South Beach Diet - Thursday chit chat

View Full Version : Thursday chit chat

Greetings to all beach belles this lovely sunny morning. :goodscale

I lost four pounds over night last night. How about that for wish fulfillment?

I just picked a Rumi card for us all for the day (a deck of cards with quotes on each) and we got 'After despair, many hopes flourish, just as after darkness, Thousands of Suns open and start to shine'.

So that is alright then.

Life here is as normal. My mother just called in distress to say that her legs are leaking.....remind me not to get old. She has had over swollen ankles for a while and it seem the fluid has found a way out through her skin. :p So I shall have to call the district nurse Sally and see if she can pop in....the woman is a total angel. Poor mother meanwhile is distressed and fretting, quite understandably.

Karen phoned in excitement to say that the sculpture gallery wants to exhibit some of her work. This has to be good news, although how the public will react to the rounded bottoms protruding out from roses which she seems to have been focussing on this year.......well it remains to be seen.

onwards and downwards...

Morning Clovey, Congratulations! Your sun certainly did open and start to shine, well done!
I've been up and puttering around since quarter to 5. I have been sleeping lousy these past nights, and after tossing and turning most of last night I just said the heck with it and got up. So I have had my tea and the second load of laundry is in the washer, and I have even washed the kitchen windows! Am I going crazy or what? Maybe it's a side effect of menopause?
Jake fixed the problem with the pool and didn't think it was any big deal. Here I was all worried that we'd have to buy a new pump. So yesterday I spent a rare and relaxing afternoon on my poolchaise in the pool with no little ones around! I have to work on my tan so I don't look like a tourist next week. Luckily, I have olive skin and don't burn.
Kiko - Thank God your test came back all clear!!!
Justjodi - I loved the story about your DS, it reminded me of the first time I shaved under my arms and then sprayed on deodorant! Glad that your back OP again.
Jenne1017 - Congratulations on the loss, too bad about how it came off, but it all counts!
I'm gonna go fix me another cup of tea so I'll check in later. (Hope I can pee it all out before my workout!)

Good morning, Chicks~~

Well, it's the Big Day for dh. He has to be at the hospital by 10:15 this morning and we probably won't be home til about 4:30 or so, depending. I'm taking my Alphasmart to get in some writing, a book, and a ball of yarn and needles to start a knitting project. Socks. What else?

Totally blew it last night on the most luscious frozen concoction to ever grace the state of Georgia...Italian Gelato. Hoo boy. I had the teeniest portion they offered of pineapple basil. I don't even want to think how much sugar was in that little 1/2 cup portion. If I was to get an ice cream maker, I wonder...could I recreate that stuff using Splenda? If I could...ahhhh bliss. :)

Clovey, I wasn't able to access that link to the cottage you're looking at. I'd love to see it, though. Could you resend?

Cottage, glad you got your pool problem cleared up.

Well, guess I'll go make myself a cup of tea, Cottage you made it sound so yummy. I have some Irish blend from Teavana. Since I have most of the morning, I'll get this posted and come back in a bit.

07-01-2004, 08:50 AM
Good wishes for your DH, Mamacita.
My DH just got up! I swear he is attached to my login! I'll get eh morning schedule cranked up and then be back. I've been up since 5, of course, but.....

07-01-2004, 09:08 AM
Oh, Jodi... :lol3: Your poor little boy. Puberty is such an embarrassing time.
Hey, congratulations on staying OP yesterday, girl!! :hat: Have you considered trying for two days in a row? :D

Clovey, your dear Mom. :( I'll be saying prayers for her today. :grouphug:
The paintings sound neat! I'd love to see them.
Hey, I can't see the first house! Is there another link?

Cottage, you've got to get some sleep, you busy girl!!

Mamacita, prayers for your DH today... let us know how things go. :grouphug:

Lisa, welcome! And yes, we were/are all pretty grumpy initially.

Sue, congratulations on the 4 pounds! That's 4 pounds less for your knees to deal with!! :)

Karen, you must be feeling on top of the world. :) Ummm... what the heck is a "laundry fest"!? What... does everyone take their laundry down to the river and wash it by hand or something?

Ruthie, I hope you're starting to heal. This stormy weather is a perfect time for you to stay in and relax. Get someone over to walk the girls for you. :grouphug:

Jess, good luck with the job hunt, and have fun this weekend!

Ummm... Peggy? Where do you live? A BOMB scare?! Tell me it's not Ottawa.

Laurie, I wish you lived nearby, you exercise queen you. I need someone to drag me to the gym. Have a wonderful holiday!!

