Exercise! - October Walkers -- Walking Away the Pounds!

SunnyD Donna usually starts these, so I hope I'm not stepping on her toes by going ahead and getting started!
September is behind us and we had a great month! Whether or not we met our goals, we worked toward them and that's what counts. If you have trouble getting motivated, just do a little each day. Ten minutes of walking a day is better than doing nothing! Ten minutes twice a day gives you 20 minutes and you're on your way!
Whether you walk outside or to a DVD, whether you walk for speed or time or distance, it's movement that counts. Do it your way and how it fits with your lifestyle -- just do it!
I passed my September goal of 50 miles by walking 2 or 3 miles most days a week. I will be traveling a lot during October so I'm revising my goal to:
** At least 15 minutes of SOMETHING PHYSICAL everyday **
** NO SODAS!!! **
Let us know your goals and then keep us posted on how you're doing. Here's to a great October!

I didn't make my September goal, so I'm scaling it back to a more achieveable 30 miles for October. I'm already well on my way with 2 miles yesterday and a 5K (3.1 miles) today!
Happy walking!

Happy October Ladies!
I passed my goal of 50 miles for September (did 60 miles) but am sticking with the same goal for October. I have one week of walking left in the WATP book and will be cutting back my walking to 5 days a week instead of the 6 I have been doing after that. The weekends are busy for me sometimes but I have managed to get my walks in early except this weekend. TOM hit me hard and Sat. was bad. I thought I would walk today and still not feeling up to it. So...here's to a new month, and a new goal ladies.

Everybody sounds so enthusiastic! What a great way to start the month. Even when we didn't make our goals, we're reassessing them and making sure that they are doable for US. That's the best way to make sure that we stay on track.
Yesterday I did a 3-mile circuit, and today I did a 3-mile WATP. I'll be staying in a hotel the rest of the week, so I'll do stairs or walk outside or (my last choice) the fitness room.
Have a great week everybody and I'll check back in next Saturday!

My goal this month is 30 miles. I figure 1 mile a day, I can do that. I want to shoot for the 10,000 steps a day that they say is beneficial to your health but I realize that is like 5 miles a day...WAY TOO much for me right now, but do-able in the future! I look forward to checking in at the end of the week to find out how everyone is doing. Thanks for all the encouragement and support ya'll offer!

Good morning ladies~
Dinah~hey, any way you can get it in is good! And going up and down stairs a few times is a lot of steps. WTG on the two 3 mile walks!
Pam~a mile a day is a good start. I heard on the radio a couple of days ago that just a 30 minute walk at least 3 days a week will add 10 years to your life! So, WTG on your mile!
I got in my 3 mile walk this morning, wasn't feeling so great but I did it anyway and feel better.
Happy walking ladies! And have a great day!

Evening Ladies,
I got 3 miles in today. 2 miles at home with my Walk and Kick DVD and 1 mile WATP video with my MH students to calm them down and get them focused for the afternoon.
I did go to TOPS tonight and gained 3/4 of a pound. I think that has a lot to do with my TOM drawing very near. But I will just work harder to get it off and more next week.
Looks like everyone is getting their miles in and getting fitter and healthier.
Have a great evening.

Morning Everyone,
Looks like everyone is doing a great job hitting the sidewalks, trails and paths to get their walks in. I was able to do my WATP Express tape this morning. It was 2 miles long. So I have gotten about 15 of my 75 miles done so far this month. Yesterday was a bad eating day for me. I had cravings for pizza and had my dh take me out for some pizza last night for a snack. I only eat 2 small pieces and than stopped. The rest was brought home and I will eat some of it for dinner tonight with a bowl of salad. So that should help me get back on my normal eating schedule and not fall off of it like yesterday.
Hope you are all enjoying this lovely fall weather we are having.
Keep up the great work!

Luflic don't feel like you are a slacker. We all have a different pace and levels of fitness. Do what feels right for you don't push yourself too hard or be too hard on yourself. The best thing you are doing is getting out there and walking.

WOW! Everyone is doing great! I'm back from my trip and proud to report that I walked 3 days out of 5 while I was away...a total of 5 3/4 miles. I used the treadmill in the hotel one day, but I just really hate treadmills, so I walked outside the rest of the time. Sad to report, though, that it seems I gained 2 lbs, but now that I'm home I can get back into a routine.

Hi everyone,
Sounds like you are all doing a wonderful job. I have been really busy with teaching and my home stuff here lately. But I have always found the time to walk. So far for the month, I have walked 43 miles out of my goal of 75 miles. In fact, I had to get up this morning at 5:30 to get my family up and out the door by 6:45 for my stepsons' playoff game for football at 8. Then after they left I did my 4 mile super challenge tape and got ready for my workshop for school and went to that. No wonder I am a little tired this afternoon. LOL
Hope everyone is enjoying the nice fall weather. I hope to get my family out tomorrow to enjoy it with a hike at one of our local State Parks. Keep your fingers crossed that it happens! :) The kids have been wanting to go hiking for about a month now, but something always happens to come up that is more important. Well you all have a wonderful evening and keep those feet moving forward. :)

Haven't been able to exercise since the 14th because of joint problems. Last night I walked a gentle mile with Leslie so I'm at 20 for the month. Obviously won't make my 40 mile goal, but I'm happy to be able to walk at all!
Hi everyone. I'm new and would like to join in. I love this site & reading all of your inspiring entries! I think this will be a much needed inspiration to keep me motivated & accountable. I started this journey back in March, so far I've lost about 17 lbs. And, would like to lose another 10. It was slow, but huge for me, I have a hard time getting it to come off quickly or easy. I was motivated because of my class reunion, but this event was about a week ago, and I want to keep this strong, healthy, energetic feeling, but I seem to be the type that has to have a goal in mind to stay motivated. So, I love the idea of setting a mile goal for the month! My goal is going to be 75 miles for October. I have 54 miles logged in so far. I didn't walk today (Sunday) but got 5 miles in yesterday!!!

