Hi I'm Deb. I'm really new to 3FC's and still pretty new to living with diabetes. My doctor has a pretty grim veiw of me ever losing weight, since he's been on my case for a number of years. And I can't say as I blame him. :^: But I do think that with a little support and encoragement I could make progress.

I'm looking for others who face losing weight while trying to maintain blood suger counts in a good range. And hoping we can share tips and laughs along the way. :D And in the end we can all learn from each other.

So let me hear from you gals.

Hi, I am also new to diabetes, just been diagnosed last month. I am at the "I am so bummed" stage, but I am trying to cope. I am going to a clinic about diabetes, so I can learn more. I am trying to eat healthy, but sometimes it gets hard, especially going out to dinner. Somehow, I just can't see me ordering a salad, while everybody else is having a great dinner. Well anyhow, maybe we can support each other in tips about what to eat,and what works . bye for now Pat

Hi everyone! Glad to see there's a new thread for us diabetics!

I was diagnosed last November, so I'm coming up on a year now. Since being diagnosed I've managed to lose about 20 pounds. And, it's made a major difference in my blood sugar levels. I went from 2 pills a day of glucophage to 0. My blood sugar readings in the morning have been from 80 to 96. I have to say that diet and exercise has been the key. I have found that if I stay on a low-carb diet, then I can lose weight and keep my reading in the excellent range. I stay under 30gms of carbs per day.

When I originally started trying to lose weight the dietician told me to just watch my fat intake and keep my carbs around 120 per day. This didn't work for me. I was hungry all the time and I wasn't losing any weight. When I decided to adjust my carbs to the level I'm at now, I talked to my doctor about it first. She agreed to have me try it and it has really worked. Most of my carbohydrate count comes from vegetables, and high fiber fruits everyone once in a while.

Good luck everyone! We can lose weight with this disease, it's just a matter of finding a plan that works for your system, and persistance. Don't lose hope!

Wow back from the weekend and really glad to see everybody!! This is going to be great! Well of corse I didn't watch things as close as I should have over the weekend, But I did manage to say no to the worst things. But I'm really feeling a little out of sorts today. Can't quite put my finger on it, so need to be really good today. And I'm going to weigh and get a good starting point for this new journey. Pat's, Roesy glad your with us and hope you'll find this what we need. Rosetta sorry your so tired you could be working to hard. :(
I'm also going to try to cut back on my carbs. I think the class I went to has me eating too many as well. I'm needing some good tips on how to make sure I'm not hungry while watching the carbs. And also not eating to much fat in the process. I can see where we get so confused. To much data for me sometimes.
Well got to get to work for now see you chicks later tonight.
Have a great day!

Good evening and welcome rosey and patsy (who I said hello to on another thread). Our San Francisco "summer" has kicked in with a vengeance and we've had several days of temperatures have been in the 90s. I stayed in all weekend so I'm crabby. Also no air conditioning at work. Ah I wish the fog were back! Rosey, losing 23 lbs is no little accomplishment. Bravo! Good idea to join Curves. Exercise is vital to diabetics and will help your sugars go down. As for carbs, I admit I'm not good at counting things. I know that refined carbs are bad for us and we should avoid them as much as possible. Kerri has the right idea about getting most of her carbs from vegs and some fruits. I have some info from the diabetes dietician which I'll check to see if any percentages are mentioned. Recently I've been taking sandwiches to work made from low calorie bread (40 cals. a slice), low fat cheese and cucumbers. That was working well until I fell off the wagon and am back to my bad habits. I have a bad achilles tendon which has made it difficult for me to walk the last couple of years and a recurrent corn which I have regularly attended to by a podiatrist. (Ladies, this is one thing you must be careful with -- don't use any store bought stuff to treat corns - go to a podiatrist to have them treated - otherwise you could end up with a hole in your foot). Plus I have a problem with my right shoulder which prevents me from lifting my arm above my head. But I'm going to figure out a way around all this and start moving because that is the only way to get blood sugar under control. By the way, Kerri, how do you get your morning sugars so low? 80-90 is normal! Keep it up. Deb, you're probably tired from the long weekend and hopefully you'll snap out of it. The only thing I can think of that fills me up when I'm hungry is an apple. I don't really know the carb count, but it works for me. :)

Good morning all. :coffee: Well I weighed yesterday and gained 2 pounds over the weekend. Not the result I'm trying to acheive. So I'm pretty bummed about that this morning. :( And I think I am A little burnt out from the weekend, And didn't get to bed till late last night, so I'm really in rare form this morning, Even a little crabby with the hubby. :rollpin:
I'm going to have to try this carb thing out to see how my body and numbers react to such a change. All I know for sure is my pants are so tight they hurt this morning. Talk about a reminder all day long. I'll be miserable this afternoon.
Well guess I'll go for now, I'm just so cheery this morning.

