Talking Steel Magnolias -- #48

Good Afternoon, Flowers! It is a 'damp - cold' kind of day in my neighborhood. I've been going through gifts and putting them away. We had a nice day yesterday: nine adults, two babies, and a lively two and three year old to keep things interesting. Poor Kolby has infection in both ears and went from being happy to crying in the blink of an eye. He also has tooth #4 ready to push through. The first group of my mom, sister, and her husband left about 4, then we did another round of gift opening. It was after 8 when the kids and grandkids pulled out. Bob helped me put the house back together and I regrouped leftovers into smaller containers while he sorted through bags/boxes/wrapping paper to make sure nothing got thrown away that shouldn't have. We finally sat down about 9:30 and I just couldn't stay awake so gave up and went to bed. Another Christmas has come and gone. *sigh*

Gloria -- How nice to see you today! It's nice that your daughters live close enough for you to celebrate birthdays and holidays. I had to at the mental picture of the OR staff singing 'Happy Birthday' and the patient waking up! I know what you mean about being tired after the day's festivities!

I have a load of laundry going so need to get it in the dryer and start another. Have a nice 'rest of the day' and a terrific Tuesday tomorrow.

Just a quick peek in as I am bushed. We got home this morning, but since Jack and I together won $2300 at the casino over the weekend, we went on a spending spree today getting stuff we desperately needed for the condo like a new garbage disposal, new electric blanket, new printer that konked out on us, a jazzy new iron and I even got a pretty computer desk that goes wonderfully in my kitchen.

Hope everyone had a super holiday. My grandson was such a hoot. They came down on Sat afternoon to have Christmas with us and I asked him what he had been doing all day before they left to come down. He said, {{{SIGH}}} "Well, I have been cleaning house all day so that tonight Santa doesn't trip in our house!" My dd told me that in his class they had a discussion about Christmas traditions and when he was ask what his family traditions were he told his class "We go to the casinos."

I need to go and get some laundry folded. Talk to you all in the morning!

Good Morning, Flowers! It is so foggy here and according to the TV we have zero visibility. Duh! I need to make a run to pick up prescriptions and milk but otherwise I am staying home. It's 32 degrees and we are supposed to have freezing drizzle later this afternoon into the evening. I was hoping for a sunny day!

'Gma' -- Welcome home! You were missed while you were gone and it was too quiet here. It sounds like you had a good time! I had to at T's telling his class about going to the casinos!

I need to get moving and get something accomplished today. I feel so lazy this morning for some reason. Bob talked about taking the tree down but it seems like we just put it up. He had to go to work today so I should do some much need ironing too.

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning gals! You would think it was spring here. We woke up to temps in the 60's. I don't know how long it will last, but I am sure going to be happy while it does.

I am getting stuff back to normal except the computer desk is laying against the living room wall in parts until Jack can put it together this weekend. Our stupid dishwasher was full of water this morning when I emptied it so I think we have a clogged hose and Jack is going to have to go in and try and unclog it when he gets home tonight or I am going to be doing dishes by hand. He did get my new disposal in and that is great. It is funny how we seem not to be able to do without our conveniences, huh?

Jean: You know, my kids seemed to be more prone to ear infections when they cut teeth so maybe that is poor Kolby's trouble. Poor little one. Hope he is feeling better now. Sounds like you guys have got some cold weather your way. Did you get any snow yesterday?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas with friends and family. We are hoping to go to Indiana for Christmas next year as Thomas wants to go. He will probably change his mind before then.

Well, gotta get cleaned up to go to the {{{commissary, shudder}}} and get some grub before the New Year's Eve shopping crowd get in there. We are staying home for nye as I am scared to be out on the roads with the drunks.

Have a great day!

Good Afternoon, Flowers! I just typed a post, hit the wrong key and POOF, it was gone! Nuts! Oh well, I have nothing but time today so here goes. It's a cloudy, damp-cold day in my neighborhood. I am so ready for some sunshine! I've begun to gather Christmas decorations to a central location to be put away when I undo the tree. We usually leave that up until New Year's but for some reason I'm ready to pack it away for another year.

'Gma' -- No, we didn't get any snow but we had freezing fog. That is a new one that I've never heard of before. The temperature was right at 32 and the fog was so very thick. The roads were slippery and the state highway patrol was telling people to stay home if they didn't have to travel. I hope your dishwasher full of water is easy to fix. I hate when stuff like that happens and it always seems like one leads to another one. Hope your trip to the commissary wasn't too bad. I'm thinking about making the Party Mix that I never got around to before Christmas. Cereal and nuts are 'healthy' snacks, right?

Well, I need to do some ironing that I never did get to yesterday. Have a great 'rest of the day' and a terrific Thursday tomorrow!

