Reasons to do legs. Part 3. (Thanks, Ian Dury.)
I’m reading all kinds of motivational books at the moment. I learn something from each one. Here’s a gem from Multi-sport Training Programmes for Fitness by Fiona Hayes (A & C Black, London, 2004).
‘The National Fitness Survey (1992) reported very poor leg power in the United Kingdom, reflecting the trend in much of the Western world. Without enough strength in the legs and trunk to enable you to bend down and lift correctly (with a straight back and bent knees) you risk damaging your back every time you pick up so much as a pencil or piece of paper from the floor. Position statements from the US Surgeon General’s office, based on worldwide research, upholds strength training as the key factor in maintaining functional ability, health and independence as we age.’
Another compelling reason to get to the gymn.
(This book and others are helping me to reframe myself as an athlete …)
