Hi. For some unknown reason I bought tofu at the grocery store the other day. I have never even tried it...it was an impulse buy! Help...now it's in my fridge and I have no idea what to do with it???? Suggestions please. It is the extra-firm type.

I use it in stir fires, add it to chili, make a great chocolate protein brownie. Here's a site from one of the manufacturers with loads of recipes.

What type did you buy? hard or soft? Each is best for different things. The hard is good for stir fries, soft is good for shakes and dips.

The thing to remember about tofu is that it doesn't have much of a (good) flavor by itself. It takes on the flavors of what it's cooked with. Check out the recipees mentioned. There are tons on the internet, and most of the tofu makers have a website with recipes also.

Have fun experimenting with new foods.

I would start with crumbling it and add it to something that has a strong flavor (a chili, pasta sauce etc.). You can also marinate it and then bake on a baking sheet. It's a great vegetarian protein so be willing to experiment. The silken kind is also great for salad dressing (blend it with diced scallion or chunks of cucumber).

i think tofu is good marinated and then either grilled or baked. cubed, it's good in salads or stirfrys-- sliced, it's good in a sandwich or wrap. i'll share my favorite tofu / tempeh marinade, but you should really check out some of the threads in the 'veggie chicks' forum-- great info!
This works for the type of tofu you bought (extra-firm)
fave tofu / tempeh marinade
spoonful of natural peanut butter or tahini
squirt of siraccha or sambal (or any kind of hot sauce)
few dashes of each-
soy sauce / tamari / braggs liquid aminos, cider vinegar or rice wine vinegar, molassas or honey, sesame oil, fish sauce
tb or so of sesame seeds

mix it all together and pour over your prepared tofu (pressed & sliced or cubed). marinate for at least 30 minutes, stirring frequently. grill or bake to taste and serve in salad or w veggies and rice.

way to go trying out tofu!!! good luck

hello! I use extra firm in making Mabo Tofu. You can find the mix in an asian grocery store. You add meat to it (or imitation, if you want) and just pour the mix over it. Its very good, though I don't know about nutrition info...its been a while since I had it last.

Other thing, I'm a little wierd, but regular/firm tofu with soysauce and A-1 steak sauce is really good. Sometimes I eat it with ranch dressing, but that's more of an aquired taste. ;)

According to the package it is extra-firm.Make sure you are feeding a lot of ppl:

Saute tofu in frying pan. When it's cooked (about 5-10 min) add, 1-2 beaten eggs & salsa & keep stirring. When it's done you're done!