Good morning ladies! It is another beautiful day here, nice and warm. I am trying to get cleaning caught up. I am going to try and get the bathrooms done after the Nanny is over. I love that crazy show.

Jack goofed with the disposal just a little and we think it may have plugged up the dishwasher so it is take it apart tonight! Jack did get my new computer desk all put together except the keyboard tray and the door to the hard drive cabinet last night.

You know, I am still waiting for that stupid hotel to refund my money from Thanksgiving? I am tired of them lying to me and I sent a letter to the headquarters CEO. We shall see what happens with that.

I guess I better get back to work. It doesn't do itself!

Faye

Soybella: Basically we are old ladies! It was started I believe by a lady in the south, but we live everywhere now. You are more than welcome to join us. We all have grown children and some of us have grandchildren.

Good Evening, Flowers! We are having freezing rain tonight after another day of fog, clouds, and gloom. Jason called tonight to see if I could babysit tomorrow because their sitter is sick. I'll wait till morning to make my call as I'm not crazy about driving on slick roads let alone going in the dark and by myself. I putzed all day long and no one, but me, could tell what I accomplished. *sigh* It's all piddly stuff that just takes time to wade through.

'Gma' -- I know you will enjoy your new computer desk once it is all put together. How is it that you get The Nanny in the morning? I do enjoy that show too! Good luck with the hotel CEO . . . keep us posted!

Soybella -- Now that is an interesting name! We are a very small group but would love to have you join us. Post often so that we may get to know you and you us! I live in Iowa with my husband and one cat named 'Mom.' We have two grown children and four grandchildren under the age of 3. I work with special ed. students in our local high school.

Guess I will read the rest of the posts and pick up my kitchen. Have a fantastic Friday!

Good morning gals! Where is everyone this week? Jean and I are lonely! It is cooler this morning, but should be 62 by lunchtime. Oooh, sorry about your weather Jean. I am like you, I hate driving on slippery roads let alone slippery and in the dark.

Jean: Jack finished my desk last night and it is just great. I had an old cast off of Jack's that was so old and the cheap paper laminate was even peeling off it! The Nanny is on the Lifetime channel from 9-10 am here. Maybe I like her so much as she reminds me of a modern Lucy. I read an article about her once and she said her favorite actress was Lucille Ball and she emulates her. She does a pretty good job, though her new show stinks and probably won't last long. I am not even sure what channel it is on, maybe the WB.

Well, the dishwasher is definitely on the fritz so I guess I am going to have to call the home warranty people and get someone to look at it. My suspicions are it has something to do with Jack forgetting to remove the plug on the disposal before connecting the drain from the dishwasher and it is probably plugged up, but Jack couldn't take apart the water line for the dishwasher so he couldn't pull it out completely to look at it. {{{SIGH}}} it is ALWAYS something around this old place. My dishwasher is only 3 years old so I wouldn't think it could be anything too serious.

Anyone doing anything special for New Year's Eve? Like I said before, we are leery of the drunks driving around here so we stay home. I am always nervous about the kids being out and I know both sets always do something for New Years.

I guess I better get on the stick and get some breakfast into me and get the dusting and vacuuming done upstairs. I hate to drag that vacuum up the stairs as it is so heavy, but I am hoping that by summer we will have new hardwood floors in and won't need it so I don't want to buy one for the upper floor.

Everyone have a great day and a good weekend. I have hubby home from tonight until January 9th so I am using him to get stuff done on a honey do list.

Happy...<checking desk calendar>...Friday! I'm losing track of my days since I haven't been working since last Thursday...over a week ago...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I did. The tradition in my family here in DE is to have everyone over on Christmas Eve. I cook a huge dinner. We eat. We unwrap the presents and chaos reigns throughout the house! I love it! After everyone left, DH and I went to a late night service at church. A wonderful way to end the evening. Christmas morning, we were up bright and early on our way to VA to visit with all the parents and other assorted relatives down that way. Everyone is doing fine and seem to be in good spirits. We came home Wednesday. Tired. We napped. Yesterday, even though it was raining cats and dogs, DH and I went out and looked at hardwood floors. We're going to take up the carpet in the great room, dining room, and down the hall. We're in the process of getting estimates now. Today, it's stopped raining but I have a ton of errands to run. Going to the grocery store is one of them.

Congratulations to Faye for winning that windfall of money! Good for you! You shopped and you spent it on some "stuff"! Good for you. Your grandson is a hoot--telling everyone about going to the casinos! Too funny!

