Support Groups - Where's The Herd????View Full Version : Where's The Herd???? muffie 01-07-2004, 04:32 PM Hey you beautiful bovines, come out come out from where ever you are!! Kiwonk 01-07-2004, 05:22 PM Well, since we last posted, I had an uneventful Thanksgiving, a lovely Christmas at home and the in-laws and a Happy New Year! How about you ;) ? It seems very sad that they lost all these posts and forum data. But really, it's just a bunch of conversations. Well, and all those pictures I posted... And our witty remarks--now that's a real loss. :dizzy: I do feel awfully bad for Suzanne etal -- apparently they lost all the changes they put into forum. Hope everybody remembered their password! Kiwi Lush 01-07-2004, 09:58 PM What worries me most is losing the post about not putting piles of laundry on top of your dryer. What if someone out there is innocently putting towels on top of the dryer then going to bed????Ach I've missed you guys terribly. It has been awful. Now that we're back, let's looose weight. L PainterWoman 01-07-2004, 10:45 PM I lost NO sleep over the clothes-on-the-dryer dilemma. But I do wish that the photos were still around. Hmmm. Do you think I can get away with posting newer, better ones and pretending the old fat self was only a nightmare? ;) It didn't get past 40 degrees here today.... pretty cold for us.... but the country club where I attend business meetings had the ground crew out with an ELECTRIC bulb-hole digger.... The bulbs will be wonderful in aboaut 6 weeks. Spring will come. Woo hoo! Y'all be cheery. NO MAD COWS. SugP 01-08-2004, 02:48 PM We were witty once, we can be witty again.:dizzy: Three cheers for those darling 3FCs for getting things up and running again!!! :cp: :cp: :cp: Just being my boring old self today. Any of you cows know Cantones or Mandarin? I was maybe thinking of *trying* to learn one or the other but I think my brain may not be up to it at my advanced age.:?: Everyone still fat? Are we all going to exercise tomorrow? I have to go downtown tomorrow and lovingly convince our travel agent that we really don't need to spend our life savings on four plane tickets for this summer. And then we're having guests for dinner. Guess I should maybe start cleaning tonight, huh? :o Bagzz 01-08-2004, 02:55 PM yeeees--it is nice to be back in our pen----let me see,it's thirty in florida, forty in texas and minus thirty-six celcius with the windchill factor----LET'S SEE---WHO IS THE COLDESTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT?????? same with kiwi---she can do the farenheit conversion----I speak Cantonese.yeah. We're back! I feel bad for the 3FCs. I lost a database once. That was awful. Bagzz 01-08-2004, 08:47 PM SKSPDOINDPF;LPF;SS;TTTLALOMADF;OA;;P0W;ELMPAG;MLAP OAFML;VAPC;WLM Kiwonk 01-08-2004, 09:02 PM Actually, Bagz, it looks like about the same in F. when it gets that cold. It's -15F here last time I looked, and very windy, so wind chill is at least 36 below, probably lower. I am having trouble typing. Not that our house is real cold, it's just having trouble getting up to a workable temp in all the rooms. I had to drive DD to lessons in OtherTown and man, what a cold drive that was! Gotta go watch Friends, my hands aren't working anyway. Kiwi Lush 01-09-2004, 08:50 AM I would be willing to put my post thought the Chinese translator again, but it would only end in disappointment. Can you believe it won't cut and paste into 3FC????? When Sugar takes Chinese she will tell us what a Chinese keyboard looks like. I have to go teach children again today. What could have posessed me to become a teacher? It is tedious. Why don't people teach their kids how to blow their noses properly so that they don't sniff all day long? I feel bad for the FCs too. I wonder how they pay for this place. Ads,I guess. I have to go get ready. bye Cowpernia 01-09-2004, 09:00 AM DS is learning Japanese. I got the dryer problem solved. After towels had been in there almost three hours and were still damp, I called the builder. He took a grid off the end of the vent ... this is outside ... and it was thick with damp lint gunk. This house was new in August. Would you have guessed that???? He said the grid was to keep animals out but they couldn't get in there anyway because of a flap and he left it off. The thing is plastic and the holes are less than 1/2 inch square while the bars are more than 1/8 inch. Lots of area to catch lint. Why didn't anyone tell me 3FC was back? If I weren't so bored, I wouldn't have checked for myself. Bagzz 01-09-2004, 09:33 AM NOW THAT IS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF DRYER FIRES-----------LINT THAT BUILDS UP==========DUMB DUMB BUILDERS!!!---WE HAD BIRDS BUILDING A NEST IN OUR DRYER VENT,SO WE HAD TO GET NEW CONTRAPTION TO KEEP THEM OUT----YOU COULD HEAR THEM FLAPPING IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM------YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOO---- to lush-----------i do not like teaching either and i just arrived at this realization twenty three years after receiving my Bachelor of Education----i don't even like THINKING about being trapped in a room with all of THEM!!!! Darling_Peaches 01-09-2004, 02:57 PM I do think being TRAPPED in a room with all of THEM would be awful awfyl awful. BUTTT worse would be not being able to go to the bathroom when you wanted. Kiwonk 01-09-2004, 03:16 PM Originally posted by Lush Why don't people teach their kids how to blow their noses properly so that they don't sniff all day long? Hey, if they didn't sniff all that stuff up there, there wouldn't be anything in their brains. :joker: Well, I'm glad the mystery of the dryer has been solved, Peaches. You'd think that after building 6 billion houses, builders would catch on to these little problems, wouldn't you? Our vent hose cleverly just dangles into the basement, thereby contributing to the decor of the whole place. Nobody ever planned this house, for sure. We thought about trying to change it, but it turned out you couldn't actually get outside the house from the dryer without going up, and, well, lint doesn't like to go up, especially when you