I was reading an article in the July issue of Shape magzine (p. 102) and it said that ...

"If you're overweight, the pill may not prevent pregnancy as well as it does in normal weight women" it goes on to say " "those with a BMI upward of 32, which is considered obese, had a 70% greater risk". Very Interesting.

My daughter had gained some weight and when she went in to get an exam before renewing her BC pills, she was told that the BC pills were no longer effective because of her weight. She's since lost some weight, but the doc did put her on different birth control.

A woman I worked with was prescribed a double dose of the contraceptive pill because of her weight. I'm guessing she was around the 250 pound mark, although she never said.

I've never been told that ever. I'll have to ask my dr about that with my next visit.

I have never been told this either! And I used to be on the pill until I switched to an IUD. My doc did say that if I lose a consideral amount of weight, as I will!, that I will need to have a new IUD inserted because the old one could shift around as excess weight is lost.

OMG!!! I guess it's a good thing hubby "got fixed" then. I got pg with both of mine while using bc & I was as heavy as I am now. So, I guess I'll be EXTREMELY?? fertile once this weight comes off?!?!

Yeah, I've heard that- but it's still like a 96% effectiveness or something like that- I freaked out when I heard it though.

Me too!!! Fortunately I got "Christmas" in August last year....It was nipped in the bud/balls... Funny, it didn't take much argument after the pregnancy as it did before the pregnancy.

I never used the pill but couldn't get pregnant for some reason. Then, I lost my weight and BOOM.. we had a bun in the oven! :)

The way I look at it, whatever's meant to be will be.... I've had 3 people I know (who aren't overweight), get pregnant while on the pill!

I've been on the pill for 5 years now, and I'm sure hoping I don't get pregnant... I just need a little more time for me & Steve before a baby comes along. However, if I somehow did end up pregnant... I would embrace it and love every minute of it! ;)

My dr mentioned that to me when she gave me the script. I didn't get pg while on the pill (I had stopped taking it because we wanted to get pg). And like Celina, I know women, who were normal weight and on the pill, who got pg anyways.

I'm on the pill now for the first time ever (been taking it a month). I was always told I couldn't take it because I had Hepatitis A as a child - which does damage to your liver and the pill is hard on your liver...but this doctor said we should try it and so far so good. I don't plan to be on it long...DH plans to have things permanantly taken care of. ;)

For me, I would love to have one more (we have two) but my health was so poor during both pregnancies and I had SO many complications that I've had three doctors now tell me that, though it's always up to me, it would be best to not try for more children. Kind of a hard blow for me since I always pictured having 3 or 4 kids...but, I'm coming to terms with it and I love the 2 I have to the ends of the earth. I'm on the pill in the meantime because it's just so hard to take away to possibility completely...I'm really struggling with the finality of it...

ANYWAY - It NEEDS to work for me so hopefully it is. :)

As an aside, my best friend from childhood wasn't planning on having any kids - she now has 2 - one conceived while she was on the pill and the second one while she had an IUD. Eeek!

anyone know what the threshhold for effectiveness is? I'm 5'6ish and 217. and my doc didn't tell me anything. I'm on it to try and get my period regulated, so I hope it works!
