Well we were getting pretty long so I started new this morning.
Donna I sure hope you have weathered Jeanne ok. You said you lived in southeast Georgia I do believe. And that area is getting quite a bit of rain and wind. My prayers are with you.
I tryed to get a book this weekend on the adkins for diabetics but they no longer had it at my locale walmart. And I spent much of the weekend running back and forth to work. So I did not have time to run to Baton Rouge. I'm going to get the hubby to run into town with me sometime this week I hope. It just seems that there's never enough time. I always thought this would be the time of my life that things would start to slow down. Boy was I mistaken.
Pat, Rosey, Rosetta looks like everyone has been MIA this weekend. I hope everyone had a good one. Looking forward to hearing about the recent sucesses. ;)

HELLOOOOOO out there. Where is everyone. Donna if you hear me please let me know your ok over there in GA.
I was hoping to post a small challenge to everyone this morning. With the Holidays fast approching. And all the trails that come with this time of year. I feel like it's more important now that we stick to our guns and make this a sucessful hoilday season.
I would like to ask if you gals would be interested in making the commitment to losing 10 pounds before Thanksgiving. We have 2 months. I really think it can be done. and we'll have something to shoot for instead of just waiting to watch those holiday pounds stack up. :D
And who knows where we could go from there. So Let's hear it ladies. Are you in or not.

I don't know about Donna , but this is Joanne-I'm here in SE Georgia, and we came through the storm just fine :sunny: We had some gusty winds and about 2-3 " of rain. The hardest part was watching the storm track, and hearing tornado warnings broadcast about every 15 minutes :dizzy: The best news of all: The tropics are QUIET! :D Let's pray they stay that way!
Rosetta: I ordered "Strong Women, Strong Bones" and "Strong Women Stay Slim" from amazon.com. I've just started reading, and I should be able to do some of the recommended exercises. I am a little concerned-my grandmother had severe osteoporosis (diagnosed in her 70's), and I have other risk factors. But there's a whole lot more help for me out there than there was for my nana in the 60's. :D
I'm doing pretty well with my eating-watching my carbs and portions. I can't weigh myself as yet because of the status of my ankle; so I'm going to take my measurements instead (if I can ever find the tape :dizzy: ).
Hope everyone is doing well! :D

Try amazon.com for the Adkins for Diabetics book. You may be able to get a used copy for a good price :D
As for the challenge, count me in :) But I may have to go by inches rather than pounds, depending on how my ankle is doing :crossed:

Hi, Deb and Joanne. Greetings from quake city. We had a couple of quakes this morning. :yikes: Made the chandeliers swing. They always give me the creeps because you never know when the Big One is coming. Anyway, I accept your challenge, Deb, although I'm not sure how I'm going to tell how much I lost because my scale doesn't go as far as what I weigh now. But I want to lose some weight before going to the doctor on Oct. 24. Yesterday I was really bad and feel it today. I just ordered a book on diabetic weight loss from Amazon.com. Heard of it through the American Diabetes Association which I just re-joined. I'll let you know if it's any good.

deb i will acept that challenge and hope i can do it. i was having some problems with my lipitor. i am now off it and feel like a new person. i was blaming my diabetes for problems caused by the lipitor. dr, gave me different meds but i am afraid to take them.
joanne so glad you made it through jeanne. i can't imagine a hurricane.

Glad to see everyone back this morning. :coffee: And even more glad that we have all come through the high winds, rain, and even the earth shaking. Now that's one that's hard for me to grasp. I guess it's all what your used to.
I'm hoping we all do well for the big push before the holiday. I don't see any reason we can't all measure our success in our own way. The main thing is the journey. :flow2:
I'll be checking Amazon today to see if I can get a book, Thanks for the tip. Sometimes I'm a little slow.

