100 lb. Club - South Beach Phase I on Monday & a little more about me
10-28-2005, 06:49 PM
I'm going to be starting the South Beach Diet Phase I on Monday. :sssh: I know that a lot of people don't necessarily agree with that diet (or any "diet" of similar nature). However, I think the same things do not work for everybody (or every body for that matter). My doctor has recommended this way of eating to me, for me. I have high cholesterol and am experiencing very stubborn weight loss. He believes that this may just be what I need to jump start my loss as well as a good plan for me to follow long term. I know that there is a South Beach forum here but I wanted to post what I will be doing here as well because it was in this forum that I began posting. It's 3FC "home". Hopefully, this plan will work for me. After I lose 5 more pounds, I plan to break my weight loss up into 10-10lb goals. I have heard (from some of you) that makes it less daunting. I still want to lose 25lbs by my college graduation this December, but if I even come close, I will be thrilled. Any loss is a good loss.
I am determined to get these pounds off. I am supposed to get married next fall and I would love to be at goal (175lbs) by then. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride; I am ready to shine. I'm tired of being the girl in the background. Also, I want to begin having children :bb: in the next few years. I want to enter pregnancy healthy so that I can enjoy it to the fullest. I appreciate the support I have found on this site. It helps to see people going through the same thing that I am. It is motivating to see those who have reached their goals. Ok, that's enough yappy. Just thought I'd let ya'll know.

My advice - do whatever works for you!! The great part about this forum is that you can be on any diet (or in my case - sometimes no diet.. hehe :nono: ) and people here still just love, support and encourage you. All I can say is don't do the chocolate diet - I know for fact it doesn't work
Mini goals are a great idea. Right now mine are just to stay off regular soda for the week and journal. (I'm coming back after finishing nursing my son)
Good Luck to you on Monday!! Let us know how it goes! How long is phase 1? one week? what is phase one all about?
10-29-2005, 01:24 PM
I didn't realize that there was any controversy surrounding the South Beach Diet. Do people have problems with the first two weeks? I, personally, always feel excellent at the end of Phase 1. As for the rest of the diet, it's not really one of the dreaded "low carb" diet. (Or perhaps I modify it too much?) It's more of a low-fat, low-glycemic index, smart choices diet. I think it's designed as an easy way to tell people which foods are healthiest. The only thing I really have a problem with is the artificial sweeteners, but that seems to go with all diets . . .
Good luck, by the way. This is probably the right diet for you. If it's not, you'll find the right one.
10-30-2005, 01:16 AM
Thanks ya'll. Winter, I just know that some people have a problem with that diet. Maybe it's just some people I know... I've encountered very mixed reactions. Oh well, this is for me.
10-30-2005, 01:55 AM
I think the South Beach Diet is a fine diet. Even if I didn't, we're here to support each other, not throw daggers. So no flames this way. Good luck & keep us posted!

I did South Beach phase 1 for 2 weeks. I loved the fact that I honestly wasn't the least bit hungry! My main problem with it was I got dizzy toward the ends and I mean pass out dizzy! I did get headaches but that was nothing compared to feeling you could black out at any moment. I lost 9 lbs total and would have stayed on if my DH hadn't got upset abou the dizziness. I've been tweaking my WW with South Beach and finding I Like it very much! One thing I found easy is I'm not a bread eather so wrapping my lunchmeat in lettus made all the more better. I still do that. One of my down falls is I LOVE PASTA!!! I have to watch myself with it even the 100% whole wheat I gain just looking at it. ;)
10-31-2005, 12:56 PM
Good luck with it. I hear South Beach is probably one of the better plans out there if you are choosing to do low carb. I love my carbs too much to restrict them like that. I opt for moderation instead. :D
10-31-2005, 03:03 PM
It's not so much a low carb, as a better, different carb than we usually eat a lot of. Trust me I love them too, but that's what got me here in the first place! Can't wait until I get my whole grain bread back (in moderation of course). Day 1 is going very well.

We're about the same height and weight (I'm 5' 8-1/2") and I'm starting SB Phase I tomorrow (november 1!). Yay! We can be SoBe buddies! I've done Phase I before and I'll need all the help I can get. ;)
PM me if you get frustrated!
10-31-2005, 08:36 PM
Just wondering.. how many carbs are you allowed? I can understand limiting chips/rice/pasta... but fruit! that's so not fair :)
Are you allowed to eat fruit in phase 1?
10-31-2005, 11:20 PM
Jessica: I'd love to. I've never done it before so maybe you could help me out! I'll PM you.
Dana: Fruit is excluded for phase 1 (two weeks), but is added back after that. You eat carbs, just not from fruit or bread etc. You get some carbs from beans, cheeses, milk (though dairy has limits), veggies, etc. It's based in the glycemic index.

