Local Doctor Gives Hope To Fibromyalgia Sufferers
Reporter: Shannon Samson
New Media Producer: Kerry Corum
An Evansville, Indiana physician is going to the American Academy of Pain Management conference in San Antonio Wednesday, to present what could be a breakthrough finding. He suspects the chronic pain of diseases like fibromyalgia could be caused by a series of viruses.
Anita Held, 64-years-old, needs a basket to hold all the pills she needs to get her through the day. Fibromyalgia leaves her sore all over and constantly tired. She says, "Breathing is an effort, just moving the least little bit is just an effort. So some days I actually will sleep all day long."
Pain specialist Dr. David Johnson realized the fatigue, aches and chills many of his patients describe are the same symptoms that come with a case of the flu. So he had an idea: What if he tested them for some common viruses? "I went through and listed about three or four viruses, and didn't even know if the labs could test for them, and my gosh, they came back positive."
He eventually came up with list of 17 viruses and found that his fibromyalgia patients were all testing positive for anywhere from three to nine viruses each. Dr. Johnson believes their immune systems aren't recognizing the viruses as pathogens and as they steal cell material to replicate, the patient is left with a host of ailments. He's prescribing anti-viral medications to try to suppress the viruses, which can take years.
In the meantime, Johnson says, "I want to get the word out to physicians to test for the virus, use the anti-viral medication and let's all have some input and see if we can eradicate this condition."
That would be a dream come true for Anita Held, who just found out she has three viruses. "I am glad they found something, because now we have something to work with, is the way I look at it. That's not bad news."
She says it's good news to think maybe someday she could spend more time with her grandchildren without getting too tired.
So far, 26 of Dr. Johnson's patients have tested positive for up to nine viruses. He says six are responding well to anti-viral medication.
Besides fibromyalgia, the treatment is also helping sufferers of chronic fatigue and irritable bowel syndromes.
Dr. Johnson outlined a list of the viruses he's testing for in fibromyalgia cases:
*Epstein Barr virus EBV
*Cytomegalovirus CMV
*Herpes virus: 8 types
*Parvovirus B 19
Norwalk agent
*Rotavirus
*Enteric Coronavirus
*Enterovirus
Astrovirus
Calcivirus
*Varicella - Zoster virus VZV
Torovirus
*Adenovirus
Picovirus
Pogosta virus
Sindbis virus
*Coxsackie A and B virus
*The most frequently involved virses. Most patients will have from three to nine of these viruses at abnormal levels.
For more information on Dr. Johnson's research, contact his office in Indiana at 812-425-2662.

thanks Happy for the info...I have heard msot people test positive to thoser virus wither they have symptoms or not....did it say what kind of anti-virus meds he is using????
Mima.....here is what my support group leader said...
Panic attack ---
You may be working outside, inside, even getting ready to go to a fun meeting,
Church (where ever) and all of a sudden you may become weak, have muscle
spasms (anywhere), you could become dizzy or a 'case' of disequalibrium (a
sense of being pulled one way or the other) heart palpitations, a moment of not
seeing anything clearly or a severe burning sensation as though something had struck
you between the shoulder blades with a red-hot poker and then burning sensations
back, neck, arms, sometimes legs (this is caused by the fiber actually attacking
the nerve endings in your body and you can have this without it actually being a
panic attack). You might wake in the middle of the night with hot flashes, and
heart beating very fast and pain in your chest. Don't ask me why, I don't know that
answer except that it is related to what you have done the day before or maybe
two days before.
Boy that AZO wipped me out but helped the pain a great deal...did some ayrd work and at 10,000 steps and not too much pain! Doing laundry now and then taking a bath and washing my hair, I started pulling at it again when I was so tired and in pain. Haven't done that in years!
That's interesting Candice. I don't have full blown panic attacks anymore but sometimes I have a lot of anxiety. I lost my cool yesterday. If you remeber, Brad had to pay off the debt of someone he had cosigned a loan for. Well, we want to get the receipt from the collection agency so we can try to recoup some or all of the money. But we need a receipt. It's only listed on our charge card. Well, I have gone back and forth with this agency-he said he mailed 2 receipts but we didn't get them . So I gave hime the fax number of the drugstore-tried 4 times but they don;t have it. Called the supervisor-he was going to take care of it-NOT.Called him back and he said he doesn't usually handle calls from people. Boy, did that make me angry. Still didn't get fax. Left a message on the other one's machine and threatened to call Better Business Bureau-in MN-which I did and they are sending me a complaint form. Next step is Attorney General if this doesn't work. Just a simple receipt-for $2800. That's my story. I'll try the drugstore one more time. Well, I picked upthe checks for the condo so we are rich!! For now. Craft Fair tomorrow. went to Walmart and bought 6 containers to store stuff after. Then we bring it to another Fair in Nov. and that's where we sell all the leftovers. I'll look and see if my anxiety heightens after I have overdone it. That would be tomorrow. Mima

