South Beach Diet - HUMP Day Chat - January 12
01-12-2005, 07:06 AM
Good morning, Chatty Chickies! The coffee is made and the woodstove is crackling away so pull up a chair and sit and chat a bit. :cofdate:
The dentist trip went well yesterday. Driving was fine which is good as we expect freezing rain today! :( I did a huge shop for groceries at the Superstore in town - lots of lovely veggies and whole grain stuff. The problem is lugging it all in from the car and putting it away, of course. Harry waited until I'd done all that and was ready to relax before telling me we were out of wood. Today I need to really fill up that woodbox as the crappy weather will make outside work the pits! I'll do that job and also get gas for the car as soon as it gets bright here.
Excuse me but I need to cook some Red River cereal for breakfast. I hope I still like it. If not, The Girls will eat anything!
What's happening at your house this morning? :coffee:
01-12-2005, 07:40 AM
Quick drive by, girls will be here any minute. Wanted to get bills paid before they hit the door. Gym sometime today. Hope this morning. Have to see if dd is going today or not. Will cruise by later.
01-12-2005, 07:45 AM
Good Morning ladies!
Ruth, it sure sounds like whatever weather I have gets sent your way. We have been getting freezing rain since yesterday afternoon and expect more and some more snow on top before the day is over. I am sitting here wondering if they are going to cancel school, but I bet they won't. They have 25 minutes to decide.
-IF- we have school today, I actually get to go back. I am missing my kids and hate being stuck at home when I know I have a TON of work to do there. Yesterday would have been the day in my schedule where I only have one class and have time to shelve and mend books and do other clerical things in the library as well as updating the lab, etc. I had to stay home with this stupid eye thing though. Maybe I will hope for a snow day and go in anyway and get some work done! Oh well, I guess I will get caught up someday!
Things are going pretty well as far as SBD is concerned. DH and DB were just commenting that this is pretty easy (still on Phase I) since we don't have any non-program foods in the house. I know that all three of us have at least lost 10 pounds. I laughed because DH cooked last night and he made "green bean broccoli suprise"... :) we didn't have enough frozen of each so he combined them and added some cheese, hehe. Sometimes he is so cute. ;)
He also made "sorta chicken cordon bleu" by grilling chicken breasts and then adding a slice of turkey bacon, some very thin ham slices and swiss cheese to the top and melting it. It was an awesome dinner, and yes, I am spoiled!
Well, I hope everyone has a fabulous day! Everyone that has cold and icky weather think warm sunny thoughts! Take care!

Good morning, Chicks~~ :coffee:
So glad we're at the midpoint of the workweek. I'm just not motivated. I think the holidays made me lazy. All I want to do is play. :o Ruth, that woodstove sounds awfully inviting. ~~sigh~~ I'll bring my knitting.
Last night I had a harrowing experience...actually I had three. All within about 4 minutes. I was driving to my knitting group and was on a 6 lane divided road...a very BUSY full of traffic road. The first thing that happened was that a dark skinned man, dressed in dark clothing decided to dash from the center median right in front of me to cross the street! :yikes: If it hadn't been for the glare of the oncoming headlights silhouetting him, he'd have been road pizza.
Then, not 2 minutes later, a car veered from the far right lane, cut me off to get into the left turn lane. My heartrate hadn't returned to normal yet when I was making my turn into the restaurant parking lot and a minivan came zooming out of nowhere without their headlights. OMG!! If I'd wanted to drive demolition derby, I'd move to freakin' Talladega!! What is with these maroons!?!?!?!
So, instead of my beloved mushroom soup, I opted for a glass of wine. I'd have had a Kamikaze in honor of my fellow motorists on "UN"Pleasant Hill Road, but the restaurant doesn't have a liquor license.
Still holding steady on the weight. I'm hoping the Whoosh Fairy will come visit soon. Hopefully before the end of the month.
Well, you chicks have a great day on the Beach!
01-12-2005, 08:29 AM
Good Morning Chickadees! Well it looks like our 70 degree temps are coming to a screeching halt by Sat. Just what I need lungs full of cold air! We have to go to a meeting on Sat. about our DD goin to play soccer in Australia over the summer as a sports ambassador or something to that effect. Her and DD know all the details I'm just the one who will take her. Man I have the best job! teehee! I think my MIL said if DD got to go she was going as well. We'll see!
