Hey All........I got the following letter today from Larry (Dee's hubby)............
As all of you probably know, Darlene went for Back Surgery on Monday December 6th. The operation went well and they planned on sending her home the same day. We told them that she needed someone to take care of her at home (home care) and explained that I couldnít take too much time off work and her mom was too sick to take care of her. We insisted that they keep her in the hospital because of the difficulties she had moving around when she had her previous surgery. The agreed and they are going to keep her in the hospital until they find us someone to help during the day.
I went to see Darlene last night (07-Dec-04) and she is still having a lot of pain. The physio department at the General Hospital tried to get her to walk a few times, but it was too difficult for her move around.
They are talking about sending her to Seven Oaks Hospital because they have a better rehab program there for people with neurological problems.
Now this is a shocker! The doctor came in to see Darlene last night, he started explaining how he went back to checked his notes and the x-rays from her previous surgery. What he found is that when they use a reference point to locate your first vertebrae, they count upward to find the damaged disc. Well, their reference point was 1 cm off or 1 disc off and they operated in the wrong place! That is why he didn't see the need to remove her disc the first time and why she still had back problems. He tried to describe that Darlene's discs are different in that they are closer together and more difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the problem. I feel real bad for her because she didnít really have to go through the pain of an operation twice and even all the problems she was having since they first operated.
The doctor was very sincere and he apologized several times. I guess it took a lot for a top level surgeon to stand in front of us and admit that he made a mistake. He told us that this is a very rare occurrence that may happen once every 5 years.
I don't think that it sunk in last night for either of us, but he did assure us that he found the problem and that the disc had to be removed. He is expecting a full recovery with no nerve damage.
Anyways, I'll let you go and keep you all posted on her recovery.
Thanks for all your prayers, calls and emails. It means a lot to Darlene.

Too bad Larry and Dee couldn't have came to the States to seek treatment. The poor dear, you know she had to be hurting like crazy and she thought she was the crazy one because she wasn't getting better!
Shelley, I'm still just on the cards...I want to finish those by the weekend, then I have all of next week to get the others done. I thought to myself, how difficult will it be to paint 40 cards? I'll have them done in just a few days! YEAH, RIGHT!
I'm going to place them in a cello bag along with a few pieces of candy, not much, but the clients will know someone is thinking of them.
12-08-2004, 08:01 PM
Larry sent me the letter too. I am so sorry that they are going through this. I think they should sue also.
A horrible thing happened today. Mike gave me $40.00 this morning to get some food with because my parents were coming over tonight and he thought we may want to go to Subway to pickup something. He said if we didn't, just give the girls each $20.00. We have the girl next door coming over every day to take the dog out. I only pay here $5.00 per week, but it really only takes a minute to do, and she didn't want money in the first place. Well, I left the 2 20's on the top of the stereo cabinet this morning. When my parents left, I went to get the money and it was gone. I never in a million years even thought that I couldn't leave anything out when this girl is around. The girls and I went over and told her mom, and her mom said that she knows that Nicole will deny it. This is the same girl that Patty got in trouble with about using the Internet last year. I feel horrible about it, and now I wonder if she has taken anything else in the house. Her mom has suspected Nicole of taking money from her also, but has thought that maybe she has misplaced it from time to time. BTW, Nicole just happened to give Patty $20.00 tonight as a Hanukkah gift to get her nails done. I don't think we'll be using her to do the dog anymore. I hate not being able to trust people. The sad thing is that her mom is so strict with her that she will probably be grounded forever.
12-09-2004, 11:52 AM
Shelley, if she did steal the $40, then she needs to have her butt grounded "forever." Wasn't it nice of her to give $20 of it back to your daughter.
I wish that Dee's doctor would've gotten her surgery right the 1st time. What a lot of wasted time and energy an unnecessary pain.
Gayle--thanks for my Christmas card and my wedding card--1st I've gotten! :)
Hope you all are doing well--so far I've stuck to my way of eating every day since I've been back home. Using marriage as motivation seems to be working for me. I was losing consistantly, but I haven't lost any for the last three days--guess I've gotten rid of all the water :)

Hey guys, this is Dez. My dad is too busy to post anything with going back and forth from the hospital and all...daily :( .. Dez, How is Dee today?