I had a wonderful time last night at my sister and her partner's place. A bunch of us sat around on their upper deck and drank wine... it was a hoot. Her partner has a little wine cellar in the basement, and he kept bringing out better and better bottles to try. :) I've just taken four Advil.

Good morning chickies please tell me someone has some Advil I have the worst :headache: this morning. We had another couple over last night and we sat out on the deck having a few drinks, of course I had a bottle and then started the second one of wine, then had an Irish cream. :hat: It was fun last night mind you I hurt more just thinking about it today and of course there is not a pill in the house to take away this :censored: headache. Grrrrr. HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL MY CANADIAN SISTERS.
Morning Ruthie how are you feeling are you healing?
Mamacita- My prayers are with DH today. I bet he is more nervous today. Let us know how he makes out.
Cottage- glad the pool is fixed and was nothing serious, I too am working on my tan for my sisters wedding. Mind you I am very fair and burn easily. I do tan but I am ususally the only one who knows it. I can tell when I am naked, cause I can see my tan lines. :lol3:
Clovey- your poor mom that would freak me right out. Nice loss.
Good morning to all you chicks yet to come.
I must go the dam birds are singing and even the sound of the keyboard hurts my head. I think maybe I should go back to bed.

07-01-2004, 09:11 AM
Ellis this is becoming a habit. Us posting at the same time. And we were both drinking last night. How come you don't feel so bad???????

little chick
07-01-2004, 09:13 AM
I guess I should have read you post better. Duh.... I am sitting her drooling at the fact that you have ADVIL.

07-01-2004, 09:28 AM
Darling, you missed the part where I said I just took 4 Advil. Sorry I can't send you some... glad you had fun last night!!

07-01-2004, 09:29 AM
Geez, we posted at the same time again.

07-01-2004, 09:37 AM
Hey! I have tons of Advil! I just need to remember to take them BEFORE I start to hurt a lot! Duh! Pain is a great reminder. Things are very slow to heal, I'm afraid. Getting older sucks! The wrist is much improved although still in the splint most of the time but I'm pretty sure the right arm will need physio.

Ellis and Little Chick, sure you have slight (I hope!) hangovers but you DID have fun. We need to be easy on ourselves sometimes and enjoy this short life!

I'm still smiling over Kiko's test results!

Cottage, a guy named Jake WOULD know how to fix the pool problem. I've never met a Jake who was not pretty smart about stuff like that. It's nice to know your worrying was for nothing. Enjoy the laundry fest! I need to have one too.

Clovey, your Mum's edema problem sounds terrible! It's lucky that she has someone nearby to care for her. Sally sounds like an angel.

Mamacita, it sounds like you are well prepared for your wait at the hospital. Is this an out-patient procedure or will your DH be in overnight? And what the heck is an Alphasmart?

I was out to the garden early this morning to pick lettuce and dill and my annual red and white poppies are in bloom for CANADA DAY! They couldn't have timed it better! The mosquitos were also out in full force. :( Damn things! We'll just get rid of them and then the deer flies will start to be followed by the wasps! It's a good thing I forget about these creatures during the winter or I'd not look forward to summer! I also scared away some cedar waxwings who were eating my strawberries! It doesn't bother me as I can buy berries but can't buy waxwings!

Today the Village will be hopping with celebrations. There are children's activities all day at the Fairgrounds and a fishing derby for the kiddies as well. Little kids are so excited when they catch a tiny sunfish! There is a parade in Newboro tonight that Hersh and I were supposed to march in but I really am too sore to do that. I hate to let down the Red Hat Ladies but don't think it's worth the agony. Hersh is very well-mannered but there is a strain on the arm and wrist when I walk with her. (I learned this from yesterday's visit to the Nursing Home!)

Plans for today? Not much! A luxurious bath, a salmon salad lunch, fajitas for dinner and a bit of Village roaming to check out the happenings!

Have a super day!

07-01-2004, 10:33 AM
Good morning, ladies!
I have to agree that pain SUCKS! I resent it too, because it limits me. I pick up the phone instead of trotting over to someone's desk, I actually asked my daughter to get me a spoon in the kitchen, when we were only one room away!

Clovey is Sally a National Health nurse? I often think that so many people here could stay in their own homes longer if it were just easier to get someone who knows you to drop in. Or is my picture of English life hopelessly contaminated by 1950s mystery novels?

Ruth, I love that sentence - "I can buy berries, but I can't buy waxwings." I just wish our feeders weren't also subsidizing all the squirrels from our house to the next block!

I don't believe this, but I dropped another 2 lbs last night! Here I am, trying not to develop a scale addiction, and the damned thing is jonesing me up one side and down the other! Does anyone else do this, every damned day?