Goood morning :coffee: I got the best night sleep I think I've had in months. It's amazing what a good nites sleep will do for you.
Sounds as if everyone is doing well and is on board with the challenge. That's great I will start with my weight tomorrow morning. I think if I weigh on the same day every week it's easier for me. :dizzy:
Pat thanks for the tip on Target, but the only one close to me is quite some drive. Target is pretty new to Louisianna, so there aren't many here yet. This is a backwards state in some ways. Look at your politics.
Rosey you are doing great. I'm sure the carb cravings wiil get much better. Keep your fingers crossed for me. :crossed: I'm a true carb addict, and down here if you cook it, it more times than not will have rice in it. I'm hoping this night shift i'm getting ready to work will help me by not being with the dh for dinner for a few weeks. I know it sound nuts, but I'm trying to be up beat. :)

Hi, all. I've been absent for a couple of days because my computer crashed. Boss was mad. :( Deb -- you got a good night's sleep. You lucky girl! It's been at least 20 years since I've awakened refreshed. I have sleep apnea and other sleep problems so I wake up multiple times a night and have to get up several times. Never feel rested, even on the weekends when I can sleep in. I have a C-Pap machine but that doesn't help because I still wake up and then the mask annoys me. Sigh. Sorry, got off on a tangent. I hope your night work keeps you OP.
Pat -- re Lipitor -- I'm sorry you had that reaction (I read that that could happen), but I'm glad you have another option. I can't tolerate metformin and have to take Glucophage, which is more expensive.
Rosey - Ah, snow. Wow, it's early up there. Do you get snowed in all winter? congratulations on starting a diet plan. You'll get used to not eating all those carbs.
I just got my diabetic diet book. I'll give you a review next week. I'm a bit leery of Atkins, but I look forward to hearing your results. Have a nice weekend.

Hi Pat, Rosie, Rosetta, Deb and anyone else I may have missed
Sorry I've been MIA. I'm so glad our little group is still here. I don't live in GA but in NY, but thanks for the prayers and well wishes. You are all so kind. I'm sure God knew where to redirect your prayers.
Well, I had a relapse with the back and shoulder last weekend and then wed at work I got a bug that was going around, stomach and severe dizziness( might have been from going back on carbs after induction) No spikes in my blood sugar, but it has been running very very high in the morning(250's  ) I left a msg for my doc. I'll go get blood work done next week. The whole deal. I need to increase my meds. 11 days of atkins induction did absolutely nothing. Now I went back to eating carbs and the numbers actually went down a little. But they are way out of control. I need to get back to a doctors supervision. I've really been lacking in that.
I also had severe muscle pain and weakness with Lipitor. My doctor switched me to Niaspan(which you have to take with aspirin because it cause severe flashing and itching) but it caused a rash on my stomach. That happened last yr and after 3 biopsies the dermotologist said I had to start eliminating meds and adding them back on at a time. I didn't add the Niaspan back till the spring and the rash came right back. So that's something else we will have to discuss as I'm sure my cholesterol is still high.
So, since I am off to a new start, I'd like to take part in the challenge for Thanksgiving. I don't know what program I'll be on. Atkins didn't seem right but I will discuss it with the doc. All I know is I'm really tired of spending a lot of money on books and not getting anywhere(of course it's not the book, it's me) but I'm still spending way too much.
Rosetta, you mention you can't tolerate metformin and that you take glucophage. I'm on metformin and it seems at a point it no longer has an effect and when I go off or miss a dose my numbers go down. What are the issues or symptons you have with it? The more info I have when I go the doc the better. Sometimes they just want to prescribe and not discuss prevention or even a plan to control. I get really disgusted, like now and then I don't go for months.
Well, sorry I went on for so long ladies. I guess I'm making up for lost time.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Donna so glad your back. I'm still going to keep you in my prayers, sure sounds as if you need them. When you get to the Doc. make him listen. If he won't, get another doc. Sometimes they make me soooo mad.
Well I also got my book this weekend. And hope the Atkins will be much nicer to me. I'm reading and forming the plan of attack. Let's hope this works, I get so discouraged every time I have another failure. :( But at least I know I've got all of you here in my corner this time. :^:
Wishing all a great week. ;)

Hi, Donna - glad you're back. The Glucophage wasn't enough for me so I now supplement it with Glucotrol and Actos. It sounds like your doctor is an internist. I let mine handle my diabetes treatment, but when I developed gastroparesis (a diabetes complication), I requested a referral to an endocrinologist, so now I see both. An endocrinologist is a specialist in diabetes and is more qualified to tweak the drugs. If your insurance requires referrals request that your doctor refer you or ask him or her to recommend one. As for the cholesterol, there are other drugs out there. I took Zocor for awhile until my insurance stopped covering it. There are a few others out there. I know what you mean about books. I have a whole collection of them, going back to the Stillman Diet of the 1960s. Even bought a new one for diabetics which talks about keeping track of carb points, but doesn't inspire. The books are tools, but the motivation to use them has to come from within. That's what we are here for. To help motivate each other.
Deb - I took another look at that Atkins book this weekend, but it didn't appeal to me. I hope you can get going with it. It doesn't really matter too much how we do it, we just need to do it.
DonnaD

