Since I'm an experimental-type girl, I thought I'd start a thread where we can share our low-carb (and low/no sugar alcohol) finds.

My big find for the weekend was Crystal Lite Sunrise (something like that) it's 0 carb and tastes like Sunny D. So so happy!

Some past finds:
Zcarb bars (very low sugar alcohols)
Mission low carb tortillas
Thin Ice

Please share what you've found!

I'm scared of soy milk... I'm not sure why. I look at it all the time at the store, but I can't bring myself to try it. :?: Is it pretty similar to cow milk?

I'm not sure if you'd consider mine "finds," but here are some low-carb things I like:

* Dannon Carb Control yogurt (Peach is especially tasty.)
* Banderita low-carb tortillas
* Aspen Edge (low-carb beer)

Marie - don't hate me. They're not low carb. It's the damn sugar alcohol thing again. I can't wait till the FDA starts regulating that!

I'm addicted to the Dannon LC yogurt!

There's also Baja Bob's low carb drink mixers:

Margarita (regular)
Margarita (desert lime - my favorite!)
Margarita (strawberry)
Pina Colada
Bloody Mary

I love the Walden Farms brand of dressings.. 0fat 0sugar 0carbs 0cholesterol etc.. it has nothing in it, I'm not sure why it tastes so good
And of course I have to agree with the Soy Slender .. chocolate or vanilla flavors YUM! I use the vanilla in my coffee with a little divinci sf french vanilla syrup and the chocolate for hot cocoa.. I didn't care for the cappacino flavor though

JD - take a chance, I was scared of it too.. go grab some and you'll be surprised!

OOOH OOOH OOHH!!! Walden Farms also makes Chocolate sauce. 0 Carbs (same as the dressings)...and mixed w/water makes GREAT hot cocoa :)
(um. added to whipping cream is ALSO spectacular!!) :D lol

I also like their french salad dressing. Makes eating salad tolerable (seeing how french dressing is the only type I like). lol

It's a bit expensive, though. $16 a bottle?

RobinW

wow Raven thats expensive......I have some "Monin" that I think is international, and Ive seen it on many ozzie sites so it might be easier to get, and less expensive.

go to www.monin.com/us/en/sugarfree or do a google search ......I found lots for sugar free syrups.

Heinz and their 1 carb ketchup... I bought some and it is FABULOUS. I had walden farms but it seemed too thin and sweet to me. .... I am a total ketchup snob and Heinz 1 carb tastes just like the real thing!

Carb options also has
5 carb spaghetti sauce (but I hate LC pasta)
LC alfredo
LC cheese sauce
LC steak sauce
LC teriaki marinade

I have not tried these yet but I plan to.
I also saw some Carb options 4 cheese sauce in with some LC pasta that is kept in the fridge, didn't look too long at it as I'm not really interested in pasta anymore... but just FYI

Oh yeah. I'll have to look up the name of the flatbread I found at walmart. I found it up by the deli. They have 2 types of LC flatbread and the entire thing (it's huge) only has 8 carbs.... My sister and I make pizza out of them which makes for super low carb pizza and we each eat 1/2 of the flatbread. Fills you up and it's soooo yummy. We're also going to make "chips" out of them because I just got a bunch of LC fruit dip and veggie dip and bread dip recipes.

Today, I tried a Quizno's lc flatbread sandwich. Yum! I checked out the website before I went in so I'd know what I was getting. They're a little higher than subway, depending on what you get. I opted for the lowest carb one. Chicken carbonara, 9 grams w/alfredo sauce, 6 grams without.

It was sooooooooooooo good! They even offer lc soy chips, but I didn't try those. 9 grams was enough for me ;)

Star, My sister says that now the pizza place inside Winco sells those LC pizza crusts they use for their LC pizza, pre-packaged and only for like 3 bucks for like 6 or 8 of them. Just ask the pizza people where they keep them in the store, I am gonna get some next time!!