Hi everybody, I am also trying to watch my carbs. Yes, it is a challenge. I am starting back to curves. I will start when the weather gets a little too cool to walk. Now, I try to walk everyday, while the weather is good.Monday, I go to a class at a hospital to learn about diabetes.(rookie) I am anxious to see what a nutritionist says about what to eat, what not to eat,Yada yada yada. It does get confusing.Does anybody have problems with numbness in the legs? I do. I went to a neurolgist, and took a test. He said I had Neuropathy in my legs. It particularly bothers me at night, but I keep on walking and exercising so it don't get worse. Any tips on this one? I hope this thread remains active. I enjoy "talking" to you. Have a great weekend! Pat

I forgot to mention. I am from New Jersey. I am a lifetime member of WW, (Okay, I am over my set weight by five pounds, so I am working on it by exercising . I find it very hard to lose weight with diabetes. Since I have been diagnosed only 2 months ago. everything is new. I am at the point where I am watching what I eat to stay healthy more than watching the scale. Of course, when I lose a pound or two, I feel excited. I am upping my fruits and veggies. I am not a big fan of veggies, but I am trying. As a sna ck, I buy the fresh carrot chips, and a fatfree dip. No, they aren't my beloved potato chips, but I can pretend can't I? Any hints on snackie-poos out there? This is an old trick, frozen grapes, they are good, and I feel like I am eating candy(good imagination) Speaking of that, anybody have any brands of sugarfree and low carb candy they enjoy? Bye for now

Hi everyone..just got back from curves and shopping..had a good workout.. my but im sore and tired..went to the grocery store and researched lo carb products..they really have alot..so i bought a few things like locarb bread..and i use the locarb tortilla for wrap sandwhiches..also found some salad dressings..and decaff coffee as i just learned that caffene makes your sugar levels spike :?: i luv my coffee.. usually have 2 cups of folgers mocha motion every morning..but 7g of sugar and 14 carbs per cup :fr:  so its something im giving up..as limiting my carbs to 30-60 aday.. 24 gs for coffee is to much..i tried the apple for snacks and that helps.. also tried the diet soda and a little whipping cream..yummy.. thanks..patsy..you wanted snack ideas..air popped popcorn and use pam butter flavoed spray and whatever seasonings you like..sf jello and puddings.. a smoothie made with ice, skim milk ,frozen strawberries(no sugar ones or whatever fruit you like)and splenda sweetner..then add a few spoonfuls of fat free cool whip and blend..i also freeze locarb yougart and use it like ice cream..you can make your own pchips.. just slice potatoes really thin spray with pam bake in hot oven(450 degrees) sprinkle with whatever seasoning you like.. i have found i like russel stover sugar free chocolate the best..as for hard candy dont eat to many as they act like a laxative :( .. i see that they have locarb candy now but dont know thw sugar content..anyways we need to help each other with all our tips as i really struggle but am determined that i can eat healthy loose weight and still be happy..i guess i have to just rethink things..not a negative but a positive..anyways will check in tomorrow.. have agreat weekend every one.. remember baby steps so we dont get discouraged...and drink your water till you slosh   rosey

Hi there. The fog has finally come in and cooled things off. I got so pooped from the heat I called in sick yesterday to recover. Not been very good though. The hot weather has led me to the ice cream store. Enough said.

Patsy - sorry about your neuropathy. My left big toe is numb but I'm not sure it's neruopathy. May have come from a too-narrow shoe. Anyway, its a wierd feeling. I hope yo retain more from your diabetes classes than I did. I understood what the nutritionist was saying when she said it but now it's a little fuzzy. I looked at a sample menu she gave me and there are 180 carbs in it! But they are all complex carbs. I think that's the problem with a lot of the lo carb products. They don't provide the same nutrition as the complex carbs do.