Rosetta, Yes, my doc is an internist and ironically, today I looked up the name of an endocronologist. I am going for my blood work tomorrow morning.
I will discuss with him that I am going to go see the endo if we can't get things under control. I was prescribed 2000 metformin(1000am 1000pm) and glucotrol 5m in the am last yr. but over the summer when my numbers were better I started slacking off. Then I found out glucotrol causes weight gain, so I cut that out completely. My own fault my numbers are so bad. So I only think it's fair that I see what he has to say tomorrow. I went to an endo yrs ago, but after hearing my family history he tried scare tactics with me. He actually said to me once after my not losing weight " I am sitting across the desk from a dead woman" I never went back. But there is a woman on my plan that I'm thinking of going to see. So I think I might take your advice and go see her anyway. Thanks for the motivation.
Deb, what book did you get? Atkins diabetic? I didn't know there was a specific book for it. I would like to know how it differs from the reg program. Was it expensive. I'm always adding to the collection it seems.(as much as I keep saying I'll stop) Guess I could be spending the $ on worse things. But like Rosetta said, the books are tools. Even if you only learn one valuable thing, if it helps with your health, it's worth every penny. Thanks for the prayers. I don't know if I deserve them, but I need them.
I hope are little group here has a great week.

Well The pace at work has gone into the catoon zone. I'm starting to fell like Daffy Duck. The whole place has gone crazy. I'm just trying to keep myself in the right frame of mine and healthy right now. You know they do a psych test on everyone who works here. I'm thinking they have to know if your nuts enough. :dizzy:
My numbers are starting to swing wildly and I'm sure it's from working tooo much overtime and not getting enough rest. Any tips on how to manage getting rest while working like a fool will be helpful. :)
My DH is planning a Bar-b-q at our home for Sat. for my birthday. He's such a sweet guy. Going to let me sit around like the Queen that I am all Day.
Rosetta you are so right. It's how we use all this info that's the key.
Donna I got the Atkins for diabetics at Walmart for $18.00. It will also make for good reading material while on nite shift.
Have a good one, gotta run.

If not, that could increase your numbers. Also, the stress. Can you take breaks and just get away from it all for a few minutes, close your eyes and breathe? That may help. Keep us posted on the Atkins book. Pat - hurray for losing those lbs! :cb: Only 8 more to go to meet the challenge! Joanne - you are brave posting your stats. Donna -- I forgot to reply to your post. Your first endo sounds a little like my first one. She made it sound so dire that I buried my head in the sand and eventually changed doctors (she was also my internist). Let us know how your doctor's appointment goes tomorrow. :goodluck:

Deb, stress definitely makes my numbers go up. Take Rosetta's advice and try to get away during breaks.(though you mention night shift which might make that hard) what do you do? (if you don't mind my asking) I work in mortgage banking, but lately it's more like a morgue. The push came and went. We find ourselves watching the clock, which to me is worse than being busy. Let me know what you think of the book. I ate carbs today. Total atkins just makes me feel horrible. My doc prefers slow and steady(lwr carbs, more veggies) So I don't know if I'll be doing this challenge strictly atkins, but I'm still in it. Happy Birthday to the :queen: a bit early :hb: :gift:
Pat, woo hoo :cp: :cb: All I can say is I'm glad we have until Thanksgiving
Rosetta, I'm with you. I love the cooler weather. I went to the doc today. He was pretty nice considering I haven't followed his advice. I am going to end up back on several of the meds I stopped taking. Looks like the Lipitor is coming back(he said the benefits definitely outway the side effects) he doesn't think I had a stomach bug, but that the diabetic gastroparesis(sp?) needs to be treated, so back on the reglan. I'm so bummed, but I am going to follow his instructions for the next 3mos and see if the blood work improves. He should have the results back in a few days. I know they will be horrible. I'm going to try to really cut the carbs, but I'm struggling this time with atkins. It's really bothering my stomach.
Joanne, Rosetta took the words right out of my mouth, you are brave. I just look at the measuring tape and it runs and hides
Hey Rosey, hope all is well.