Well... I don't guess I've ever had an anxiety or a panic attack ... had a couple of nervous break downs, though. Does that count. (I just skip the little stuff!) :p Now, I just get mad, kick butt, and then feel guilty afterward! ;) So ... can't help you out with that! It must be a terrible feeling, though. I've heard others talking about it feeling like a brick on their chest and like they were going to pass out or fall down, etc. There was one woman I used to know who couldn't even go out of her house because of those.
Praying for you and your sister Joanne!!! Keep us posted!!! Love and hugs!
Good luck on the new Doc and Councellor Candice. I really hope you find SOMETHING that helps. You deserve it!!! Ya want me to bring my gun up and shoot the old doc for you??? I don't live too far away! :dizzy:
I'm having to buy all new clothes. I've gone from a size 18 to a size 12. I went to buy new underwear at Penney's yesterday ... was embarrassing ... didn't know what size I wore! I had to try on bras and went down 2 sizes and the ones I bought are still plenty big. Bought some undies and got them home and they are still a little too big. Good thing I only bought one pkg of 3. I needed more but I wasn't sure so played it safe. I'm hoping they'll draw up when I wash them. I bought 2 pairs of shoes and even those went down 1/2 size. I told hubby I had to have all new winter clothes ... even my coats swallow me up. You should see the new black suit I bought to wear to our Pastor's Appreciation Service Sunday. We're having a Minister from MI and I'm singing. The suit is a 12 and 'tight' with a long skirt and fitted long sleeved jacket. I've got black hose and new black shoes. Then we're having services Mon. - Wed. night, too, and I bought a black dress, a red dress and a suit (size 12 ... I can't believe it ... somebody pinch me ... ) to wear to those. Tonight I have to go to an Association Meeting and take a report. So see, I HAVE to have dress clothes. THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT! (I think I'm going to run out of panties before the week is out ... hummm!)

I am 125, size 10 petite, and I buy a 7 panties at Walmart-Hanes!!!Course I woke up at 4-Fair today-Foot hurts!!!!!!!Brad is coming to help bring stuff out-got real smart and bought 6 bins to put stuff away-no more worrying about damage. This is a 2 part deal because the Sat after Thanksgiving, we bring it to another Fair but now it can go in bins-who cares if they are orange and black. They were cheap. Made some adult bibs-let's see if they sell. Gotta make a sign. Mima-ps gorgeous day!!!!

Hello Everybody- Just a few words so I don't have to hunt you everyday... My sister Eleni and I are still in our holding pattern, waiting for surgery.. We neither one are good at that.. I bought some material and cut out a mumu to take to the hospital. Tropical print. I will look like a big mama in it. Who cares I like them full.
Mima- Who cares the color of your boxes. You will be right for the season.
Meme- OK what size panties? I wear an 8. They are a little loose but 7 would be snug and I hate snug.
Candice I notice you didn't give up your size??
Got to get my house in order before I go to hospital.. I don't want my daughter doing that while she is here..
Bye for now...Joanne

Catching up on some back posts.
Joanne, thinking and praying for you and your sister. Also that Jeanne avoids you too. Muumuu sounds like fun.
All quiet here for a change.
Wow-we had a great day yesterday!!!My body doesn't know that I can sleep now. Hope I didn't make too many people mad-I get a bit controlling when I am in charge. One lady was mad when I sold something for $3 when I told her 5. I said we mark down after 1 but I guess it was after 1. Didn't mean to do that. Packed everything up into my orange boxes-awesome-now after Thanksgiving, when we go to another Fair, we only have to cart 7 boxes!!!!And the items will be protected. Hope you are ok from Jeanne-Joanne. Mike is only going to get wind and rain-we might get it Tues and i have to travel to Northampton to work. It will probably be only 2 days and then I'm done for the year. Mima