Well, have a meeting to go to, so TTFN

07-01-2004, 10:37 AM
What is a waxwing? I think I might want one.

When I was in Georgia a few years ago I saw fireflies for the first time.....

I have tried to repost the link to the cottage but it doesnt work...I think because there is a fancy search facility on the page. When I go and see it, if I like it I will take a digital photo and post that. The estate agent is desparate for me to see an old coach house in central Frome, but it has communal gardens, and of course that will not do. I said so but she phoned back later to say that she thought I really should see it as the vendors sometimes used to 'tidy up' the garden themselves. Hmmm. Well, I shall go and see it as it is near the station, and it will make her happy I suppose. Communal gardens. I ask you.

07-01-2004, 10:41 AM

Need to work -- will be back later!

07-01-2004, 10:58 AM
Hi, Ruth,
Yes, my Jake is a pretty good handyman, but he learned out of neccessity, we couldn't afford to pay someone every time we had a problem! I saw a tshirt once that said "You don't know Jake" that I want to get for him. His birthday is July 7 while we're at the shore, and I think it'd make a great present for him.

Mamacita - Prayers for your DH's surgery today. I love Gelato! You should try the Rosemary Lemon, yum yum!

Ellis & Little Chick - Don't use up all the Advil! I'll be needing it next week, as I plan on sitting at the wet bar on the wharf drinking wine every night! Ahhh, vacation - - -

Announced to Jake yesterday that vacation officially begins Friday night, so I didn't plan on cooking all weekend, and found out that DD and family are coming Saturday and bringing her inlaws from Texas! So I'd better plan a menu for them.

I just got some lovely blueberries, nice and fat, that I'm going to have with yogurt for a mid-morning snack. Blueberries are my favorite fruit! It's supposed to get pretty hot and humid today, so I'm going to have to figure out what to do with the little ones, I'll have them from 12 to 8pm today. We could go swimming, but I don't like to have them in the sun too long, especially the baby. We'll come up with something fun to do though. I'm sure going to miss those kids next week, but it'll be nice to have a whole week to myself.

See you all later!

07-01-2004, 11:07 AM
Clovey - waxwings are cedar waxwings, lovely slate grey birds that eat mostly fruit. They arrive in your yard in a cloud, eat all the currants, cedar berries, or, as Ruth describes, strawberries, and then depart for another yard.
They have a crest, like a small cardinals crest.
Unless you run a fruit farm, they don't stay long, so every sighting is a treasure.
Speaking of which - we had 3 kinds of woodpeckers at our sunflower feeder last night. I feel so blessed, but quiet.

07-01-2004, 11:24 AM
Calling from the west! Hello!

You all sound like your primed for the 4th July Weekend....except those in Canada.

My corn is doing great....knee high by the 4th of July. Went to a greenhouse yesterday and bought fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. They were soooo good. For those of you that have these in your gardens, I'm jealous.

I'm having lab work done today, just because I want to know how things have changed in the past three months. It's great working in a hospital.
Mamacita, could you come on over to Idaho and draw it for me??????????

07-01-2004, 11:25 AM
what is Canada Day?

07-01-2004, 11:33 AM
Good Morning, everyone...

I have been lurking once in a while, was gone to NYC for over a week, but just wanted to tell all of you how good it is to drop by and see everyone.

Off to work and then I will be out of town for the three day weekend. Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all of you. More later.

07-01-2004, 11:43 AM
Hey! Canada Day is our 4th of July! Confederation made us a country in 1867!

07-01-2004, 11:50 AM
Morning, all! Busy trying to get ready for our vacation...we leave in a couple hours, but wanted to pop in and say hi, see how all were doing.

Congrats, Clovey on the lost weight! :cp: May it never be found again! :D My third weigh in this week(yes, Sue, many of us weigh every's a battle not to do it more than that!) of 280, so I feel I can count it! 46 pounds down! Yippee!

So sorry to hear of your mom's problem, Clovey. My mom has the same. Glad she is taking care of it. It's very scary. Just make sure she keeps it clean so there are no infections.

Hope those hangovers go away, LC and Ellis!

Enjoy the Canada Day and Fourth of July celebrations, stay away from mosquitoes, keep Advil and a bottle of water around, and :crossed: your fingers for me that I can stay OP on my journey there and back to Maine! I'll be back on Monday, so play nice! :D

07-01-2004, 12:04 PM
46 pounds down!?!? Holy crap, Laurie! That's GREAT!!! :hat:
That does it, Ruth! I'm getting back OP!!
Laurie, have a wonderful holiday with your DH. :grouphug:

07-01-2004, 12:14 PM
Hi Everyone!

