Wow!! November already!!
Just starting the new thread...
I haven't run in 2 days :( I hate when life gets in the way... I'll be running tomorrow though :carrot:

Hello everyone! I officially HATE running! But I want to be able to do it! Okay so maybe hate's a strong word, perhaps, I'll love it soon!
So today I started the couch to 5K program. I e-mailed DF from work to tell him we really should get our collective lardy butts in gear and start running. He chickened out on Monday, cos he went for a drink, then he rings me today and says he has a meeting... :chin: So I thought I'd go out without him, but he said not to cos it's dark and rainy and he doesn't awnt me getting mugged (bless him). So I decided to do my first interval training running up and down the living room. I did. I sweated, I feel dead proud! And it wasn't hard at all! So maybe if the program progresses as I do, I might be running 5K soon! :cb:
So I'll be checking in here Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturdays (depending how much life we have on a Friday night!). If I don't come here and tell you how good I've been and how much I love my new 5K program, Ilene, I give you permission to come and :rollpin: me in the LWL thread!
Soon to be a "runner" :carrot:

2F -- I will hold you to that and convert you into a runner if it's the last thing I do  ... I LOVE running!! It really is THE ONE thing that has made the last few pounds go away, so you just gotta LOVE that, even if you decide that you do HATE running!
I didn't run today but I did do some LEGS :strong: and bosu skipping, my new fun cardio!

11-03-2005, 06:35 AM
I like the sound of your bosu skipping! If only I had a bosu ball and high enough ceilings!
Both kickboxing classes have been cancelled today so I'm dragging DF out with me (he's wimped out on Monday and Wednesday...) and we'll go running if it's the last thing I do! :D
2frustrated
11-04-2005, 05:35 AM
We went! :cb: We only did 10 mins instead of 20 mins of intervals because DF was flagging :D For once I'M the fit one! I bundled up in tracky bottoms, long socks, vest, long sleeved t-shirt, body warmer, light jacket, hat and gloves! :D I was only just warm enough!
I actually ENJOYED running last night! I think I found my pace ok! I have a friend who likes to sing the little song from Nemo, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming..." when she's working out to keep her going.. so I used her tactics and sang, "Just keep running, just keep running!" In my 3rd running interval I actually felt like I was doing it RIGHT! My thighs weren't hurting (thank you squats!) and I like the feeling of just progressing along the street! The only problem I have is the lung-burning feeling! Don't like that, but it will go right? When I get a bit fitter? Won't it? :?:

Hi everybody,
I got the go ahead from my OB yesterday, and this morning I got up and ran! It was pretty tough, but I managed about 4:1.5 run to walk intervals on average. I think that was really good considering I was expecting to make it about 30 sec before I crashed! Anyway, I was running slowly (for me anyway), about a 13.5 min/mile pace, and walked about 20min/mile on the rest breaks. Made it 3.5 mile total, with my longest run interval about 0.4 miles on a slight downhill grade.
It felt great!
Tomorrow I'm getting my bike cleaned up and fixing the flat tires (!) and jump back into cycling as well. Unfortunately none of my cycling clothes fit me, so I'll have to improvise.
I'll run again on Sunday or Monday, depending on DH's schedule and when I can get back to the pool. I'm going to run at least 3x/week now.
Hope everyone's running is going great!

I ran 10 MILES this morning!! That is the furthest I have ever run and I just had to make an announcement...woohoo. Next weekend I have another 5-k race but on Sundays I do a distance run and I am quite proud of myself.
Hope everyone had a great weekend.
I did some fun running last week. I was on holiday staying with family, and I hadn't taken my proper running stuff, but had some decent shoes on and took my sister's dog for a walk down the sea front. Anyway, he was pulling a bit so I told him that if he wanted to go faster then I was up to the challenge. I ended up doing some decentish intervals with him, little runs and walks between (I was wearing a skirt so not particularly fast but enough to get my heart rate up and him panting a bit), and not a full work out, but the sort of fun, playing running I' d never have done at my heaviest. Like when you're a kid and you don't think of it as exercise, just messing around. That's the sort of moment when you realise why you put yourself through it.

