Okay, here's an idea for any of you Ebay buffs....sell a copy of the shows! I went to Dr. Phil's site and he's charging $30 per show. I would love a copy of the shows that I missed but I'm not paying that!
09-16-2003, 07:50 PM
I just watched the show and am as motivated to do whatever it is that Dr. Phil has in mind for these 13 people.
09-16-2003, 09:58 PM
I try to keep positive... I have really enjoyed being a part of these Threads and you all have just been so wonderful - how could I not be ;)
The new job is working well for this diet! I work in a hospital and get my lunch half price....salad I don't have to cut up? I'm game. Probably the only way I'll eat it. I always buy veggies with the best of intentions but....
Only got the second half of both shows . Asked my brother to tape them but he didn't . Really like what I saw so far. Can't wait to see how they do in the house. Didn't expect that. Know what you mean about seeing yourself in the twelve.
Thanks for starting the book thread Angel. I think I'm going to check out Dr Phil's site and see how they are going to handle it. Wonder if we should keep this thread open as well as the one for the book?
Hi Sunny . Saw your posts and seem so upbeat!

I like the people he choose to do the Challenge...
all types, shapes and sizes... just like us!
Looks like it is going to be like a reality type show, doesn't it?
So wonderful to hear that everything is going so well with the new job & diet! :cp: Yeahhh!

Did anyone else tear up when Dr. Phil choose Terri as the 13th challenger? I was thinking of her when they panned the camera in her direction, after they choose the 12th person. She looked so sad, because they talked about her the day before. She was desperate. When he came back on and said it was too close and he wants 13 instead of 12, and told Terri to come on up, you could tell she was in total shock of happiness. I was crying! What a joy for her, and a great thing for Dr. Phil to do. He must of noticed her disappointment too.
Can't wait to see the group in the house. It's like the Real World (when I used to watch it years ago), only better! This people I can relate to. Some of them throw out other people's junk food, and they all turn on each other. Who would be stupid enough to bring junk food into a mansion supplied by Dr. Phil to help you lose weight? How stupid is that? He really jumps on some of them for that!
See ya all later! This is going to be too fun!
09-17-2003, 08:35 AM
I finally watched both shows yesterday. I felt so bad for some of those people! Some of those stories made me tear up.
That woman whose husband made fun of her all the time really ticked me off  Especially when he made the crack about her having to be picked up by the cherry picker when she fell on the construction site! What an insensitive jerk!
I am really glad he picked Terri at the end :)
There are some people who say he is just in this for the money but I really I think he wants to help people. What he was saying on the shows was practical (i.e) finding your suitable weight, working on the reasons your are overweight etc. Most diets don't do that and are a quick (mostly temporary) fix. Hopefully this challenge will help people mentally, emotionally and physically :)
I start reading the book today - looking forward to the discussion in the book club forum! :D

I mean I'm sure he's not looking to lose money on this endeavour but I don't think making money is his only motivation. This is just a public extension of what he's done in his private practice for years.
I also saw the look on his face during the part of the show where he was watching people's tapes. He really wants to help people.
And if he's trying to make money by telling people the truth, isn't that a heck of a lot better than companies who try to make money by selling us a bunch of lies?!?!
09-17-2003, 10:54 AM
I'm just passing through, but wanted to mention, if you don't already know, that Dr. Phil's book is available on CD. His voice as motivation can only be a good thing! Too bad I can't get his show on my sattelite dish out here in the boonies where I am.
Regarding him making money, well he can't do it for free! And as someone said, at least he is promoting something that is truthful and doable.
Have fun and stay OP! :D

Good Morning Gang! :balloons:
And a very Good Morning to Mrs K & Jana! Good to meet you ;)
I must agree that Dr. Phil is not doing this for the money... why begrudge someone their due? If he has put in the time to help all of us out, don't you think it is only fair he is to be paid for it? I know that I would like to be paid for the work I do. It's what he does with his money that matters. I do know that he gives to many charitable events and causes like Oprah does.
So let's walk a mile in his shoes before we say something about the $ he is paid. Be happy for him that he is successful, because of his success --- many are being helped! ;) (I do not write this in a scolding manner, just an informative one ;) ).
Dr. Phil is a man who is living what he preaches... therefore he has success in his life. We can do it too...
"Be successful!" :) :D ;)
Have a Beautiful Day Ladies!