Jean, I'm going to start taking down the Christmas decorations today. When do you return to work?

soybella/Maria, welcome! Yeah...we're a "little" old here but we've still got some spirit in us! Have you ever seen that move, "Steel Magnolias"? Well, just imagine the spirit of those southern women in us.

Just peeking in to say 'hello' . . . I'm digging to find the tax envelopes that are due in January. It was a slippery morning around here and doesn't look the best yet. Of course no sanding trucks went by so I'm not walking out to the mailbox any time soon.

'Gma' -- I hope you get the dw/gd problem fixed soon. It's too bad Jack couldn't get it apart. For New Year's Eve we are going to Jason's in-laws for supper then will play cards, and make plans for our Maui trip. They live about a half hour from us and we go on back country roads so hopefully the drunks won't be out yet. We will be home early because Bob has to usher in church on Sunday. It is also communion, rip and dip style, so if I go I will pass that up. I'm waiting for someone to ask me why but so far no one has. Are you thinking of real wood floors or the laminate type? You've probably said before but CRS has set in.

Gail -- Nice to see your bright and shining post today! I will ask you the same question . . are you going to get the real wood floor or the laminate type? We've had floor a year now. We want to put new carpet in the bedrooms, hall, and down the 'new' oak stairs. We kept saying we'd do it after the cats were gone but since we are now down to one, I'm getting anxious to do it before spring. Maybe after our trip, I'll reconsider when we check prices.

I need to keep moving! Have a nice day . . . I'm waiting for some sunshine to appear and the weatherman is saying not until next Wednesday.

Just wanted to wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR! May 2006 be the best year for you and your family!

It doesn't seem possible another year has disappeared and soon will be history. *sigh* Where do the days go? I'm waiting for the dryer to finish so I can put the next load in. It's another gloomy day in my corner of the world -- the snow is melting so that is a good thing. Bob is doing chores for his friend who put a nail through the palm of his hand and ended up having surgery yesterday. Luckily it missed the tendons but he had to stay overnight in the hospital and needed at least 24+ hours of antibiotic through an IV. It happened the day before and waited to go to the doctor. Dumb! I fixed cheese bread to take tonight; I've never made it so hope it turns out ok. The hostess is fixing lasagna.

I hear the dryer buzzing so need to keep moving. Have a nice weekend!

I know I don't post here often, but I am asking for your prayers again. I just had a call from my son and he was crying. They were following an ambulance carrying Jackson. He has a bad case of pneumonia. I don't have any details but they were heading for Childrens hospital.

Morning gals! Hope you didn't do too much reveling last night. We just stayed home and had a toast together and Jack watched basketball.

Sharon: We will indeed be thinking of your grandbaby and ds and family. Hope things all turn out ok.

Gail: I am hoping we can afford to get new flooring in the whole house this spring/summer. These floors are horrible and nasty and impossible to clean because the carpeting is so old and the linoleum is too. Hope you find just what you want.

Jean: We haven't decided between hardwood and a laminate. Guess we will wait and see when we are ready to buy. What did you guys put in and do you like it? I think the laminate would be better with pets (ie their claws scratching the floor up) but I am not very versed on what is what.

We got a few of the honey dos finished yesterday so today I think we will tackle the ceiling patching and moving the china cabinet and I HAVE to get dusting and vacuuming done I wanted to do a couple days ago. I tend not to get a lot done with Jack home.

You girls have a nice first day of the new year and I will talk with you later.

Happy & Healthy New Year to All

We woke this morning to a blanket of white....about 3 inches but it didn't stop DH from going out to get the paper. I am thinking about next week when he won't be able to drive after his arthroscopic knee surgery. Then it will be me that has to get the paper and all those other errands. Oh, well, this to will pass. You can't guess that I hate to drive in the Winter can you!
Had a very quiet New Years Eve and will have a quiet day today. Have already taken down the window lights and tree and only need to get the cartons from the basement and then cart them down again.
I will chime in on this wood floor vs carpet question. We have wood floors that were in desperate need of refinishing but when we took up the old carpet in the living room we found that the previous owners didn't carry the floor over to the addition. The problem was solved with wall to wall everywhere. The upstairs bedrooms had some bad water damage from a roof leak years ago and would be hard to repair. I have enjoyed the carpeting, the warmth it brings to the bedrooms is great. However, in the front hall, it is difficult to keep really clean. This is where all the outside traffic comes and where you walk from the kitchen to the living room. My advise is wood is great in the living areas but bedrooms benefit from rugs. I am getting off the soap box now.

Sharon: Our prayers will be going out for your grandchild and your family. Hope all is well soon.

Faye: Just wanted to add ....CONGRATULATIONS...on your big win at the Casino. Never have I had that kind of luck.

Gloria in MA....Think I will start carting that stuff down to the basement now.