Rosey - thanks for the snack tips. I didn't know that about caffeine. You are so good to give up your morning coffee drink. I drink a vente Starbucks tea every weekday with 3 sugar lumps (15 grams of carb) and a little milk. When my doc suggested I switch to artificial sweeteners I just shook my head. He rolled his eyes and sighed.

Well, now that the weather has cooled down, I will try to get in some walking and start the diet again from scratch. I generally know what to do, I just have a hard time getting started.

2-round - Hope all that training isn't frying your brain.

Take care, all, and have a good weekend.

Hi everybody, I hope this thread remains active. It is good to know we are not alone in our "finger pricking" AKRosey, thank you for the tips on snacks. I think I will try the potato to make my own "chips" Rosettastone, I will let you know my take on the class. I think this is the trouble, there is so many differences of opinions on dieting for diabetics, it gets confusing. I am anxious to see if my counts are okay. I have written them down. I never fail to take it in the morning, but so many times, I am out and don't take my blood sugar.(or I just plain forget) I will see when I go the class, but I get the feeling there will be different opinions on that too. You gals probably know this, but I read on the internet that if you take 1/4 teaspoon of cinnimon everyday, it should help the blood sugar count go down. So what the heck, what is the worse that could happen, so everymorning, I have Carb Control Light and fit yogurt and mix my cinnimon in the cup. It is only 60 calories and 3 grams of carbs and it has splenda in it. That is not the only thing I have for breakfast, but I like to think of it as my morning dessert. Any more hints out there ladies, let's share our little diet tricks. Everybody have a great wekend and happy pricking!

Hey all sorry I've been MIA for a couple of days. But I really had fun reading all the great tips from you gals. And just in the nick of time. I'm off to the grocery for the weekly shopping. Dear hubby wants jambalya tonight. Not exactly low carb. So I'll fix him a small pot and see if I can make something else for myself. It's just cooking 2 meals for 2 people is a bit extream. But I'm on the hunt for something i can do easy for my self. :?:
Thanks for the tip on the grapes, I really like those. And already gave up the coffee and am drinking decafe tea. Boy I wonder how much caffine is in a Louisianna cup of coffee. :fr:
I'm going to try and get in the pool this afternoon and move this old body around. Still to hot here to try walking. You could have heat stroke at 10pm
And I also have neuopathy in my left foot, and don't know why but it's worse at night. My nerologist gives me a couple of drugs to help with the pain and spazums. Pills, pills, pills. Man I just love this life.
Have a great day.

Hi everybody, It is nice for gals to give their bio. So here is mine. I have been widowed for twelve years. I have 3 daughters and 1 son. They are all married and I have 9 grandchildren.(Ranging from 14 years old down to 2 years old.) All beautiful of course. I am from New Jersey, and live in a small town. I grew up in this town, went to school here, so it is a great feeling. I am now retired, but I am quite active. I have great girlfriends,go bowling-play dominos- enjoy some great vacations. went to Hawaii in April and I am going on a cruise on the 25th of this month. The cruise starts in San Francisco and hits resort towns like Costa Rica, Alcapoca(spelled wrong) Aruba, but the biggie is we are going thru the Panama canal and ending up in Fort Lauderdale, and then flying home. (I feel so spoiled) I will be going back to curves after my cruise, I walk, garden, and with nine Grandchildren, you know I am busy with them. I was married for thirty four years when my husband died. I moved from my big old house and went into a little rancher. I live alone, and I love it. My one daughter and son live near me. That makes it real nice, and the other two daughters live an hour away toward the shore. I have a boyfriend. He is great. When my husband died, I thought that was the end of any relationships, so I am really surprised over this, so my saying is "never say never" Talk more later

I forgot to tell you gals, I have justben diagnosed with diabetes, I am not on any meds yet, I am trying without, we will see. I also am on zocar, benicar for high blood pressure and hydrea, Thats another story. Real quick, I have polucythemia which means my body makestwo much blood, so for a while I had to have four plebonomies(taking a pint of blood out of me) but the medicine is working and I feel fine. When my blood cells were out of whack, I was so exhausted, I didn't know what was the matter with me. That happened in April, the diabetes in June. I wonder if polycythemia brought it on.(Who knows) Anyhoo, I am doing good, but Ihave neuropathy, and it bothers me at night.Enough of whining, I feel good and I am going to a polka festival today. life is good have a great week

