Default best butter substitute?

What is a good tasting, low calorie butter substitute w/no hydrogenated oils?
I've read that Smart Balance Light is good. Is this true? Any others really good?
TIA!!!!

The Smart Balance is great, I love it. I try and squeeze a teaspoon of it in every day on something for the monounsaturated fats.

I also use the fat-free butter sprays. I Can't Believe It's Not Butter makes one and so does Parkay, they're both good. I use it on mashed potatoes, vegetables, biscuits, things like that.

has anyone found either of those sprays here in Canada?

I'm so frustrated reading about all these amazing-sounding foods, and then not being able to find them in my Canadian Superstores! I don't really have the time to research grocery stores

has anyone tried the new Becel Topping & Cooking Spray?

You can get 2 sprays here in Edmonton, Safeway and IGA both carry the Becel Spray, it is in the margarine section and I have found the ICBINB Spray at Sobeys in Donsdale and at Save on Foods on Kingsway Avenue. I have used both sprays and they taste the same to me, I like them a lot which surprised me they are excellent on vegetables but not so good on popcorn.

I have only ever used Pam fat free cooking spray. But in my recent quest to become truly honest with my food diary, I'm trying to figure out how to log it into Fitday.

Pam says for a one-third of a second spray, there's no calories, no fat, no nothing. Now I know for a fact that I definitely use it for longer than 1/3 of a second! The only info I can find is that for one second, it's 7 calories. But what happens to fat, protein & carbs? Anyone got any ideas?

Do you think the products mentioned above better reflect the nutritional data?

And one final question, do you think it's better to just come clean and use real oil?

Thanks!

I like smart balance light also. Good taste and melts well. Don't confuse it with Smart Beat because that one doesn't melt well at all.

Brummel and Brown is amazing. Melts like butter and only 45 calories per tablespoon. It's made with Yogurt which is sweet.

Careful with some of the spreads. They can be labeled as trans fat free, but actually can contain hydrogenated oils. Brummel and Brown is one of them. I love the stuff, but it is in there. The FDA rule is things can have less than .5 g trans fats per servings and are allowed to use trans fat free label on the packages. I even found hydrogenated oils in my molly mcButter powder, for heavens sakes!

i think (but i'm italian and maybe i'm partisan)that the most healthy choice to substitute butter is extravirgin oil...
it's has a great taste, has got only good fats and a lot of good horganic quality...
you can tell it's has too much calories but on the long term i think using extravirgin oil instead of strange/chemical substitute is healtier...
it's not only a matter of calories, it's a matter of health

"I can't believe its not butter" has a spread thats FAT FREE, NO TRANS FATs, and only 5 calories per tablespoon. I use it and it tastes just liek butter, the only problem is, you cant use it in baking. It will not absorb well in dough or bread. Its just a spread, and it it doesnt melt into bread (it stays on top of it). It is rather creamy and satifying though, for 5 calories each tablespoon i'm not complaining!
