Default sugar and carb sensitive

Hi I had rny surg 5 yrs ago and am maintaining my loss. after my surg I learned right away to avoid sugar and only small amts of carbs. If I didn't id best stay home as I spent a lot of time in the ladys room. Now it seems that no matter whatI eat I get that reaction. If im going out and about I don't eat befor or during. Had to many close calls if you catch my drift.sometimes one bite or a sip of tea or coffee will set off the reaction. Its life constricting, I miss the social aspects of going to lunch with girlfriends or out to dinner with my hubby. My question has any one else had this problem? and how do you deal with it? Other than that I feel well for my age and my Dr says I'm healthy . 65 It annoying to have to scope out where all the bathrooms are befor I go anywhere. This has been an unpleasant side affect, so wondered if you had any helpful sugestions? thanks rosey

So, if I understand you, eating sugar or "carbs," gives you immediate diarrhea? By carbs, I'm going to assume you mean simple carbs like crackers or chips and not vegetables. Is that correct?

Many RNY patients suffer some ill effects from simple carbs and sugars. For some, it results in reactive glycemia, while others suffer dumping symptoms. If either case, close monitoring of the diet is necessary to avoid the foods that trigger the symptoms. Do you journal your food choices? Do you know which foods cause the most reactions? In either case, these episodes are avoidable in most cases by eating protein and vegetables first and avoiding simple carbs. It shouldn't be a life sentence of being home bound.

If you think this is more than RH or dumping, I'd speak to another specialist. Maybe your gut flora is off kilter and you need a probiotic or other product to help. Good luck!

I had a similar experience to yours of being practically housebound. My doctor ignored my compalints. I continued to press, was tested and had a bacterial infection related to the bypassed intestines from the surgery. Antibiotics helped quite a bit. Carbs make it worse because the sugar feeds the infection. Do not suffer silently. If one doctor does not listen to you, try another. Let us know how you are doing.

rosey - please go see a doc. you might have to get scoped. Complications can set in ANY TIME and we have to take care of them. I'm being scoped next week because of the past couple of years of vomiting that all my other docs decided to ignore because i was losing weight.

we should NOT have problems eating things like yogurt, cottage cheese, meat, eggs, veggies unless we don't chew them well enough. Since it's gotten to the point that it's interfered with your life [as has mine], ya gotta go get checked out.
