hi,

im hope omeone has advice for me. My oldest daughte has been diagonsed with celiac(allergic to glutens). up until today i thought i could keep the Gluten producets in my house and just make she didnt get any, but it came clear to me today after being told by my doctor just how seriouly she has it and how much damage can be caused to her. She has othe health problems to wich dosnt help any.

Now i also found out today that my youngest daughter is severly allergic to nuts and chocalate. To the extent that if i have a bar i have to make sure i wash my hands and face and brush my teeth before coming in contact with her.

Needless to say, i must get rid of all wheat , gluten products, nuts and choclate from my house.

I need help on idea for starches. i know we can have rice and potatoes, but these go right to my BUTT, where i dont want them to go.

If anyone has advice I would greatly appreciate it

Angela

Angela - I'm so sorry to hear this about your daughters!

About the starches - you can also have corn, peas, winter squash, barley -- do you have access to a health store in your area - there may be a gluten free section? This is pretty serious - I'd get your counselors to call the nutrionist to find other options for you -- if you can find some stuff at the store - (like rice noodles, or something like that) then they can check for equivilant servings for you.

Also - really check the ingredients of the lites - they may have hidden nut fats - like peanut oils, or something in them.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your daughter, but glad you found out now instead of when she had a serious reaction.

Just FYI, my lites (I only eat lemon, so that's all i can account for) do say on the package that it may contain traces of nuts. i would think lemon is the furthests away from what iwould think would have nuts, so I would check them all out to be sure. I don't know if it says it ont he box too, but on the individual wrappers mine says it.

If you can't find gluten-free products near you, just try doing a google search for something like "gluten free bread". You can find an amazing amount of information that way. For example, here's one link:
http://www.glutenfreemall.com/
Of course, you'll have to be doubly careful because some gluten-free foods do contain nuts, so read carefully! Best of luck to you--radically changing what you eat can be difficult, but there are a lot of options out there for you.

If you have a really fancy market near you (like Whole Foods), they will probalby have more gluten free products. If not, definitely go to the health food section of your reg. store. I have seen products there marked Gluten free and labeled together.

So sorry your daughter is having these allergies. I'm guessing it is permanent. I think your best resource on 3FC would be to post something in the dieting with obstacles board. I know your daughter can't be the only one with this problem, so hopefully someone who has the same allergies and lots of experience dealing with it will see your post and help out.