I had an acquaintance call me yesterday to see if I am interested in being interviewed for a bookkeeping job at a PI attorney's office that she had decided to leave. I am so chicken. I guess I just don't think highly enough of myself to think that I could do it. I told her that I really wasn't interested in leaving the school when you get right down to it. I hope I'm not sorry that I didn't check it out. I have such mixed feelings when it comes to working at the school. One day I love it and the next I'm screaming to myself wanting to quit working for this slave driver of a principal. I doubt it's any better anywhere else, plus you don't have the added benefit of seeing kids grow up before your eyes. From what I understand, the pay is quite well at the attorney's office, but I have to mainly think about the benefits that I have through the school since Mike is under pain management and it would be quite expensive to take on ourselves.
Gayle-Thank you for the beautiful card.
12-10-2004, 07:04 PM
Shelley, your welcome! If you have mixed feelings about changing jobs, then that is probably a good sign to stay where your at. Although.....what would it hurt to check into it more? I KNOW if you interviewed, you would be offered a position. You are so much more valuable then you realize.
12-11-2004, 08:28 PM
Hi, this is Larry. Darlene is still in the hospital, she could be in there for another couple of weeks. She has some nerve damage in her left leg that isn't permanent. She can barely walk to the bathroom because one leg doesn't seem to work properly, it's like she's dragging it on the ground.
The physiotherapy program in the hospital is first rate, the food is fabulous and the nurses are very caring. She is well taken care of.
I am going to see her now at the hospital and I'll keep you all posted on her recovery.
Thanks for all your support.
12-11-2004, 09:39 PM
Thank you for the update on Dee. Two more weeks???!!!! Oh my gosh! Please tell her that I love her & I'm praying for her.Also...Larry, you need to try to take care of yourself too. I know how tiring it can get by working and going to the hospital to be with her. I wish I lived close so I could help. Take care!
Maybe you should atleast go for that job interview. You'll never know until you go. I don't want you to wish several weeks or months down the road that maybe you should have tried. Good luck! :crossed:
We just got home from riding around for 2 hours looking at Christmas lights. Wayne thought maybe it would help put me in the Christmas mood. It did help some.
I'm going to START my shopping next weekend. Yep...I haven't even started!
Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
12-12-2004, 01:29 AM
Larry, so glad you posted! I agree with Sher, you need to take care of yourself too. This will be a stressful time for everyone, hopefully Darlene will be back home by Christmas. Give the little Canadian a big hug from me!!!
Sher, I am still shopping too...in fact, I have yet to wrap a gift and get it under the tree. Just not in the mood this year for the holidays.
We are going to a wine tasting tomorrow evening hosted by Steves part time job boss. Then we will be attending a dinner theatre as the company Christmas party, we heard it is really good. I will fill you all in later on how it went.
12-12-2004, 06:10 AM
Larry and Dez-Please give Dee my love and prayers. I hope she recovers soon.
Sherry-Every year the house at the back of our subdivision puts on a beautiful Christmas display. This year, there is a sign saying that the hurricane distroyed so many of their displays that they are unable to have it this year. In the years past, we used to get so many people coming by to see it. How sad is that?
I have a party today at the principal's house in Bonita Springs. My friend and I are going to the Naples mall first, then going to the party, then more shopping at Steinmart afterwards. I told Mike and the girls to do everything without me today, because this is my day!
I have been doing very well on WW online. I have only lost 2 lbs and everyday I weigh, I am down more. However, today is my official weighin day and I'm the same, so I changed the weigh in back to Mondays. I'll see what happens, because I was so bloated from eating turkey soup last night late, and I weighed at 4:AM this morning. I have to log it on Mondays anyway. I think last week I actually used my official day as Monday without changing it online. I am also getting my period every 2 weeks. I hate going through the change and getting old!
12-13-2004, 10:31 AM
I hope that you all had a week-end as wonderful as mine :)
Stewart came down to spend it with me. We went flea-marketing all day Saturday. He bought me a ton of Wexford cut glass. I want to use it everyday, but he has visions of a china cabinet and special occasions. I think that's very romantic of him :)
I didn't eat too terribly while he was here. He grilled for me on Saturday, and I ate grilled chicken sandwiches for both lunch and dinner yesterday. I work out with Steve tonight, so I'll find out how badly I did.
Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say hi.
Gayle--Stewart liked the card you sent to us. He said "Thanks."
Shelley--If you don't want to change jobs, then don't. But, it never hurts to check out an opportunity. Don't burn any bridges :D
Dee--hope you're feeling better SOON!!!! We miss you!
Hey to everyone else! I'm thinking of you all!
12-13-2004, 10:12 PM
Part of a letter I received from Larry today:
Darlene is still in the hospital, she is in a special ward called PANSU (Post Acute Neuro Surgery Unit). They are very thorough and she is in very good hands.
