South Beach Diet - Phase I Start - Monday, 23rd

Hi all, I'm starting over. I started SB in January of this year, went off for a while, switched over to Atkins, fell off that....finally decided I was tired of being fat and had to do something for good this time. Hubby has never dieted with me, I'm thinking that's why I've failed so many times. He's gonna do it with me this time, maybe it will help keep me on track....also daughter is doing it too, doctor approved it. We are all going to weigh in monday a.m. and measure and i'm kinda scared to see what the scale says.....anyway, I'm gonna check in here everyday so you ladies can keep me on track! See ya on the beach :D

Good morning, Jenn and Summering. I merged your two threads. I am sure there will be others joining you today.
Please be sure to read all the lists and hints in the FAQ Section and post in this thread about how it's going. The MODs pop in with comments as do other experienced Beachers.
I'm halfway through a Phase I restart but had a bad weekend and probably should be joining you chicks!

I throw my hat in the ring with you guys! I started last week but over the weekend I was not as strict as I would have liked to be. So I am starting anew today! I went out yesterday with my mom and I got all sorts of healthy food for me to make and take with me. SF Jell-O and some chicken and stuff. Very exciting, I think! So, on a new day with Phase I! Two weeks to go.. Ugh, 2 weeks!

Hey everyone,
I started Phase I today, and I'm new to this community. This is the first low-carb diet I have ever tried, and I think it will work really well for me as I've always struggled with blood sugar and have a history of diabetes in my family.
I'm looking forward to the heart benefits as much as everything else. I'm 25 years old and am starting to show signs of high cholesterol, even though I only have about 20-25 pounds to lose.
Had some scrambled eggs with 2 percent cheese slice today for breakfast. I'm drinking my water here at work, and I've brought a part-skim cheese stick for a snack. So far so good.

Hi! I'm new, starting today -- need to lose those last pesky 130 pounds :) I've dabbled in South Beach and other low carb plans but never followed through. I now have a whole month without a deadline, or a crunch period coming up (that I can predict, anyway!) and thought that would give me enough time to really do this right. I'm 55, have been dieting most of my life. My lowest adult weight was about 190. Went up to 230 15 years ago, and then zoomed up from there. Time to zoom down! Glad to meet all of you :)

Good for you chickies at stocking up on OP foods and tossing the stuff that isn't on plan. It helps so much! If you know you have events coming up where the food will be tempting, make a plan now for how you will handle it or just don't go. Cheating in Phase 1 really sets you back and you need to start over if you cheat, even a little. In Phase 2, the plan is much more forgiving of small cheats, but in Phase 1, you need to be strict. :coach: You know? :) I know you can do it! :cheer:
Remember, SBD is NOT a low-carb diet. It's a good carbs, good fats diet. We don't worry about how many carbs we are eating...we worry about what kinds of carbs we are eating. Don't fall into the "buy everything that says low-carb" frenzy, okay? We're aiming at eating lots of unprocessed foods. Yum! :T
And don't forget to get your veggies and water in. At least 4.5 cups of veggies a day (that means you probably need them at all three meals, including breakfast, and at least one snack) and 64 oz of pure water (no, soda and crystal light don't count).
Welcome to the beach...I think you'll love it here! :D Returnees, we saved your towels...the cabana boys are fluffing them up right now. ;)

Morning chicks. Today is tuesday May 24th I am jumping back on the wagon today. Not sure what happened to my Monday but I am here now and thats what counts. Time to start treating this body better again. I really like the WOE I can't understand why I keep falling off the wagon. Maybe I need to stop thinking about it as a diet maybe that way I will stay on plan. In Ty's words " WE CAN DO ITTTTTTT". :)

JBhair, welcome to the Beach. You may feel a little tired as you detox. Have you checked out the revised Phase I Food List and the Emergency Handbook? Lots of hints there.
Milk is definitely allowed on Phase I. I'd limit the Diet Coke and stick to caffeine free a it can slow your weightloss, the coke that is! Keep on with it and ask questions. this Forum is all about support.