I'm not good at waiting either ... not good at packing up stuff or selling stuff either!!! Somebody mentioned having a yard sale this past summer and I said, "No thanks ... I'll just keep my junk hidden away in the closets. I don't need money that badly right now!" ;) I sold another trailer Sat. so that's 3 commissions I can collect from 'the business' this week!!!
Having a revival at our chuch through Wed. night. Had Pastor's Appreciation Sunday and a dinner yesterday... whew ... what a lot of work. Then I get Ross and Jenna Wed. after school until Friday. I dread getting them ready for school in the mornings and having to drive them up to Cookeville. I'm like Candice, I DON'T DO MORNINGS either!!! PLUS ... I have to keep TY! Their puppy. Never ends around here. Oh well ... I keep telling myself, at least I have a life!
Lost another half-pound! (Don't quite know how I did that ... I've been eating like a pig.) I wore my new suit yesterday and everybody was commenting on how skinny I looked! I was on cloud 9
As for the panties everyone seems to be so interested in!!! :dizzy: They were a size 8 and they are too big ... even washed! Sooo... Guess I'll have to buy some sevens! My luck I'll just get my sizes all fugured out and I'll lose another 10 pounds and have to start all over again! :p

For inquiring minds.........It depends on the brand, time of day ( I wear big comfy ones to sleep in and if I am staying at home) ..rangeing from size 5 to 10 ( can't stand anything tight at all ..I guess I should just run around nude;) Now what would my crazy doc say about that!
Had a bad sinus headache today and off to my counseliong session tomorrow! Me thinks me has a yeast infection cause I am itching terribly in that personal spot! Trying the over the counter monistat...I guess I need to stay out of the sugar for a while!
Mima...hope you get that anxiety under control! I will share my counseling advice with you when I get it:)
Meme, if you lose antoher 10 you will be a walking stick!
Eleni... thanks for the update on Joanne, glad she is ok!
Happy hope you have more pep today!
Hi anna........
Well, I didn't go yesterday and not feeling 100% yet but then we never do. And it's still pouring. The good news is that there is not much work so I wouldn't be missed in that way. I have an hour to decide. I was always like that when I had to miss work-Joanne, hope you got electricity back or will soon. It;s so hot for you. I asked Mike if he wanted a generator for Christmas. Course you have to be careful with them. Talked to some people I met in Ft Myers that live nearby (here)and we are going to get together for cards next month. They are looking for a place to stay down there. If we buy something , we can rent it to them. That would be great. Bye for now. Mima

Hello Everybody.. Got my power back yesterday pm. I can tell you I hope this is the last hurricane to come our way.. I always love the rain but they can keep the wind. I have more yard clean up. I did a little for the past two days but there is lots more. It is just really hard when you are our age.I hounded mu hubby till he decided if he was going to shut me up he had to get out and help.
That's it for now...Joanne
Glad to have you and your power back, Joanne. I didn't go to work yesterday-it was pouring rain and dark and I hadn't felt well the day before. Why do I feel guilty-there wasn't much work. Instead I put away the summer clothes which means I piled them on the bed to take out to the camper, and went to Walmart to get the rest of the baby presents. Oh yeah, and strained my back a little bit. I wish I could get over this 4 am wke up. It will be 3 when it's daylight savings. Well the Red Sox are in the playoffs. I hope it doesn't turn out like last year when they lost in game 7 to the Yankees. We Red Sox fans never give up. Going to meet Auntie at Friendly's and pick up my old sewing machine. It is finally fixed so now I have 2. Mima

