Hello all, and welcome to a new, fun-filled week of sweat, heavy breathing, and happy sighs after having accomplished the deed! Yes, that's it.....just what you were thinking: EXERCISE!! I speak here of cardio and weight-training; yoga, dance, and pilates. You know what I'm talking about! ;)
I'll start: I biked for 22 minutes on my exercise bike, going a little over 5 miles. For most of it, I'm biking 15-16 mph. I'm not able to do my old HIIT intervals routine of 23 mph spells; for now, this is great for me. I'll get it back, bit by bit! :ebike:
So, peeps, if it's :wl: or :tread: -- whatever you're doing.....let us know right here. Sing it! Sing it proud! :D

Well that's not what I was thinking when I read your description but I'll stay on topic here. LOL I started this weekend out wanting to really get back into exercise. I went with my buddy for a bike ride on Saturday. We were going to go 7 to 10 miles out and then come back. Well 5 miles out he had a blowout and had to ride my bike back to the truck and pick me up. I can't walk to well so walking back was out of the question. So that day was a bust.
Then yesterday I went to the YMCA's outdoor pool to get some laps in. I always wear my shirt just because I'm embarrassed of all the skin I have. They always understood inside and let me do it. Outside I was told you have to stay in the shallow end if you wear a shirt. So that made that day a bust.
So today I did it all. I went to the Y and did 1/2 hour of laps in the pool then 15 minutes on the bike and then did the weight machines. I feel great. Sure does feel good to do something.

Howie: What's the big deal about you wearing a shirt in the pool? Why do they restrict you to the shallow end? This makes no sense to me....

07-11-2005, 03:15 PM
Yes me either. They seem to think it's going to come up over your head and drown you. I can see maybe restricing kids from wearing baggy shirts in the pool but I tuck mine in once I'm in and believe me I'm not going to let it come up over my head. LOL

Just as Howie’s i rode my bike on Sunday. Did 60 Km on nice country roads….had to sprint the last 15 km due to thunderstorm building up….my legs are just finished today!!! Luckily, our massage therapist at work will try to fix things up before I leave.
I’m also rod my nike bike to work today, and plan to do so tomorrow and Thursday.
On Wednesday and Friday, I will do laps at the pool. Cannot wait to go camping so I can do laps in lakes…..quite different and far more relaxing
Howie, I totally understand you regarding loose skin. As I’m down at 245 from 335, I’m starting to get some as well….
Ps. Howie: you can avoid the inconvenience of flat tires if you buy puncture proof tubes. They are much more thicker than the conventional ones. They sell them at good bike stores

That is what my friend said he was going to do. They are both his bikes. I want to get one but I need to get a shed first. I was going to buy a bike off my friend but decided not to because of lack of storage.

I am a WW-Repeater - rejoined last week for the 44th time! And needless to say, in-between my trips back to WW's I completely slacked off on all exercise. But I'm happy to say that I did 5 miles on the exercise bike tonight!! Of course it took me 30 (ok, 31) minutes to go that 5 miles, but I'll take it. :ebike:

So far today I've done Leslie's WATP 1-mile, minus the weights. Woo hoo!! Hello, Leslie, my old friend.... It was a real challenge for me, but I did it! I'll work up to my old 3# hand weights, but for now, I'm just so excited that I was able to finish it the mile!! :dancer:
Later on this afternoon, I'm going to do my standard 20 minutes/5 miles on the exercise bike.
My goal for this week is to do 40 minutes of cardio every day, and 3 full body weights workouts (around 45 minutes to an hour apiece.) I expect the scale to stay put initially with water weight, which will be a bummer, but I know it's absolutely the best for my health, strength, stamina, and dress size! And I'm sure the scale will comply soon enough.
Howie, that's CRAZY about the shirt/shallow end thing! Of all the poor judgment calls made in the name of upholding policy, that one has to be the worst I've heard of. :nono: So absolutely ridiculous. I would suggest scheduling a meeting with a supervisor, so you can sit down and discuss it rationally with someone who can make a decision. Explain your medical issues and dependency on the use of their pool, but don't mention that they've been letting you do it at the inside pool, just in case the supervisor the supervisor doesn't see reason. You wouldn't want them to put the kabosh on it! I'm really sorry you have to deal with this bureaucratic stupidity, but I know that with your charm and diplomacy, you'll get them to make the saner call. :)

I am going to talk to the person in charge of the pools. So we will see how it goes.
Today was day two of my new lifestyle. I don't know if I mentioned it in any other thread but I am going to start working to become a Personal Trainer. In order to do that I need to get myself in the best shape possible. So that means hitting the Y every weekday and maybe even Saturday. I am going to buy the material off of a local woman who sells everything you need to study and pass the ACSM Certified Personal Trainer test. The material is only $50. I'm not sure how much it will be to take the exam but I will find out. I plan on doing it next spring. That is my goal for being at my goal weight and I am hoping to be physically fit by then but that may take more than six months. So we will just play that by ear.
Anyway today I did 15 minutes on the bike then 5 on the elliptical and then another 15 on the bike. No wights today that is on Mon, Wed and Fri. It was the first time on the elliptical and I liked it. It will take a while to build up but man what a good work out.