1. Mama Lupe's Tortilla's (better than La Tortilla ones) 3 grams
2. La Tiara Taco Shells (super thin but awesome) 1 gram each

I have more but can't think.......just had my Mama Lupe's Tortilla for lunch with some tuna....yummy.

Total Protein (cornflakes, you know, Total?)

Pros: Very yummy - tastes like frosted flakes and I imagine they're great to cook with (may experiment with that tonight)

Cons: Contains sugar, honey, and sugar alcohols. Also, a full serving contains 100% of the RDA for iron - something we don't need more of.

lady_adnerb
05-18-2004, 06:14 PM
 My DH has been eating the Total I bought for myself. That's ok. It'll prevent me from using it and then I won't be tempted to over-carb myself w/them.

FInd FInd FInd!!

I am a HUGE lover of Broccoli/cheese soup and I found the easy way to make it with this Carb Options double cheddar sauce (2 carbs per 1/4 cup) OOOOO it was soo good I just boiled up the Broccoli and them mashed it up and added the sauce and some parmesean cheese and mixed it all together and it tasted sooooooo great!!

Weird thing I found the cheddar sauce near the spaghetti sauce in my store....hmmmm you think it would be by the cheese or veleeta or something.

I tried out the low carb Special K today. I wanted to compare it to the Total Protein. The Special K is good too! The flakes are thinner and therefore more like normal cornflakes. It's also not as sweet as the Total.

I think I'm going to have to keep a box of each around so I have cornflake variety! ;)

lady_adnerb
06-08-2004, 05:16 PM
Do they both have the same amount of carbs? I think DH ate all the Total Protein that I bought. I forgot I had it.

I found Carb Countdown Yogurt Smoothies tonight at Wal-Mart. I got the peach flavor, and it was quite tasty. Very similar to the Dannon LC yogurt in flavor. I'm still trying to determine if it has 3 or 4 carbs... I don't see sugar alcohols, but it mentions on the bottle that organic acids (1 gram carb) have no effect on blood sugar, and on the front it mentions 3 net carbs. In the nutrition information, it lists 4 total carbs. What is an organic acid??

I'm a returning member here and just found this topic.. As for products?? I just purchased me some low carb breyers ice cream at 4 grams of net carbs per 1/2 cup.. I bought the chocolate and the vanilla.. I also had purchased the low carb chocolate covered fudgicles for the same count for each one...OH MY GOD>> talk about creamy.. Everyone in my house loves ice cream and each have their own preference and the low carb one is all mine mine mine LOL...

StarPrincess
06-16-2004, 12:44 PM
VanIsle - I use a brand called Soy Slender. It's a sugar free soy milk sweetened with splenda and only has 1 gram of carbs per 8 ounces. Regular soy milk is full of sugar.

Welcome Jo-Anne!

This might be old news to you guys but here are some cool things that I found recently:
Hood brand low carb yogurt (3gms carbs, 80 cals, 13 gms protein) and Hood Yogurt smoothies (5gms carbs, 100cals and, 12 gms protein) NUM! They are really good and also help me keep my protein up. I also tried the Z carb bars (at StarPrincesss' suggestion) and they are really good. Another brand I found at the Lo Carb store that doesn't have Maltilol is Brown and Haley bars (the makers of Almond Roca) and they have a lot of fiber, as well.

XOXO

Thanks for the welcome StarPrincess.. :D .. Have any of you tried the Ross' low carb chocolate bars?? They are delicious... I bought me the coconut ones.... Well worth the money spent.. I have a chocolate kick once in a while so this totally satisfies me...

StarPrincess
06-17-2004, 11:50 AM
The only chocolate bar I eat is called ZCarb because it's very low in sugar alcohols. I personally believe that sugar alcohols count as carbs since they're digested and I'm not doing this for my blood sugar (see the FAQ at the top of our little forum for more on sugar alcohols). :)

Ok, guys and gals! I actually got a little emotional over this one yesterday:

I found........... are you ready?..................reduced carb english muffins! One of the very few things that I truly miss. I wanted to cry and do a happy dance all at the same time! They're made by Franz and are 13 grams each. Way too high for induction, but I've only got 10 pounds left to go and I wanted them!