have to make bends in the hose 2 or 3 places. Oh well, I don't care: the lint helps absorb the water leaking into the basement... :tired: I got a call this afternoon from my friend who moved out to Oregon -- sounds like the NW is really icy mess. Maybe Wabbit is stuck at home? Kiwi Kiwonk 01-09-2004, 05:50 PM HEY!! GET IN HERE AND POST! I didn't come here to talk to myself. One of my favorite doggie friends sent me her picture today. The cold is getting to my brain. Can you tell? Kiwi Kiwonk 01-09-2004, 07:15 PM Strange and beautiful? Bagzz 01-09-2004, 10:57 PM no just strange---------i had tWO margies tongith---i mean tonight Cowpernia 01-09-2004, 11:33 PM I watched part of a video of that show I got stuck on. It was scary and didn't make me happy. My eyes kept blinking and .. and .... never mind. I was no Sugar Plum, that's fer sure. Bagz, you ready for ye old twelfe steppe programe? Kiwonk 01-10-2004, 01:19 AM What show? What video? Are you watching Queer Eye? PainterWoman 01-10-2004, 04:04 AM Dryer lint situation is all normal here... but I didn find two comforters and 3 sets of sheets in DS's closet... We found 3 boxes of stuff for Good will and 4 bags of trash. We're not losing a graduate (in May), we're gaining a closet! Was an extremely virtuous mother... made cookies for him to take back to university, and didn't have any. But I must go to sleep, or they will seduce me! Bagzz 01-10-2004, 09:48 AM YES,what video made you blink like that???Kiwi,i would say Queer Eye has nothing on Queer as Folk!!!! let's hope our peachers has avoided that fer shure!!!!My browser opens to the Netscape Page {BECAUSE when it opened on Explorer PORNO POP UPS KEPT SHOWING UP--- my poor ds9 was screaming 'NAKED LADIES MOM'---GET RID OF THE NAKED LADIES'} Anyway,on Netscape they have all these "titles" of stories about sexual adventures ---dorm room stripping, mexican threesome etc----DON'T YOU THINK THAT IS TACKY FOR A "NEWS" TYPE PAGE THAT SHOULD BE INNOCUOUS??????? MAKES ME MMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDD AS A CANADIAN COW. Cowpernia 01-10-2004, 10:08 AM If Kiwi and Bagz are expecting passing grades in this class, they had better pay attention in class.
Peaches was sent to a press conference The press conference was live on cable TV Peaches was put on a panel for the hour Peaches saw a video of the show and SHE WAS BLINKINGGGGGG
It's my opinion, Bagzorama, that porno popups only show up on a computer that has been used to search out porno. They get a cookie in or something. I know of someone who went to the playboy website to see about submitting a story to them, and she says she's now getting that stuff. Anyhow, I think it' s something you did. Kiwonk 01-10-2004, 10:58 AM Aw, Peachie, you think we have an attention span longer than 3 minutes! You honor us! Did you blink the whole time? Were there a lot of bright lights on you? That would make me blink. Painter, I didn't know it was humanly possible to make cookies without eating them, although my personal target is usually the dough. Those weird guys are actually natives in Papua, New Guinea wearing some traditional garb that includes helmets cast in mud or something. Looks like the set of a bad sci fi TV show, but they're real! Some twerp called an hour ago for a bankcard company and I can't sleep any more. I really wanted to. So now you'll have to entertain me. That's very disturbing about the home-pages, Bagz, but Peaches is right about the cookies. You can wipe out cookies and temporary internet files if you want and start fresh, it might help. Or you could change the home page to something much less questionable. You know, like us, for instance  Kiwi PainterWoman 01-10-2004, 06:47 PM Yeah... the pop-ups come if you leave your name most anywhere... though spammers are getting cagier about just "inventing" names and seeing if they work. My son did something via google and Norton that seems to have cut down on ALL spam and definitely the porno ones.... I wish (that like fiction) there were romance/erotica that catered to straight women.... :sssh: I could go for that... but the graphic porn ads with larger-than-is-credible body parts just look like textbooks for ER nurses -- or circus performers. Actually, I have larger than credible body parts... but it's hips, thighs and chin(s). Cowpernia 01-10-2004, 08:45 PM I are her to entertain you Kiwinie but you is not online. I saw that new movie today with jack nicholson and diane keaton. Anyone else seen it? I thought it was a little story drawn way way out long. And also made no sense. She gave up Keanu Reeves, a doctor, young, ethical, faithful for Jack Nicholson who had never been faithful and never been with a woman over 30. Nope. Kiwonk 01-10-2004, 09:54 PM Originally posted by Cowpernia I are her to entertain you Kiwinie but you is not online. Fer sher that makes no sense -- what nitwit would give up Keanu Reeves for Jack Nicholson? Oh yeah. Diane Keaton. She is kindof a nitwit. I took a nap. Now I'm back. Kiwi SugP 01-11-2004, 01:35 PM I saw on TV that Jack 'n' Diane were in luuuuuuuuuuuuv. Isn't that sappy? Like they never noticed each other before in the 100 years they've been making movies. Pfffffft! Kiwonk 01-11-2004, 03:54 PM See? She's dopey. He's just getting what he can, she's dopey. Last night it was -22F degrees around here--that's before you add in the windchill. This had better not keep up much longer or our oil bill is going to kill us. I wish they'd put back the new features here in 3FC; I liked them. You could start a Quick Reply and switch to Advanced without losing your message. Kiwi PainterWoman 01-11-2004, 05:31 PM And DK looked ghastly on Leno before Christmas. Who told her that 40's retro, in GRAY - no less, would look good on late night TV? It is possible to bake cookies without eating them. It is not possible to store them (even out of sight) without nibbling. Grr. Please imagine our weather... 