I've been home so little that I'm behind on reading here, behind on my own e-mail etc... but I think it's better not to be glued to the computer all day when I don't have to be. It's felt so good to be out of the house doing stuff all day long, and I don't get as hungry when I'm out busy. Although for some reason yesterday afternoon I was craving a burger or something. Passed it up. That mad cow disease is enough to make me stop eating beef that I don't know the source of. I'll stick to Neiman Ranch Beef I think. Have any of you ever tried buffalo? We got some buffalo burgers the other week and cooked them on the grill and had them without buns. Delish!

Congrats on your loss Clovey! Yesterday when I weighed myself in the afternoon I was down two pounds but they were back this morning. Gotta love that water weight!

:goodvibes :crossed: :goodvibes For your hubby Mamacita, and for you too. I'm just learning how to knit and making socks is my goal.

I'm so glad to hear that everything came out okay Kiko. :flow2: (looks like a nice warm-fuzzy to me)

Cedar Waxwings are beautiful birds. The tips of their wings look like they've been dipped in red wax. Do a google search for them and check the images return for the search, you should be able to find a picture. They're so elegant and beautiful. I've never seen one "in person" only in pictures (I don't think they visit california).

Welcome SoCalBirdLady! I'm a bird lady myself. I have four birds (2 cats and 3 dogs)...parrot behavior has been a hobby and very strong interest of mine... and I'm leasing a horse this summer. It's been 15 years since I last rode (grew up riding) and I'm having fun being saddle sore ;) Sounds like we have a little bit in common :)

Have fun on your vacation beachgal...

...sorry for not saying hi to everyone individually. Have a great OP day on the beach... I'm getting ready to go and meet with a CPA today about family and money and crap. It's amazing how unfriendly family can be when you're trying to give them something when if you weren't being generous they'd otherwise get nothing *sigh*

I'm also gonna stop and see my Dad and step-mom today. I've been roped into "hostessing" a baby-shower for my step-sister-in-law who is basically only socially cordial to me (I think she dislikes me because of my weight). My step-mom is giving the party (paying, and it's at my Dad's house) but was babbling some nonsense about it not being "proper" for her to give the party. She's invited like 40 people and is expecting like 35 to come. It's all my step-mom's friends and some of the SIL's family and junk (read: I won't know hardly any of them). I can't belive the logic my Mom uses sometimes... these are people that she would have invited to the weding but didn't because the wedding was half way across the country and inviting them would have been just asking for a gift ... and inviting them to a baby shower is what? *shakes head*

My Mom (step) has decided that she wants to use BLACK pages for a memory book that people are supposed to write advice to the new parents in... only the book she had is too small so I made up a lovely scrap book that I now can't finish becuase it's WHITE with WHITE pages and Mom is all hung up on how gel ink looks so "neat" on black paper and the SIL that this is for is all into white and ultra modern so I can't even get away with doing something antique style to use the black pages and I already spent the damn money and did the other thing. So today I have to convince my Mom that the black pages are a bad idea... else I'm stuck having paid for all this stuff.

well... enough from me... Have a GREAT DAY ON THE BEACH!!!!

07-01-2004, 12:15 PM
OK, ellis, I'm on for Phase II and no junk or junque food. Of course, we could always just cancel her membership and spare ourselves the jealousy!

07-01-2004, 12:58 PM
Good Morning Ladies!

Well you guys will not believe this. This morning my dad went out in our back yard and called me to come out there. There in our yard were 2 squash and one eggplant.....all chewed up.:o...Yesterday my dad and I went out to the garden to check on things and picked a few ripe things. Well something had attacked our zucchini plants....and we were missing zucchini. It of our dogs!!!! My dog Murphy our youngest yellow lab.....he's almost a year old....I can't believe he went into our garden and took our VEGGIES!:nono: I guess he'd rather have that then dog food? Once again I'm in my dad's office answering's pretty quiet. I"m going to my little brother's baseball game this evening. He made it to the all-stars! He's a great little pitcher. He's 10 and playing on the 11 yr old team!

Laurie-46lbs! That is WONDERFUL!!:cheer: I hope you have a wonderful time on vacation!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!! It sounds like we're all going to be busy bees this weekend celebrating Canada Day and the 4th of July!!!:balloons:

07-01-2004, 01:04 PM
Jess, our dogs must be related! My Hershey eats green and yellow beans right off the bush in the garden. She also go herself a bad mouth infection from raspberry prickles! We have learned not to pick the lowest berries as they may have dog slobber on them. Too funny!

07-01-2004, 01:11 PM
Ruth, that is too funny! Who would have thought our dogs like fresh veggies!