Ruth... Be careful out there. Y'all should move south for the winter! lol My Mom told me a few weeks ago that she saw some Canadian Chickadees outside her window. I told her it was those beach chickadees flyin south for the winter.
Mamacita....OMG Well maybe all the Atlanta crazy peeps were on your road lastnight! lol Glad you made it safe and well probably not so sound though huhh! lol
Nally... Maybe you'll get caught up today if there is no school!
Chipper.. Hope you have a good workout!
Me... I have a million things to do I am so far behind on everything. I just hope I feel like getting going today! I woke up at 3 this burning up and never really got back to sleep. My room does not get hot so I know it was me. Besides I have the heat off due to our heat wave. Well I'm sure several chicks have pecked in by now. So Good morning to you all and have a great day!
01-12-2005, 08:39 AM
K, back for guideness. Then off to the gym. We are going to TGIF on Sat. for lunch. I have looked on line. I am getting in the atkins menu, grilled chicken w/ broccoli and the low carb cheese cake. The main dish, I will ask for a box when I order to cut the order in half and I can have that half for dinner. I just thought of something. I will have to ask what the crust is made of for the cheesecake. I will be starting ph2 on Sat. DH just told me I could scrape off the crust of the cheesecake. He can't beleive I am doing so well on SB. I am down another 2 lbs. But, official weigh in is Sat. I have to take my book back to the libarary tomorrow. But, in ph 2 I add a good carb and fruit once a day, correct? Then slowly add more each week?
Well, off to get shoes on and head to the gym. DH is watching the littles ones.
01-12-2005, 08:59 AM
I just started low-carb on Monday and decided to follow South Beach on Thursday. I was wondering if I could join your group. I don't know how long I will last with South Beach, as I feel like I am starving to death. I'm committed to two weeks anyway to give it a decent chance. I've dropped 6 lbs since 1/3 and have lost 3 inches from my waist. How long have you been following this plan? Thanks in advance for your insight.
01-12-2005, 09:11 AM
There is no reason to feel you are starving on this plan. Remember it is not a low carb plan after the first two weeks. Even on Phase I, you can have carbs like those found in legumes. HAve you checked out the Phase I food list in the FAQ Section? It is the revised list and includes many things not in the book - like milk and yogurt.
Could you post what you are eating so the chicks can give it a boo and make suggestions?
As to rate of loss, it varies. This plan is a lifestyle change and 2 pounds a week is good after the initial phase.
01-12-2005, 09:19 AM
Welcome to the beach Gypsymama! We hope you stick around!
01-12-2005, 09:31 AM
Good morning everyone, sorry to have been missing in action but life has just gotten busy and also like someone else said I have gotten a little lazy over the holidays. Well it is a balmy 73 degrees here in Bermuda. I am sorry to rub it in, but sometimes I still can't believe I am actually here. Life is good.. A girlfriend and I started phase 1 again on Monday, I am actually following the recipes which I have never done in the past. Whew... It is a lot of work but the food is really good... Not much else going on on must go see some sick people... Have a good day everyone.
01-12-2005, 10:26 AM
73F!!!!!!! Grrrrrr! We are in the middle of freezing rain! It just started a few minutes ago. The 401 (our Ontario Interstate) is closed, so they say.
A nice thing happened when I went for gas and the paper: Kevin was there and followed me home and filled the wood bin to the very top for me! Schools are closed so he has kids home and has definitely decided not to work today. He was to do roofing! What a sweetie! Now don't get any ideas, Chickies! He's about 46, has a major beer gut, plumbers cleavage and only a couple of teeth which are broken! He's not on my Third Husband List!
So, we're housebound for the day. I think I'll tackle laundry and maybe do a major sort and pitch in my pantry closet.
We now return to regular programming.
