Question The Best Way To Keep Bananas Fresh??

I have one banana every morning for breakfast and if I happen to get hungary later in the day I'll have a second one. The problem is I buy them in 2 bundles and usually by the third day they're already totally brown and mushy. I've tried leaving them on the shelf. Putting them in a fruit bag from the store into the fridge. Putting them in the fridge w/out the bag and putting them in the crisper drawer with and without the bag. None of those have changed how long the bananas stay fresh. Any suggestions?

wrap the stem tightly with tin foil, it will help slow down the ripening process

Buy fewer bananas at one time? They're so cheap that I'm not sure why you would need to buy them in bulk, unless you can't get to the store often.

I've tried all the "tricks" and none of them seem to work very well.

Yep, I buy one bundle every few weeks, but I don't eat them and have no idea if my family will. They go some weeks eating them everyday, and other times they really don't touch them. So, I freeze the extra bananas by slicing them and using the frozen bananas to make smoothies or banana ice cream.

^^^ Great suggestion. Banana ice cream is yummy! I freeze mine to use in fruit and veggie smoothies if I think they will go bad before I get to them.

I buy the greenest bananas that I can find and I do the same as others, I freeze them and use them in smoothies when they start to go bad.

I buy the greenest ones I can find too. But I also hang my bananas (they tend to bruise quicker if you lay them down or put them in the fridge).

I have a banana hanger.

My bananas keep a week at least this way.

I buy different stages of ripeness for my husband. So i go from speckled (eat today) to yellow/no specks (eat in the next day or two) to green (eat by the end of the week). If he doesn't eat them all, like others, i freeze them for banana ice cream or smoothies.

I try to only get groceries every other week. The less time I'm in a grocery store the less time for temptation of buying things I shouldn't be eating. I'll have to try the tin foil idea. I've never heard of that before. I always grab the bananas with the most green I can, but everytime I get them there's always only a little bit of green left on them. I've never made smoothies before. I'll have to find some recipes. Sounds yummy!

Catmom, Thank you for the tinfoil suggestion. I was able to keep them for quite a few more days than usual! The outside browns, but the inside takes longer to brown now.