Liz, congrats on the long run! 10 miles is a big deal.
YP1, sound like a very fun run.
Welcome eadvenp!
Hi Ilene.
I ran again tonight. Second run since DD came. I felt like it was a disaster. I worked so hard just to make it. Same basic run/walk intervals as 1st run, same course (3.5 mi) in 53 min vs 52 min. But it just sucked. I guess these things happen. But I did it. Next time it will feel better.
I'm now officially shooting for 3x/week running, with some cycling and swimming mixed in. I'll start lifting again after I'm done being sore from running and cycling. REALLY need to work my abs too. Getting some core strength again should help all my tri disciplines.

Hi all! Welcome eadvenp.
I'm still out there running. Ice pellets did cause me to cut one run rather short last week though. I'll run in snow or rain, but what felt like razor sharp little ice pellets hitting my neck was too much for me. Then this weekend I had 2 really, really slow runs for what I thought was no apparent reason. Looking at my log though, I'd run quite fast for me 3x the week before, so my legs were probably tired. Plus I'd eaten too much Hallowe'en crap that week too. So at least I got out there, even if it was slow. Today was much better despite the wind.
Anne, hang in there. I'm sure you remember having good and bad running days pre-pregnancy too. The bad days are what make us appreciate those days where you feel like you could comfortably run for hours. Keep it up and you'll have some good days soon too. And don't be too hard on yourself, you just had a baby, so your body still hasn't totally recovered and you're on call to care for baby 24/7, which is exhausting.

Hi Guys!
I am new here. I’ve just started the couch-5K program this morning. It felt really good! I was just wondering if anyone has completed the program successfully and what kinds of suggest they might have. Is three times a week enough?
Liz, I can’t believe you did 10 miles! I’ve never liked running because I think it is boring compared to some of the other sports. However it’s the cheapest, fastest and most convenient way to burn calories. What do you do to keep motivated?
Thanks for helping out the newbie.

hey all! Ran on Tuesday (did my 27 min on the treadmill, plus additional cardio to take it to 60 min) and then ran again today. Today i did a 12 minute mile, and actually, i did 2 12 minute miles with very little walking, which is a total victory for me. I feel good, cause im getting back into shape, and it isn't even as hard as i thought. I was expecting to be sore on weds, but i wasn't... nowi have to do it with the treadmill set at an incline (i was doing it at 0.0)

Miaka, I usually always listen to music when I run and that helps tremendously. Also I've started running 5-k races and knowing, for example, that I have a race coming up this weekend has been making me stick to my training plan more than ever so keep your goal in mind while running and take it slow. It's a great cardio workout and I think it's really helped shape my legs (in combination with weight training, of course).

Hi guys,
I ran again last night. Just 2.5 miles since I'm still pretty sore from my squats/lunges Wednesday night. Took dog #2 with me for that, then came back and walked dog #1 another mile. The run was a good one, with longer run intervals, shorter walk intervals and just felt hard, but still comfortable. Don't know what was different this time--it was cooler maybe, low 60s, and I didn't feel the need to push quite so hard since I was sore.
I'm going to have to buy some new shoes--my feet are not quite like I left them before the pregnancy.
Welcome, Miaka. Racing keeps me motivated. Knowing that if I don't get out there and do the work, I'll do poorly in my race, keeps me going out the door even on the bad days. I'm training for a sprint distance triathlon in March right now. On the good days, it is just a joy and it's hard to keep me in. I can't listen to music, too much traffic sneaking up over hills and around corners and I need to hear it as well as possible.

Finished a pretty tough 5-k this morning (more hilly than I am used to) with the top women's time of 25:14. Not my all-time best but considering the course it was a victory. Now we are looking forward to an evening run in December through the Christmas lights in Austin. Have a great weekend everyone!