Well ... I could probably stand to lose 10 more pounds ... then I'd weigh 143 1/2 and be in a size 10 or maybe an 8. I've been down to 135 ... when I got married. And weighed 140 after I had my kids. But I probably won't make it back to there and I'm not trying. 'Course, I haven't been trying to get to where I am now ... and I'm happy in a size 12. At 5' 9" I look ok so I don't really care one way or the other. I just really hope I stay here for a little while anyway so I get to wear these new clothes some. I didn't get to wear the 14s hardly at all!!! A couple of the suits still fit ok because they have elastic (tops are a little loose) but most of them are way too big. I can't afford to buy new clothes 3 times in one year!!!
Glad everyone weathered the storms. We didn't get anything out of that one. One more day of kids and puppy. I'm soooo tired. I just came home this morning after taking the kids to school and, after taking care of the pets, I straightened up the house and went back to bed. I turned off the phones and ignored the driveway buzzer and crashed for 3 whole hours. I'm about to the end of my rope here. What with last weekend, revival and the kids and all it's more than I can handle. I told hubby tonight I was going to go to bed and stay there ... I'm serious ... I'm just too tired. I guess my blood count has dropped again and the anemia is dragging me down. Right now I have a headache and all my muscles are aching ... it's an effort just to raise my arms and my back muscles are trembling. I've been in tears all day just thinking about what all I had to do tonight. I have the worst part behind me, dinner, homework and baths. Just have to get them to bed and to sleep ... that's the rough part with Ross ... getting him to go to sleep. I gave him his medicine an hour early so he'd go to sleep earlier tonight. So that means he'll probably be up earlier in the morning. He gets up before 6 normally!!!
Going to go get the bedtime process started and see if I can get hubby to turn the Iraq news off ... it's getting on my nerves big time!!! Same old - same old - crap ... over and over. And never solve anything!
Rest, Meme, Rest!!! Finally, I woke up at 4:45. That's better. It takes a while to recover when we have been through a lot of work. Why do you have the children all the time? Are the parents away? I can't wait to babysit for Evan-I bought an umbrella stroller at the church yard sale. Mike is on his way. We will see him Sunday night. I am in the process of putting our summer things in the camper-don't have to put them away anymore. Today, I have to get caught up in paper work. Business way ahead. Hi everyone. Mima

Well finally had to break down and call the gyno for this yeast thing..it was painfully instense yesterday I wanted to curl up and die! Counseling was just an into, she is kinda like Tyne Daily...frumpy... but nice...... I couldn't even get all my errnad run cause the walking made my crotch area hurt so bad. can't sit for long either, had to take extra meds to sleep and Benedryl for the itching..she gave me the presciption cream and if I'm not better I have to go see her. Good thing is my appetite is gone!
Got too much to do to be in this shape!!!!!!! I know you all know the drill!
Mima...slow down!
Joanne..glad you are back up and running....take it slow...I know... I should take my own advice!
Meme...at 5'9" you could be a model!

Mima- When are you coming down? I bet it seems strange ,summer clothes in the winter.. Ofcourse our winters are not like yours..I would give anything to have one more grand child! My son is talking marriage, but, she may not have one. She is 44 years old/young. I just hope they are happy.
Meme- You sound like the right size. I am 146 and want to stay under 145. It is really hard work for me.. I am a size 12 too. I am comfortable with that size. It is a little loose and that is ok.I hope you feel better soon.
Candice- Do you go into hot tubs? They are a sure fire way to get vag.infections. But, you know that. I used to have them really bad when I worked. I wore poly all the time. Those hose and pants are heat producing.Since I have lost weight,I wear cotton most of the time and I am usually in shorts..Eat lots of yogart.
Got a few more things to catch up on. Bye for now...Joanne

Candice ... I have people tell me that all the time ... but ... alas, I have too, too many, many scars! :p I have one running up my left knee that is 7 inches long and 3 small ones on my right knee, one on my belly, one on each side, one on my ankle, two on my arm, one on my wrist and even one on my left breast! I'd have to wear clothes that covered me from my boobs to my ankles!!!
As for the kids ... they'd like me to keep them more than I do! Their parents are in Nashville for a siminar or something like that. They both work at the hospital and had to go at the same time for something. I don't mind keeping them now and then if I feel good, as a matter of fact, I enjoy it. I just happen not to feel good right now! I really need to get the other 2 and keep them ... just not up to it! I know my DIL gets mad at me because I keep my daughter's 2 more than I do my son's but seems they are more 'needy' or something. Or maybe they just ask more! Ask any ye shall receive! ;)
Wish I could pack up my summer clothes and go to FL ... or Hawaii or Tahiti or somewhere - anywhere - for a few months and just sleep! Pack up some books and read and sleep and sleep and sleep. Bears have it all figured out. Eat all summer and sleep all winter.