Hi Deb ~
Don't blame you there... it is costly to get taped shows. Maybe you could see if someone is willing to loan you theirs? Ask around at work or a neighbor friend... I am sure there has to be someone passing their tapes around ;)
And E-bay is a great idea!
09-17-2003, 11:25 AM
morning gang :)
I, too, was just thrilled when Dr. Phil chose Terri in the end. You could tell that the audience was even happy..... such applause! I think it is going to be very interesting to watch these people over the next 10 months. I don't envy them......... they have a very tough job ahead of them. We all have a tough road to walk, but most of us are doing it privately. Kudos to these 13 people, for their courage!!!!!
To jump in on the money discussion.... here's my 2 cents, for what it's worth. I agree that you can't begrudge a person for making a living. Just the other night at work, I had this month's issue of O magazine with me, and I made a comment about how fabulous Oprah looks these days. A co-worker remarked, "yeah, I could look like that, too, if I had a whole staff working for me and unlimited amounts of money." Sorry, but I just found that to be a very b!tchy comment!!! Sure, Oprah has a personal trainer and a personal chef, etc..... but, she has worked pretty darn hard for these things! I don't have to point out to everyone where she came from. I feel the same way about Dr. Phil. If you've read "Self Matters" you know a little of how he got to where he is. Should we put him down for working hard to get where he is? Sure, he's gonna make money off of this, but he is also going to help thousands of people. To anyone who holds that against him, I say, sour grapes!
Well, I shall step off the soapbox and leave it for the next person......... :D
09-17-2003, 11:39 AM
Here! Here! JEN!
I don't believe that we should envy anyone for what they have in their lives (and that's all that is when neg. comment's are made)... be happy for them, I am sure they have worked hard for it. But even if they haven't worked for it... things always work out "in the end" ;)
My parents have money now that they are both retired (my mom an RN and my dad Marine Officer) and I hear talk all the time and they worked hard and suffered much... *envy* sheer envy. That's all it is. Why can't people just be happy for others today. Work hard and you WILL be rewarded for it - one way, or another.
:soap:--- Okay, I'm getting down... NEXT!
09-17-2003, 02:57 PM
I really was only passing through, and had no intension of butting in on your group, but I have a question -
I found out I CAN get Dr. Phil's show, with rabbit ears, and when I went to the TV station's program listing, it has todays show as
"Competitive parents", or something like that! I thought this would be about the dieters??? When do we see a new episode of THAT show again? Obviously I missed 2 very important shows, but what about the rest of them? I mean, now that they have picked the group, what's next.
Also, I DO think $30 is way too much for a tape of the show! Yes, he is entitled to make money, (as I said, he can't do it for free) but holy cow! $30??? Per tape???? That is way to steep for most of us......
09-17-2003, 03:30 PM
Yes, the focus this season is on Wt Loss, but I think he is doing it every Monday from here on in... He did two shows to begin the New season for choosing the people to be on the TV program for the Wt. Loss, but now it will be on other topics on the other days.
If I hear something different, I will let yu know, okay.
09-17-2003, 03:38 PM
Jana... Here is the website for Dr. Phil... http://www.drphil.com/
Maybe you can get some information you need there :)
09-17-2003, 08:10 PM
My understanding was that he was doing this every Monday for the next ten months.....I had a good day....I want to buy his book...haven't done that yet.....I did take the readiness test on his website and scored an 18....I guess I am ready....Good health to all!
09-17-2003, 09:41 PM
Sorry, didn't mean to start a controversy over the whole $30 a tape deal. I don't begrudge Dr. Phil making money or anything....just that I don't like the idea of payine $30 for what I could have copied for free.
I agree with the 13th guest being asked....kept seeing her in the audience, her face, and thought how desperate she looks. Guess that's like a lot of us. The show will be on monday for those of you who aren't sure.....I DEFINATELY WILL HAVE A TAPE IN!
He's giving it 10 months and I thought...that's 80 lbs, Deb, if you lose just 2 a week. I can do that!
Hope everyone is having a great week. I'm worried about the hurricane that's coming in....wonder how much calories you burn bailing water?

