Start off slow, focus on one item to change. Eating smaller portions, adding vegetables, lean meat, fruit and whole grains, drinking more water each day.
What has helped me so far is to track my calories...nothing fancy I created an excel spreadsheet to track my calories. This helps me stay on track and not have a snack and forget how many calories I've eaten. Some days when I don't have time to use the spreadsheet, I use a post-it-note or a piece of scratch paper at my desk at work.
Also, I plan what I am eating one day in advance, that way there are no excuses to get fast food or cookies or whatever will keep me from losing weight.