Her appetite is still low and she has an appointment with the dietician this morning to determine what she can eat. For lunch today I am bringing her some good Ukrainian food from Christmas at my dadís this past weekend. Hopefully this will spark her appetite a bit.
She has a very busy schedule while at the hospital which includes working with a physiotherapist, Social worker, Massage Therapist and cooking classes (not that she needs help there) the cooking classes are part of teaching her how to function in the kitchen without hurting yourself. They are trying to simulate what she would be doing if she was at home. Once she passes all her tests, then she should be ready to get back home with minimal help.
I talked to her this morning and she had a good night sleep. Her Physio this morning included walking from her bed to the nurses station (that was her goal and once she has her mind set, you canít stop her). The walk to the nurses station was probably 25 to 30 steps and it took every bit of energy she had to do it. She was quite challenged and was shaking a lot when she finished.
He finished with a note saying Dee is missing her family... hopefully, all will work out for the best and we will have our dear friend back here soon.
12-13-2004, 10:49 PM
Cheryl, sounds like Stewart is treating you like the Queen you deserve to be. Tell him to keep up the good work! I'm so happy for the two of you!
Shelley, I hope you had fun shopping? Did you buy anything??? You deserve a "Shelley" day!!!!! The turkey soup probably had alot of salt in it, don't fret. How was your weigh-in today? May I ask what your doing weighing at 4:00AM???? I'm snooz'n like a baby at that time!!!!
Dee, bless your heart! Hopefully you are on the mend and will be back here soon. PLEASE don't over do it at home, more so since it will be the holidays. I'm sure if anything needs done, Larry or one of the kids will do it. Give Larry a big hug and tell him thank you for keeping us updated, he is a wonderful husband and he loves you dearly. It is very sweet of him and Dez to take the time to think of us.
Ramona, are you feeling better? Did you get your tree's up? We have our family tree which is huge, then Liz and I did a small pink ribbon tree for Nancy, it turned out really cute. Thank you so much for the idea.
Carol, how are you today? I suffer with my ankle around the clock. I was diagnosed with Lupus Palmovasculitis (sp?) several years ago. It is always tender, but lately it's been worse again. Besides the tenderness, it feels just like someone holding a lit cigarette up to the vein.
Vickster, still around or off with MIL Christmas shopping?
Deb, how's James doing? How soon can he go back to work?
Sher, are you in the Christmas spirit yet???? Are you ready for the 28th??
How are all of my other buddies?????
The dinner theatre was ok, the food was so-so, in fact not very good at all. We would of been very upset if we purchased the tickets.
I delivered my Hospice cards today. Shortly after, I received a telephone call. The Pastoral minister/counselor happened to see the cards and wants me to make 25 support cards for him with sunsets, mountains, landscapes etc. This will actually be a paying job!!!!
Now back to my non-paying job of getting 25 ornaments painted and personalized this week!
12-14-2004, 05:56 AM
Gayle-I'm sure your cards are well worth being paid for! I still can't decide what to get my principal and AP. I have looked everwhere, and can't decide. I was going to give her a gold star of David, but I am afraid she won't wear it. Tell me, would any of you, being Christians, wear a star of David, or would you feel out of place wearing it? I have seen some with the star and a cross inside. I may just end up getting her a candle. I went to Yankee candle, but the one I really wanted added up to 50.00 before I was through. I don't want to spend over 25.00 on each of them.
I lost 1 lb. this week, which is fine with me. I would rather lose slow.
Cheryl-You sound very happy. You deserve to be treated well by your new hubby!
I know there hasn't been much posting here, but we really need to for Dee. Since Larry is printing out all the posts, let's each try to write something everyday so that she will hear from her friends everyday.
BTW, Dee! Must be nice not having an appetite!!LOL!!
12-14-2004, 11:57 AM
Dee, I've been reading the posts and keeping up with your progress. I'm so sorry you had to undergo unnecessary surgery. The doctor should have been more careful and done it right the first time. I pray that each day you will be stronger and stronger and can soon return home. I know you don't like being down. You are a go-getter and like being with people. I know that you will be back better than ever in no time at all. You are a very strong woman and your spirit and determination will pull you through this. May God bless and keep you and give you strength each day.
"I gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which I must stop and look fear in the face....I say to myself, I've lived through this, and I can take the next thing that comes along"--Eleanor Roosevelt
12-14-2004, 12:48 PM
Shelley, I'm not an expert, but I think the gift of the star of David pin should be fine as long as both recipients are Christian. People have different concepts of what the star represents, but I think most view it as a spiritual symbol. The star with the cross inside sounds beautiful. If the gift were for me, I would wear it, even though I am not of the jewish faith. It represents something differently for me, plus it represents a token of friendship from a very special person.