Lizz -- that is awesome time :bravo: ... I can't wait to get to that point... I am so dang slow, but I still get a good workout!
:welcome: Miaka !!
Anne -- After I had kids my feet took quite a while to get back to normal too... Actually my whole body did
Today I had a good run but I needed to be home for a certain time and didn't run as long as usual... I did 6.7k in 40 mins, see Lizz how S-L-O-W I am? ... It was gorgeous out today too...

Miaka, welcome! I started with c25k in summer 2004. I kept running and slowing increasing the distance of my weekend long run all fall/winter. And May 2005 I ran a half marathon. The program really works if you're patient and stick to it.
Congrats Lizz! Great time and wow, first place too! Was there a prize?
Anne, my feet grew a size during my first pregnancy and never went back to normal. Which is not a bad thing for me since I went from size 5 to 6, which is much easier to find. Pregnancy really is a full body experience! One good thing about having to get back into running/biking shape--you'll really notice progress week to week.
Ilene, 6.7km in 40 minutes is not that slow at all. I run about that speed on my easy days and long days. Or even slower if I'm pushing the girls in the stroller. My best 5k time is 24:18, but it would hurt way too much to try and run that fast too often. No point in leaving your fastest times on the road in training when there's no time clock or award at the end!
I did my usual 16km Sunday run yesterday morning. I started out slow as molasses again, even for me. Then after the second km, I decided that each km was going to be about 5-10 seconds faster than the one before. And it worked! I tricked myself into running at faster speeds without feeling like it was too difficult. I got up close to my 10k speed for 1km, then slowed down again for the last 2-3k home. But my slowed down speed was more like my normal easy pace rather than the molasses speed I've been wanting to run lately, which felt much better--I haven't lost my speed, I've just stopped pushing myself. It's hard to force myself to focus when my next race isn't until next May and I won't start a training program for it until late January at the earliest.
I did buy myself a heart rate monitor on the weekend (and then told dh I'd bought my xmas present from him). Hopefully focusing on running at a low heart rate rather than running for speed will keep me interested. I'm going to try my first run with it later thsi morning I think.

Hi all,
I only ran once when I was in the Dominican Republic... too hot and humid.... although I am a trooper about heat and humidity normally, now that I am pregnant I do have to be aware of my body temperature and my body felt awful running (even in the semi-airconditioned gym). Hopefully I can at least get back into it a bit now... I'll probably limit my long runs to 8K (for now and that depends on how I feel), but some exercise is better than none right?
I am just amazed at how my fitness level has dropped in the last few weeks. I ran a half marathon 3 weeks ago and now 5K even seems like a challenge. Shows my body is busy using its resources where it really needs it.
I am cutting at least 1 run a week and replacing that with weight training and will do that three times a week (apparently it makes labour easier... I won't ever really know the difference, but hey I'll give it a shot). In the winter I might start aquajogging instead of outdoor running... I'll figure it out.
I also plan on doing some yoga!
Anyways good luck running everyone!
Ali:)
I did a 10k run on the treadmill this morning, the second time in a row I've broken through the 59 minute mark, so I'm quite pleased with that. Only 2 weeks to go before my next race when I'm aiming to at least beat my previous time of 68 minutes, and hopefully finish in under an hour.

I ran on the treadmill today (5k) and did a hill workout so my speed never went higher than 6.0mph but I upped the incline to 8% at one point! Tough for a girl who is used to running flat surfaces all the time.
Thanks for all the congrats on my racing. I got a little medal to go with my collection which was nice. I think I am doing a 5-miler on Thanksgiving day so that will be a challenge as well since I've only done 5-k's at this point racing.
Keep up the good work everybody...and Ilene, your pace is great!