I have 1 grown son, and now a step son and daughter. I will be a grandmother for the first time in march. I work in the Nuclear Power industry which leaves little time for hobbies. But I do enjoy traveling when on vacation, and family is very big in my life. I've known that I have diabetes for about a year. I take actos, and also meds for hb, hcol, and also neropothy in my foot. I'm 5'3" and weigh 292. Hince the name 2round. And I would really love to get back into water sports which means I must loose weight to be able to particapate. My dh wants to buy a sailboat, and I'm looking forward to being able to sail with him. It is nice to know everybody's bio. It makes this thread more "human'It is good to know we are from all over the country, but we can still support each other, because we seem to be in the same boat with the weight issues and the diabetes. I went to the diabetes class today. Learned a little more about diabetes. I got a little teary eyed, because I just didn't want to be there, but then I thought "Get over yourself and deal with this disorder,as it is treatable." Do any of you gals feel that way sometimes or do you get used to the blood sugar monitoring? Enough of my pitty party. I am going for a nice walk and then see my grandchild play field hockey. I was a field hockey referee for 12 years and I was in a women's field hockey league until I was 34 years old so I really enjoy watching the game. Talk to you gals soon.

:comp: I guess I should add to the bios. I'm 58, single, live in a small studio apartment in San Francisco. No pets or plants -- not enough room. I'm a legal assistant/secretary. My interests are reading, films, art, music (Beatles to Beethoven), popular culture and things French and Italian. Also addicted to computer games. I don't cook much of anything so much of my eating is takeout, of which this city has an abundance. I weigh over 300 lbs and am concerned because I don't exercise at all. Five years ago I'd got down to 215 and was well on my way to thinness, walking home up the hills every day and doing tai chi. Completely off the meds. Depression put some of the weight back on, then I hurt both achilles and couldn't do much walking without pain. As if that weren't enough I developed a right shoulder problem so I can't do most upper body exercises. A year ago I developed gastroparesis and panicked. Went to an endocrinologist who put me on Actos (in addition to Glucophage and Glucotrol). It helps lower my sugars but makes my feet swell and I've put on about 35 more lbs. I've been diabetic for about 10 years but I haven't really been good about controlling my diet. I'm having a hard time getting started. The last few months I've on and off diets. My goal is to get down below 200 before I turn 60 in a year and a half from now. Problem is I'm having a hard time getting motivated. Looks like we are all in similar boats so maybe we can help each other. Well, enough about me.

2round -- you have a pool?! Lucky you. That's perfect exercise. You can do aquatic exercise which will take the pressure off your joints. Maybe you can get a book on the kind of exercises to do.

Patsy - I didn't know that about cinnamon. I'll try to put that in my morning yogurt. Your cruise sounds terrific. I sometimes think about doing one to Alaska but I'm afraid I would just eat the whole time. I also take cholesterol and high blood pressure drugs (lipitor and diovan). Hope you dance your :censored: at the polka festival. Thanks for the tip on the other website. I'll check it out.

Rosey - bravo for you going to Curves! You go girl!

Paperdoll - I need to control my cholesterol too, even though with the Lipitor my numbers are in the safe range. It really comes down to limiting fat intake.

Hope the week starts well for everyone.

Moose parmesan and spaghetti-Moose paddies and mashed potatoes---???? just kidding, it sounds to me you have a good full life and a manly man for a hubby. Talk to you soon

I've been lurking around this thread for a couple days. My name is Joanne (homebound), and I'm not diabetic, but I'm borderline :p . I'm 54 years old, no kids at home; just me and DH. I'm partially paralyzed (right leg-due to ruptured disc), hence the name homebound. Right now, I'm recovering from a broken right ankle, and 5 1/2 weeks of hospitalization for a bone infection. I'm watching my weight by limiting portions, trying to cut back on carbs, and just eating healthy.

2 Round: I noticed your post is from Louisiana. You guys are in our prayers. I live in SE Georgia, and we've had close calls with both Charley and Frances  You also mentioned that you have neuropathy in your left foot-I have it in my right; and it's the pits  My Dr. has me on Neurontin and Baclofen-they help some.

Somebody mentioned moose? I used to live in Maine, and there were a few people I knew who liked moose steak-I'll pass, thanks! :p

I'll be dropping in again soon!

