October :fr: Already?!? Time flies when we're having fun!
Do the Cool Runners have any speciall October runs? I think Leanne has an October Birthday run? Anyone else?
I don't but I know that I am ENJOYING this wonderful cool weather!! I'm going out bright and early tomorrow for a 10k... Can't wait, it's been a few days since I've been out and I miss it!

I so agree with you Ilene I love October. I love the fall, I love jeans and windbreakers. I love it cause it's not too hot and not too cold right inbetween and not raining everyday! September has flown by whoosh and it was gone LOL.
As for me I had a free day guest pass for this expensive gym we have here and it was AWESOME. I loved being spoiled for a day with onsite daycare facilites and I tool lamariposta's advice and tried running intervals and ran a complete 5k in 38:42 Woohoo that's a new PR! Hoe great is that? Well on to more working out and easting the right things in moderation ;)

Ok so it's October but still like 100 degrees in Texas so I am not feeling the fall "vibe" yet. My friend and I are planning another 5-k race in two weeks so we have something to strive for. I would love to beat my last time (24:55) but this course is supposed to be more challenging so I will be happy with around the same time as well.
Question for you all--if you race, how often do you recommend? I know marathons and triathalons require lots of training but is it okay to do 5- or 10-ks pretty often (1x month etc?) Just curious on your thoughts....

Hi guys,
I've been on hiatus for a while--my training journal says since July 26th while I waited for my daughter to be born. The last part of the pregnancy was pretty rough on me. She was born last Saturday, Sept 24th by c-section and now on doctor's orders I've started walking again (see the maintainers thread if you want more details on my new DD). Made it about a mile today in 35 min. I'm taking it easy for now, but trying to rebuild some level of fitness so I can start running again in 5-6 weeks. I've walked 4 days in a row now. The first day was a block and back, and it was VERY tough, but it is getting much easier now as I heal.
Ilene, good to see you are still running. How goes the swim training? When is that triathlon?
MrsD, that gym sounds wonderful. I'm going to have to get advice from all you moms on this thread on how to balance the little ones with exercise time.
Liz, it is still high 90s here in Tucson as well, doesn't feel very fall-like to me either. Waiting for it to cool down. As for how often to race--I love to race, so my answer would as often as possible. If you are pushing for PRs and such though, I'd think once a month or so for a short distance race sound really reasonable to me. To me 10Ks are just the cruelest distance though; they really hurt, worse than either 5Ks which just aren't long enough to do that much damage, but much faster than a half or full marathon, which are done at a much more aerobic pace.
Glad to be back among the living again!
Anne

oh congratulations anne!!!! I'll be hopping over to the maintainers thread shortly to see the precious bundle of joy and it's great to read that your back out there. My best time to work out is early in the morning before the kids wake up but because you have a newborn that maybe doesn't even sleep all through the night yet someone else might be able to give you some more sound advice. Now that my kids are a little older and DH gets little worried about me running in the mornings, I run when the kids are at cheerleading and football practice.

Hi Anne Welcome back, and Congrats on easing into the workouts. Thanks for asking about my training, I'm swimming and I like it a lot although I really suck at it  ... The triathlon is August 06, plenty of time to train...One of the girls in my swimming class is doint the try-a-tri also, so it'll be fun for both of us...

Yes I am doing a run in Ottawa which also happens to be on my birthday....my mom has decided to come up, so I honestly think it will make me run even faster....YAY.............I am sooo excited....when I am done my race I am going to eat CAKE...hahahaha...well, maybe
Leanne
I've got nothing special planned for this month, just building up to my next 10k in November. I did 5k this morning, I'm amazed that I'm now thinking of that as a fairly "short" run!