01-12-2005, 10:33 AM
*** RNMom ***
It took me 18 months to lose the 86 pounds. I actually lost 95 pounds in the 18 months, but I've put 10 pounds on in the last three years. I lost my first 50 in exactly one year, and I lost 45 pounds in the 6 months. I've been maintaining for the most part, but like I said, I've let some creep back on. I was (and still am) doing weight watchers. But with my wedding coming up, I want to get down to my goal weight, so I decided to kick start my weight loss with SBD.
Ruth - we're having freezing rain in Boston too. UGH! Legumes are only for Phase II? Whoops! I've been eating beans. Should I be waiting for Phase II?
Chipper - have a great workout!
Nally - that's awesome y'all are doing well. 10 pounds? Wow... is that in one week?
mamcita - ooh, drive carefully. I'm glad you got home safe. Some people on the road are just crazy!
Bamie - I'm so jealous of your heat wave. I miss the South and the mild winters so bad!!
Gypsymama - WELCOME. I'm only on week one, but I lost over 6 pounds. I'm not hungry at all, but for the first week I was craving crabs BIG TIME. But yesterday, there were donuts in the cube yesterday and I didn't even want one.
Bostonchick - Bermuda? You live in Bermuda? I'm SOOO jealous. Hey, I'm in Boston. Are you from there origianlly? I lived in Allston for 6 years, and I just move to Newton this summer.
01-12-2005, 10:39 AM
Good morning Ladies!
Not much going on here today. Was hoping school would be cancelled so I wouldn't have to get out on the ice to take ds to school. UGH! Again, every other school around us is cancelled and we are going. We made it without a problem. Today we're expecting freezing rain, then rain, then snow. Talk about some weird weather!!
Ruth~You sound like you have a super busy day. I remember having to carry in wood, etc.. I hated it! LOL
Chipper~Hope you have a great day! Bills paid already? I need to do that as well, I suppose later will do just fine.
Nally~I LOVE Chicken Cordon Bleu! DH makes a great one!! That sounds kinda good, I"ll have to get the stuff out and maybe talk dh into cooking this weekend. GL on your first day back to school if you get to go. Glad your eye is feeling better. Great job on the weight loss!
Mamacita~I had the same experience yesterday afternoon with the same guy!! TWICE! HE ran through 2 intersections and almost hit me. I was freaking out! Kamakazi...sounds great to me! HAHA
Bamiegirl~That's great about your dd. An experience like that would be awesome!
Gypsymama~ WELCOME!! Glad you joined us here! There's no need to go hungry. You have lots of options. Be sure to ask any question you might have and check out all the great information on the FAQ board. It has answered a TON of my questions and the updated food list is great! I have the book and there's several things not listed that are on the updated list. WTG on the 6# weight loss and the 3inch loss! That's fantastic!
Bostonchick~I wish I was in sunny Bermuda with 73 degrees...
As for me...I will be on the treadmill again tonight as well as some sit-ups. I am so out of shape it's not even funny. Day 3..here we go!
~*~ Have a FANTASTIC day ladies ~*~
01-12-2005, 10:48 AM
Yeah! I'm down 4 pounds! Woo Hoo. It must be the cutting back on portions. I posted later last night that I was having issues with portion creeping and last couple of days I cut way back on portion sizes. My body fat % has also gone down. Now I feel guilty for not exercising lately!
Ruth - You sly fox!
Mama- EEEKS! sounds like a Michigan drivers!
Naly - YUM! That Chicken Cordon Bleu sounds yummy!
Chipper - A lot of times low carb cheesecake crusts are made of nuts! I use pecans or almonds for mine. I don't make it that often though because I eat too much even though it is OP!
Gypsy - welcome! Good luck! This is a great group.
Bami - did you read my late post last night. :smug: I had a DATE! :cb:
Everyone else! Hi and have an OP day!
01-12-2005, 10:53 AM
Sorry, Tilley. I didn't phrase that properly. Legumes are allowed on Phase I. I'll go back and edit my post.
01-12-2005, 11:02 AM
yes I moved from Boston to Bermuda at the end of March. I love it and I haven't missed the boston winters yet. I was home for Christmas and it was 9 degrees and we got 11 inches of snow that did it for me for awhile. I grew up on Cape cod and then spent the last 10 years in Boston the last 8 I was in Brighton on the Newton line. Wow we were neighbors. Excellent job on the weight loss... I have had many stops and starts and do keep going down but just very slowly....It is great to have this support network here to keep us all motivated and OP. Have a great day....