Hi All - hope phase 1 is progressing well for you. Yesterday I had the priveledge of watching DH drink wine and today eat chocolate. mmmmm......
Yesterday went mostly OK for me, but I had to remind myself that I was going to stick to Ph.1. Today was better but I overdid the peanuts. I had 2 eggs w/spinach for b-fast, a slice of ham/cheese w/green beans and V-8 for lunch, and feta w/green beans and peanuts for dinner. I had more than 30 peanuts, though. OOPS. I also got in a 45 min. walk after dinner, and had a glass of milk to round out the evening.
Today I went to the market and got some fresh fixins for a few days worth of salad, and I think I'll make a yogurt onion dip for the extra veggies.
I didn't have any snacks today, but for you newbies, be sure to plan your two a day.

Hi All ... I'm afraid I never made the start on Monday as planned but I am getting ready to start tomorrow . I went shopping and bought all the staples for phase 1 .
I bought some LF turkey pepperoni , pistachios , veggies and hummas .
I also bought some chickpeas and curry for lunch .
Is anyone taking metamucil ?
Did anyone need to cut down on exercise at first , because of being tired and headaches ?

Just checking in, I hope I haven't duplicated this message but if I have...sorry! I am trying to get replies correctly nested.
Day 3 and so far so good. I did have a headache on Monday evening which I never experienced during my first Phase I. Oh well, nothing that a little aspirin couldn't take care of. I am getting my exercise in but getting up so early has been a little rough but afterwards I feel great.
I am already starting to think about Phase II and my reintroduction plan for the Phase II allowable foods. I know I am supposed to slowly add them, which I didn't do last time. Anybody have any good tips or suggestions?

Its hump day -
Little Chick - great job resisting the ice cream with the family
summering - good job on the plannnig. Planning is key. As for the metamucil, yes many folks take it during phase 1. make sure you purchased the sugar free kind. Also, yes most people don't exercise during ph. 1, for the reasons you mentioned. They add it in after ph. 2 has been underway for a few days.
Schatzi (treasure in German, right) - welcome to the boards. You've found a great support forum at 3FC, and a great way of eating for life with SoBe. Many have found proven results and good food, too!
Nilla - as far as moving on to ph.2, most people add in one carb a day or every other day (either a fruit or whole grain), and do that for a week to check their progress. The results are different for everyone so be sure to track what you add and see how it affects your losses. There have been many threads about this very topic in the past. Sorry I can't locate them at the moment, but you could do a search of "moving on to ph. 2" or " scared of phase 2" and the like to pull up some discussions of this in the past.
Keep up the great work, everyone - its worth it!!

hey chicks, day 3 is almost over....I've been doing pretty good, I'm trying to stay away from the scale since my mood for the day depends on what it says. Anyway, had a headache Monday and Tuesday but feeling all better today, went for a 45 minute walk pushing the little one in her stroller, also did 30 minutes of strength with dumbells.........hope you all are having a great day!

Hi, I'd like to join in. I started Ph 1 afer a month on a very low calorie diet--shakes and one small meal a day. I transitioned into SB on Sunday and Monday and I am fully following it now. I have at least 85 lbs to lose and then we will see how it goes.
So far I am finding the plan pretty easy to follow though I just found out I have had too many pistachios today and am supposed to be drinking milk. I guess I have an old book. I think having gone through total deprivation for the last month, that it has made Ph 1 easier for me to adjust to. I have had no sugar, no breads, no carbs at all basically other than vegies for the last month so I don't know for sure if I need to do Ph 1, but I figure it can't hurt.

Welcome! :D Julie, check out the FAQ, especially the Emergency Guide that's stuck there. AdiaFaith did a great job compiling the links in that. :)
You probably won't see as much loss in Phase 1 as people who were eating a lot of carbs will, but it will definitely get you on the right track. You'll definitely want to check on the updated food lists. :)

Did some light strength this a.m. with dumbells and taking kiddos to the park after school to walk and let oldest ride her bike
For you ladies who eat yogurt, try adding 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, so YUMMY! plus I've read that cinnamon is great for weight loss, helps speed metabolism. Hope you ladies have a great OP day

Yep, I am figuring my dramatic loss has already happened. That is okay. I was really scared about regaining weight initially when I started back to a more normal food intake and that hasn't happened at all so far. That is a huge thing for me so i am feelign great.
I had that Peanut butter cup dessert that is in the Phase 1 recipes last night. Oh my goodness! That was the best thing I have had in a really long time. I told DH I didn't know if it was because I had been totally deprived or if it was really that yummy, but to me it was fab!!!
I had made one of the ricotta desserts and it was pretty gross in my opinion--couldn't get past the texture. Told DH I am going to the store and went and bought all the ingredients. Gonna use the peanut butter with my celery for my afternoon snack.
Anyone else feel like they have eaten more vegetables this week than at any other time in their lives!! :dizzy: Sheesh. Somehow sometime in the last year or so, I have grown to like V8 so that is a big help especially in the mornings as I just can't bring myself to vegies at 9 a.m.
Have a good one all!!