Dee, I hope your day is going well. Remember to take it easy and not push yourself too hard. Why with this surgery are you going through so much therapy when the last surgery for the same thing, they shoved you out of the hospital within the week? I bet you are excited Dez will be home in a few days! LOVE YOU!
Ramona, such a sweet note to Dee, you have such a way with words.
12-15-2004, 09:19 AM
Happy birthday to you........happy birthday to you...........
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR CAROL, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!
Carol, wishing you a very special and blessed day. Thank you for the past year of support and friendship.
12-15-2004, 09:48 AM
Very happy birthday Carol!!!
Stay warm, eat plenty of cake!
Love ya, girl--
12-15-2004, 01:02 PM
Hi everyone, it's Larry signing in on behalf of Dee.
After Dee read all your posts, she asked me to send you the following response:
I got your hug. Thank you. :) You keep the girls in line so well they aren't posting very much. There aren't many posts to keep me occupied. Gayle you are so thoughtful for painting all those cards and including a few goodies. Your clients will greatly appreciate it. Look how it paid off, you have business from it, you will be blessed 10 fold.
How did you enjoy the wine tasting party? Hiccup... What show was put on by the dinner theatre? Too bad it was a disappointment.
It sure is sad when we loose trust in someone. That's too bad about the girl taking that money. How is the celebration going for Hanukkah? You sure aren't eating too much if you lost 2 lbs. You are doing great! I think that you should look into that book-keeping job. It wouldn't hurt. You just never know where you might end up. Don't close the door before it is open. I am glad that you took a day for yourself. You deserve to have some time off. I am certainly not looking forward to menopause. Some people go through it with no problem. I hope that things will get better.
That's sad that the neighbors will not be able to put up their Christmas display. I personally would be uncomfortable wearing the Star of David only because of not being Jewish. I wouldn't want to mislead someone.
Thanks for trying to motivate everyone to post for me.
I am glad that you are continuing to lose weight. It is a tough season to even maintain. Marriage is a good motivator. That is sad that you didn't receive wedding cards. You are quite the bargain hunter. I love flea markets & used clothing stores too. Thanks for thinking of me.
My friend, you are so sweet. I know that you would take my pain away if you could. You have a deep passion for your friends and family. I wish that the Spirit of Christmas comes over you and cheers your soul and brings you joy. Thanks for sending your love.
Thanks for being there for me. It means a lot.
I has been tough the last week for me. Besides the pain, what hurts the most is missing out on Christmas. I love the decorations, music, fires, entertaining, family and the rush. I miss it so much, it makes me sad.
I want you to know how much it means to me to know that you are all out there cheering, praying and thinking of me. I think of you all daily.
Did you all get my cards I sent you from Las Vegas?
Larry will keep you updated on how well I am doing.
Bye for now
12-15-2004, 07:00 PM
Sshhhhhhh......Don't tell Carol but her birthday is tomorrow (16th) But I bet she'll take those b/day wishes anytime! :)
12-15-2004, 07:16 PM
Dee-I ended up getting both the principal and the assistant principal beautiful beaded bracelets. My SIL was working at a store that I happened to walk into and she sold me her bracelets at her cost. They are gorgeous, with sterling beads in between the crystal beads. She really saved me so much. I am so grateful to her. I did get your card from Vegas. It was so nice of you! I hope you get better and better everyday.
12-15-2004, 07:34 PM
Sorry I haven't posted much. I worked all day Monday then worked the game that night! It was a LONG day working 18 hours!
I STILL haven't STARTED my shopping!!! Oh well, I still have 10 days! Actually we're going all day Saturday with Debbie & James. So hopefully I'll get a lot done then.
I'm so sorry that it's been a tough week for you. Bless your heart! I know how much you'll miss the Christmas things. That breaks my heart. Is there anyway that everything could just stay the way it is and the family celebrate when you get home? I know it won't be the same but it would be pretty much be a happy time. Thank Larry for keeping us posted and here's a big hug to both of you!!!! :grouphug:
The braclets sounds beautiful! You made a great choice! :)
Where is everyone??? I hope all is well. Please post soon!
Love to all......
12-15-2004, 09:42 PM
WHOOPS!!!!!! Sorry Carol! I had the wrong day marked on the calendar! I'll be back tomorrow to send my birthday wishes to you!!!
Dee & Larry, the wine tasting was great, in fact I could of stayed there all night (giggle***) we tasted anything from a $4.00-$150.00 bottle. I must have budget taste buds because I was happiest with the $15.00-$25.00 price range. The $150.00 bottle tasted yucky to me. The owner of the store invited Steve and I back on Christmas eve after Allison is in bed, she wants us to try a few more bottles out.