Hi ladies, I could use some support. I need to tone up and shape up. I started the C25K and just finished w1d2. It's hard for me to do. I think it's beause my legs are so heavy. I plan on giving myself extra time to get through the program. 75 pounds is a lot of extra baggage to run around with. I want to run/jog the '5K race for the cure' here in May. That's my fitness goal. :tread:

Thank you! My calves were so tight last night, I was sure I would be in pain today. Suprisingly I wasn't sore this morning. :)
That's definitely doable - I was a similar weight to you (or a bit heavier) when I started running in about March, and I did my first 10k in July - I've worked up to 10k now. I did take things too quickly at first though and injured my foot for a couple of weeks, so I'd agree it's best to work up slowly!

Julie - I'm week 2 day 1 or 2 depending on how I feel! (I did half of day 1 before I went to Tokyo) I need to pick it up tonight and get jogging for that whole 90 seconds! I love the 2 minute walk you get too! :D It's just repeating it that is the problem!
Mrs D - I'm thinking about starting running at lunchtimes. I don't know though! I'm a bit apprehensive about getting teased at work! Like that really bothers me? I don't know, maybe I'm afraid people will start to rib me more if I give up! Maybe I really should run at lunch, then I don't have an excuse if everyone's expecting me to go! :dizzy: I think if I sign up for a 5k then I can say I'm "training".

Okay, I made it out the door. I got W2D2 in before my body gave out. I was too sore to enjoy the work out, but I atleast completed it. :tread: I have my energy burst at night, so I usually workout in the evening.
My weight hasn't budged all week. As a matter of fact it's gone up a pound and a half, and I'm really discouraged being how this is only week 2 of my diet. :(
2F, it's good to have a workout buddy where I am. :) Good luck this week! :carrot:
I had a great run this morning. I didn't want to do too much because I've got a 10k race on Sunday, but I felt like running for a while, even if it wasn't for too long. Anyway, I remembered that I'd seen something that suggested running for 20 minutes faster as a change from 30 minutes at your normal pace - I've been stuck in a bit of a rut speedwise recently, and haven't got much faster (although I've got better at running further). So, I set the treadmill at a pace roughly in the middle of my current range and increased it by 0.1km per hour every minute. I managed to go for 17 minutes and got to a top speed of 1km per hour faster than I've ever run before by the end, which I was very pleased with!

I did my first 5 mile race today! Actually it was 5.2 miles to be exact and a great way to start off Turkey Day. Finished in 42:17 which I didn't think was too bad. It was the biggest race I'd ever run in so I didn't end up placing all that great. Plus I got stuck with a size L shirt because I registered late. Oh well I had a good time and that is what matters most right?

:cp: Well done YP and Lizzbabe!
I'm feeling slightly crook today, but I am AM AM going to make the effort to get out and do some jogging this afternoon when I get home (even though it's about on freezing! BRRRRRRR!). Then I think I'm going to start doing running on a lunch time and screw what everyone at work thinks!
YP only problem with signing up for anything, I can't find any 5Ks in my area till the Race for Lifes start in March or April or whenever they are! You'd think there's be LOADS of races in London - jeesus! I might just sign up for a 10K that's in February just for a laugh! I've done 5Ks before at a "wogging" pace! I might just bite the bullet!
Do it, do it!
(Actually, I was just looking for something to sign up for after this 10k on Sunday so I've got motivation to keep on running and had a similar problem trying to find something decent)
Anyway, back to today's running, after yesterday I realised how much below my full potential I've been running recently, so I upped the speed and managed to run 5k well over a minute faster than I ever have done before (on the treadmill at least - I ran Race for Life a bit closer to this time) in 28 minutes 15. I really need to keep on pushing myself, I've got far too comfortable recently!

Way to go on pushing yourself Helen! It's so much harder on the treadmill than when you are out during a real race. I try to do intervals or hill training to keep it somewhat challenging.