01-12-2005, 11:05 AM
29 degrees and snowing here. We're heading into some cold weather - tomorrow's high is -2, Friday's is -3. Brrrr! I'll be INSIDE, thank you very much.
It was a week ago today that I printed out the SB Phase I food list and headed to the grocery store. I rolled out of bed this morning with one thing on my mind - Weigh-in time! I'm happy to report I'm down slightly over 4 pounds. I can't hardly believe it!
This morning I'm off to do errands. First off is coffee from the local roaster, then on to drop off books at the library. Then I head to the offices of a local magazine to meet with the editor and hopefully convince her to throw a few assignments my way. On to the fish house (trout for dinner!) and the food co-op for tahini and other health-conscious food. Finally, the grocery store. I've been tracking how much this diet is costing us, and it ain't cheap! $250 in the first week. I'm hoping that part of that is "start-up costs", as I don't think I can reasonably afford $1000/month for two people on this diet. Tell me it ain't so!
Currently I'm trying to throw some food down my throat and wake up, all the while chasing around the newest member of the household - an eight week old pug puppy named Frodo. Currently he's more than happy to sleep in my arms or on my foot, but I need my arms and feet. When I try to put him down on the couch for a nap he stands and barks at me. Babies!
01-12-2005, 11:09 AM
Anchor... I did read that! That old Alabama song went through my mind! "There's an old flame burnin in your eyes!" teehee!
You go gurl! So when is the next one? How exactly did y'all "bump" into each other again? I hope it's a hot steamy romance that you share so we can live our dull life through you! haha ROTFLMBO!
01-12-2005, 11:15 AM
Good morning everyone!!
Wow we're on a roll this morning in here....I have to say I'm jealous that it's cold where ya'll are and ya'll have snow......I want that.....Call me a weirdo if ya want but when it's supposed to be winter...I want winter weather...I mean it's gonna be in the mid 70's here today in VA! I can't believe it! Nothing new is really going on here for me...my blue jeans are very loose...which means I get to go try on some 12's....I bought a pair of 12 pants for work and they fit great....I was at my Grandma's yesterday and well she was like...You know you can't shop at Lane Bryant anymore....and it just hit me...I was like "Oh my gosh! you're right!" I have to say that's a weird feeling....a very weird feeling...I haven't been this small since I was in...maybe middle school if that...so this is really strange for me...i've noticed that the transition from being heavy...like I used to be and to where I am now...it's just really wild....I am so glad that I have found a diet that really works....and I am so blessed that I have you guys here supporting me along the way....everyone is doing such a fantastic job on the beach! Let's keep it up!!
01-12-2005, 11:22 AM
Why aren't we busy bees today ladies!!! Page 2 already!
Coworker bought me a "taco" salad for lunch yesterday. I drank lots (to me) of water and for dinner had one small bowl of pasta -- but I also had some garlic bread sitting in the freezer for 3 months. I made it and ate it all.
Bad for SB, good for my stomach. But I can not wait to eat SB friendly again. It's weird to say that, but it's true. I mean, I got on the scale this morning and am +3 now.
I am craving salads and beans and veggies and and and!!!
Especially when you all are soooo motivating. January 22nd can't come fast enough!
Hope all else is well.
01-12-2005, 11:50 AM
January 22nd? Is that a special day for you? it's coming up soon!! :)
01-12-2005, 12:01 PM
I have decided that phase 1.5 is what I am doing. Did great last week but this week has been more of a struggle. Had a couple of cookies yesterday :(
Today is a new day though and I am on plan and am going to stay that way. Washed lettuce and celery last night and have a left over chicken breast for lunch.
What should I have for dinner?
01-12-2005, 12:15 PM
Did all ya'll (Bami  ) notice that I'm teetering at 200? I'm on the fence. I weighed myself 3 times to see that needle pop down to 199 but it didn't move. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bami - I feel like a great big dork! I don't know how to date anymore - I haven't been single for 17 years. Mucho history with this guy. I was his first girlfriend he asked me to marry him twice - the second time was two days before my first wedding - to someone else. How romantic is that?!? So I was surprised to hear from him. Then my good buddy said he canceled his engagement to someone else right before Christmas. So this could get very interesting. For the record I did encourage him to re-think his engagement. So I may or may not see him this weekend. I'll keep ya posted.