I got out again this morning and made it just about 2 miles. It is a little rough getting up at 4 am to breastfeed and then go out at 5, but it just feels so good to not be pregnant, and doing something for myself, and I'll nap today later anyway. Took one of the dogs with me and he behaved himself nicely.
Ilene, good luck with that swim training. I really sucked at it too when I first started--it is such a skill to learn! My goal for my first race back is a sprint distance tri (800m/12mi/3mi) in mid-March. I think the toughest part of that will be losing the baby weight so I can fit into my race clothes!
Leanne, what a great birthday present. I'm sure you are going to run fast! It does seem to help when there is someone to perform for and I'm sure your mom is going to be just knocked out!
YP1, good luck with your 10K as well. I'm looking forward to the 'just' 5K days again as well. It is such a breakthrough to get there.
Anne
5k again today. I need to build distance back up again, but I'm a bit pushed for time at the moment and with a while to go before the 10k I'm happy to just be doing something manageable before doing too much more.

Hi ladies,
I am an October baby and just celebrated my 28th birthday!
Anyway 2.5 weeks until my half marathon and I am really excited!! I am really pleased how my training has gone. One more long run and then I taper and I cannot wait for that!
My fiance bought me a Garmin Forerunner 301 for my bday so I am enjoying it!
Cheers!

Is everybody hibernating already? We had a cold front come in last week and I am not looking forward to my outdoor runs in those low temps but so far I have still kept on track. Did my 6-miler yesterday then another 3 this morning with the possibility of an afternoon run with a friend. My "plan" calls for a 10-mile run next Sunday but since I substituted a 6-mi last weekend for the 8-mi I was supposed to do I might need to cut back. We will see. The next race is Oct 23rd.

Thanks for the invite Ilene!! I am excited to have found this site. I am a newbie. But I have been in this boat for some time. I am always looking for advise on how to improve my running. I have only been running for about 5 months. I am trying to reach a goal of doing a 15k in Mid-March of 2006. I need all the encouragement I can get. Just reading all of your posts has already inspired me.
Thanks!!

Hi gals,
I'm still alive, My internet has still not been connected at home so i'm using a pc at a cafe for now and with an almost two year old it's hard to get to a pc often. Now he's spending the day with his dad so i got a break. I'm still running, completed the c25k K last month and I feel great, I'm actually down to 130 lbs, I can't believe it, but I'm sure it has something to do with the scourching heat here, and me running around finaliing thing for my new job that should have been done a long time ago.
I have not had time to read up on all your accomplishments, but i'll say a general congrats and keep running.
Hi MrsDawson, Hi Ilene, sorry i can't remember everybody's name.
Congrats Anne!!!!

Ilene...c'mon, live a little and run in the rain! Haha I tried to use that raining excuse with my friend once and she said "you know it might be raining on the day of the race too and if we train in these conditions we'll have an edge on our competition" it ended up being one of our better runs even avoiding all the puddles at the park.
As far as my running, I did a 5-mi pace run this morning with intervals and I was so proud because I've been working up from 3 and I wasn't sure I could do the whole thing. I guess sometimes I surprise myself!

Tuesday it didn't rain at all, it was gorgeously cool... I love cool weather I still run in my shorts and it was only 10C out... The girls from the running group said that they run rain or shine... So I promise to go when it rains too because you're right LIz it could certainly rain on race day... I love this group it motivates me a LOT... We are doing a 5k on the 29th...

You girls are great. I am so ashamed. I didn't run yesterday or today. Of course I was at a dude ranch with work, but yall are talking about running in the rain. And I am making excuses just because my schedule isn't just the way I think it should be. I also promise to work harder at not letting things get in my way. I am back on schedule. I will run first thing in the morning. ;)

Dega -- Just so you feel really really bad ;) and that you work out with no excuses tomorrow.... I ran in the POURING POURING rain today for 25 minutes... I never stopped once or slowed down, it was awesome... It's the first, but not the last time I do that, I felt like a kid...

woohoo go Ilene! I just did my 4 miles strides run on the treadmill but after work will be running at the park. Only a 20% chance of rain though so I suppose I am lucky... my challenge is the 5-k next weekend will be in an area that is said to be somewhat hilly and it is totally flat here. We will see how it goes.