60 degrees and sunny... I need to go cut back the now-frozen perennials. Toasty cozy wishes to all of you. My DH is having to re-install windows because his treat-to-himself game ate up the directory. Poor baby. I'm nervous about going to console him. I'd be royally PO'd. Wabby 01-12-2004, 01:56 PM I'm all thawed out now. We had a nasty ice storm. It wasn't as cold here as at Bagzie's house, but everything had a 2 inch coating of ice on it. We had to close the business for 3 days. No one could get to work. Even the Portland airport closed for 2 days. We were trapped in our house with 2 grown children. Oh the horror. My dryer top is clean. Kiwonk 01-12-2004, 04:41 PM ..We had a nasty ice storm...everything had a 2 inch coating of ice on it...We were trapped in our house with 2 grown children. Oh the horror. Sounds like a Hitchcock classic. I can hear the scary music now, see the sidelong glances. Who will snap first? If the food runs out, who's the first to go? Apparently I've been watching too many movies. I did watch a cool one this morning, instead of doing anything productive :cp: -- Mirage with Gregory Peck. It would have been better if it had been made by Hitchcock, but it was fun to watch. Peck loses his memory and someone's trying to kill him. Black and white. Things are much classier in black and white, you know. Diane Keaton should stick to black and white. Gotta go pick up my gigantic order of Barnes and Noble books at the post office. I ordered 8 books for about $50, only one of them at regular price (I'm giving DD a college guide for her birthday; is that mean?) And unpack my new set of glasses, which just came today. Hooray the American Consumer... :cb: Kiwi PainterWoman 01-12-2004, 06:56 PM I kept giving my kids college guides and they didn't act appreciative... But just last week my daughter was kicking herself because she hadn't realized how pretty Oregon was when I took her to Lewis and Clark, Reed and U. of Washington. Granted, she ended up at Mt. Holyoke which was just as pretty, but she finally understands what we West-Coasters loved about it. Likewise, son doesn't admit to wanting much help... but he looked over at me a week or so ago and said, "Bet you're disappointed that I'm such a slacker." Didn't know what to say really.... Slacker... yeah, kinda... but disappointed in my kids just isn't part of the picture anymore. They are who they are and THEY get to live with the consequences.... (He's not "slacking" so much now... astrophysics AND working two pt jobs. Dryer top is clear, but closet/clothes hamper is FULL of dirty clothes.... And there are scummy dishes waiting for me when I get home from work. I am a domestic non-goddess... or better, a non-domestic Goddess. Kiwonk 01-12-2004, 10:10 PM You should see my kitchen  -- I'm avoiding mass quantities of cleanup. I managed to make a nice mess with dinner, plus I want to wash about 18 of the new glasses so I can put them in the cupboard. Think I'll just stay online instead. Can't see the mess from here. Kiwi Cowpernia 01-12-2004, 11:27 PM I need to unload. OK? You know my mom, the paranoid schizophrenic who told me, when I was a child, that she didn't want me? The one who, when I went to college and called home, said "What do you want? This is costing money?" Etc. That one? Now, she's in a convalescent center and has been calling me. She wants me to come get her and take her shopping. My cousin, the saint, has been doing this, apparently, as I am such a bad daughter. Today, I called and asked for her nurse. She sounds gruff. Then, she finds out who I am, and she sounds sweeeeet. She says my mother misses me. She says she talks about me all the time. I say I don't want to take her shopping because she'll run away or tell me she's coming to live with me. The lying b**** says, "No, she's changed. I've been her nurse for five years." I say, "I was told within the year that she assaulted another patient there." She says, "That's not true." Well, IT IS! A man called me twice about it. They took her to have her scrapes and abrasions treated from this affray and then changed her medication. I am sick of being the bad daughter in everyone's eyes. I am sick of her calling me. At what point is it ok to distance oneself from ones parent? And why must the entire world be unable to see another side to this crap? Bagzz 01-13-2004, 11:05 AM there is no way you should have to give in to this if you are not interested Peachers!!! NO WAY!!!! don't let those bats guilt you into anything that will disturb your own peace of mind-------------it is unfortunate for mother but she has lived like this all her life and i am sure she will carry on just fine without your shopping trip-----it's too bad they are not taking your side of the story into consideration but TOO BAD FOR THEM-------------they are the least of your concern----your concern is YOU and your son and YOUR mental health and NO ONE should disturb this--------------i repeat YOU and YOUR SON are the important players at this time ---------------if you feel like devoting some time to mother at another time, fine, but go with your gut right now-------------------------THAT IS MY LARGE OPINION AND I STAND BY IT---------------------- now i will let the other cows hold forth Wabby 01-13-2004, 03:26 PM Dearest darlingest Peaches - this is my advice to you. Take care of you and the one person you are responsible for at this point in your life, DS. Read a few books about the narcisistic personality and throw in a few on schizophrenia and I think you will be able to throw off the guilt and realize that you have no obligation to your mother at this point. Of course, this is advice from a person who has not spoken to her dear Daddy since last Mother's day. Occasionally I feel guilt, but not enough to make me want to talk to him. My parents sent me a check at Christmas for $300 in a Christmas card. No note. Then yesterday I got an envelope in the mail with a check for $700 and note that said "Wabby, enclosed is balance of X-mas gift. Dad" What????!!!! It made me feel like I was a bill they have to pay. I haven't cashed them, or sent them back or even called to say thank you. I'm trying to decide what to do about them. I would rather my Dad would call me and say he was sorry. I'd trade the money for that. Sorry about the tirade about my parental problems. Anyhoo, Peach, in my