Does anyone have a recommendation on a good and cheap wheat or whole wheat pasta. My bestfriend is looking for some and refuses to pay the price for it when she can eat reg. pasta for a 1 or 2 more? :?:

I too refuse to pay for whole wheat pasta (pasta is not a big binge item for me and the ones I have seen are only 1 point less for 1 serving...if you have 2 servings at a time it works out to the same points as white pasta). However Super WalMart Prices are not that expensive for 3 different brands (I look last night).

But I can get 3 x as much for less than what it costs for 1 package of it....

Yes, I have found even the "low carb" pastas, although much higher in fiber only save about 1/2 pt per serving.

I think the whole wheat thing is a matter of necessity and a health choice to some people over price and weight. I have a friend who has a condition (the name of it escapes me at the moment) where she can only eat whole wheat breads & pastas and brown rice and she can't eat potatoes. I have another friend who is allergic to wheat gluten however and can't eat either one! She can only eat grains made from corn or rice.

Studies have shown there are many health benefits to eating a diet of whole grains rather than enriched flour products. One is the prevention of Type 2 diabetes. Also there was a recent study published about how a diet of white bread affected the waist line as opposed to a primarily whole wheat diet. The people who ate white bread over a 10yr. period (don't quote me, but I believe that was the length of time) had a wider waist line than those who ate a whole wheat diet.

So, I guess my point is, it's an option and it depends on how much of a health nut you are. I like having the choice. I grew up on whole wheat pasta before it was so popular...it used to be much harder to find. I since grew up and married an Italian who whole wheat pasta was not an option for. So, now that we are both on WW, the compromise for us is low carb pasta. He gets just a little bit more than the white pasta. I have actually found a REALLY low carb pasta that takes some getting used to that is a whole 1 point lower than regular pasta. I think it's called Bella Vista. I found it at a discount store called Big Lots and it was REALLY cheap too...about the same price as white pasta. I save it for myself! I can tolerate it...lol. Anything to save a point. :-)