That's okay Deb... I think the $30.00 tapes made for an interesting run of conversation :D
I THINK I WAS GOING MORE WITH WHAT MAUV SAID... It wasn't so much the cost of the tapes but unspoken thoughts about $ --- money is a very sensitive topic, you know. You were just the "in" for the conversation on others minds (my mind too)... but I actually found it neat to know what people thought. Didn't you? Kinda exciting :^:
You are right! $30.00 is allot of $ to pay! I know I wouldn't pay it, but then again... I tape the shows ;)
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE!
09-18-2003, 09:27 AM
Good Morning Ladies! Sorry I havent been around for a few days!!! Busy! Busy! Busy!
As for $30 A tape... it is high but if you look at the cost that most talk shows charge for the tapes it is about the same.... I think they do this to really discourage people from buying copies of the show.... they know that you could record it and I think it is more of a headache to them to do this and therefore they offer it but dont really expect people to take them up on this.....
As for Dr Phil making money... he is and he deserves it... I mean I didnt go to years and years of college for his degree.... I didnt have a private practice for 30 years where I dealt with this.... we are paying for his expertise.... and he earned it.... I mean I am about to bust my rear studying to get my license in real estate... should I then sell someones house for free.... if I learn all the legal issues and fair housing acts and the marketing, etc. of selling a house and I sell your house then I should earn something for my time and commitment.... so should he....
I also read that alot (if not all) of the profits from all the weight loss stuff he is doing is going to fight childhood obesity.... so he is giving back.......
More power to him!
Anyway, I am off to work! Hope all is well!
09-18-2003, 10:20 AM
http://www.graphicgarden.com/diverse7/graphics/linkware/misc/angel1/angcl1n.gifGood Morning Angel! Good to see you! So you are studying hard are ya --- Good for you!!! :cp: I wish you well getting that license in real estate!! Heard that it really pays off when you finally get it as long as you do your homework on the homes and area you are selling in.
On Dr. Phil ~ So good to hear you agree... I hear that also! That he was supporting Children in weight loss. Last year... he had a mom & daughter on and you could see the wheels turning in his eyes when that little one touched his heart!! He has such a love for children - a big teddy bear!
Have a great day!!
Much Success in your day...
and for us all! ;)

Just wanted to let you all know...
I am working through the books audits and quizzes in my journal here. If you click on the "web" button below you can get to my journal. Just in case anyone is interested.
09-18-2003, 12:40 PM
Thank you so much for the info! I, too, will be taping the Monday shows. :D
09-18-2003, 12:54 PM
I agree that $30.00 for a tape is pricey but they have to transfer from the film they use for television to VHS format and it is expensive to do that. My DH's band was on a local television station and asked if they could have a tape of the broadcast. They told him it would cost $50.00 :yikes: and that was for a 30 minute performance! Fortunately I had videotaped it for him so we had a copy without shelling out the big bucks for it :)
When I was talking about Dr. Phil and money I was speaking about his detractors who are saying he is just jumping on the weight loss bandwagon - a lot of them say he is just cashing in. Even if you don't buy his book but watch the shows I think it will help people. Also it will bring awareness to North America that this has become an epidemic, awareness of our own and our children's health and also of how overweight people in our society are treated. If it helps make people healthier and/or more sensitive to how they treat other people in general then I say :bravo:
My heart totally broke for some of the people on his past shows who told stories of how rudely they were treated, made fun of or simply ignored because of their weight. No one should be treated like that regardless of age, race, religion, sex or size and no one has the right to treat people like that!
Stepping off my podium now... :soap: Sorry but that is just how I feel :)

MAUV ~ I just couldn't agree with you more! Maybe people watching Dr. Phil (that don't have a weight problems or issues) will become more caring toward others who do (!) after seeing his shows! It's terrible to be judged - especially when people don't take the time to get to know one another first.
Have a good day!
09-18-2003, 03:13 PM
I have been reading Dr. Phil's new book for several days now. I'm trying to take it slow and really hear what the book is saying.
I've been impressed so far. Maybe it is stuff I've been hearing for years, but at this particular time in my life maybe I'm open too it.
I've often wondered why I eat the way I do. Why food is so darn important to me, well this book certainly does deal with that. I really like the four question that he poses about the emotions that evoke some of my eating binges.
1. Is it true?
2. Does it serve my best interest?
3. Does it advance or protect my health?
4. Does it help met my weight-management goal?
The goal thing is another thing that has really caught my attention. I have about 150 lbs to get rid of and that always seems so insurmountable to me. I always set my self up for failure because it was just so much and didn't figure that I would ever be able to do. But the goal setting this is something that makes it seem more attainable. I don't figure this will be a passing fad for me, because at this point in my life it is do or die.
Can't just sit on the side-lines and wait till I'm dead! LOL
09-18-2003, 06:22 PM
Hey Gang...I just bought the book this morning and can't wait to get started. I am just hoping that somehow I will be able to get motivated to change my habits....It would be awful to fall off the bandwagon, or miss out on this opportunity. I just keep telling myself that if I don't do this now, along with those 13 people, that when I sit down to watch that success show 10 months from now, that I will feel so hopeless if I too, am not successful;....so that is spurring me on right now.
09-18-2003, 07:18 PM
Well, glad I got a conversation jumping about something! Been busy with a new job so I haven't read as much of the book as I'd like. I have been sticking to my diet better though....better than I have in a long time. Pretty happy about that.
One thing that struck me, from the half of show I did get , was the woman who said she was afraid to give up her excuse. That being overweight was a reason for failure and that if she lost all the weight she'd have no excuse. It would be all on her. "People don't like me because I'm fat" is much easier to deal with than "People don't like me". Not really sure I'm making sense...but I know that my weight serves as a convenient scapegoat for many things. Guess I need to work on defining what purpose it serves in order to successfully lose it.
Enough of my rambling! Hope everyone gets through the hurricane okay :)
09-19-2003, 10:13 AM
I am getting so excited about starting this on Monday.... I havent finished the reading assignment for this Monday yet because I have been reading all the real estate laws.... FUN Fun!
I think I will post a thread on the reading board where all of us that are going to do the book club can introduce ourselves....
It sounds like we are going to have a great crowd!
09-19-2003, 10:33 AM
Angel do you work in a law office? Or are you studinying to become a realtor?
Just curious as I work in a law office. I do civil litigation, family law and estates and a little bit of criminal law.
09-19-2003, 11:01 AM
I am working on getting my real estate license.... actually start calsses in October but have already received my books and am trying to read through them before the class starts since the class is an excelerated class. I figure it will be easier for me if I have already read through this material once....
More power to you being able to work with the law. I am sure itis challenging and I dont think it would be something that I could do.
09-19-2003, 11:54 AM
Angel - Thanks for the "getting to know you" thread in the book club forum. Great questions and I'm really looking forward to getting to know all of the Dr. Phil buddies better.