Hello all!
I haven't gotten to try out the running in the rain yet. Hey I live in Sunny Florida. But it has started to cool off a little. I ran 1 mile yesterday. I missed my weight class today because of scheduling conflicts but I managed to do a quick 30 min walk at lunch.

Hi!
Ilene- how right you are...... I might get to try out that whole running in the rain real soon! Luckily, it looks like if she stays on path that I will be to the north of her so hopefully a little rain and wind is all I will have to run through. :chin:
I ran 2.6 miles yesterday. I am on a every other day run schedule right now. SO tomorrow I will be doing at least the same.
WOW 20 of you running together.... I would be nervous too! It would really be nice to have a group like that to count on. I have just yesterday got a partner. Only she is just starting and I have been running for several months so it is going to be a struggle to find a happy medium. Yesterday I did 1.6 with her and the 1 on my own. I felt better having done the extra one on my own.
Oh yeah how could I forget..... I weighed in at WW yesterday and lost 3.2lbs. I am feeling really motivated!! Thanks for all your support!

10-20-2005, 11:46 PM
Dega -- In our group of gals, when we have slower runners that stray at the back, we loop around when we reach a corner or red light and join up to them again. If your new partner doesn't mind when she walks for a minute or so you can go ahead for 30 seconds and come back to join her for 30 seconds. It can be fun, and gives you a longer run in the long run ...

Ok so I was excited about my 5-k this morning..hoping to beat my time and all. Too bad the course was poorly marked and everyone ended up running closer to 4 miles instead of 3.1! Well I still came in first for my age group and had a good time so I can't complain. I am planning a 10-k soon....if I can't convince my running partner to do it with me I will still go by myself.

I did a 3-miler on the one decent treadmill at the gym today then tomorrow I will cross train to give my muscles a break. My next 5-k is in 3 weeks. Have a great Monday!
I've not stopped by here for a while so thought I'd stop in and say hello. I'm still running, mainly on the treadmill at the moment. Distances varying between 5 and 10k usually, I'm trying to build up to my next 10k race at the end of November (although I have a horrible feeling that my registration's been messed up at the moment).
I seem to be hooked, I was looking at proper running gear for winter in the sports shop today :dizzy:

Hi All,
I completed my first half-marathon this weekend at the Fallsview Casino Marathon at Niagara falls. I had a good time even though the weather sucked, I was cold and my motel room seemed rather sketchy. I ran in with my fiance so that was fun! I did have one potty break and that took time (there was one portapotty at each station so there was a line). As the half marathon and the full one started at the same time with the same finish line I had some marathoners pass me... Gosh those guys were cut, with LONG legs and very prominent hams and quads... It was so cool to run beside them even if it was just for one nano second (I also cheered them on as they passed by).
Anyway it was a good experience and I feel very proud of myself for finishing that. My time wasn't great, however with the potty break and not feeling 100% I didn't push myself too hard.
Anyway Hope the weather improves for everyone! I am heading down south in 2 weeks, hopefully that will be good!
Cheers!

I'm back up to walking 4 miles or so at a shot. I should get the go ahead from my OB to start running again next week. So far I'm limited to walking and swimming, but that is going well, and I'm regaining enough core strength from that so that my back doesn't hurt all the time. Really looking forward to running again, although I'm sure it is going to be a complete shock to marathoning pre-pregnancy and now having to basically start over, I'm guessing 30 sec to 1 min running at a time.