opinion, for what it's worth, you're all paid up on your daughterly obligations. Kiwonk 01-13-2004, 05:05 PM Perzactly, Peachie, what they said. Trust your instincts. You know what's going on, the nurse seems to have her own agenda. If you ever decide to take her out, bring a leash. Funny, I've been mulling ex-family responsibilities today too. My late dad's second family who I never see (but stupidly continue to send Christmas presents to) may have to be dealt with again this week. DH talked to his friend, my BIL, and he told DH about a cocktail party in honor of his father's 70th, who is someone we like very much (this would be my half-sister's father-in-law). Not sure if this was an invitation, or where the shindig is being held, but if it's at my sister's house, I really don't want to waste my psychic energy going to another family event there, only to have everyone be all buddy-buddy and we-should-get-together and then have them snub us again for another year or two. I'm sure we wouldn't have heard about this if DH hadn't called BIL, so why should we feel really invited anyway? On the other hand if it's at the FIL's house, I would happily show up -- it's 10 miles away, and we'd be "on our own turf" as opposed to driving 3 hours each way for the priviledge of being set up for future disappointment again. I'm such a sucker, I just know I would end up inviting them to a birthday party for DH (next week) or DD (next month), and getting all upset because they promise to be there and don't show up. Or whatever. It always happens. Wow. No wonder we are all fat. The thing that really rankles is that all these half-siblings have kids around DD's age -- I know they would like to spend time together and they should, but there is just zero relationship to build on with my half-sibs. Wabbit, keep the money. It's his guilt talking; it may be all he has to offer. If I were you I would write a formal little note of thanks ending with hope to hear from you soon, but then you can see what a loser I am with family relationships, so don't listen to me. Kiwi Wabby 01-13-2004, 08:01 PM Kiwi, you are not a loser with family relationships - look how everyone in this family of cows loves you. :goodvibesDH has a half sister that we sporadically see. I'm talking we can go for 5 years without seeing her, and I know she probably feels left out of the family, but the truth is that the rest of the siblings are not really all that close. DH has a brother who lives in Utah that we haven't seen since DH's mother's funeral which was 20 years ago. He has a brother that lives within 3 miles of our house, which we only see once a year at Christmas. I see my sisters at least 2 or 3 times a month. It's so strange why some relationships are strong and others don't seem to take. I'm closer to my ex sister in law than my present sister in law. I don't know why, I just am. Probably because we are a mutual fan club. I'm going to think on this family relationship thing. Hmmm. :chin: Cowpernia 01-13-2004, 08:58 PM Where are the normal cows? I relate Kiwi. My cousin, Eeyore, was so glad when I moved here. "I don't have many friends," she said. "You and me can do stuff together." Something like that. So, I asked her to come to town and have lunch with me about five times and she said "no" because she had to do something with someone else. So I gave up. Now, he hauls my mom around and doesn't speak to me. I, too, am snubbed. Kiwonk 01-13-2004, 09:41 PM Guess what??? I'm a paying member of 3FC forums!!! Kiwonk 01-14-2004, 10:36 AM Whell, golly gee, bovinesses, ah didn't know ah was causing all kina trouble! School got cancelled today due to the cold -- but not before DH took DD to school for 7am jazz band practice, and I had to go pick her up because he had to get to work. I was soooooooo looking forward to sleeping all morning. Since when do they cancel school for cold weather? I swear I don't think they've ever done that before here. It was -26F on the car thermometer while I was driving into town. Plus a hellacious wind. Our poor furnace can't keep up and it's cold in here. Boohoo. Poor me. Kiwi Kiwonk 01-14-2004, 10:39 AM The weather channel online says we should expect a high of -12F and a low of -23, with wind chills as low as -50. I think I'm going back to bed. Wabby 01-14-2004, 01:30 PM Brrrrrrr. You poor northerners. Everythings all melted off here and we're back to normal. I'm thinking warm thoughts of you all. Way to go on the beach body workout, Kiwi! I'm impressed! Did it warm you up any? My friend called and asked if I wanted to start going to Weight Watchers again. I really don't. Maybe next week. When are we getting motivated around here? Sugar, do you really love your eliptical trainer? Our treadmill has quit on us, and I'm thinking of replacing it with an eliptical. What are your thoughts on this? I'm just full of questions today. Bagzz 01-14-2004, 02:07 PM my sister has an elliptical and it cost FORTY SIX HUNDRED dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! helllloooooooooooooooooooooo?????????????????????? ???? there must be cheaper ones!! anyway---she lOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs it better than the dreadmill----- i have been dreadmilling lately------in a desultory fashion-------------I LOVE THAT WORD HELLACIOUS KIWONK!!!