01-12-2005, 12:15 PM
Sheesh, you guys are busy this morning.
Well, I had a nice very long reply to everyone this morning and then my finger spazzed out or something and I lost it :blah:
I finally woke up feeling like I might survive. This detox stuff is hard for me. I've had a constant headache since Monday, yesterday was the worst. I knew that it would go away if I could just eat a dozen Krispie kreme donuts..... :fr: Anyway, glad the worst if over. I've had about 5 days off from work and I'm glad. I needed that time to get SB strong.
Everyone sounds like they are doing well, and glad everyone is safe. Be careful out there, weird weather we're having.
I was going through some pictures last night and decided I would post some before and after's. I didn't realize how different I looked (I see me everyday) until I saw these. Kind of impressive. Anyway, if I can figure out how to do that I will.
01-12-2005, 12:19 PM
I'm cheering for you....................onederland! :cp: It's gonna happen. I used to date this wrestler in high school and he would spit do get his weight down.....ewwww
01-12-2005, 12:32 PM
Anchor... Stay in it Girl you're almost there! Yipeeeeeee! Oh I can't wait to hear what happens with you 2. Nothing like a second chance! Y'all should have been on that show on TLC! teehee! Keep us posted!
01-12-2005, 12:39 PM
It's been really busy at work today. That's what I get for taking the day off. Also my team lead is sick today so I have to handle some of his responsibilities.
Yesterday was wonderful. I am a bit sore after taking the Intro to Pilates class but not too much. It feels good to know I used those muscles. Today will just be regular cardio and the weight machines but I am thinking tomorrow I might just be able to squeeze in a half hour Pilates class and still have time to fix dinner and get to the Cub Scout roundtable meeting on time.
I got to edit my signature today with my weekly weigh-in. It feels good to officially be below 150 (even after two slices of sugarfree strawberry pie for my birthday). I am back to losing again and I WILL make goal this month!
RNMOM - I know what you mean. I don't realize how different I look until I see an old picture. Plus my clothes are really hanging on me today... I may have to go shopping again and I just hate to spend the money.
We were in the 70's yesterday but we're getting a cold front tonight. We'll be back in the 30's. Y'all are welcome to come down to Dallas. Our idea of cold would probably seem like Spring to many of you.
01-12-2005, 01:34 PM
Hi gals, DP said I don't feel like a diet. I told him it's not and Im seriously considering after next week banish the word "diet" and "forever" from vocabulary.. Im down 4lbs from Monday and thinking Im not doing too bad w/ SB... :goodscale
A friend who is doing the beach with me used to work w/ my coworker and she warned me that my coworker is a SABOTAGER... we bet by the end of the week she would either bring me lunch or goodies or something... Well lo and behold she called me in her office to ask if I can come to a dinner party on Saturday. Guess what's she's having... SPAGHETTI PIE. she said I know your on diet and can't have it but it's the only thing I can make since Im getting my hair done that day before the Dinner.. :?: it's only Wednesday so who knows what the rest of the week will bring <LOL>> I don't know if we will go or maybe go late after dinner to just hang out... :smug:
01-12-2005, 01:39 PM
Oh, man! It is GREAT to see so many posting in the daily but there is no way I can keep up with posting to everyone and still keep my job! I am supposed to be working!
Anchor, I am THRILLED for you, girl!!! ONEderland, here you come! :cheer: I cannot wait to get there! (RN, you are killing me with the spitting thing.... :lol3: )
Abadoozy, I spend about $120 in groceries each week, and used to spend about $80 or $90. I did spend more in the beginning, when I was stocking up on Splenda, syrups, Smart Balance, breads, flaxseed, etc. Now it's much cheaper. I also make a vegetarian meal at least once a week to cut down on meat costs. We buy a lot at Sam's Club to save, too. Congrats on the loss! :cp: The puppy sounds darling!