The dinner theatre usually will have a play, this time it was a Christmas variety show.
Sher, good luck shopping! I have NO CLUE where I'm at on everything! It seems like it snuck up on me this year!
I hope your day is filled with all kinds of fun & goodies!!!!!!! :hat:
Love you!!!!! :hat:
12-16-2004, 08:03 AM
It's Carol's birthday!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!
Love, Gayle :D
12-16-2004, 10:32 AM
Two birthdays for Carol!
Don't worry, sweetie, only one of 'em will count this year!
for real, this time!!
12-16-2004, 12:58 PM
CAROL, I HOPE YOU HAVE AN ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS BIRTHDAY!!!!!! :gift: :cp:
12-16-2004, 06:17 PM
Happy Birthday Carol!!!
:cheer: :hb: :cheer: :hb: :cheer:
Hope you are having a wonderful Day!
12-17-2004, 02:53 PM
Carol, hope you had a happy birthday! Did you get lots of stuff???? Allison's BD is this Saturday, she will be 6 years old.
Sher & Deb, have fun shopping! I'm on the downhill slide! YIPPEEEEE!!!!! In fact, I think I will finish up shopping tonight.
We are going out for pizza tonight, it was Allison's choice since her BD is tomorrow. Then we will have the grandparents out on Sunday for cake and ice cream.
I'm busy coming up with gag gifts, my side of the family usually does a gift exchange but then we fill in with a game or a gag gift exchange. You know if a package arrives on your lap from Santa or the elves, then more then likely its a gag gift. I usually try to think of something that has happened to the person sometime throughout the year and turn it into something funny.
I hope everyone is having a good day! Wishing our little Canadian chickie the best! Hopefully she will be out of the hospital by Christmas!
12-17-2004, 06:35 PM
Went out for a late lunch/early dinner with the girls from the office. We went to Joe's Crab Shack, and I had a blackened chicken caesar salad. I only used a bit of dressing, but I ate all of it, including the garlic bread slices. I'm figuring on 13 points for the whole thing, and I added a few more points for the garlic bread. It was delish!!
12-17-2004, 10:55 PM
Well I'm planning to start my Christmas shopping tomorrow!!!! :D
Dee...How are you today? I hope you are improving more everyday!!! Love you!!
Gayle....Tell Allison I said :sman: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!! :sman: How was dinner tonight? I bet Allsion enjoyed the pizza!!
Shelley...Sounds like you had a great OP lunch!! I'm sooooooo proud of you!!!!
Debbie.....I'm looking forward to tomorrow! Hopefully I'll get a lot done!
Carol....How was your b/day??? Post soon and tell us all about it!!
Where are you Ramona.....Doni.......Vicki......Cheryl?????? I sure miss you and your posts!!!
12-17-2004, 11:25 PM
Sherry, I'll tell Allison in the morning. she just went to bed after using every sweet charm she could to try to talk us into opening BD presents early! We went to Pizza Hut, needless to say, I did not stay OP like Shelley did today.
12-18-2004, 05:24 AM
Well, thank goodness the kids and teachers are gone from school. Maybe next week I'll be able to get something done.
Sherry-Good luck shopping! I am going too! I also have a wedding to go to this afternoon. Nothing fancy, at the Holiday Inn on the river. It should be very nice. I am going to wear a long velour skirt and a red, gold and black top with a dark red silk jacket. I really don't have anything up to date and dressy to wear. The bride suggested everyone wear pant suits, but I don't have anything that I haven't already worn to school (quite a few people from school will be there.)
I haven't even gotten everyone's Christmas cards sent out yet. I don't know what's wrong with me. I just can't seem to get everything done that needs to be. My house is a mess and I won't be able to do anything to do until I get the shopping done. Sherry, I don't know how you do it! I just don't have the energy to clean. It's the last thing that I want to do!
Carol-I hope you had a nice birthday.
Ramona-You have a birthday coming up. Do you have any special plans?
Debbie-Hope you and Sherry have a good time power shopping!
Gayle-Do you have all the handpainted cards done? I just can't say it enough--you are so talented!
Dee-How are you, dear?? I love you! I haven't been running as much as I should. I really need to get my booty in gear because the 1/2 marathon is coming up in 3 weeks! I am hoping to get 10 in both today and tomorrow. I really hope that you will be up and posting on the exercise thread very, very soon!
12-18-2004, 08:46 AM
Please Go To #19...............A New Thread Has Been Started!!!! :D