----SCHOOL WAS ON HERE IN ANTARCTICA THO=========HALF THE KIDS DIDN'T SHOW UP----BUT MINE DID!!!! Kiwonk 01-14-2004, 04:41 PM OOO, desultory, nice word, Bagz. I feel like doing everything in a desultory fashion today. I took a way too long nap and boy do I feel sluggish. At least I was warm. Wabbit, you wore out the treadmill? ;) That's impressive! I don't think I have another workout tape in me today. Maybe I'll do 15 minutes of stairs -- the real kind! Think I can do it for 15 minutes? :tread: Somebody give me an idea for dinner. I was going to do grocery shopping tonight, but DD doesn't have dance class, so I don't have to go out (and far be it from me to go out when I don't have to), so I don't have salad stuff, and everything that looks like food is frozen. Omygod, what are these smilies? They're hilarious! Kiwi Wabby 01-14-2004, 07:52 PM I confess, Kiwi. It weren't me. DD wore out the treadmill. I do better walking outside. Or at least I did do better outside. Haven't done any walking lately, except the occasional Leslie Sansone video tape. I'm burning a walk music tape from the library. I'm hoping it will inspire me to move my body. I'm thinking of making a chicken pot pie w/ left over baked chicken from yesteday. Can I get away w/ chicken 2 days in a row? It's either that or somebody can take me out. Anybody have Applebee's restaurants in their area? Ever have an Applebee's Blondie w/ maple sauce and ice cream? I shared on w/ my sis last weekend. It was wonderful. Geez. No wonder I'm tubby. Lohani 01-14-2004, 09:34 PM Thoughts on recent topics: 1. The best food at Applebees is boneless buffalo wings...smothered in Blue Cheese dressing. Yum. 2. As you will remember, I have an independent third party who will verify a murder attempt upon my little self by a family member. I think that says it all. 3. Peaches, the woman who works at the home is not your mother's friend. She's an employee of the home, I'll bet that she doesn't give a rat's patoot about anything but lightening her own workload. AND it probably comes as no surprise to her that your mother is difficult in the extreme, otherwise why would she have lied about the violent episodes? Your well-being and peace of mind are just as important as your mother wanting to go shopping. I could see getting a temporary pang of guilt if they were asking you to take her to a doctor, but you should feel guilty about SHOPPING????????? I thought that is why G*d put snooty cousins on this earth, to feel superior to us by doing the things we don't want to do. Like everyone else, your mom is reaping what she sowed. Who are you to cheat her out of this valuable lesson on cause and effect? 4. I think you should go to the butcher shop. It is Wednesday and they have chicken Tortellini soup...$4.50 a quart. They have bread from the bakery.....ahhhhh. Perfect dinner. 5. It is cold here, too. This is supposed to be a temperate climate. I object to extremes of temperature. The upside is that we probably won't have school tomorrow since we're supposed to get over an inch of snow....an amount that flumoxes NewJerseyans. 6. I have to go shift wash. bye Bagzz 01-14-2004, 11:58 PM an INCH of snow??????????????????????????? kiwonkers-----------------we have a FOOT of snow and they don't cancel school. This is unfair treatment.I want temperance.I am joining the Ladies Temperance Union.Right now. No,after fridee's margies.Wabby, you are not tubby----------------LUSHIE----GREAT ADVICE AS PER USUAL.WHY DID YOU TAKE ANOTHER JOB AND LEAVE US ALL HANGING???? I DISAPPROVE {good practice for the temperance league} Kiwonk 01-15-2004, 03:25 AM Ah, disapproval. Keep up the good work(s), Bagz. I like the idea of engaging in temperance. Publicly. Loudly. Although, not constantly. I mean, there may be times when a good belt is the only solution to a thorny problem. Like a cocktail party with relatives, for instance. Another advantage of suddenly giving up drinking is that people will start to whisper about whether you might be pregnant. Well, I guess calling that an advantage might be stretching things a mite. :chin: Apparently I need some sleep. g'night Kiwi Lohani 01-15-2004, 08:32 AM Kiwi, I hate to break this to you, but no one thinks we're pregnant anymore. Wabby 01-15-2004, 02:31 PM I like the cause and effect thing. Lush has such good advice. Give me some advice, Lush. Bagzie, I was talking about the cheap eliptical trainers that they have here for under $400. For the kind of money your sis spent, I'd expect it to do all the work. I don't want to join any temperance movements. I need a drink. Now. Kiwonk 01-15-2004, 03:02 PM Kiwi, I hate to break this to you, but no one thinks we're pregnant anymore. Hah, speak for yourself, I'm still a youthful 29. Everyone thinks I'm pregnant! Wait a minute, that's not good either... Would you believe they cancelled school again today? Too cold for the little weenies apparently. I'm speaking of small children, of course, not what you were thinking. DH and I were trying to remember if they had ever closed for cold weather before, and we don't think so. Our town is known for never having snow days; we can plow through anything. Apparently we've changed. My back hurts. I made DD empty the d/w and she broke a glass already  It never pays to get help, does it? Kiwi PainterWoman 01-15-2004, 03:12 PM Cowp: Wabby's right... read about narcicissm and borderline personality disorders.... the nurses et al get PAID to make sure your Mom is cared for. Sorry if little weenies are freezing up north. I think they're drying up in Texas, tho' we're (finally) due for a little rain this week & weekend. I don't want to cook. I makes me start my food obsessions. I don't want to do laundry... there must be 6 loads to do. I want to not do anything at all... play computer games, read and nap. Hmmm. I have the day off... actually there's no reason I couldn't just do that... especially once I get to the market and post office to mail tax check. Thanks for the web address to get NO ads.... Not a petty problem like others of you. I have a wonderful steel steamer that came with a set of cookware (cookwear, Sugar) and fits inside a pot. The pot's lid fits the steamer. Welllll yesterday the lid was busy so I used a smaller lid that fit inside it and NOWOWOWOWOWWO the lid is stuck in there so tight that it's waterproof. I LOVE MY STEAMER... There are potatoes stuck between the steamer and the lid. DS and I tried to get off while hot, cold and with 3-in-1 oil. Now, it's in the freezer waiting for a miracle. Cowpernia 01-15-2004, 03:26 PM Painty's post didn't 'pear til Peaches prissily 'parted. Painty have a cup of tea. Snuggle under a blankey in your favorite chair. Fall asleep. You are not the energizer painty Kiwonk 01-15-2004, 04:12 PM Wow, that's impressive, Peachie. You tried ice cubes on top and boiling water on the bottom? Is there any liquid in there? Maybe you could boil it until it exploded. Okay, maybe that's not such a great