The good - they're very yummy!

The bad - no nooks and crannies! What's an english muffin without nooks and crannies??? These are more like those Australian biscuits.

Jo-Anne
06-18-2004, 10:09 AM
Now you know we need those nooks and crannies to catch that melted hot butter..LOL Maybe we should write them and request nooks and crannies?? I mean everything must just slide off eh???

Be still my beating heart! Starbucks has a low sugar Caffe Vanilla frappuccino bar. If the manufacturer is not lying, it has 20g of Carbs, 9g of fiber and 1g of sugar alcohol, for a total of 12g of Carbs.
I decided to believe the manufacturer on this one, because I gave up frappuccino bars last January when I started Atkins.
While 12g is a lot, it was worth every bite!

Oh, the food adventures I go on for you! All in the name of research, right? ;) Here's 3, that's right, 3 for today:

Doritos Edge
The Scoop: Soy-based version of Doritos. 6 grams of carbs for a 1 ounce bag.
The Verdict: I found these at Subway on day for only $1.00 a bag so I figured I'd give it a try. Almost a week later, I finally did. 3 days after that I finished the bag. They're ok. That's definitely Doritos cheese on the chips, but the chips themselves are a little funky. This may just be my own little bias against soy chips. I could only eat 3 or 4 chips at a time. Still, a decent occasional snack.

Bacardi Low Carb Black Cherry
The Scoop: Brenda, your prayers have been answered! A black cherry flavored malt beverage. It's sweetened with sucralose (Splenda) so the carb count is a true 2.6 per bottle.
The Verdict: Personally, I was disappointed in this one. It seemed too much malt, not enough black cherry. BUT since I'm not accustomed to these kinds of drinks, maybe that's just what they're like. I still think I'll be more than happy to have one on a hot day.

Yoplait Ultra
The Scoop: We knew it was coming! Yoplait now has low carb yogurt. The label is a little confusing since it doesn't list fiber (if there is any). It says 8 grams of carbs and 5 grams of sugar. So, who knows?
The Verdict: Very good! First, I was very happy that it was a full 6 ounces instead of 4. It's thick - like they're normal custard style. And the taste is really good. The only bummer is that there is no real fruit in it (I like the little chunks of fruit). Still, this will be appearing for breakfast on a more regular basis. :D

lady_adnerb
06-23-2004, 02:49 PM
Oh my!! I can't wait to try the Bacardi LC drink!! I'll be keeping an eye open for it ;) I've tried the Kraft Carb Sense French dressing and LOVE it. It might replace the no carb other stuff I was using (Walden Farms). I've also tried the chips ahoy chocolate chip cookies. Leaves a little aftertaste, but DH and I usually share a cookie so we're making the box last. Good for it you're DYING for a cookie.
I've STILL got low carb bread in the freezer I've not tried yet. lol. I love the apple cinnamon or even the chocolate chip muffins mixes by ketogenics

Ok. You had me curious so the other day I went to the grocery store that usually carries my low carb stuff and went into their liquor store. Imagine my surprise when they HAD the LC Bacardi. So of course I had to pick up 2 (I thought DH was going to drink some but he said they're both for me :o ) 6 packs. Went home, popped the top on one....and decided....it DEFINITELY is a drink you want COLD. From the time we went from the store to home it had gotten warm. To me it tasted like fruit punch--NON alcoholic. So for that alone I only drank 1/2 the bottle and stuck it back in the fridge. That stuff could be lethal to my head if I didn't watch out

I'm a big fan of grapefruit juice, and I've found a LC version, thank goodness! It's by Carb Countdown, and it's called Ruby Red Grapefruit Drink (it's in the juice section). It's 3 carbs for 8 oz. -- kind of high, but for a grapefruit juice freak like me, well worth it! :D

lady_adnerb
11-15-2004, 09:35 AM
You're kidding!! I think I'm going to have to remember (or try to) to check that out. I miss drinking grapefruit juice. Used to be that's all I EVER drank (besides soda that is). lol Maybe if I got that again I wouldn't miss milk so much.