Hi ladies. Deb -- I'll say a little prayer that Ivan misses you and your family. In the meantime, keep your chins up. Rosey, what a talent you are! 300 cards -- all handmade. Wow.! I have a suggestion for your moose: grind it and put it through a sieve then cook it in a mousse pan. Put a French sauce over it and call it "moose a la mousse." Joanne - welcome to our thread. What a trial you have had and are still having. It's hard to lose weight when you aren't mobile but not impossible. Rather than worry about carbs right now (except the obvious - bread, desserts, etc.) I would recommend strictly controlling calories since your calorie burning is presently very constricted. The WebMD site has a calorie calculator where you can figure out how many calories you need to maintain present weight depending on your activity level. If you stay under that then you can lose weight.
Have a nice evening all.

Good morning all. And Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers. We spent all last night getting everything tied down and ready for the big blow. We are hoping to be on the goodside of this thing, if there is one.
Joanne glad you decided to join in. I also take Neurontin and Baclofen, and there are still good and bad days, but I've learned to live with it, and do the best I can. The suggestion from Rosetta is great on just watching your cals. for now. If your borderline the weight is a real key. I wish I had done something sooner so I wouldn't be in the spot I'm in now. But so much for that. Gald to have another Southern Belle in the group.
We have laid in supplies in case we loose power here and I'll be trying my best to stay op as much as possible.
If I'm out of touch for a day or 2 don't worry I'll be back soon.
Love ya much!

Hello, Soooooooo glad I found all of you! I have just been told I have Type 2 Diabetes and not dealing very well with it, closing in on my 60th birthday and sure don`t have the energy I use to. My sons have all moved away and I am divorced so cooking is not for me. I did very well on Atkins low carb until I had to add other foods on the second part of it, now I just want to keep my carbs low so I can lose weight. No medicine as of yet my doctor feels I can do it with diet and exercise.I use to run so I`m hoping to get back into that. May I ask "When you were told you have it did you get angry or upset?? Would really like some input. Thank You ;)

Hi Meadow -- welcome to the thread. Yes, I was depressed and angry when I was diagnosed about ten years ago. I shouldn't have been surprised because my mother developed it when she was in her 50s. I was mad because I thought I had another ten years to clean up my act. Come to think of it, I'm still p.o.'d and depressed. Especially having to take meds and having to be careful about eating enough to keep the sugar on an even keel. So you came to the right place. We are all trying to deal with it the best we can. If you can get back running regularly you will be able to stay off meds for a long time. Rosey -- you're going to be doing the whole circuit at Curves in no time. It's great that your dd is there to help and encourage you. Joanne - have you heard of Miriam Nelson's book - Strong Women, Strong Bones. :strong: It shows you how to weight train and has exercises with weights that chairbound women can do. She also has one on weight loss and another on nutrition. They're really good books.

I know we're all thinking of Deb (2round) hunkered down there in Louisiana waiting for Ivan to get on his way. Hope you're on his "good" side Deb.

Hi everybody. Meadowlark- I found out I had diabetes 2 and was very upset about it. I also am trying to control it without drugs. I am watching what I eat and doing exercises. I also am in my 60's live alone and not exactly a slave to my stove. I was diagnosed with polycythemia(my body makes too much blood cells) This was very scary and upsetting to me, as I kept active, exercised and ate fairly well. That was in March, so in June, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, I like to hit the roof. So I had a lot of pitty parties and the why me, but then I thought just deal with it, but I have to admit, I get down some times. The polycythemia gets me fatigued alot, so I have to rest, I am used to going full steam. But diabetes and poly is treatable, so we might as well deal with it. Have a good day, and let us hope we can do this diabetes thing without drugs'. Hope to talk to everybody again. Have a great weekend!

Well today I treated myself to staying in bed late. Something I very rarely do. But it was nice since I've been working so hard lately.
Stepped on the scale yesterday, something I normally only do once a week. And I was down 2 pounds. Man was I glad to see that scale move in the right direction for a change. So I'm going to be extra good this weekend and watch those carbs.

Rosey you are a real inspiration. You've got me thinking about checking out curves. They just opened one in my area. And it's right on my way home from work. Is it very expensive?

Took a chicken out for dinner going to do the rotiserie thing. With a salad and nice veggie. And then I think I make a nice chicken salad with the left overs. Does anybody have any good meal ideas that are low carb that also appeal to the DH. I really need those ideas.