idea... Just brainstorming. You can't force one side of the lid downward so it tilts? k. Cowpernia 01-15-2004, 04:15 PM I am impressed back at 'ya. I saw a post from Kiwi and I says to myself, "Well, here comes a smart alecky answer." Now I am ashamed. The bottom is a steamer. It has holes in it. The liquid is gone. Potatoes remain. Can't force it anywhere. Cowpernia 01-15-2004, 04:25 PM Remember those computer pets? Kitties, doggies, sheep? I have a pet box of cereal. Wabby 01-15-2004, 04:50 PM Howza 'bout poking a couple of wire clothes hangers through the holes in the steamer from the bottom and pushing the bottom side of the lid? I love my pan w/ the steamer basket too. You're right. This is a real problem. Painty, before you nap at least put in one load of clothes. It's not so bad once you start and you'll be glad tomorrow when you have to work and your laundry is piled up. Besides, the sound of the washer is good background noise for napping. I want to go home and wash clothes. A nap would be nice too. I'm lifting 10 pound dumbells now. Pretty good for a weakling. I'm starting to feel muscles in my arms. You all need to go check out this - www.agelesstraining.com Apparently we have until 72 to get this right. Lohani 01-15-2004, 10:53 PM Wabby, I have a while to go. But not much...I'm turning 50 in June...do you believe it???? I could use a fitness program. I'm finished with Bulges. It got boring. I would fill the tub with water and submerge the whole thing. Maybe it will float out. I like the sound of the dryer for napping, too. SugP 01-16-2004, 06:29 AM Where have I been? Beat's me. But I'm here now with advice for everyone. First things first. I have no idea how to get that lid unstuck. I've done things like that many times. Usually hot/cold water ice cubes worked, but we're talking old potatoes here. I'll have to think about this for a bit. Wabs, our elliptical was under $400. We had a REALLY cheap one first, the kind where the wheel is driven by a nylon belt, and that broke really fast. This one is a bit better and works just fine for our purposes. I've never really used a treadmill so I can't compare it. You can watch tv when you're on the elliptical but it'd be too bumpy to read. They say the arm movement exercises your abs and entire upper body so that's an added bonus. Peachy! You need a giant group hug.:grouphug: Everyone's advice has been impeccable. I personally think going shopping with your mom would do both of you more harm than good and I don't think you have an obligation to do it if it makes you feel at all uncomfortable. I've been feeling entirely too hormonal to even think about exercising plus the lady who thinks she a dentist has been fiddling around with my teeth and making them hurt. She's nice though. PainterWoman 01-16-2004, 11:11 AM Here's what the Home and Garden e-mail subscription led off with this morning: It takes patience to appreciate domestic bliss; volatile spirits prefer unhappiness. Well, apparently I'm not patient OR lethargic. Still trying to decide if that's a good thing. Thanks for the encouragements. Read most of DaVinci Code, and talked to a window replacement guy. For a mere $32,000.00 we could replace all the windows in top form. That's 3x what my parents paid for there whole @#$%^ing house. Jeez. Will probably go with 2nd class windows AND only replace the ones on the West side of the house that have "popped" and begun collecting moisture between the panes. Re potato pan/steamer... somehow there's vapor lock there and it's sucking the lid in tight. I am a faithful believer in soaking... surely water could sneak it's way between lid and pan bottom and eventually (before Easter) float the lid away...? Good luck. Off to window sales guy #2 :s: Wabby 01-16-2004, 02:28 PM Painty, windows R us, you know. Are you replacing existing windows w/ wood, vinyl, or woodclad fiberglass? Get a bunch of estimates, because there are lots of companies that charge a fortune for essentially the same windows as half the cost. You should expect a lifetime warranty on windows. Do not go to someplace like Sears for windows. Choose a reputable company with an actual business address, not someone who advertises w/ a phone number only. Ask about the ease of glass replacement. Some windows like Pozzi windows have to have the entire sash replaced if a window gets broken. Not good. This is a subject that I have good advice for, even if you didn't ask for it. Sugar, thanks for the eliptical advice. The ones I've looked at are in the $400 range. Do you actually use yours or is it a clothes hanger? I've never been able to read on a treadmill anyway, so that's no problem. Bagzie, if I'm picturing the pot problem correctly - the lid is stuck in the steamer basket portion of the pot. I have one that is like a double boiler, except that the inner pot has holes in it so that the steam can go in it. Am I right about this scenario, Peaches? Otherwise, nevermind the last advice. We have basements here. They always leak. Our's was always dry until we had an earthquake about 10 years ago, and it seems to have stirred up an underground spring. We had to spend big $$$'s to have a drain and sump pump system installed. The pump runs every 15 seconds in the rainy season, which makes my electric bill $200 for most of the year and that doesn't include heat because our furnace is gas. No basements in FL. Florridder ppl don't even bury ppl underground, do they? I just finished reading The Secret Life of Bees and also The Master Butcher's Singing Club, both excellent. Now I'm on to Shutter Island, by the guy who wrote Mystic River(also good book) and In Her Shoes by the same woman who wrote Good in Bed. I'm on the library list for Amateur Marriage by Ann Tyler, who I love. I love to read. I should have been a librarian. Kiwonk 01-16-2004, 02:51 PM Can't be vapor lock -- the bottom part's got holes in it! Too bad it's not microwaveable -- you could put the whole thing in there for an hour and when the potatoes blew up, it would come apart... What's a slenderina? That sounds like the perfect tool. I want one, whatever it is. Still, have you tried putting water