Default Pcos

Hi all, I went to a dermatologist a few months back for my thinning hair and my facial hair, what he said is that he thinks I should be checked for PCOS. He asked me if I had regular periods and I said no, in fact in the last 4 months I have only had 1 period.
Is PCOS something that your family DR can check you for or is it something you have to go to a specialist for. I am really hoping that I do not have it but I know I need to get whatever it is checked out. Thanks for the help.

Your family doctor could order some bloodwork for you to start the diagnosis process, but if you do have pcos, then I would highly recommend seeing a specialist- an Endocrinologist. But to start, I would either go to your family doctor, or to your gynecologist and talk to them about your symptoms and have some bloodwork done.

There is a ton of information on this forum, so take some time and read through some posts, and see if any other symptoms people describe are what you are experiencing as well. Then write down all your symptoms and questions and talk to the doctor.

well it is comforting to know that I just called Mr Dr's office and told the nurse what I wanted to be checked for and she said "What is PCOS?" ...
I think I better find a specialist.

Hi Satine ... first of all I'd like to say that I hope you don't have PCOS! As for your PCP - just b/c the receptionist isn't aware of what PCOS is doesn't mean that your doc isn't ... however, I think I would either find an ob/gyn or an endo who specializes in PCOS ... you can do a google search for doctors in your area... better yet - I'm going to PM you some info to help you get started!

GL!