Ruth, I'm not believing it...I think the lady doth protest too much. :D Who cares if his teeth are broken...at least he has some! ;) Ladies, Ruth is an outrageous flirt. :flame: I want to take lessons...if I could get some of the men on my street to do my chores, I would have more time to engage in enlightening experiences... :chin: Glad that you have good friends, Ruth, but not surprised. You are a wonderful lady! :grouphug: So, tell us who IS on the third husband list?
thobbs, have you done two weeks of Phase 1 yet? If not, start anew today and do this! Find more exciting things to eat (how about making a taco bake for dinner and having that for lunch tomorrow...yummmm! :T ) and do this! :D
Jenn, I'm glad you found something to eat yesterday. No worries...when 1/22 comes, you can hop back on the wagon. We'll save you a comfy spot! :D
Mama, I'm so glad you're okay!!! :^: What a terrible experience! Two dark-skinned people wearing dark clothes were standing to the left of a car that was in the lane last night when I approached. The headlights of an approaching car backlit them at the last second and I had to swerve to avoid hitting them. They just laughed! Urgh...get out of the road, people!
Me: Well, the ole weight is bouncing around-222 today. DH came home last night late and I stayed up to welcome him...then I ended up doing a lot of welcoming :o (does that count as exercise?) so I was too exhausted to go to the gym this morning. I have Jazzercise tomorrow though and then back to the gym on Friday. :jig:
Had a steak, great grains, and broccoli with cheese sauce for dinner last night. Tonight is a minestrone soup with lots of veggies and more greens. I'm really loving that turnips and greens recipe. I had some more last night when I got home from class. They really hit the spot! I'll have to lug the huge cookbook in to work and type it in for you guys.
Have a great day!
01-12-2005, 01:50 PM
I used to date this wrestler in high school and he would spit do get his weight down.....ewwww
 I'm laughing so hard I'm snorking! :lol3:
01-12-2005, 02:01 PM
So, tell us who IS on the third husband list?
Okay, Laurie, I'll confess. I'm on my third husband. I have two other friends who are also on their third husbands so at least I am not alone.
01-12-2005, 02:06 PM
Oh no you are not alone! I'm on lucky number 3 myself! teehee
01-12-2005, 03:19 PM
Thanks for the welcome and insight. I'll check out the list for phase 1 posted here. As far as what I have been eating...lots of salad, peppers, cukes, celery, mozzarella cheese, and baked chicken. Thanks again for your help.
01-12-2005, 03:26 PM
Okay, Laurie, I'll confess. I'm on my third husband. I have two other friends who are also on their third husbands so at least I am not alone.
Third husband! Oh my! How do you train them so fast?!? :D
01-12-2005, 03:27 PM
I'm finally checking in for the day....but it's gonna be a short post. I'm buried in work right now.
I made it through the mixer last night really well. Seeing as it was a new caterer, I had to try a small bite of 2 things that weren't OP. I have to be able to recommend a caterer to my brides and grooms that's going to serve good food so that means I get to try it. It was only a piece of pasta and a small scalloped potato. Otherwise, I had tri-tip, a salad and green beans. The green beans may have had butter on them but I didn't eat enough to really matter. It was fun as it was also a casino night. I played a lot of Blackjack and did fairly well.
Not really much happening today other than a pile of work! :p
Congrats to everyone who reported weight loss!!! WTG Barb (under that 150 mark!).
Don't forget to watch Dude Room on the Discovery Channel today if you get it! :D
Have a great day! :)
01-12-2005, 04:23 PM
Anchor - doing the happy dance. Goodbye 200 and never look back. I remember reaching 199.... and I swore I'd never see 200 again!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!
01-12-2005, 04:39 PM
January 22nd? Is that a special day for you? it's coming up soon!! :)
 Yes Tilley -- it's a payday when I will have money left over to go back on SB!!! :)
01-12-2005, 08:38 PM
Hey chicks I am flying in and out I just got home from thr funeral I have not even had a time to read the posts. I have to run back to town to pick up dd and dh. I will be back and update myself in a few minutes. I stayed OP today even though they had yummy egg salad on white bread little triangle sandwhichs my fav, sorry got to run.