in your pot and setting the thing back into the pot and letting it simmer, then dumping icecubes on the top? Yeah, I know, you said you'd tried something like that, but I didn't know if you'd simmered it. If you ever get the lid off, don't eat the potatoes. :p Good lord, $32000 just for windows? I was daydreaming about getting our house renovated (probably just a permanent daydream), and I was thinking we might be able to replace our crappy cheap leaky windows as well. haha. I'm gonna live in this piece of :censored: dump till I die. Which should be just about 20 years after I finally get buff, considering my family's longevity. I'm very pleased to know that I have 24 years to finish this 90 day Beach Body tape, especially since I've onlynnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn (The cat is walking across my keyboard. She's a pushy little thing.) managed to do one workout this week. Would you believe school is closed for another day? And I suppose Monday is a holiday, isn't it? Marks are closing soon, and the variety show is coming up, these poor kids are going to be scrambling to get their things done. It's not fair to them to close schools for such a stupid reason. Everyone in Maine knows that winters are cold, they don't need to be shut inside permanently until spring for gods sake. Sugar, you're cute when you're loopy. Good luck with the crocheting. Maybe you could use a slenderina. Ta Kiwi Kiwonk 01-16-2004, 03:00 PM Wow, Wabbit, you must really read fast! Do you get to read at work? I am a deadly slow reader -- I'm still reading the collection of Christmas stories I got from the library and have renewed once already. Of course I'm also reading the latest Harry Potter at the same time, so that divides my reading time. But I'm really slow. You should get together with my friend that moved out there--she's a voracious reader too. Kiwi Wabby 01-16-2004, 04:58 PM Yup. I read at work. Only thing that keeps me from going insane. Hey, Seattle Garden Show is first week of February. Anyone interested? I found an online 2 for one train fare coupon. You just have to get to Portland first. Kiwonk 01-16-2004, 05:39 PM Gee, Portland's only a few hour's drive from here. Oh. That Portland. PainterWoman 01-17-2004, 12:55 AM Don't know where my post just went. Grrrrrrrrr. Wabby... thank you for window advice. Can I invite all the bidders/contractors over at the same time so I don't have to invest 10-15 hours watching them count windows and listening to their pitches? I suppose 10 hours time on an expensive decision might be worth it... but there's other stuff I'd rather do with that kind of time. Reading is good. Had a buying binge financed by DH. Just finished DaVinci Code... Probably the next to the last person on the planet to read it... who IS going to read it anyway. More exciting than I expected. Will start either "East" or "Scipio's Dream" next.... or knitting. Longevity being what it is in my family, I'll NEVER be buff. but we might move. I wish I had a cat still. And a garden show, for that matter. Just chores. Drat. Grumpy. Better get the knitting needles, I feel the need for a stiff drink coming on. Cherry Cow 01-17-2004, 01:45 AM Peaches, did you solve your steamer problem? I'm stumped. Painty, I haven't read The DaVinci Code yet. Wabby, I haven't read any of the books on your list. It'll be a couple of years before I can get to them, unless I decide to buy them. I'm just now reading "The Corrections," which I really like. It's quite sick and disturbing. Hi Kiwi, SugarP, Lush, and Bagzz! I've been incommunicado while I take all kinds of tests. I tested out of science last week and I took the GRE this week. So now I have to write an essay about why I want to go to library school. It was exam week for DS14 this week. I think he did okay. I'm still fat. I've been studying. At least I'm maintaining in the 170s. Bagzz 01-17-2004, 09:15 AM WOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW----I GOT THE NEW ANN MARIE MacDonald book for christmas----i think "as the crow flies"---did anyone read her book "fall on your knees" that was deadly{or did we already discuss this??} i really feel like my mind is not working well----they say it is perimenopause---but it feels like alzheimers---------KIWI!!!---WHEN MY gay guy friend who paints my house {inside and out} was trying to reach behind the radiator to peel off some old wallpaper, his hands were too big so he yelled to me "Mari!!! bring your slenderinas over here and reach down and pull off that paper" ever since then i have called my dainty hands "slenderinas"--------HOW ever we could call ourselves that for when we get BUFF or Biffed ---------------hey,the new kitty's name is Boffo-------won't that be just Boffo when all the Slenderina Cows are Buff!!!{and i had my margies LAST night}-----gotta go ds9 is goalie for the hockey game today and he is beside himself with excitement~!!! so is dh!!! I have the video camera primed!!!! Cowpernia 01-17-2004, 09:34 AM I have a friend who knows everything. She took the pot home and now the lid is off. I don't know how she did it. DS took the message. I am depressed. I would rather be loopy. I will talk about my car. Herbie gave me this car .. 1997 La Sabre and I love it. There has never been light from the dome light though. You need a flash light. This morning I had to drive DS to the next town to go spellunking with scouts and on the way back, the light (plus two on the floor I've never seen) came on when I used the gas pedal. Off the gas, off the light. Push the gas, on the light. I cannot stand this. I have one more complaint about yesterday. I have been active on a fiction writing workshop site. You must critique other peoples stories there and I was about to do one for a guy (I had it printed off) when it didn't take sense. It contradicted itself. I was at work and read that part to my friend who knows everything and she said it sounded really familiar, that story. So I googled a line out of it and found a lot of it had been copied from the New Yorker. The original was online. I told a group of people there about this (which seems natural to me