Hi, I'm Donna and I've been visiting 3fc since jan this yr. I am in a really down mood as far as this disease goes. That's why I shouldn't be posting. I'm am really sick of the disease and sick of trying. I was diagnosed about 8 or 9 yrs ago, but the last 4 yrs have been horrible. Lots of meds and no control. Last yr I followed sugar busters(SB) and my #'s came down. (I have a tendancy to have very high morning blood sugars that come down during the day 150 was the average low when I was doing well) I lost 30 doing SB and my morning #'s were about 140. Then I switched to a new doctor because my old doc seemed to be listening with a deaf ear. He felt I'd never lose(probably because he's been after me for yrs and I've only yo-yo'd) and he kept suggesting gastric bypass surgery (not for me) So the new doctor ( a woman this time) who works in a big practice discovers I'm very anemic(I was always anemic, but this was pretty bad according to her) So the tests began. Different docs, lots of tests, lots of stress(even bone marrow test which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy) Well the 30lbs I lost found their way back and right back to old habits. Well, my morning sugars as of last month were in the 250 range  So I decided to cut the carbs once and for all and start Atkins. Well, I started by peaking with a 271 reading on tuesday and today down to 225(taking 1000 glucophage at nite, supposed to take 2500 total, but then I don't lose at all) Then I read a post about Atkins being dangerous for diabetics after first reading it's the best diet for diabetics. I have taken in so much information about diabeties treatment, diets etc...
So much conflicting info. Some say coffee is good, brings #'s down. Others say coffee is bad, causes spikes. Low carb, high protein, low protein, high fat, who knows what to do anymore. And there isn't a decent doctor to be found. All wrapped up in insurance and liabilities. I just am exhausted from trying and by my numbers, I'm killing myself trying.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I just don't know what to do anymore.

donna have to jump in here. i know just what you are talking about. i had my numbers up in the 300s then i would get scared call the dr. and he would give me more meds. which in turn made me gain weight. i was mad at the dr. mad at myself. finaqlly i decided to try atkins. my numbers came down really fast and i lost 40 lbs. i now take metform 500 only when i need it. dr, is finally happy too.
yor glucopagh should not make you gain weight, keep trying it will work. good luck. you can do it
hi to everyone else. congrats on the 2 lbs. deb!!

Hi Pat,

You don't know how I needed to hear something positive from someone who knows what I'm talking about. How fast did they come down? What do you consider a drop. 271 to 225 in 5 days didn't seem significant to me but maybe it is. How long have you been doing Atkins? 40lbs! Congrats!
That's fantastic and also great news that you have the metformin down to almost non existant. You must be so proud of yourself. :cp:

Thank you so much for giving me some hope when I was feeling so hopeless.
:thanks:

And to Pat and everyone else here, I'm sorry for being so negative. It's been a really long haul. I'm usually much more supportive and upbeat, but today I was feeling really defeated. :(

So if you all don't mind, and I promise to be more optamistic, I'd like to stick around this thread.

I'm 44, married 27 yrs to my best friend. We have 3 sons, 26,22 & 21. (all still home and unmarried) I work in mortgage banking. Hobbies include movies, motorcycles( I rode my own until an accident, now just a happy passenger)
love to go for walks. Lately, not much else. Spend a lot of time trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong
We live just about 30 minutes or so outside New York City (NYC).
My goal is to get a hold of my health and turn it around as I lost my mom at the young age of 49. She died from a blod clot to the heart but all stemming from complications of out of control diabetes. You'd think that would have been a lesson to me. But for years I felt that was my fate and nothing would change it. But I'm here to change. :crossed:

Hi all. 2round - how do you get up at 4 a.m.!! I crawl out of bed just before 8 to get to work at 9 and I'm still dragging. :coffee: Donna -- If you're depressed about being diabetic and having trouble losing weight, you've found the right place. We're all in the same boat and have bad days and better days. My sugar was high and I had to cut down Glucophage because it wasn't mixing well with the meds I take for gastroparesis. After much resistance on my part, I began taking Actos with Glucotrol. The sugars came down but the weight went up as well as my feet swelled up. I have high morning sugars (this morning it was 180) and the Actos didn't seem to affect that. I'm working with my doctor to find the right combo of drugs. I haven't been eating right, not exercising and am having trouble getting on a program I can stick with. My mother also had Type II diabetes, so I know the consequences. I wouldn't go on Atkins because it calls for too much protein which isn't good for the kidneys and besides, I'd just use it as an excuse to pig out on bacon. ummm. There is, however, a new book out on Atkins and diabetes which you might want to check out. You don't say if you exercise regularly. That should help with the numbers.
Rosey - Paperdoll is right -- just keep going to Curves and eventually it will get easier. Kudos to you for doing something so positive. Just think it only taking a small amount of time from doing what you enjoy. I need to pull myself away from computer games in the evening and start moving. :kickcan:

Hi everybody,
Well, I was running late today as I didn't sleep well with the back problem. Went to the chiropractor today and it really helped. I'm hoping I can get some very needed sleep today.

Rosetta, I was on medication for gastroparesis also, Reglin. But after going on line I realized it was something I didn't want to be on long term. So I weaned myself off it. It helped and the problem hasn't come back(knock on wood) I'm doing Atkins, but I am nervous about it. I'm actually been on the low carb friends board and there is much discussion regarding protein and diabetics. It seems research has shown(and Lord knows theres always more research) and also a book by Dr Bernstein, Diabetic Solution, which states fat consumption should be increased and protein decreased. Many diabetics have found significant improvement in their BS's by increasing the fat consumption. But it's such a high amount. Like 70-80% of your diet. I'm am going to buy the book. It's sounds scary and goes against everything we are taught, but then again, so does Atkins. See why I get so confused :dizzy: :?:
I was exercising regularly for most of the summer. Then after vacation it fell off. So hard to make a good habit, so easy to break it. I am planning to get going again. But I'm still in induction and I don't quite know how I feel about exercising yet. Maybe at least start walking again.

Deb, Thanks for the support. This is a tough nut, this diabetes. But I think we can all help each other too. Everyone seems to bring something different.
Maybe together we can find the right formula. Even if the formula is different for each of us.

Hi Pat, Thanks again for getting me out of a rut. I'll try to stay out of it. ;)

Well, I hope everyone has a good day tomorrow. I don't know about all of you, but I am all over these season premiers. Just what I need to be doing, sitting in front of the TV or the PC

Hi, all. Thanks for the book tip, Donna. I'll look for the Diabetes Solution. All the powers that be are always saying do low fat. that's interesting about the Reglan (I'm taking the generic version). I've wanted to stop taking, thinking in part that if I can't eat much then I'll lose weight. How did you wean yourself from it? I know what you mean about tv and the pc. I manage to not turn the tv on until 9 p.m. but I spend too much time on the pc after work (I don't have one of my own so I stay at the office and use the boss's.) Deb, I know what you mean about the classes. When I went back to check out what the nutritionist had given me, it was only a sample menu. I just re-joined the American Diabetes Assn. and got a booklet full of books they offer, including menu cookbooks and carb and fat counters. There's one weight loss book with a funny title I might get. Add it to my collection.
Rosey -- hope you got some sleep. Must have been a big moose.

Hi everybody,
Well, I went to the chiropractor again today and I am feeling 80% better.
Phew! I thought my back my go out for a while. Who's got time for that.

Deb & Pat, I looked into the Diabetic Solution book today at Barnes and Noble and they wanted $27 and change for it. I found it on line for $18 but forgot to check out shipping and handling. I really don't want to spend that much. I already feel like I spent too much money on unsuccessful dieting. I just keep going with Atkins for now and hope I'm not causing liver problems with too much protein.

Hope everyone else is doing well. Amazing Race finale is on, so I'm cutting this short.

Morning :coffee: Well things at work are at full tilt. Man I'm ready for this outage to end and it hasn't even started. And you would know, Ivan is back. If this hasn't been the strangest storm season.
Well as far as being op I've been working really hard. And this weekend I'm getting a book. I saw the Atkins for diabetics at Walmart. Hope they still have it this weekend or it's into Baton Rouge to go to Barnes and Noble.
My little daughter will be coming to spend the weekend so I can catch up on all the doctor news for our coming arrival. Hubby haveing dental work done tomorrow. So my hands will be full for a couple of days. But I like to be busy it keeps me from feeling hungry
Rosey keep up the great work at curves. Before you know it those pesty pounds will be melting away.
Everyone have a great day. :D