Good evening. Donna, I'm glad your doctor appointment went well. Sometimes they can surprise you. I've been on generic reglan for about a year. I didn't know what hit me when I first had the symptons of gastroparesis, but it sure scared me! I've been thinking of going off it so I won't be able to eat much. But I dare not. My blood sugars have been high because I ran out of medication. I'm back on it now and they've gone down but not enough. I have my next A1c in December so I hope I can get on track in time to get better numbers. I worked in mortgage banking a long time ago, in loan servicing, then administration, then in the REIT. It was one of my favorite jobs. Now I am in law and tend to have feast and famine as far as workload goes. Right now, like you, I'm in a slow time and it makes me bonkers because I have all this time to think of the things I could be doing outside the office (like laundry, cleaning) and of course, my problems. All I have to look forward to is lunch, which means I'm eating because I'm bored. But when I'm busy, I eat because I'm stressed. I'm so good at excuses :halfempty
Deb: I'm sorry you are so stressed right now. Have you had your vacation yet? If not, maybe you should think of someplace good to go. Or at least maybe a weekend getaway.

GOOD MORNING :coffee: Had another good nite so feeling pretty good today. Not sure if it's exhaustion or what but I'll take it. I'm looking forward to the weekend. Hubby is having my bday b-b-q and I plan on eating what I like, then Sunday morn I'm going on induction. As I read it the atkins for diabetics is not total carb restriction, but 2 weeks of real low carbs and then a modified atkins type diet watching the carbs very carfully. It sounds alot like what I'm hearing here. So I'll be the test case and we'll see how it will work on me. :dizzy: I have to admit I'm somewhat excited. And hoping for the best. :)
Rosetta thanks for the well wishes. I have vacation set up for the Holidays, Seems along way off, but it's really right around the corner. I hate to sound so out done. It's always this way at outage time. you would think after 20 plus years I'd be used to it. I just don't think I handle it as well as when I was younger (and more fit). But In a few weeks I'll be glad for the extra bucks in the bank.

Rosey - glad you dropped in. Deb is right. You are obviously doing something right if your clothes are loose. Your fat is turning to muscle and may still weigh the same but eventually, if you keep exercising and dieting, the weight will start going down and the muscle will cause you to burn more calories. A friend of mine started an exercise program a few months ago and she didn't start losing weight until a month ago. Now she's down 7 lbs (she's not too overweight and isn't dieting stringently). Keep going.

Deb - Hi ho, Hi ho, it's off to work you go. :D Couldn't resist that. Maybe your sleep problems have to do with carb withdrawal. One thing a big bowl of carbs does for you is make you sleepy. But keep at it and let us know how it's going. Rosey - no leaves on the trees! We're having our summer weather still. Last weekend was gorgeous - beautiful Florentine light and lovely 7oish temps with a chill at night. Now the temps have racheted up and today it was 82 -- can't wait for winter or a good rain. The city is crawling with tourists, too. I'm trying to get on track with a low calorie diet. did well yesterday until I got upset about something I couldn't resolve until today and blew it. Didn't back on wagon today but will try again tomorrow. TTYL.

So I'm fgeeling the bloat, and it is no doubt masking any progress I may (or may not) be having. :( Boy some days don't you feel like you just can't get a break. :?: :?:
Rosey glad to hear your moving that ole bum. Your right any thing that gets the heart rate up is great for burning those calories. It rained here for 3 days non-stop now the weather is nice a cool. I really like this time of year, after a long hot summer it's a nice change.
Rosetta don't be too hard on yourself. Just get back on that diet today and don't let a little slip blow it for a week, month or year. Just get back on that wagon. You can do it. ;)
Well I'm kind of missing Pat, Donna, And Joanne. Can you hear us out there.
Have a great day and Rosey I'm going to try a little dancing when I get home, sounds like a great way to reduce stress :dancer:

thanks all for the encouragement. I haven't climbed back on the wagon yet. We're having a hot spell and it makes me cranky and wanting to eat the wrong things.
Deb - You're almost to a week. You've gotta hang in there. It will get easier and your system will get used to its new diet.
Rosey - you're lucky to have your daughter to inspire you and act as your coach. I'm sure you will see some results soon.
Pat - it's too bad about the pills - you'll have to rely on diet to control your cholesterol. I wish there were some snow - or at least rain on my horizon.

