the time I see the doctor again, I will be at 75 lbs lost

I am going to ask him to give me a script for five 5mg pills, so I can try them with the 10s. I have been on the Merida since last week in January and have been feeling more hungry in the past month or so. So many people have mentioned that they have had side effects. The only side effects I have experienced on the 10mg is dry mouth.

I do hope we have not lost everyone.

Julcat, there is a live chat here which you may or may not find enjoyable. I have only gone on at night but it helps keep me from going to the kitchen. Stop by if you can.

09-07-2001, 02:44 PM
Hi Nikolas,

Glad to hear that you aren't gone also - I wondered if my message was going into a black hole!

Good luck on the 15mg. I find that the 10 works if I want it to work, but that I can still easily overeat on it if I want to. E.g. last night we had pizza for dinner, and I ate two small pieces and felt pretty satisfied...then the kids went to bed and I wasn't feeling particularly well (have an ear infection) so I ate two more pieces. I wish I wasn't able to do that so easily and was thinking that maybe the 15mg would help. (Staying out of the kitchen would help too, I know!! :^:

Have you really lost 75 lbs on Meridia?? What else have you been doing to make this happen?

09-07-2001, 11:20 PM
julkat, I chuckled when I read what you wrote. "the 10mg works if you want it to work" That is soooooooo true. When I was on vacation I continued to take the Merida however I could still eat and eat. However, even before vacation, I had noticed that I was thinking about food a whole lot more, therefore that is why I am considering the increase in dosage.

Prior to our Labor Day weekend vacation, I had lost 71 lbs and gained about six back. I will see doctor the last week in Sept and am trying to arrive with 75 lbs gone

But I have lost the weight with the help of Merida. Somehow, and this was put the best by another poster, the Merida stops me from having "food thoughts". When I used to try to "diet", I would wake up and the first thing I thought about were the things I could not eat. Those types of thoughts would last all day and all night long, till at some point, in a day, a week, a month I would have to eat eat eat. I am also in a behavior modification group that is lead by a psychologist and I exercise daily (well almost daily). I am trying to develop new habits and just trying to take it a day at a time. If i slip, I don't say "Ok, I've blown it so now I can eat." I just let it go and begin again. And I don't beat myself up.

Hope you too will have success. It is so easy to eat at night when you are just "hangin". I try to stay busy, don't watch as much television because I know I am weakest at night.

Stay in touch and let me know how you are doing.