Hi all.
Sorry to have been gone for so long. I have been reading but not posting. I have been hurting and have a sinus problem. I need to go to the Dr. but haven't found the time.
My son is getting married on 16 Oct. and I am the one who is never home!! We have been gone every weekend and will continue to be until the 16th. It takes me several days upon my return to re-energize and then I have to go again. Last week I was in Edmonton looking after my gd as daughter had to go work at a trade show and hubby was at work. I don't think any of these young people have heard of babysitters. I enjoy being with my gd but boy, I get so darn tired. The week before that, my girlfriend came and visited for the week.
To add to all this, my oldest brother (62 yrs) had a heart attack on Wednesday. Today, they did and angioplast and inserted a stent, so he should do ok. This is a man that has never been sick, and always exercises and watches his diet. He has more energy than 10 people combined. He had no high bp, cholestrol or anything else. It just shouldn't have happened. My other brother (60 yrs) has diabetes, low thyroid, and a heart condition. He is overweight, does not exercise and is a couch potato. I sure hope I miss this one!
I'm sorry I can't type to each of you, but I hope you all have a good weekend. Catch you next week.
Wow-everyone has been busy. Sorry about your yeast, Candice. Hate those things and have had plenty!!! Sugar doesn't help plus you can get some acidophalus in the drugstore to take =yogurt too helps. Sugar free. It will go away. Coming down right after Thanksgiving and kids coming down for Christmas so it will be busy. Your surgery is soon Joanne. Prayers for you. Bye for now Mima

The yeast thing is much better but still itch but no pain down there for once! Now I'm sitting here with an ice pack on my head...I banged it on the fuse box in the basement cleaning up after a sick cat, hit my head so hard it knocked me off my feet, I scraped my left arm from the elbow to the shoulder and cut my finger (on a rusty old bed frame), twisted my right side so I bet Im gonna be sore.....I am trying to stay awake for a few hours to make sure I do not have a concusion or anything like that..then I will take my meds and try to get some rest! I'm getting pretty darn sore now.....I fell on my but and have no cushion back there! Maybe I should go bake something?????? We had a freeze last night so I need to through out all my dead plants I didn't protect!
Hey Candice, when was your last tetanus shot-if more than 10, you made need a booster. Rusty frame cut-I cut myself on barbed wire two years ago and had to be updated. Sorry about your injuries but glad yeast thing is better, My son Mike left at 9-he stayed overnight. He was up here to pick up baseball cards and he forgot what cool weather is like but was glad to see the foliage . I was doing his shipping at 7 this morning-my job in FL sometimes. Went to my niece's shower-it was great!!! No duplicates. And c0-hostess had games and prizes. Cindy has a big belly!!! And she has 2 months to go. Gotta go get dressed. Prayers Joanne. Mima

Meme- There is a light at the end of the tunnel! The G/children grow up!
Hope you are feeling better.
Happy- Hope you too are feeling better by now.. So your son is getting married. Mine too although he hasn't set a date yet. First they say April, then Jan. who knows. I say ,just get it done.. They are together anyhow. They both have been married before. I told them ,make it small and save some money..But they don't want my thoughts.. They have to do it there way..
Bye...Joanne
Hope everything is fine Joanne. What about your food? I am getting nervous about the stress test because I went for a walk yesterday and was walking really fast and I got the pain in my chest and it lasted longer. I hope I don't have heart disease but then they would put a stint in/ glad it's a while before we go away. Mike is back in Florida. Went from Ny to Fl in 22 hours with his friend. I gave him a seatbelt lecture. My daughter came for supper last night and brought some apples. Going to make apple crisp today. I went shopping yesterday and pretended I had money and bought 4 pieces by Alfred Dunner-a brand my mother used to buy!!!I have turned into my mother!!!!The 10 petite pants fit me perfectly. I bought an outfit for Brad's high school reunion party and jeans and a gorgeous sweater for Fall/ I usually shop at Walmart but I never used to-only store nearby. Anyhow-it was nice to get those things. I had to get my Spelt bread in Worcester-bought 6 loaves to freeze. Probably last me 6 months. Bye for now Mima Hi Rita