How does everyone decide what their goals will be? I've just started, although I am in not too bad shape, my hour long walk yesterday through the hills in my city left my quite breathless...
Also, what measures are you using to count distance? I guess I could just count time...like 10 hrs of walking a week?
Just asking all these questions as I am not too sure where to start....
Thanks,
Megan
Dinahgirl
10-26-2005, 08:39 PM
Hi Megan, those are good questions with lots of answers! Some people measure by distance and some by time. I think it depends on what your goals are, what your activity is, etc. For instance, if you're doing it for health, to lower your cholesterol, etc., most medical-types are saying 30 - 60 minutes a day, 3-5 times a week. I read an article today that said 12 miles of walking a week is as good as jogging. Figuring that a brisk walk is about a 15-minute mile, You could do that in 30 minutes, 6 times a week, or an hour 3 times a week. It really all depends on you, your time, what motivates you. I didn't set goals for several months until I had a good picture of what I was capable of and what I wanted to aspire to.
I try to do something most days of the week. It might be 30 or 45 minutes of walking, I might add some weights to that if I'm doing it with Leslie. I might do a 30 minute aerobic something and then do upper and/or lower. Tonight I did a 45 minute stretch routine using Karen Voight's Pure and Simple Stretch dvd. I mix it up a lot as you can tell. Some people do the same thing every day.
An hour walk first time out is a lot, even if you're in good shape. You need to have time to build your stamina, your feet and leg muscles, etc. On thewalkingsite (come) there's a beginner's walking program that starts with 15 or 20 minutes a day and gradually increases. If you do too much too fast, you run the risk of injury, shin splints, etc.
I'm sure others will jump on here with their thoughts as well.

Well, I got off track but this time I'm here to stay. :carrot:. I started back the 22nd and since that day I have walked a total of 7 and 1/2 miles on the track (local one about 1/2 mile to walk there) and 5 miles just walking to and from it! (3 and 1/2 today). So.. 12 and 1/2 so far. *excited*

Hi Megan, you can log it wherever you want or feel the most comfortable. This site is so huge and lose track of which thread is which, so I pretty much stay here for the exercise. However, I also log on FitDay, on President's Challenge, on my quit smoking support site, AND on an excel spread sheet I have. So I'm accountable all over the place!!! :dizzy:

Well, I should have read it before I posted it. I meant to say "I lose track..."
Oct. 26th - 4 mile express super challenge video
Oct. 27th - Walk & kick video - 2 miles
I'm up to 66 miles, of my 75 mile goal.
However, I've now developed a heel spur and am looking for some advice. I want to workout this morning, but not sure if I should push myself to do it or if I should let it rest instead. Has anyone dealt with this before and have some advice? Any would be very appreciated.
Thanks...

KG67 - I have had heel spurs before and have one now. Check out heelspurs.com. My advice is ice it, do the stretches they show on that site, and rest it if you can.
I did a 2-mile fatburner with Leslie.

I walked 45 minutes last night at a brisk pace. My pedometer says only a 1/2 mile. I think it's set up wrong. I guessed that I step about 1 1/2 feet with each step.

And again.. 2 1/2 :D
I took Friday off to rest my heel spur, and it hasn't bothered me since. I've been trying to massage and stretch more though. I think I just caught it early enough. I think I figured out what caused it. I bought some stretchie bands and I used it do help do some leg lifts while laying on my side. I think I must of over did it and put too much strain on my foot. I'm just so glad it's GONE now!!! I did buy some new Nike walking shoes yesterday, I can't wait to try them out this morning!
Sat. I walked 2 miles of my 4mile express video w/ Leslie. I also took my girl scouts to a local Halloween maze and walked at least a mile there.
I'm up to 69.5 of my 75 mile goal, so I'm going to really have to get busy today to meet my goal!!!

What a great month we all had! :carrot:
I had to reduce my goal somewhat because of foot problems, but I'm not getting too discouraged! I'll see the podiatrist Wednesday and hopefully get back on my feet.
Right now, wrap your arms around yourself and give yourself a great big hug! And always remember, if even you didn't meet your goal, you tried, and in trying, you moved, and in moving, you did more than you would have if you hadn't moved!!! :dizzy:

4 1/2 miles today which comes to a total of 21 1/2 over a 9 day period.. *w00t*
I'm so excited! I just joined earlier this month, and just completed my first goal. I had to walk 3 different times today, to get it all in, but I finally finished. I had a goal of 75 miles for the month, and I actually got in 75.5!!! :carrot: It feels so good, and I would of never pushed myself that hard if it hadn't been for the accountability of this site and Leslie's tapes. I just got a new set of her workouts in the mail today, it was WATP for ABs with the AB belt. I only did the 3 mile from the set, but really liked the music and atmosphere of the series.
Congrats to all who completed their goals, and if you didn't just keep moving anyway, and tomorrow's a new month to start over and try again, and at least MOVE~
Dinah, I'm so glad you're not discouraged. You're doing all the right things to correct your foot problems, and I'm sure you'll be back up and moving full force very soon and until then just do what you can! And, thanks so much for your help and advice with my foot pain. Thankfully I caught mine in time and all the great advice worked and all pain is now gone!!!
Looking forward to a great November. I guess the next step is to decide on our November goal... ;)