Jessica and Scarlett:
I'm starting SBD on 11/1 as well! Perhaps we could all team up, that would be so great. Let me know. :)
11-01-2005, 08:32 AM
Although I am not doing the South Beach diet, I do restrict my carb intake. I have found over the last year, that by restricting (not eliminating) has reduced my belly by about 12 inches so far. I have had moderate inches taken off the rest of my body as well, but if you're like me and carry alot of belly fat, low carb really helped reduce that. That being said, nothing works for everyone so you may have to tweak things like I have along the way. Can't wait to hear about your progress!
11-01-2005, 09:20 AM
Hi Shannon - I'm not that familiar with the SB diet, but as you said different plans work for different people. I wish you the best of success with it. Keep us posted as to how you're finding it! Don't worry, you'll shine as the beautiful bride!!!
11-01-2005, 12:31 PM
Apryl! Yay! Yes, we'd make a great team. Post and let me know how your first day went.
Shannon, Jessica and Apryl - I'm planning to try phase 1 again tomorrow. Or at least a modified version. I did it once before over the late summer and it really helped focus me on healthier choices. I could use the "kick" again. I'd love to join in where ever you guys decide to post. I like this "club" b/c I feel like I know many of you. I will check out the south beach forums too for content. Good luck. Hope day one has been great! :carrot:
11-01-2005, 06:58 PM
Apryl, Sherri and Jessica: Uh oh! Looks like we're teaming up! I hope your start went well.
Connie: Thats fantastic to hear. I carry the vast majority of my weight in my midsection which is not cute (esp. when I'm so tall). I am measuring today so hopefully I can see some progress too over time!
Hey Shannon - I'm 5' 10" too. Interesting to see how tall folks are. My belly is my sore spot too (especially after 3 kids)
11-02-2005, 12:50 AM
Me too! That's kinda why I'm thinking lower carb is the way to go... I am a giant apple.
My first day.... well, it was good! I had to turn down a LOT of leftoever Halloween candy, and I have kind of an upset stomach, but I"m not sure if they're correlated. Who knows...
How about you ladies? HOw'd it go?
11-02-2005, 12:09 PM
I was hungry all day. I'm thinking it was psychosomatic because it wasn't like I wasn't eating - I just wasn't pigging out! :) According to FitDay, my calories came in under 1400.
I turned down Dia de los muertos bread in spanish class!!! I am still sad about that! :)
We can have SF Jello, right? I need something like that.
11-02-2005, 02:35 PM
You can definitely have SF Jello. It's one of my favorite desserts even before SBD. I know that was hard to turn dows that dia de los muertos bread, when I took spanish throughout middle and high school, I always looked forward to it (so good).
Wip: no kiddies for me yet. But my stomach is my least attractive feature. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty solid but that's the worst. I took measurements yesterday so I have a start point.
Today is going alright. I don't feel like, correction, I know I am not eating enough. That's just how I am sometimes, I don't always have an appetite. Yesterday I had a pretty good appetite but my Fitday calories stopped dead at 1100! Bad Shannon :nono: , I know.
Almost thru day 1. I caught myself so many times mindlessly reaching for something I shouldn't have. My biggest challenge at the best of times. I'm just going to fitday now. Not sure about calories. Have a good Thursday!
11-03-2005, 12:38 AM
GJ- I turned down "dead bread" today!!! AHhh!!!!!
I feel hungry a lot too though... I'm not sure I'm eating enough? I know carbs don't fill you up, so it's obviously not the lack of them. It drives me crazy though. On a positive note, I don't think I've ever turned anything down before, so that feels good.
11-03-2005, 05:26 PM
Well, I turned down a lot of beer. Go me. But I did have some bites of a ice cream cake which was soooo not on SB but I did track it in FitDay and I was still under 1600 calories. Wow, I feel a lot more in control. It was like I decided, "Ok, I can have one or the other AND it's not a license to cheat." And it wasn't. I have a birthday/cocktail party to go to on Friday AND a beer tasting festival to go to on Saturday. So, I've decided to not drink at the birthday party and to just have fun at the festival. I'm not a perfect SB girl, I guess.
11-03-2005, 07:57 PM
I don't think you can be perfect SB. Well, without driving yourself crazy. I say that because I have been pretty perfect SB (minus my low calories) and it's driving me insane. Pizza Hut commercials and Hot Pocket commercials (they added more cheese, for crying out loud) definitely making me squirm. I'm not having cravings so much as thinking about how I loved those foods. Guess that's what got me in trouble. Today was fine. Still not eating enough though (when I say that I mean calorie-wise).