Anne, Welcome back! And congratulations on your little girl. You'll get back into things soon enough. Don't push yourself too much. You have surgery to recover from on top of 9 months of hormonal havoc on your body. It takes a while to feel like yourself again.
Ali, congratulations on the 1/2! The first one isn't for time, it's to finish. Next time you can set yourself a time goal.
Ilene, you've gone from treadmill running to running outside with a group. Wow. And a triathalon next summer? I'm impressed!
I'm still running. I ran a 10k race last saturday with dh. He's much faster than I am, but decided to run with me anyway. I'm glad he did. It was at night, through the Plains of Abraham. So the course was quite dark at parts. I've never run at night and did not like being unable to see where I was putting my feet. The course was also a bit more hilly than I'm used to. And there were some good gusts of wind. But thanks to dh pushing me, we finished just under 52 minutes. Which is another pb for me (previous 10k time was 52:41). Next year's goal is to get under 50:00.
No more racing for a while though. I'm currently enjoying not having a particular schedule. I plan to run about 40k/week with a 16-20k long run at least every other week this fall/winter. In late January I'll ramp back up to half marathon training for May. If that goes well, I'm thinking of running the full marathon here at the end of August next year.

"Life happens when you're busy making plans"... I was planning on running the hypothermic half, I was planning on really running hard for the national capital half marathon next may... However plans have changed..I ran my half-marathon last week and wasn't feeling 100%. I also was due, didn't come Sunday, or Monday etc.... Plus I was feeling crappy all the time... So yup, a test on Wednesday and One on Thursday both came up with double pink lines so I am preggers.... My fiance and I are happy about it and I have told my support network since I want their support no matter what happens. I have never been pg before so this is completely new to me. I am excited, happy, nervous and scared...
Anyway I don't have a gym membership right now, however I think I may get one once I go into my second trimester since Ottawa is super icy and I don't want to slip. I do plan on keep up with exercising though... I heard its benefits are awesome for the baby, delivery and even for getting back into shape after...
Took this week off of running though since my foot was in pain... with icing, massage and rest it's almost back. I am hoping to run tomorrow.
MrsD: Thanks, however I don't think I have ever finished anywhere close to first for my age group in a 10K... I am a penguin when I run;)
Cheers!

Sweater Girl, congrats on the pregnancy! That is great news!! And you can definitely keep up your exercise routine just lowering the intensity as you get closer to your due date.
I did a pace run on Wednesday and alternated between 6.5 and 7.5 mph and then did a 3-miler Thursday with incline on the treadmill. I think I may take today off from running and just plan on my long run tomorrow to even out the week.
Anyone doing any Halloween races? They had some cute ones where you can run in costume but my next one is Nov 19th.

Sweater Girl, congrats on the pregnancy! Yeah, a gym membership would probably be a good exercise idea for the winter. Pregnancy totally changes your sense of balance. I think I fell at least once per pregnancy with my January babies and that was just walking outside.
Mrs. D, good for you for keeping up with running and walking. 13.6 miles isn't bad! Especially before your long run.
Lizzbabe, the race I did last weekend was a hallowe'en race. I wore a kids pumpkin costume, so it just went to my waist and didn't get in the way while I was running. My running pants and long sleeve shirt were black anyway.
I'm taking my 3 year old to her dance class this morning and running a quick 5-6k while she's dancing. That should give me my goal 40k for the week. Dh will have the other two kids at the pool for their swimming lessons. Tomorrow morning I plan on a 16-18k long run.

Ali,
Congrats on your pregnancy! Runner's World has an excellent book called Running & Pregnancy by Chris Lundgren, plus some stuff online in their women's section. If you don't have any complications, and you feel up to it, you could keep running, although most people do recommend that you don't race. I've heard of people running up until their due date, but it does get hard enough at some point that most people do back off some. Gym membership does sound like a good idea though.

Hi everyone! It's good to read about everyone's successes lately. Hopefully it will help get me back on track. I've gone a full month without exercising, between work and a nasty flu, it just wasn't possible. Unfortunately, when I get sick, I tend to eat ice cream all the time, so I've gained about 6 pounds. I even skipped my fencing classes 3 weeks in a row!
But, I'm going to the Y after work today and am going to get back on track! I can't run outside any more for the year--the cold weather kills my asthma. But, I don't mind the treadmills, and am thinking of getting started swimming again.