to discuss what goes on there) and told the SYSOP. The SYSOP got irritated because he didn't have time to handle it (delete it) before people started email him asking how he could put up with such things. Bye. Painty, did you find that there were a lot of factual errors in The DaVinci Code? :write: I just read something about it; haven't read the book yet. Peaches, that car thing you have going on, could be a real problem. Even DH says so -- I described it to him and he said "yeah, I'd be concerned" He says you should search the internet and see if it's a common problem. :drill: Kiwi Kiwonk 01-17-2004, 04:25 PM There was a fire in downtown Bangor the yesterday; the Masonic lodge was gutted. Putting out the fire resulted in this big ice cake below. They had to remove pieces of the remains because they were afraid it would collapsed under the weight of all that ice. This was in the NYTimes with this caption: Ice and flames enveloped a historic building Friday in Bangor, Me. Later, part of the building, the site of a Masonic lodge, had to be torn down. My library school alma mater no longer exists! ;) I didn't notice factual errors in DaVinci Code.... but then I'm very unsure what the facts were supposed to be, and what the fiction was supposed to be. A priest friend of mine thought the underlying premise (the early church "fathers" suppressed any mention of strong women and their value") is completely plausible. And certainly there are double and triple crosses that happen whenever there is enough power or enough money involved. Baggz: congrats to goalie boy. When I first read your post, I thought he was in fishnet... had gotten confused with gay handiman and slenderinas. Glad that I got those sorted out. You know, like me. Just ask DH; he'll tell you I'm a know-it-all  Painty, I think the inaccuracies were more in the art descriptions themselves than in the general happenings of the time. Two that I remember were that The Last Supper was not a fresco, and Mona Lisa was painted on wood, not board (whatever difference that makes). That kind of thing. Bagz, that building was on Main Street downtown; I'm not sure whether it's what you're thinking of or not. Not quite on the waterfront, but possibly facing it. It was built in the 1860s. They lost Masonic costumes and lodge records; all kinds of irreplaceable stuff.here's an article about the building (http://www.bangornews.com/editorialnews/articles/415306_011704masoniclodgehadri_nhauger.cfm) They lost their original charter document, over 200 years old. It was originally chartered as the "Rising Virtue Lodge No. 10" :bubbles: The biggest loss to me is that there was a shoe repair shop in the building. I'll bet they don't start back up. I love the old shoe repair shops. They smell amazing. Of course I haven't been in one in years -- can't really be shocked when they go out of business. Well, we went to the somewhat dreaded half-sib cocktail party; it was in the next town, so not like we had to drive very far. It was lots of fun, we had a good time. I knew we would have a good time -- I also knew I would end up making plans with my half-sis and her family, thus setting myself up for future disappointments. It's all so predictable. We are going to go to my niece's performance in a Gilbert and Sullivan opera. No problem, we want to go. Maybe it will all go swimmingly. Maybe we'll have our plans all made and they will cancel at the last minute. Stay tuned. I'm very pessimistic, even while I act in this naively optimistic way. Obviously I'm schizophrenic. DH is watching football today. So we are wasting another weekend day at home, me on the computer, him in front of the TV, and DD up in her room. I'm the one who knows nothing. Cherry Cow 01-18-2004, 09:10 PM Kiwi, do you know anything about XML parsers? I'm getting fatter... I've had a bad cough for more than a week now and haven't been able to exercise as much as I have to to keep from getting fat. I don't know if I gave the cold to Sug or if she gave it to me. Peaches, yay on getting the lid off! I didn't know you were in a creative writing workshop online. I'm doing a two-year novel program. This week, we're talking about theme and symbolism. Painty, I'm applying to Universities of Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin-Madison, although MU is the one I'll most likely go to, since we likely won't move before June. There aren't many ALA-accredited schools left... people keep talking about a shortage of librarians, but no one wants to do anything about it. I think I also have to try to get an MA in English as well, if I want a job. Probably lit, not creative writing, although I do aspire to be a novelist. Hi Wabby, Lushie, and Baggzz! PainterWoman 01-19-2004, 02:55 AM Cherry-- are you doing the Writer's Digest course? A friend of mine did that one and her novel has been purchased and edited enough times that it's now in galleys. There's even a publicist and the liklihood of radio interviews when it comes out. Librarians tend to be meek, I think.... But the woman my ex ran off with was also a librarian... then she worked for a consulting firm and made BIG bucks working truly with INFORMATION management, (more like I.T. theory, I think).... rather than books. Where are good researchers being trained if not in library schools? Which Mo campus has the library school? SLU? Columbus? There's one close to me in North Texas if you'd like to get out of the snow, mostly. I am really wanting to eat something. Drat.Maybe I'll get in bed and read. Kiwonk 01-19-2004, 04:00 AM Kiwi, do you know anything about XML parsers? Sorry, no, not a thing. I leave the web stuff to my DD. DH stayed up too late tonight for me to make his birthday cake. Oh well, his fault for changing his plans at the last minute. So tomorrow we're going to either Cold Mountain or Paycheck and out to dinner. Maybe I'll bring a candle and stick it in his dessert  I think I'll go look at the reviews for movies. I know Cold Mountain would be better than Paycheck, but I'm not really in the mood for serious and dramatic. Kiwi vBulletin® v3.6.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