I started on 5/24. Haven't had a headache yet, took the advise from other to add some beans (1/3 C or so) in with dinner. I couldn't help myself and weighed this morning down 2lbs in 2 days. I know it won't continue like that but it's enough motivation to continue on.

Hi guys how was everyone's first week? Mine went well though I haven't lost any weight at all. I feel good though and feel thinner though I haven't measured in awhile.
After reading the other thread about what you couldn't personally eat during Ph 1 or it would stall your weight, I am worried a bit about the pistachios I have been eating. I think I will drop them this week and see if it makes a difference.

Hi disneymom, sorry I missed your post...
I love Nuts - especially picstachios - they were basically a everything day for me ( and I think a big culprit in my weight gain overtime) . ALthough we are allowed nuts in P1 and on SBD , I decided not to include them at all , at this point. Maybe this week try eliminating Nuts all together - and replace them with another source of proteing/fat....

I'm still hanging in there. I have (not including today) 4 more days on Phase I. It hasn't been too bad and am now kicking myself for not getting back on board sooner. I am such a procrastinator!
Way to go Schatzi on the lost poundage!!
xJenn, I know what you mean about adding the breads/fruits back in. I have to be very very careful since that seemed to be my downfall last time. I might use your suggestion and go everyother day.

Good to see there are some of us still around, lol
Schatzi - WTG on the 8 lbs so far , I've got a bad problem with the nuts, for the first few days of Phase I, I ate 2 TBS of Peanut Butter at lunch everyday, stopped that after a few days and the weight loss really sped up.
Nilla - Last time that I was on SBD, when I started Phase II, I had the same problem....after I started adding back in some fruit and whole grain bread I got sloppy with it and started adding in too much because I love fruit and I love whole grain-wheat breads....gonna have to be careful this time-after we start Phase II let me know how you're doing with the fruits/breads thing

Hey guys!! How is it going?
I am happy to report that for the end of Ph 1 I am now down 1.5 lbs. Not much I know, but remember I was really worried about putting on some weight when I got back to eating real food. So, I am glad. I have also lost (total) 4 inches around my hips, 3 at my waist and 4 around my bust and that just blows me away!!
This weekend was pretty off prog for me, but I made the decision to do it and feel fine about it. We went to a wedding where they had a chocolate fountain and I definitely did partake! Not over the top, but I didn't reall limit myself either. However, I was very careful with all of the other food I ate that day and I did dance a lot with hubby! I also drank lots of water (oh yeah, there were those two Kahluha and creams--definitely NOT SBD friendly) Still, we had a great time and I feel no guilt at all.
I did notice that yesterday I felt much more tired than I have for quite some time. Interesting to say the least!!
I did add in a piece of whole grain bread last Thursday and Friday and had no added cravings and most days I have not had the pistachios. I did have them two different days when I just really wanted something snacky and was a bit tired of celery.
I am a little nervous about this ph 2 thing and am really goign to work on journalling. It didn't seem so important on Ph 1 when my choices were so limited, but I know I need to get to it now so I can keep track of what I have had and the results.
How is everything going for the rest of you? Did you survive Ph 1??

Today is my first day of Phase II. According to the scale this morning I have lost 5 pounds since starting. I was hoping for a little more but I am going to try and not let it discourage me. I still don't know what I am going to reintroduce today...I haven't really planned for it so I better think of something fast.
I am holding steady on my exercise so that is another positive.
I know this has probably already been addressed in the forums but I will go ahead and ask it here for now. What constitutes a cheat or slip up bad enought to go back to Phase I. Is it if you start experiencing cravings? That just seems kind of ambigous to me, I could rationalize that I have cravings all the time if I really thought about it. Any thoughts?

Nilla,
I thought the idea was that if you went off enough that you gained back some weight that you were to return to Ph 1 just until you lost the weight you had gained.
I may be wrong, but that is how I understood it.