Just all pleased with myself today:smug:
I did my 8 Minute Moves today (Boring but effective! I am building up some pretty snazzy new muscles in my arms and my shoulders are definitely looking sexy, if I may say so myself. Oh, and did I mention my strong legs which are looking meaner and leaner day by day? Ready to do some major *** kicking (well actually major target kicking, but '***' just has a better ring to it) this fall in TKD class!)
Got my cardio in today. 10 minutes of jumping rope (in intervals; steady pace for 1 minute then as fast as I could for 30 seconds) followed by 10 minutes of jogging in place (alternating lifting knees high and kicking my own butt with my heels)

35 minutes on treadmill with an increase in incline but I forgot to glance at my speed. :o Guess I got too caught up in my old disco CD and singing off-key loudly to "I Will Survive". :dizzy:
I immediately jumped into the pool knowing I had to increase from 150 laps to 189 laps of fast, furious swimming in order to say I swam a mile!

I tried bike riding last night for the first time in years (I should have waited because it was about 100 degress outside) and I've rediscovered long forgotten muscles in my legs. I managed about 25mins and then headed back home for another 20 mins on the treadmill. After that it was 10 mins of abs and another 10 mins of upper arms.
I have to say I'm really proud of last night's effort!!!
Way to go everyone for keeping at it!

This afternoon I did a full body weights workout: 2x12 of the following:
Squats
Stiff Legged Deadlifts
Lunges
Lat Pushdowns
Shoulder Presses
Bicep Curls
Bench Presses
I also did 1x15 unweighted Calf Raises.
Warm-up was 10 minutes on the treadmill.
I was planning on also doing 20 minutes on the exercise bike, but I'm going to have to play that by ear after the degree to which that weights workout kicked my ***! :o I'll let you know. ;)

Just a question for you exercisers. I do a hydrofit (heavy duty water aerobics) class four days a week and a 1 hour circuit training class two days a week followed by another 1/2 hour of free weights.
I'd like to add a yoga class, but it either conflicts with the hydrofit, is 1/2 hour after the hydrofit or is offered about an hour after I get done with spending two hours in the gym. Is there such a thing as too much exercise back-to-back? Do you think if I traded one hydrofit class for the yoga class that my cardio efforts would be hindered?
I hate to give up one hydrofit class, but I wonder if I'll be too tired if I take a yoga class that's offered after the hydrofit or circuit training. The yoga class was mentioned by my neurologist as something I might want to consider, but right now my weight loss comes first.
Any suggestions?

I'm sure there is a way to get too much exercise back-to-back. I think if you are doing a few different things b2b and not just the same exercises working the same parts of your body there shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure to keep hydrated, have a light snack between classes, etc.
I don't any reason you'd have to give up your hydrofit class to give yoga a try.
I don't think it would harmful to take the yoga class after hydrofit or circuit training because it is a relaxing stretching workout and from what I've heard, stretching is best to do after your workout anyway, so yoga would be an nice addition to your gym time.

I would like to get stationary bike for workouts but don't know if I would like it, which ones are best or how much to spend to get a decent one. Any advice would be appreciated. :)
As for exercise today, I did my 8 Minute Moves. Worked out the Triceps and Biceps today.
Also cleaned house (picking up toys, vacuuming, moving heavy furniture around) for about 3 1/2 hours today.

I used to have an exercise bike when it wasn't safe to cycle around outside because of loony drivers. Since I love cycling, I thought I'd enjoy it, but to be honest, it bored me rigid--even when I listened to music or watched telly when using it. I ended up giving away to my friend who loves it! Different strokes and all that. I'm pleased I now live in an area that is pretty bicycle-friendly since I don't want to get a car and avoid public transport as much as possible.
My advice would be to try a lot of different ones at the store (because they all feel slightly different, depending on your height, etc.), and think hard about whether you'll use it it a regular basis. If so, it will probably be worth the investment.

Oh. My. Goodness. THE PAIN!!!
Yesterday's weighted squats, lunges, and stiff-legged deadlifts apparently were very effective, because I am suffering horribly today! My quads and hamstrings are screaming, and the glutes are defintely grumbling! The rest of me hurts as well, but the legs are the worst. :(
I am trying to muster the wherewithall to do even 20 minutes of cardio today! Both the exercise bike and the treadmill are one flight down in the basement.....even getting up from the couch is excrutiating! I'm vacillating between thinking it would help me to at least bike -- and thinking it might be best to give myself a rest. Is the latter a cop-out? I don't know! :dunno:
When I figure it out, I'll let you know. :chin:
BarbaraAnn
07-14-2005, 09:26 PM
No... it is in no way a cop-out. Your body is telling you that parts of it really, really need a rest and it's best to listen so as not to injure yourself.
I had the same issue this morning from having done the treadmill yesterday at an increased incline and swimming a mile. I woke up with my shins just screaming for mercy so no treadmilling today. I think I will alternate days with it. Instead I swam, did sit-ups and some arm exercises with weights.
It's all about variety.