Hi all. Having been away for almost a month, I had a ton to read catching up on all the posts! Congrats everyone on your awesome runs! I haven't run in about 2 months--I got the flu, got better, ran for three days, got a cold, then bronchitis. With the cold weather and my asthma, the outdoor running isn't really possible, but I am going to get back on the treadmill Monday (my 29th birthday). I figure I'd better get myself back on track if I'm going to lose the weight before I turn 30! (I gained 10 back while I was sick). Plus, I was planning to run a 10-mile race in a few weeks. I will NOT skip the race, but will probably cut back to the 5-miler, as I have gotten a bit out of shape.

Julie -- Don't go by the company name. It's a very good idea to go to that running specialty store to fit your foot properly. Good for you for returning your cross trainers, they may not be the best kind... like you said if you're gonna pay money you may as well get something that fits YOU...
Woo hoo, I ran a 10k race today. I actually ran every step of it, often when I try to run 10k I end up walking a little bit at some point, but not today which is a big achievement for me - possibly more of an achievement than the time. I won't get the chip time through til at least tomorrow, but the clock time was 62:30, with a very slow start before I ran over the timing mat so I may have got pretty close to 60 minutes which would be fab.
And possibly the most shocking thing of all, I'm starting to really enjoy it!

Way to go on the running Helen! It's a big accomplishment to have ran the entire thing. I look forward to trying my first 10-k...not sure when that will be though.

 Morning laydees! I have my running gear packed in my bag. I'm *thinking* about going out at lunchtime. I'm telling you now, because if I don't go you will all :rollpin: beat me up! Won't you? And I do so want to go, because I've been a big :ink: yesterday - I ate LOTS of biscuits and bread and potatoes and cereal (carboholic - moi?), so I'm going to be a little  and good as gold for the next two weeks! :D

2F congratulations!!! I'm not going to start week 3 until next Monday. Glucosamine/fish oil/Calcium is helping my sore knees so I'll be back on track in no time!

:D Thank you Ilene! You motivate me more - I thought, "Well I have to go and run, just so I can post that I did it!" :dizzy: Whatever works right??
Julie - I'm glad your knees are getting better :D
I'm so happy, I got my chip time through from the 10k on Sunday. As well as running all the way, my other goal was to break 60 minutes. The gun time was 62.30, but I'm happy now. The start was even slower than I thought, and the chip time was 59:17. That makes me one happy gym bunny :D :carrot: :D :carrot:

I'm working on strengthening my quads and hamstrings. I'll give C25K another shot on Monday.
It was kinda funny. I felt weird walking into the running shop. The guy that helped me find my shoes, asked in almost a humorous tone, "so, what made you decide to take up running?". I told him after 2 kids and being very out of shape, that it was time to change that. (I'm sure they don't have fat ladies in there every day asking for shoes lol) He seemed to accept that answer and asked me if I had a race I was working towards, so I told him race for the cure 5k. He said it was going to suggest that race, that their shop was going to be sponsers.
YP1 that's an excellent time! Way To Go! :carrot:

I hadn't run since Sunday because there was either someone on my treadmill in the gym or I just felt like doing other stuff (stairmaster etc) but this morning I said "no more excuses!" climbed on and did a 40 min hill intervals workout for a total of 3.68 miles. Woohoo back on track!

I am into my 4th week! Feels great! Although next weeks routine looks way too hard. I guess, I won't know until I give it a try!

Miaka -- Give it a try you never know... IF it's too difficult just bring it down a notch till it feels good for you, the next week you may do better,,,

Where is everyone?
I took a few days off of exercise. I think I'm going to wait and try running again on Thursday. That will give me a few more days to work on stregthening my leg muscles so I don't get another injury.

 I did it again :D I went for a "jog" in my lunch hour! Now I feel :barf: Lunch anyone? I actually did it all too! No slacking off for a minute! I was bullying myself into it, "If you think you can't go on, if you think you can't do it, think again!" And singing raindrops on roses! Just to get me through that last interval! I made it though :D
I ran for 20 minutes (3.5k this morning). I've had a couple of days off running but I want to get a couple of decent runs in before I go on holiday later this month.