07-01-2004, 01:11 PM
Our yellow lab/Shepherd mix just gums them, then spits them out. I've told her that I don't mind if she licks plates, but if she takes a fruit she has to eat it.
She doesn't listen.

07-01-2004, 01:14 PM
Sue, our other dog, Yeller, is a yellow lab/shepard mix. He thinks he's human. His only problem is he eats socks....I think I'd rather him eat the veggies and not the socks. We have to hide them...

07-01-2004, 01:24 PM
Lucy eats the crotch out of underwear! Not when you are wearing them....yet!

07-01-2004, 01:30 PM
Oh Ruth...that is just too funny! I actually spit my water out laughing!

07-01-2004, 04:36 PM
Afternoon Beach Goddesses!

Just got home a bit ago from taking DD to preschool and running errands. I am finishing up a late lunch and need to get my butt out for a walk as it is SUNNY AND BEAUTIFUL IN DALLAS!!!!!!!!!! :sunny: (Yeah Barb!!!!)

Ruth You crack me up..... :lol

I have a crapload of stuff to accomplish in the next two hours, so forgive me for not responding individually. I overslept this morning, but DD wanted to come sleep/snuggle with me- that doesn't happen much these days as she is 2 1/2 and Little Miss Independent- so I took advantage of it.

07-01-2004, 04:44 PM
Ellis A laundry fest typically consists of me doing a ton of frigging laundry while cursing under my breath that my husband is apparently blind to the fact that it is piling up in the bedroom. Ain't love grand??

07-01-2004, 05:39 PM
Good afternoon,

day 5 is going great for me. I jumped on the metal monster and found 4 lbs gone. yeah for me!

07-01-2004, 07:04 PM
Lots to catch up on all! Wow. Way too many posts!

I am attending the Mystics (WNBA) game last minute, and am worried about dinner. I've done so well, I don't want to mess things up by eating a hot dog and beer for dinner! Maybe I will go get some nuts before the store closes. I also have a yogurt in the fridge.

I have a friend who's leaving town and is having a party on Sat. She's on SB too, but is going off it for the day. I am debating on what to bring so I can eat [perhaps make my own burgers with the LC ketchup and some sweet potato fries?]. I am going to drink, but not beer. A few Jack and Diet's by the pool should be ok. If I swim, or sweat as the case may be, I can work it all off.

Just got notice from the boss that we get out at 1P tomorrow!!! YIPPEE.

Heading to the game. Nite all!

Mornin' all... I guess it is afternoon already. :dizzy:

The dog stories are so funny. We had a dog that would pick all the strawberries and eat them. I thought that my stawberry patch just wasn't doing much until I caught the little thief. He got cancer a few years later, though, so it was nice that he was able to get some enjoyment out of the yard before we had to put him down.

Today is Canada Day...our son and his girlfriend play in a military band that is on duty today. We are on our way to the legislature in a few minutes to hear the band and participate in the festivities, so this will be short. Our son won't be there (he has been posted out of town for the summer), but we will see his girlfriend while we are there.

We decided to take tomorrow off work, as well, so this is becoming a very long weekend for us. I am trying to get DH to finish up the small things that were left after a reno that we did this weekend. Our son's girlfriend's parents (hope you can follow that) are coming to visit in 2 weeks and the guest bedroom needs to be finished before they arrive.

Hope everyone has a great day... mine has been super so far. Slept in until puupies needed to go out. They waited an extra 1/2 hour this morning. Ran out to Home Depot to buy supplies, then was too tired to do anything so laid down for a nap. Life is great.

Take care everyone.

07-01-2004, 08:29 PM
crotchless under????????????????? really????????????????? That's some dog!

You all have a nice evening.

07-01-2004, 10:49 PM
Peggy Ahhhhh.. nothing like a good nap!

Jenn It is all about planning! That is one thing that I have been much better about since doing SBD vs. WW. If I know that there are not going to be OP options, I either bring my own or eat before. Granted, my weightloss has not been stellar, but I have been much more in control these last 6 weeks.

Mamacita Let us know how things went with your husband. I am thinking of you both!

We leave for NC on Saturday- I am so excited! I must admit that I do not plan to be "anal" about being OP, but plan to walk on the boardwalk every day and journal. I know the alcohol consumption will be more than normal, but feel that I have a good control over food, so plan to not go overboard in that area. I will be pleased with a maintain until the 11th and will go from there.

Yes, we sure do. I have the cat, dog and horse too (though the horse is leased to someone right now) but I do have a special affinity for the birds. I have a Yellow Fronted Amazon, an Umbrella Cockatoo and a Severe Macaw. Recently I joined a local bird club and felt right at home with the other bird nuts. What do you have?