Can't say that I'm hungry. The 'habit' is sure there. I ended up just going to bed last night vs. fighting it. An ok decision I think as it was 11. I am only eating about 1100 calories both days. A little alarmed at my fat % today on fitday. Was 46% or something like that. I ended up eating eggs for two meals though. Better than usual. DH made sausage and perogies today for supper. I ended up eating a llittle sausage (pretty lean farmer sausage - do u have that in the US?) in a HUGE salad. Kids thought I'd lost my mind
11-04-2005, 12:26 PM
Sherri, I have that same issue with my fat %. It's kind of scaring me into not eating that much I think. I'm getting a tiny bit frustrated by the limits. But hey, I only got one more week right. I'll make it.
Absolutely you can make it. You've come this far. Overall I'm ok, more in control and "conscious" for sure. Ate 2 meals out today (not ideal) and had salads with some meat. Cals were kinda low though - 950. Don't know what else to eat...
11-05-2005, 08:29 AM
HI Scarlett... I am doing South Beach and love it... and nothing else seems to work.... so go for it.. My doc is satisfied with me being on it too, so get those fat cells unlocked!!! and pasta, btw.. is lower on the glycemic scale than you think.. can be safely incorporated into the diet... on phase 2 ofcourse.. .take care and good luck... India
11-05-2005, 03:33 PM
Thanks Sherri. I see that you and I are having the same issue. I get to about 800 calories and its the end of the day and I don"t want anything else to eat/ don't know what else I could eat. Yesterday I only had 577 calories! not purposefully, I just didn't want food. It was kind of a bad day in general though.
Thanks India. It's good to hear of someone else's success and I need a reminder that things get better/easier in phase 2.
11-05-2005, 07:50 PM
I'm loving it! I feel great; and thin! I'm sure it's all just in my head... but whatever works, right?
11-05-2005, 08:24 PM
Yeah girl. Whatever works! I'm glad you're feeling so good. With all my whining, I can't wait to weigh in. I know I will see good numbers on Monday!
11-06-2005, 09:15 PM
... I... am... so... hungover...
Oh yeah, and I had fun too. :)
My binge only involved wings, eating out way too many times to manage :( (MIL was visiting ) Sounds like you had more fun! Good thing its Monday tomorrow... Having trouble knowing what to eat.
11-07-2005, 09:29 PM
Yay! I'm down 7 for the week. Great start! But I know I got to eat more. Hopefully a strong loss will manifest itself after this week as well. Off to a good start today, I exercised this morning and ate 1199 cal.
11-08-2005, 01:35 AM
I didn't struggle today but I was also super occupied with other things so it didn't stay on my brain (as it were).
11-08-2005, 05:31 PM
I'm running out of things to eat... :|
Eggs, salads, chicken, broccoli, green pepper, cauliflower, lettuce, cheese... are all starting to get old. And I'm only 1/2 way through Phase 1. :( Anyone try anything new lately that is easy and has ingredients most people have in their house?
Sidenote: I made 'black bean brownies' from the recipes forum last night. they're so awful. oh God. :barf: But I'm about to lose my mind without chocolate.
11-08-2005, 06:52 PM
I've been out of things to eat. As for a sweet treat, if you like chocolate and peanut butter flavor. I suggest the following (if you haven't tried it already)
2tbs natural peanut butter ( I use chunky)
1 no sugar added fudgsicle
2tbs cool whip free
Put the fudgsicle in a bowl and put in microwave for 10 seconds. Scrape off stick. Add cool whip and peanut butter and mix well. Enjoy!
I find this to be quite yummy. Just remember that it uses your peanut butter/nut quota for the day. I ran out of peanut butter once and just mixed the cool whip and fudgsicle, it have a nice near*chocolate*ice*cream flavor. Hope this helps.
11-08-2005, 08:04 PM
I think it's not the foods, as it is the way we eat them. We tend to get in a rut with what we can do with the eggs, cheese, veggie combos.
I made a great "Turkey Divan." I take a Green Giant Broccoli & Cheese (in low-fat sauce) package and add cooked turkey or chicken. It kinda has a cassorole/comfort food type taste. All cheesy and bubbly. I love it for lunch.
I also made a tuna salsa with tuna, black beans, tomatoes, peppers etc and bought raw carrots slices that were particularly big for eating like salsa.
11-08-2005, 10:33 PM
Apryl, I read on another thread that you just joined Curves. Let us know how you like it. I have been thinking about joining but am apprehensive. But it'd be very easy, there is one about 2-3 miles from my house. Good luck with it!
11-08-2005, 11:15 PM
Shannon, it's basically .5 mile from my house... I had the little orientation tonight. I think I'm going to love it. Aside from the fact that I'll most *definetly* be the youngest person there... Why do I keep seeing this pattern in places I end up???