Hi everyone! I came here after going to the Dr. Phil website. Reason being I believe he charges for membership...I wasn't so sure. I think you can read the message boards there but you can't write and do the journals if you're not a member. I don't know...can anyone enlighten me? This kind of falls into the question and discussion of Dr. Phil being in it for the money. I already got the book (2 days ago) and am currently a third through it. It's kind of hard to think that he's not in it for the money if you have to buy the book and pay for support on his website. (Everybody's a business now!) But he does know his stuff and has worked hard. That's just my opinion. I want some support as I go through the book, so I hope you don't mind me coming here. I figure we can do our work here with each other as we read the book and watch the show. I took the readiness quiz and I am ready! Thanks for letting me vent. I too was so glad he chose Terri!

You do have to be a registered member to post your journal and on the boards at Dr. Phil's site - BUT registration is FREE. You do not pay to be a member there.
I post more here because I like the format and the layout better and it seems to be a smaller group - which for me is better because we can get to know one another more.
But Dr. Phil's website is not a pay to register site. You do have to be a registered member to post - but that is just a matter of providing some information and creating a user name.
Hope this helps.

Your Welcome Mrs K.... I am looking forward to this....
Terri- Welcome! We would love to have you here....
We are starting a Book Club on this book starting Monday September 22..... please join us... it is under the new Book Club Forum....check it out.
As for the support boards on Dr Phil... I dont know if you have to pay or not... will look into it.... I do know that most of the profits from all of this is supposed to be going towards fighting chidlhood obesity.....
Come join us Terri!
OK just went to Dr Phil..... there is no charge to sign up there..... they just need you to register like you had to register here.... so that you have your own name and password and stuff.....

Hi there!! I am taking the Dr. Phil challenge but am having a lot of trouble using his boards (they're just too big - it's hard to find what you're looking for). I was so glad to find a group here! I've got about 100 lbs to lose, but I actually think I'm ready to do it this time. I'm about 90 pages into his book, and while a lot of it seems very do-able to me, I have to admit the 'find someone you have to answer to' part scares me. I just don't have someone nearby who's that close to me...but hey, if I've got a board to chat on, then I know there will be people who understand and we can keep tabs on each other. It's great to see such a fabulous bunch of people here - I hope to get to know you all very soon!
Oh yeah - I too was crying my eyes out when he picked Terri :)
09-19-2003, 04:14 PM
Hello ANGEL... Thanks again for all you have done to make everything possible!!! Keep up the great work.
Also... I hope that all is going well with you and your real estate studies. So, you actually begin classes in Oct. ~ you will be great at it!
Hello's and warm WELCOME'S to all the new faces (so to speak)... great to have you join us! Angel has done such a great job and so has Young Grasshopper - keeping us on track!
I am only half way through what we must have read by Monday - sure hope I get it done by then! Just have so many other things on my plate these days. But really want to put "me" first for once and hop on the wagon to success!
Have a great day & evening ladies ;)