Morning :coffee: somewhat better today. Boy am I glad. We'er having a little cool spell, it was 49 this morning. Rosetta wish I could send some your way to make you feel better. But try not to let the weather get you down. Start by having 1 really healthy meal a day if that's all you can manage. And the move to 2, and so on. Don't just let your self slip till you feel lost in a black hole. I know I've been lost in space many times. Remember we are here even if you just need to vent. Go ahead I'll listen. :cofdate:
Rosey you are sooo lucky to have such a support system at home. There is no way your going to fail. Can I borrow your daughter, She sounds like a real gem. Just keep up the good work. :tread:
Pat good to hear from you. Glad to hear your staying busy. Busy hands don't have time to eat the wrong things. GREAT for you. :bravo:
Hope everyone has a great weekend. I'll be getting ready to go on night shift for Monday night. Later.

Deb - thanks for the cool weather, the fog came in last night. ;) Glad you're feeling a little better. Don't let your schedule change keep you from being OP. I haven't been able to get back on track but I'll have a little talk with myself this weekend and start again. Pat - can I go to the casino with you -- I've been itching to play the slots again. good luck!

Hi all. I've been a type 2 diabetic for several yrs; but, never figured out the diet thing.
I try to eat better foods & have gone from 3BP pills a day to 1/2.
My sugar is around 160 to 170 in the am. :( I like to eat oatmeal sometimes;but I get dizzy. :dizzy: I've been wondering about the GI diet being the one for me. :?: I am a stress & emotional eater. I sneak food :s: so I won't be chowing in front of my boyfriend. He is an old fasioned cook, :chef: I started my Tae Bo again today. Couldn't do much of it; but, it's a start. I enjoy it. Makes me feel :strong:.
Any advice is welcome. TY Carol :coffee:

Well everyone sounds as if they are on the right track :cp: And Carol glad you joined us we are always happy to see a new face.
Well I'm making my 1st 12 hour night and tried to sleep as much as I could today, but it was hard. I feel pretty good but it's still early.
I'm starting to get used to the carb limit. Right now I'm on 25g a day. Not much at all. But it's starting to get easier. I have to admit that right at first I know I was in some kind of nasty withdrawal. Man glad to be over that hump. And the tom is over to, Man I'm starting to feel like a whole new woman. ;)
Hubby not happy about the night shift. He's so used to me taking care of him I wonder if he's going to make it.
Rosetta glad you got the break in the weather, And look yourself right in the eye when you have that talk. That's right, get in front of the mirror and really read yourself the riot act. Then you'll feel better and can move along. :D
Well got to get to work. Tomorrow I think I'll start a new thread this one getting long. So be on the look out.
Deb

Carol - welcome to our group. I'm counting calories not carbs. It's easier for me. My blood sugar is higher than it has been lately, especially in the morning. But I have difficulty in exercising (orthopedic problems). Do you do Tae Bo in a group or by yourself? Any kind of regular exercise will do.
Pat - glad you won some. Although we have a number of Indian casinos in California, it's easier to go to Reno (I don't drive). Last year I lost $100 on the slots -- and I was playing nickels and pennies!
Rosey - weekends are my worst times -- I've started again today.
Deb - congrats on staying OP. :cp: I hope you adjust to your new schedule. I'll look for the new thread tomorrow.

Thank you for the welcome. I am also on the 100 club. :o
I have been a little sidetracted so I've been absent for awhile.
I've have trouble finding my way around the sites. :?:
Carbs are one of my weaknesses. Chips, cheese, sweet snacks sometimes.
When I remember to Tae Bo, I have the cd's - fun if you keep at it .
I'm a terrible procrastenator. :(
Drink very week coffee all day ( one level scoop per 12cup pot) :coffee:
Trying to work on my old house and lenghten my children book manuscript.
If I sit too long my ankles swell up. Does everyone else get tired quick?

Hi all! Well, I was just diagnosed with pre-diabetes this afternoon. Any advice for the diabetic diet? I feel so overwhelmed right now. I thought this might be a good place to start. I have been in the Buddy up thread for a while (MIA for a while too because of surgery) but everyone is so nice. I would love to get some thoughts/suggestions.
Thanks,
Heidi