I love grapefruit juice, too, and I used to drink it constantly. This obviously isn't as good as the real thing, but it's a nice enough substitute. It at least still has the flavor. (Can you tell I'm desperate for any thing that somewhat resembles grapefruit juice?? )

lady_adnerb

Brenda - On the brownie front, I think Betty Crocker's 'Carb Moniter' brand is way better than Krusteaz. And they're chocolate chip cookie mix is pretty darn good, too!

Recent adventures have included:

Dreamfields pasta - Excellent! But I'm not sure I buy in on their carb count. Also, I only recommend it for side dishes since eating a larger amount will result in gas/bloating

Michael Angelo's 'hot pockets' - I don't remember exactly what they're called but they're just like soft hot pockets. 9 grams each and very yummy! Only take 1.5 minutes to nuke, too. ;)

Red Baron french bread pizza - GROSS!!! I could not stomach the nastiness that was the french bread. I took two bites and threw it out.

Carb Countdown orange drink - Good! Reminds me a lot of Sunny D. I'm sticking with Crystal Light sunrise, though. Less carbs and just as yummy.

Minute Maid Light - MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!! I missed lemonade so much! Super low carb and very good. Quite possibly the single low carb item at McD's. :p

Mission low carb pasta - I tried out their lasagna noodles to make homemade lasagna and the results were really impressive! Not as low carb as dreamfields.

There! That should hold you for a while!

I love the sugar-free DaVinci syrups myself, but found I was spending a small fortune (because of my nasty coffee-drinking habit!).

Try this link. You can buy a GALLON jug of Torani caramel syrup (they offer others), and when you break it down, it's really cheap. It's good too!

I have a little countertop Hamilton Beach steam grill, which I love to use. But I HATE to clean it! You cant get it wet, so you have to kind of balance it on the side of the sink, horrible just horrible.
So I was on Amazon looking at the new George Foreman grill with removable grill plates, you can put them in the dishwasher. But, its only the large size with removables, and I don't have that much need or space.
I did a little more research and found my Hamilton Beach grill, now with removeable plates! The reviews I read say they like it better than the GF, as the grease trap is easier to use. I just got it today and made some hamburger patties. It fits 2 of the large frozen ones with room to spare. When your done, just throw the plates in the dishwasher! Yeah!!!!!

Amazon - Hamilton Beach Grill (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00006IUTH/qid=1105130177/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-1742776-6902555?v=glance&s=kitchen&n=507846)

Plus its on sale for $39! (the GF almost $100 bucks)

Well crap. Wish I'd known about this before I had DH give me a GF for CHristmas. And of course, it's the small size that doesn't have the removable plates. What a pain in the :censored: I made a couple steaks last night and now I'm trying to figure out how to clean it!!

Hamilton Beach makes another, newer great one that I am dying to get. Not only does it have the removable grill plates like barb said, but then the whole thing opens flat and the grill plates turn over to flat plates like an electric griddle/skillet. It's about 60 bucks but that's the same as if you bought a grill and an griddle seperate. At least this way they are all in one machine.

Brenda: You clean it by taking a soft soapy cloth and wiping it off, then take a soft wet one to "rinse" it. You can't submerge it :)

barbmarie
01-07-2005, 06:01 PM
This one is the one that opens flat. There is a little door on the lid, that acts as a leg so you can make one big open flat grill. Bun no griddle plates on this model, this is the smaller one.

For those of you with Food Network and Fit TV channels, their Low Carb cooking shows are great. Lots of easy ideas, do ahead ideas and kid friendly ones.

Right now I am following Blaine's weight loss through low carb. He is down to 262 last I saw and made great chicken nuggest, ground chicken breast, with cream some spices and rolled them in soy flour and ground up pork rinds. Deep fried them and served with cheese sauce, I am going to try them this weekend.