Just a note to let you know Joanne is doing good. NO cancer. She is having some pain but overall she is doing good.
That's wonderfu; news Eleni. Thanks! When are you getting your procedure? I reread my post that said I was getting bored. I got in trouble yesterday because I told Brad how to run his business. I guess I'd better find something to do. Walked again yesterday. And I was ok. Wonder if it's related to asthma. Which I don't have full blown but I do wheeze. Like I said I'd better get busy. Crisco-that's too funny, Candice. Hope your diflucan works. Bye for now. Mima

Great to hear from you, Joanne. Mima, good luck on test tomorrow - and on feeling well enough to take it. I'm finally scheduled for endoscopy on Nov 8. Doing better though and the urge to cancel is there but i guess I'll be better off knowing what is/was going on. Gastro changed me from Protonix to Nexium.
Candice, I agree - what a time you've been having.
Meme, Happy, Ally - hope you're all doing well (or well enough).
Well, I went to the doctor and he gave me zythromax and a new inhaler, Advair. I already feel better so I guess I will go to lunch at my friend's house-going to see the teachers I work with. Losing hope for the Red Sox. But now they will be in Boston. Went to the mall and finally got my Keds sneakers and a couple of hostess gifts. I will be happy to have the stress test over-worst part no coffee but at least breakfast. Hope they don't find anything to have surgery. I should be happy they can do surgery. It makes me feel old. Not much heart disease in my family-lots of arthritis related stuff, asthma, and allergies. My aunt insists my grandmothewr had fibro. And my cousin does. Enough!!!Hi everyone. Bye Mima

Glad you are feeling better Mima! So rainy and cold here...I have been trying to get a jump on Christmas and have been digging through my storage boxes to find gifts I have to mail........starting my cards too, gotta update my address list. Oven still on the blink so no baking.........I miss it..Dh does not to get a new one right now so I guess will will see if we can get it fixed.
Good morning-non coffee today because I am going to have the stress test-don't know if I'll be able to walk. I'm going back to bed. Mima

Mima- I hope your stress test turns out O.K.You need to come to Florida early..
Candice-Happy- Christmas already! I don't think about that till at least Thanksgiving is over!!
The days seem to be getting better. Pain still with me ,but , Dr. says it will be awhile. This surgery was a lot more than I expected. They don't tell you the whole thing. They don't tell you they are going to open you up 8-9 inches etc. I was looking for a bandaid..
My sister is still waiting for them to install her lifeline(pacemaker). Her hubby in the meantime had a stress test and now he has to have a heart cath. It never rains but it pours lately in this family. My other sister ,Mary, had back surgery the end of last year. She fell last week and has a cracked vertebra just above where they put the rods in her back.. She is back in her back brace in the hopes it will heal itself..
Hello Meme..
Hope all of you have a good weekend..
Bye, Joanne

Hi everybody. Sorry to have not been on, but I haven't been feeling that good. My son is getting married tomorrow, so we are off to Edmonton again, for the 6th weekend in a row. That is part of the reason I don't feel so good. It takes me the week to catch up so I can go again ;)
Mima - I hope your test came out ok.
Joanne - Glad you are feeling better. Sure have been thinking about you and your sister. She was kind enough to let us know about you during the hurricanes.
Candice - I am joining you with this darn yeast infection. I have a cream, plus Diflucan. Took one on Wednesday and today the system seemed to flush. I will take another on Sunday night. I have 4 of them to take. Hope it kills this yeast once and for all. I seem to be plagued with it for the past several years.
Hi Meme - haven't heard from you. Hope you're feeling ok.
Everybody have a good weekend.
Good morning-I had such an awful headache from no coffee that I was miserable waiting for test-I only did 4 minutes on the treadmill but they said my heart rate was up to get a good picture-now waiting for the report. ps-I threw up waiting-wonder if it was from my meds. Joanne-I guess rest is what heals your body, Have a wonderful wedding, Anne. Send us a picture. Where is Meme? and Candice and Anagram ? Hi to all. Mima