Alright, I guess I came to a conclusion, in that I ended up not doing any cardio today! With weights it really is a case of No Pain, No Gain. I'm presently in the "pre-gain, oh the pain" period!
I don't care how much I hurt tomorrow -- I'll be doing some cardio! Whether it's :ebike: , :tread: , or WATP -- or some combination thereof! -- I'll be doing 40 minutes of something! Then on Friday it'll be more :wl: and more cardio. I'm my own scary :drill: , I swear! :dizzy:

07-15-2005, 07:14 PM
Ok!! My conscience is once again clean: I did a half hour on the cycle, at an easier pace than normal, I went 7 miles in the 30 minutes. I'd thought I'd do 40 minutes, but with the way my legs are feeling, I'm letting myself get away with just the 30. (Today, I'm good cop! )
I had planned to do another full body weights workout tomorrow (along with more cardio) but I really think I did so much with my legs day before yesterday, I'd be wiser to stick to just the upper body tomorrow. I thought I could pull it off, but clearly if I'm going to do legs 3 times a week, what I did was too much! I can't even lower myself into a seat without assistance, and going up and down stairs is AGONY! Don't get me wrong; I feel just GREAT about my results, but now I know that at this point I'd be better off alternating the squats and lunges, rather than doing them both (AND the stiff legged deadlifts) on the same day. I'm learning where I am physically -- now I know!
How's everyone else doing?

Wooo Hooo!!! I actually have exercise to report here!! Tonight I spent some time in our pool -- but this time I didn't just laze around. I did a bunch of different little exercises for my arms and legs and stomach, then walked around the pool ten times. Our pool is a 21' round, and it isn't level :D One end is almost a foot higher then the other (mostly under water level). So walking around the pool, you are almost walking uphill then back down. And the resistence of the water changes as the water gets deeper then shallower again. My legs feel it now!!

Woo hoo, Darla, Howie, and Barbara!! :cheer: You guys are doing great!! :cp: :cp:
So far today I've got in the following:
* 30 minutes cycling, going 8.25 miles (there's resistance; my bike doesn't do "levels" but I'd put it probably at a level 4 I think -- I don't want it to have too much resistance.) I followed this immediately, while my heart rate was still high, with.....
* 20 minutes upper body weights workout, doing 2 sets of 12 reps each of: One-Arm Dumbbell Rows, Shoulder Presses, Dumbbell Bench Presses, One-Arm Tricep Extensions, and Bicep Curls.
Still to come is the WATP 1-mile. I'll update once that's done.
Hope everyone's movin' and groovin' this weekend!! :dancer:

Leslie Sansone.....ok, tangent here: Lorraine, for some crazy reason, cannot retain the name, "Leslie Sansone." She knows her by sight, and knows she does all the WATP workouts -- but she insists on calling her, "Suzanne Crimmons." :dizzy: What is up with that?? :dunno: I'll even refer to the workouts as Suzanne Crimmons, as in, "I'm going to go do a mile with Suzanne Crimmons." Crazy.
So I guess I'll say, in honor of my inexplicably wacky beloved, that I did Suzanne Crimmons' WATP 1-mile after dinner. :dancer:
It's been a pretty good exercise day! 50 minutes cardio, and a good upper body workout -- I lifted to failure on every exercise, and I feel a little sore already! (Even doing the arms with no weights in the WATP workout was pretty challenging, since I did it AFTER the UB weights.)

I haven't had a free minute to post for the last couple of day, but I'm happy to say that I did still find time to get in some exercise.
Friday - 5 miles on the bike.
Saturday - 5 miles on the bike, the 2 mile WATP tape and I took a 3 mile walk outside.
Today I've put in an hour on the exercise bike. Not sure of the mileage since I accidently pressed the reset button when I was trying to increase the level, but I know that I at least did 10 miles. And I threw in the WATP 2 mile brisk walk.

Saturday: 6 am run/walk, don't know how many miles but we were moving for about 1 hour, and I ran (slowly! but I ran) for at least half of that time; 30 minutes of Kum Do (great shoulder/back/arms workout); 20 minutes of volleyball; lots of walking to the bathroom, beach, ect.; 20 minutes of swimming
Sunday: 6 am run/walk, only about 45 minutes today, ran for only about 20 minutes walked the other 25. 1 hour swimming before heading home.
